Septic tanks and multi-stage septic systems are delicately balanced environments. It does not take much to upset them. Common practice is to ignore the septic system until problems occur. Good and best economical practice is to always keep your septic system well maintained.

A malfunctioning septic system can become a health hazard. When a system is not maintained or operated as a delicately balanced environment, problems occur. These problems include nasty odours, leach line blockages, untreated liquid rising to the surface, toilets gurgling and taking time to empty. A summary of the Waikato District Council’s 2012-2022 draft Long Term Plan is being posted to all ratepayers.

A summary of the plan, containing submission forms, will be posted to all ratepayers and will also be available along with the full document at the council’s offices, libraries and service centres. Submission forms are also available online at www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz

In a press release from the Waikato District Council, chief executive Gavin Ion said many people rely on the summary for all the information.

“We have included the main consultation issues in the summary.”

The plan, which contains the council’s strategic direction and proposed budgets for the next ten years, also includes details about proposed rates levels and projects.

Some of the major issues put forward for consultation include financial strategy, rates, waste management and minimisation plan, the discontinuation of road seal extensions, dog registration fees, water quality, wastewater quality, council borrowing through the Local Government Funding Agency, council review on Hamilton Airport and the Strada corporation board, and the feasibility of a train service between Auckland and Tuakau.

Several open days will be held throughout the district, providing the public with an opportunity to ask questions before making submissions.

“While this is a council plan, it’s really about the community and what they want for their district,” said Mr Ion.

“The council relies on public feedback through the submission process, to help give a picture of what the community thinks of what’s proposed as the decisions are made for the final plan.”

Consultation opened on April 5 and closes at 4pm on May 9.

Hearings are also planned for residents to speak to councillors about their submissions.

The final plan will be adopted on June 26.

Challenging season for crop growth

Federated Farmers Waikato grain and seed chairperson John Hodge said yields for both maize grain and maize silage are likely to be down between 10 and 15 percent on average around the region this harvest.

“There has been a huge amount of rain since spring with rainfall for our farm at 155ml in October, November 57ml and December 222ml, with a yearly total of 1859ml,” said Mr Hodge.

“Even in January we had 148ml and some places had more than us.”

Mr Hodge said crops planted at the end of September were slow to germinate but appear to have grown well once established.

Although soil moisture levels have recently returned to normal, some areas have been harder hit than others by ponding.

Federated Farmers Waikato provincial president James Houghton had 8ha maize planted on his farm but winds during the March storm flattened 6ha of it.

“We had to harvest a little earlier to

salvage it,” he said.

Crops on lighter soils appear to have benefited from the rainfall and are performing well with yields expected to be up in those areas.

Maize is generally being harvested around three weeks later than usual.

Although the grass situation in the Waikato is looking good heading towards winter, earlier persistent rain presented a challenge for hay-making.

“We haven’t had a good window for hay,” said Mr Houghton.

There are no fences and only sheds to protect them from predators and the weather at night.

“They never stray more than 100 — 120 metres away from base anyway,” Trevor says.

He believes the predatory hawk is the hens’ biggest threat, but in saying that, he has only seen about three hens attacked and killed in three years. “When hawks are around, the hens tend to head back to the shed for protection.”

He currently has around 700 laying hens. Trevor says hens’ laying maturity is triggered by their body weight — normally they are expected to start laying at about 18 weeks old.

Free range poultry farming is different to the commercial and sometimes controversial battery hen method as free range hens have the freedom to roam on the land rather than being confined to cages and this concept appeals to Trevor.

Although it may not be possible to

farm the volume that battery farming would allow, Trevor finds there are still good returns from free range poultry.

Although feed prices do need to be watched as these can become high if not monitored correctly he says.

Most of Eggcellent Eggs’ supply goes to catering businesses and cafes in Hamilton. He also supplies hen eggs and more recently Japanese quail eggs to the Hamilton Farmers Market on Sundays.

“It’s a pretty ‘cruisey’ job after the hard graft of cattle and dairy farming, and with a nice little income,” Trevor says.

The only time it gets a bit full-on is when he is sorting out produce for the market.

“I like animals and birds — chooks in particular and as well as the 700 Brown Shavers, we (he and partner Carolyn Littin who originates from Kaiwaka, also in Northland) keep three other varieties of hens — Light Sussex,

F ree range poultry farmer, Trevor Turvey, considers his farm to be a serious business and not a lifestyle block hobby.

