and gun violence On Tuesday, there was a seminar on humantrafficking held during lunch. Evan Gorstein, along with other STANDmembers, presented on this issue which is affecting people all across theglobe, including many Americans. Then, on Wednesday during lunch,Gabe Wacks taught a seminar on gay rights, in which we learned aboutdifferent laws and treatment of those of the LGBT communitythroughout the world. Following school on Thursday, a group of students attended the JewishCouncil on Urban Affairs' "From Handguns to Hope" Seder. This mockseder, held at Beth Shalom Bnai Zaken Ethiopian Hebrew Congregationwas a very powerful experience. We heard speakers, rabbis, andreverends, as well as spoken word poetry, all presented in the frameworkof a Passover Seder. It was a call to action to unite as a single city, andcreate a better city in which youth do not have to be afraid to walkoutside of their homes. On Friday during Tefillah, Dr. Guterman spokeon the issue of gun violence. During tefillah, STAND held an "Amidah,"in which all the school was asked to stand up throughout Shacharit insolidarity with those whose human rights are denied. To complete Human Rights Week, this Saturday night, STAND is hostingthe annual STAND Sleep-In, in which students are invited to spend thenight at CJHS, all the while participating in a series of education andadvocacy activities concerning various human rights issues, genocides, and conflict areas. The Sleep-In starts at 9:30 p.m. on Saturday night, and ends at 8:00 a.m. Sunday morning. Thanks to everybody for makingthis a fun and educational human rights week, and we hope to see you atthe Sleep-In. We will be having a live blog during the event too! Check itout here."

A Taste of Torah: Freedom From versus Freedom To In 1948, Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan was quoted as saying:

"The establishment of the State of Israel is the second challenge of themodern world to the survival of Judaism. The first challenge cameabout 150 years ago, with our emancipation from political and

economic thralldom and with our admission into the body politic ofwestern mankind. We have not yet recovered from the impact of thatfirst challenge."
