University 26 - Hamilton Marist 24

University overcame an 11 point halftime deficit to beat

Hamilton Marist in a thrilling match to claim the Nicol Mackie

Cup and keep their unbeaten start to the season alive.

With a late try Marist had the opportunity to come away with a

draw at the University grounds, but the conversion sailed wide

and the students hung on to secure a four tries to two bonus

point win.

The first half hour of the match was littered with penalties and

both teams struggled to create opportunities.

University looked more enterprising with ball in hand but Marist

played sensible rugby and soon founds themselves up 9-0

thanks to three penalty goals from fullback Wharenui Hawera.

With eight minutes to play in the first half University produced

the opening try of the match when wing Brogan Connor found

some space and timed a wonderful offload to replacement back

Jonnie Te Ruki who crossed in the right hand corner.

Marist had the final say of the half when Hawera took the ball

to the line and gave a great ball in the tackle of two defenders to

flanker Zane Kapeli who scored handy to the posts.

Hawera added the extras and the whistle was blown for

halftime with Marist in front 16-5.

Marist started the second half strongly and went hard on

attack, but a loose ball at the back of a ruck was pounced on by

University lock Jacob Skeen who hacked the ball downfield 50

metres before regathering and running the final 30 metres for a

spectacular breakout try.

Hawera added his fourth penalty but just minutes later

University conjured up another piece of long range magic. A big

clearing kick from first five Jason Robertson was kept in play

and toed ahead by Uni and a strong chase was led by centre

Glen Robertson who scored the try.

Jason Robertson's conversion tied the game up at 19-19.

Momentum was now all with Uni and with 20 minutes

remaining they were rewarded for more attacking endeavour

when loose forward Whetu Douglas crossed for a well worked

try to secure the bonus point.

Robertson again added the extras for a seven point lead.

Marist threw plenty at their opposition in the last quarter and

tested the home side on several occasions but a lack of

execution let them down as the final passes just weren't sticking.

Finally, with just two minutes left on the clock, a well-controlled

lineout drive was executed to perfection and Marist rumbled over

the line with replacement flanker Luke Karalus scoring their

second try of the day.

Hawera had the conversion attempt 10 metres in from touch to

tie the game but he pushed it wide.

University was able to hang on after the kick off until the

fulltime whistle to seal their sixth straight win and hand Marist

their second loss of the year.

Hamilton Old Boys 59 - Te Rapa 0

Hamilton Old Boys were too good for Te Rapa in the Thursday

night game at Willoughby Park but it was a much improved

performance in many respects from the visitors.

After conceding more than 90 points in their last two matches

Te Rapa found themselves already down 40-0 at the break, but

did well to keep the top four Old Boys side to just 19 points in

the second half.

Old Boys scored nine tries in total with two each for loose

forward Levi Elliott and centre Anthony Coffey.

Fraser Tech 35 - Melville 26

Fraser Tech continued their recent good run with a bonus point

win over Melville at Collins Road.

Tech scored five tries with halfback Troy Lobendahn getting

two, and one each for Ryohei Yamanaka, Brodie McCurran and

Shaquille Dempsey.

Melville certainly played their part in the match and remained

close throughout, scoring four tries to Atu Masirewa (2), Seth

Rose and Mike Martin to take away a bonus point.

Otorohanga 24 - Morrinsville Sports 0

Otorohanga took a while to get going at Campbell Park versus

Morrinsville Sports but in the end came away with another bonus

point win.

Prop Ted Tauroa scored two first half tries with fullback Te

Amo Wilbore and replacement Jeremy Iti dotting down in the

second spell to secure the bonus point.

The win gives Otorohanga a perfect six wins from six to start

the season and leaves them and University as the only two

unbeaten teams.

Hautapu 16 - Te Awamutu Sports 10

The two Waipa clubs, who find themselves languishing in the

bottom half of the table, had a hard fought match at Memorial

Park in Cambridge.

It was Hautapu who came out on top to secure their first win of

the season, with their points coming from tries to hooker Anton

Milne and fullback Chris Bronswijk plus two penalties from first

five Kelvin Smith.

Te Awamutu loose forward Fetu Sasalu scored both of the

visitor’s tries, one in each half, but Hautapu’s second half

penalty goals proved to be the difference.

University and Otorohanga are still the only unbeaten teams after Round 6 wins, while there was also Easter Weekend victories for Hamilton Old Boys, Fraser Tech and Hautapu.