The former Titoki dairy farmer, who 10 years ago used to run 2000 free range hens on his Northland dairy unit, now runs the poultry, along with some beef stock on a 10 hectare block he bought near Ngaruawahia.

Born and raised in the greater Wellington area, Trevor spent most of his working life sharemilking

around the Waikato before he ventured north to purchase his own farm.

There are Ministry of Agriculture and Fisheries regulations that cover poultry farming and the New Zealand Food Safety standards also have a strict risk management programme which farmers have to adhere to.

This programme involves an annual visit by the organisation to check up on how the farm is running. The visit includes checking items such as the temperature of the chiller the eggs are kept in meets the regulation 15 degrees Celsius.

“When you have in excess of 100 hens, the programme needs to be in place, with paperwork comprising 67 pages of questions, and boxes having to be ticked,” Trevor says.

In the future he is hoping to increase his hen stock to around 1000, any more than that, Trevor would need staff, whereas with the restricted numbers he is able to handle the farm himself.

His aim was to provide quality products that were affordable to the majority of New Zealanders, and today the same philosophy remains.

The smoking method is not a simple matter of ‘pressing a button’ as in an electronic smokehouse, it’s more of a craft. The salamis are first cured and then hung over a wood fire until they reach Bill’s measure of perfection.

The length of time the goods are smoked depends largely on the amount of moisture in the atmosphere and the dryness of the wood. New Zealand hardwoods such as manuka are used for the smoking.

Bill’s wife Bridget, who handles the administration side of the business, says mastering the skill of smoking has resulted in a product rich in colour, flavour and unique textures.

“These recipes and smoking methods have remained unchanged since Bill began production in 1992,” she said.

For the first three years Basecamp Salamis operated from Auckland before moving to a bush block outside of Katikati in 1995. Katikati being more central made the show circuits more accessible.

Nowadays Basecamp continues to be run by Bill with the help of two full-time employees and occasional part timers.

Up to 1,000 salamis a week are made at the premises. The venison used comes from wild deer sourced from all over the North Island.

A ‘Hunters’ division has been added as part of Basecamp’s services.

Hunters are able to send their own venison and game meats, frozen down and packed in to chilly bins, from all over the country to Basecamp where the meat is manufactured into their choice of salamis and small goods such as sausages, patties and bier sticks. Even duck breasts can be made into salami with a ‘special bird mix’ of spices.

All of Basecamp’s venison salamis are hand-made, gluten free with no added fillers, and compared to other salamis, low in fat and cholesterol (venison has a quarter to a fifth of the saturated fat of prime beef). They are sold per item, with each salami weighing approximately one kilogram before it goes into the smoke-house.

Each of Basecamp’s three smokehouses can smoke around 250 salamis at one time. The salamis and smoked salami sausage come in four flavours. Basecamp also sells two flavours of bier sticks, hot-smoked or cold smoked venison slices, and wild venison cuts such as steaks and schnitzel.

All products can be ordered on line and are couriered to homes or work addresses across the country.

other markets in the Waikato, Auckland, Bay of Plenty, Wellington, and some South Island locations as well as the larger show events.

This year they will be in the gourmet food section of the Easter Show.

A source of interest to visitors to Basecamp is the trophy stags and hinds grazing in the paddocks that surround Basecamp.

As the season’s change the stags grow out their antlers in preparation for the breeding season known as ’the Roar’ in March/April.

Later on in the year the stags cast their antlers and the velvet begins to grow again. The antlers will continue to grow larger each year until the stag reaches the prime of his life.

F ive years ago Martin, a health service chief executive, and Maureen, a laboratory manager,

realised breeding and training the quality of sport horses they wanted would require full-time commitment — and a new farm.

to get horses out competing or sold on to new competitive homes.

Originally O.L Pintos (a pinto horse has a coat color consisting of large patches of white and any other colour) used New Zealand bred horses and ran their own stallion Amigo O.L a 17hh black and white pinto.

“We always intended to breed for colour and performance, but initially our goal was to breed a band of quality coloured brood mares,” said Martin.

Plans changed six years ago when the couple purchased the coloured mare Dunstan Mumu from top New Zealander rider Katie McVean for Maureen’s 40th birthday.

‘Mumu’ was renowned for her jumping ability and with her purchase the stud’s breeding plans moved towards imported coloured warmblood semen.

Coloured warmbloods were already featuring strongly in European competitions and with the popularity of coloured horses growing in New Zealand this was the direction the stud wanted to take.

‘Mumu’ has been utilised both for natural breedings via frozen semen and also in an embryo transfer programme to increase the genetic gains available.

