FREDERICK KNOTT

Frederick Knott was born in Hankow, China, to Eng-

lish missionaries. He was educated at Oundle School

from 1929 to 1934 and later gained a law degree from

Cambridge University. He served in the British Army

from 1939 to 1946, rising to the rank of Major, and

eventually moved to the United States.

Although his most successful play, Dial M for Murder, was a

hit on the stage, it was originally a television production. The clever,

complicated play was turned down by seven London producers before

being accepted as a television drama by the British Broadcasting Cor-

poration. As a theatre piece, it premiered at the Westminster Theatre

in Victoria, London, in June 1952. This production was followed in

October by a successful run in New York City at the Plymouth Thea-

ter, 552 performances. Knott also wrote the screenplay for the 1954

Hollywood movie which Hitchcock filmed for Warner Brothers in 3D.

In 1960, Knott wrote the stage thriller Write Me a Murder,

which was produced at the Belasco Theatre in New York in October

1961.

Knott's stage play Wait Until Dark was produced on Broad-

way, in 1966, at the Ethel Barrymore Theatre. The Director was Ar-

thur Penn and the play starred Lee Remick who won a Tony Award

nomination for her performance. Later the same year, Honor Black-

man played the lead in London's West End at the Strand Theatre. The

film version, also titled Wait Until Dark that was released in 1967,

had Audrey Hepburn in the lead role.

Frederick Knott died in New York City in 2002.

Director’s Notes

This past summer, we here at Clear Creek Community Theatre did Twelfth

Night, and as the Bard says in that play; “…some have greatness thrust upon

them”. Wait Until Dark was thrust upon me. I had heard of the show but had

never seen it. Late last spring I was asked to direct it for our 49th season. I, of

course said yes, and then I saw the play at Upstage Theatre in June and I became

quite intimidated by the prospect-all those props!! Also this year I had the pleas-

ure of being in a production of Lend Me A Tenor with, among others, Priscilla

Ingram and Edmund Pantuliano. I have acted in four plays with Steve Quimby

in the past, was already good friends with Nick Churchill and had met and be-

came friends with Michael Carver during our recent production of A Flea In Her

Ear. How lucky I was to have all of them come audition for me in the first show

I got to direct that wasn’t a Christmas show. They are all top-notch actors and I

am so grateful to them. I also had Hannah Wolken who was in both of the

Christmas shows I had done and Elizabeth Richardson who had been in our

Summer Youth Apprentice production of Robin Hood and whose grandparents

helped found Baytown Little Theatre. I knew with that cast I couldn’t lose, no

matter how many props I needed!! I want to give a special shout out to my

friend Chris Marullo with Franca’s Italian Restaurant Dinner Theatre. Chris

built most of my set almost single-handedly. Also special kudos to Brazos

Vasquez and Tristan Steierhoff who are Steve Quimby’s grandsons for their help

and dedication to getting this show up and running. And a special note to my

dear friend Terri Taylor Page, at no time did Mr. Roat have to leave Susy on the

set by herself to “go to the bathroom”!
