Hamilton Old Boys 42 – Melville 28

Hamilton Old Boys overcame a halftime deficit at Collins Road

to take a bonus point victory over Melville.

The home side took it to their more fancied opponent early on,

taking a 16-13 lead into halftime, but Old Boys pulled away in

the second half with several long range tries.

Melville started strongly and with good intensity, and after

quarter of an hour they had a 9-0 lead thanks to three penalties

from first five Maurice Stone.

The first try of the match then came on Old Boys’ first foray into

Melville territory - wing Sione Tupa scoring in the right hand

corner.

That gave Old Boys the boost they needed and they worked

their way into the match well with first five Anthony Coffey

kicking a penalty to narrow Melville’s lead to one.

After a period of messy play the game then sparked into life in

the last moments of the half.

Firstly, out of nowhere, Old Boys spun the ball wide and

outflanked the Melville defence for wing Jackson Gillett to score

and Old Boys hit the front.

Their lead was brief however as right on halftime Melville

marched back into Old Boys territory and Number 8 Jacob Ale

burst his way over the line.

Stone’s conversion from wide out gave Melville a 16-13 lead at

the break.

Old Boys played with more control early in the second half and

two more penalties from Coffey soon had them back in front.

Tupa then intercepted a loose Melville pass from a quick throw

in and ran 50 metres to score his second and suddenly the

visitor’s lead was out to 10 points.

Coffey’s fourth penalty was quickly followed by a bonus point

try to second five Jordan Cameron, set up by halfback Kylem

O’Donnell, and with 20 minutes left Old Boys were cruising to

victory.

Old Boys fifth try was a well worked breakout effort, finished off

by replacement Aleki Kisina.

Melville, to their credit, kept fighting and were rewarded with

two late tries to halfback Hayato Nishibashi and replacement

Josh Iosefa-Scott.

But the result was never in doubt after Old Boys’ scoring burst

early in the second spell, and Coffey added his fifth penalty of

the day on fulltime to complete the scoring.

Otorohanga 23 – Hamilton Marist 19

Otorohanga recorded their seventh straight win with a hard

fought victory over Hamilton Marist at Island Reserve in a

rematch of the 2013 premier final.

Loose forward Josh Tyrell scored Marist’s opening try before

tries to Otorohanga lock Josh Ferguson and prop Ted Tauroa

saw the home side take an 18-5 lead into the break.

Two tries from prop Loni Uhila saw Marist hit the front but

Otorohanga centre Dylan Collier scored what turned out to be

the decisive try and the home side ended on top after an

entertaining second half.

Fraser Tech 57 – University 22

Fraser Tech produced an inspired performance to thump the

previously unbeaten University side at the Waikato University

grounds and push themselves into the top four.

Tech took a big lead early on and from there the match was

never in doubt, running in eight tries with halfback Troy

Lobendahn getting a double and second five Ryohei Yamanaka

kicking 17 points.

After conceding a 31-5 lead at halftime, University benefited as

the game opened up and managed to come away with a four try

bonus point with two to centre Glen Robertson.

Te Awamutu Sports 35 - Morrinsville Sports 17

Te Awamutu put in a much improved performance to get a

bonus point win over Morrinsville at Albert Park.

Flanker Fetu Sasalu, first five Waylon Tangohau, wing Nanai

Naturaga, lock Chad Lawrence and centre Tane Mita scored the

home side’s five tries in match they controlled from the outset.

Wing Semisi Masirewa, first five Josh O’Flaherty and halfback

Lester Pollard scored Morrinsville’s three tries but the loss

leaves them back in ninth spot.

Hautapu 27 - Te Rapa 14

Hautapu managed a bonus point win over Te Rapa at St

Andrews Park but it wasn’t all plain sailing with Te Rapa putting

in a much improved effort.

Centre Harrison Lafituanai scored two brilliant tries for Te Rapa

which more than doubled their total points tally from their first six

games.

Hautapu scored three tries in the first half for a 19-7 lead and

got their fourth in the second half to ensure their bonus point.

Midfield backs Thomas Orr and Jason Thomasen, prop Longo

Takataka and first five Kelvin Smith were the scorers.

Otorohanga are now the only unbeaten team after their win over Hamilton Marist and University’s loss to Fraser Tech last weekend. Other teams with Round 7 wins were Hamilton Old Boys, Te Awamutu Sports and Hautapu.