The stud continues to concentrate on improving the quality of the horses they breed, culling stringently to meet their own criteria.

They now stand three coloured, generically tested stallions, Vivid O.L a

coloured pure warmblood from imported international jumping lines, Louie O.L a warmblood, thoroughbred cross and Goldcard O.L a palomino warmblood, station-bred cross. All are available for public service, but this coming season Vivid will only be available for AI services as the intention is to compete him in the show ring.

The stud keeps a band of six broodmares rotating the foaling so mares foal only every second year.

Progeny is handled from an early age but not broken in until they are four or five years old and have fully matured.

The next few months will be busy at O.L Pintos as the next crop of youngsters will be `brought on’ for the new show season later in the year.

“We are happy to say we are proving the dream we started with,” says Martin.

“I spend a lot of time with them, taking them at their own pace. I never back a horse if I think he will buck, I wait until it’s ready to accept a rider.”

Since the horses are mature when broken they often are taken straight into learning to jump and then into low level competitions.

Tired of tyres

“In all 85% of those tyres end up in landfills where they leach contaminates that pose a long term risk to the environment. We need to find economic ways to put them to better use. Possibilities include processing the tyres for road surfacing products, converting them into floor tiles, useable fuels and recycling the steel.”

The working group will look at schemes in other countries and develop options and guiding principles for New Zealand.

The government expects to receive the report detailing options by April next year.

They have also been used as planters, and in a few instances, packed with earth to provide alternative eco-homes on lifestyle blocks.

However, this is a limited resource for tyre recycling, so much so that the government has come up with $133,000 in funding for the Product Stewardship Foundation to explore recycling options for used tyres.

“We have a significant environmental problem in New Zealand with the disposal of about 4 million tyres annually at the end of their useful life,” a government spokesman said.

The Motor Trade Association is a lead member of the investigating group and manager, Dougal Morrison, says it is good to see common sense prevail.

“There are only so many silage stacks in New Zealand. Most tyres, even if collected by reputable collectors end up in landfills around the country.”

MTA would like to see around 4 million tyres collected each year and processed into other products.

As part of its nationwide quad bike safety campaign, Department of Labour health and safety inspectors will again be visiting farms in an effort to reduce accidents.

Last year 400 farms were visited during the autumn round of the campaign with nearly one third of those issued with a written warning or improvement notice.

In the spring campaign almost one half of the 503 farms visited received written warning or improvement notices.

Department of Labour spokesperson Ona de Rooy said inspectors also talk to farmers about the four key safety steps and provide them with copies of the Quad Bike Safety Guidelines.

“Our hope is that we will see a sustained improvement from farmers,” said Ms de Rooy.

“Farms are workplaces and farmers must remember that they have a

introduced the Quad Bike Farm Licence in August 2010.

The Quad Bike Farm Licence consists of a practical training package covering safe quad bike riding practices.

With the payout high and interest low, it’s a really good time to fix the things that are causing some grief around the Dairy.Before you upgrade to new Milfos cup removers or a Milfos Variable Drive Vacuum System it would be sensible to evaluate things that could impact on your proposed upgrade.Sparkies generally do a great job, however, we regularly come across wiring of all sorts that has been installed incorrectly.For instance we see the right cable used on say, a milk pump controller, but still bundled with everything else so it creates interference with the controller and bingo, a slightly crazy controller. Unless you know what to look for it can be a painful process to find as it looks like a faulty controller.This is important for all sorts of systems from pulsation controllers to cup removers and the more sophisticated the system the more careful you have to be. We recommend keeping data cables as far away from power as possible.We have all heard about stray voltage, yes it does exist and can cause all sorts of issues, we have found a major source is the cable and terminations between Variable drives and Motors.There is a lot of documentation supplied with variable drives with regard to the cable to be used and metal glands for terminations etc, these are minimums and a good Sparky will follow manufacturer’s recommendations or better. 1. Milking Machine Automation: This is all about milk quality, convenience and saving you money. This automation is generally considered during new machine installation, although most products can be economically retrofitted as well. Products like auto washes, auto drains, iNTELFLOW variable drive milk pump and iNTELVAC Vacuum pump controllers are common. Other less known examples include the Multiport Wash Glands (so you don’t have to park a rotary platform and plug it in to wash) or our iCONVERTER Chilling system, capable of delivering milk to the vat snap chilled, look after the vat temperature and produce heaps of hot water. Think about the electricity savings! These things are all designed for maximum returns for your business.

Many spring calving herds generally produce only 30-35% of their milk after December, often due to low milk yields in the latter part of lactation and/or short lactations. This indicates there may be an opportunity to increase farm income through a combination of higher daily yields later on, and extending days in milk for another 20-40 days. The extra milk produced will increase farm pro� tability, as its value exceeds the marginal cost of producing it, as overheads have already been covered. There would also be a carry over bene� t to the next lactation if feeding supplements also increase condition scores at drying off.

There are an increasing range of supplements being offered to dairy farmers, of widely varying nutritional value and handling characteristics. These can be used effectively to reduce feed costs whether purchased on their own, in blends or meals, according to feed storage, handling and feeding facilities and equipment on individual farms.

There are a number of potential pitfalls when purchasing and using unfamiliar feeds that need to be considered. High moisture feed prices should be converted to a dry matter and energy basis, and allowances made for losses in handling and storage, to gain a better understanding of their costs. Care needs to be exercised with many of the energy density predictions based on laboratory analyses, as these may be incorrect if based on inappropriate calibrations or calculations.

Many of the supplements available are not complete feeds, being by-products of some food or other manufacturing process. Therefore, it is important to understand their nutritional

composition, to identify how best they can be included in a balanced ration. This will also help minimise any risks associated with feeding some high risk feeds, such as those containing high levels of rapidly degradable starch or sugar, which could lead to acidosis.

Supplementary feeds can comprise a signi� cant part of the daily ration, often exceeding 15% on a dry matter basis. The higher the proportion of supplements, which includes maize or whole crop silages, and the lower the proportion of pasture, then the more imbalanced rations can become. It is common to balance for protein, but less so for the major trace minerals and vitamins, which can signi� cantly compromise production, health and fertility.

Therefore, it is important to seek sound advice on the best products to avoid or correct any imbalances, which can easily be determined using a reliable feed rationing programme. If supplementary feeds are fed in troughs in paddocks, on feed pads or in barns, then appropriate mineral and if necessary vitamin balancers can be added to or mixed in with these.

It is slightly more dif� cult to include minerals if feeding supplements in milking sheds, unless these have been blended and pelleted, as there may be risks of blockages or separation if inappropriate grades, ie too � ne, of minerals have been used. This may be the case with mixes made on farm, added to which is the risk of inaccurate weighing and mixing. Therefore, it will generally be safer to use products specially formulated for this purpose.

In our agricultural history over the last hundred years, thousands of young men and women began their farming careers starting on wages. Those who chose the dairy industry worked on wages followed later on by 29%, 39% and 50/50 sharemilking agreements with dairy farm owners.

It is generally accepted that sharemilking originated from the Scottish concept of share farming and was melded with the American share-cropping arrangement in the 1880s to produce an agreement which has led to the development and institutionalisation of sharemilking in the New Zealand dairy industry.

In 1937, the Sharemilking Agreements Act was introduced by statute of Parliament. This lower order sharemilking Act allowed young men and women to be independent contractors, without having to own dairy cows to enter into the New Zealand dairy industry. Many over the years have purchased their own farms.

The Sharemilking Agreements Order 2011 has been ratified by Parliament and while there have been some changes to dividend related payments, it is still, we believe, the best performance related employment agreement available for dairy farm owners today, when employing an employee in a farming management position.

As the farm manager, the sharemilker is responsible for the employment of staff and the farm owner is not subject to concerns about staff employment, the involvement of statutory and annual holidays, sick leave and ACC payments. All this is the responsibility of the sharemilker.

The farm owner still controls the farming business under a sharemilking agreement and he is comforted by the knowledge that if he has a good sharemilker and production increases, the remuneration for the farm owner and sharemilker reflects the benefit.

managers on a kilogram of milk solids basis. This is called a Walsh type of agreement. In doing so they run the risk of the IRD not accepting that the employees are deemed as independent contractors and have sought PAYE reimbursement payments from farmer employers, who have entered such contract agreements.

There is a big difference between the status of independent contractor and that of an employee (who is covered by the Employment Relations Act). The law requires that employers look at the control test. What is the degree of control that the employer or principal exerts over the work an employee or contractor is to do and the manner in which the work is to be done.

The greater the extent to which the principal specifies work content, hours and methods and can supervise, regulate and/or dismiss a person, the more likely it is that the person would fall under the category of being an employee, not an independent contractor.

We have to focus more on just what happens to fertiliser nutrients after application, and find out what loss mechanisms can be reduced. Ironically, with phosphate (P) we have problems at both ends of the spectrum. On many soils, and particularly the allophanic ash soils, P is ‘fixed’ onto aluminium (Al) on the surface of soil clay particles. These soils used to be called highly ‘P-retentive’.

It is fashionable in some quarters today to say they have a ‘high P storage capacity’, but this is a misnomer. As your dictionary says, a store is somewhere you put something until you need it, and can then take it out of.

However the P fixed on clay particles, especially allophone, just gets stuck, retained, or fixed (any of these words are accurate), more and more tightly, more

and more deeply under Al, over time. Even when you stop putting maintenance P on, the rate at which P is ‘desorbed’ into plant-available form is far, far too slow to maintain good production. ‘Stored’ indeed!

The great Joe Karlovsky from MAF’s Ruakura Research Station calculated over 40 years ago that to maintain a high level of production on a dairy farm on allophanic ash soil required 15 kg P per year more than it took to maintain exactly the same level of production on a low P-retention soil. Today, Overseer gives about the same difference in requirements. There is anecdotal evidence that the rate of P fixation is slowly declining, but if it is, it is very, very slow!

Can phosphate requirements be reduced?Farming today faces new pressures. On the one hand, good production levels are necessary for farm profitability. On the other hand, the levels of fertiliser input this requires can lead to nutrient enrichment of streams, rivers and lakes. What to do?

offsets fixation losses, it also means a lot more fertiliser granules sitting on the surface after application. As these slowly dissolve into the soil over a few weeks, they are susceptible to some of the P — either dissolved or as particles — being washed into waterways by rainfall-induced run-off. The more P that has been applied in one hit, the bigger the risk.

Small, frequent applications of P would greatly reduce the risk of run-off, but at prohibitive cost.

A far better solution is to find ways to reduce the amount of P that gets fixed in the soil, so we don’t have to put as much on in the first place. Very exciting research in this area is being done in several countries, with very promising results.

Rural ladies who regularly have to tog up in overalls will be well aware of just how difficult it is to use the little room (toilet). The struggle to get out of our overalls is the equivalent of a strip-tease dance — sometimes down to even our gumboots if we have to go inside the house

while Zane was working on Craig’s parents’ farm and she found herself wearing overalls and wanting something better and more convenient for women.

After conducting a survey of the farming community and spending time on the design process Zane started selling her work wear for women in late 2010.

Her childhood dreams of one day having a fashion label of her own have come true in a small farm house, 17,000 kilometres away from home, and instead of gracing the catwalks of Europe the ‘Zanux’ label struts the cowsheds, stables, gardens and farms of rural New Zealand as women’s work wear.

Made in New Zealand — the 100

percent cotton overalls have pretty coloured fabrics with contrasts on shoulders, back and front pockets, and places to insert knee pads when needed and — of course those magical hip zips.

Zanux is run by a small team based in the South Wairapapa. Sales are made online or by mail order or from any of the field days’ stalls that Zane regularly attends.

It runs from May 5 to June 17 with an increase in the daily bag limit to 10. This shorter season is seen as more likely to have a positive influence on future duck population while also being the favoured option for hunters.

Conditions have also been ideal for both habitat and food. Birds will have had ample opportunity and body condition to rear good broods or even double clutch.

Training working dogs takes years of experience and a real passion for the craft

A passion for dogs

Traditionally it’s been the realm of hardy farmers. But for former city girl, Anna Holland, that’s a mould that just had to be broken and she’s sharing her knowledge in a successful North Island tour.

School holidays on her uncle’s farm ignited a passion for working on the land that, much to her parents’ consternation, led to her becoming one of the few women shepherds in New Zealand.

Twenty-five years on, and with an abiding passion for breeding and training top-quality working dogs, Anna now lives on a remote Wairarapa coastal sheep station. She quickly realised that training dogs for other people was a lot of hard work for very little return and hit on the idea of training people to train their own dogs.

A couple of early courses run in the Wairarapa for women were well attended and very well received. Encouraged by the positive feedback Anna ran her first North Island tour with a couple of dogs and a handful of quiet Romneys. Again the feedback and participation were both great which brings us to the current tour starting in Taupo on April 22nd.

Course participants are taken through the steps that Anna uses to train her own prize-winning dogs. For authenticity she uses untrained or partially trained dogs; proof positive that her methods work. As if that wasn’t enough, the mornings are free. Students only pay if they want to finish the course by attending the afternoon.
