Celebration of the Arts Curriculum In Terms 3 and 4 we look forward to celebrating the Arts Curriculum in all its various forms – drama, dance, music and visual art. The staff have planned some wonderful activities which I know will be enjoyed by all our students and school community. In addition you may wish to note the following events in your diary: The annual WCC Young People’s Arts Festival begins in September and we are taking part in various activities including the Artsplash Concert on Tuesday 19 September at 5.15pm at the Michael Fowler Centre. All our Year 3-4 students will be participating in this evening of music and song along with students from other primary schools in the Wellington region. During this term each class Year 1-6 will be presenting a ‘Celebration of Learning’ for parents to come and enjoy. You will be advised of dates and times by each teacher and we are timetabling these presentations carefully especially for families that have children at both sites. This year the Year 7-8 production will be held in Term 4 and script-writing is well underway. All Year 7- 8 students will be involved in the production and will have the opportunity to be editors, actors, singers, stage crew, ICT, props or sound. We are looking forward to a great evening of entertainment by our senior students. All classes will be working on calendar art for the school PTA fundraising initiative and the students love to take part in this activity. There is something very special about individual students’ art work being published in card, calendar and diary form. These will be available for purchase later in Term 4. Celebration of the Arts Curriculum

In Terms 3 and 4 we look forward to celebrating the Arts Curriculum in all its various forms – drama, dance,

music and visual art. The staff have planned some wonderful activities which I know will be enjoyed by all our

students and school community. In addition you may wish to note the following events in your diary:

The annual WCC Young People’s Arts Festival begins in September and we are taking part in various

activities including the Artsplash Concert on Tuesday 19 September at 5.15pm at the Michael Fowler

Centre. All our Year 3-4 students will be participating in this evening of music and song along with

students from other primary schools in the Wellington region.

During this term each class Year 1-6 will be presenting a ‘Celebration of Learning’ for parents to come

and enjoy. You will be advised of dates and times by each teacher and we are timetabling these

presentations carefully especially for families that have children at both sites.

This year the Year 7-8 production will be held in Term 4 and script-writing is well underway. All Year 7-

8 students will be involved in the production and will have the opportunity to be editors, actors,

singers, stage crew, ICT, props or sound. We are looking forward to a great evening of entertainment

by our senior students.

All classes will be working on calendar art for the school PTA fundraising initiative and the students

love to take part in this activity. There is something very special about individual students’ art work

On Thursday 27 July Year 1 students celebrated 100 days at school. We made crowns and had a special

afternoon tea. Mrs Barrett came and asked the children and teachers what they remembered most about

their first day at school. There were some interesting answers as you can imagine!

Year 1 and 2 students are enjoying our trips to the ASB Centre in Kilbirnie where coaches work with our

classes on gymnastics, floorball (hockey) and a variety of ball skills.

2017 Year 7-8 Science Fair Results

In the first week of Term 3 the Year 7-8 Science Fair was on display in the hall and we are very proud of the

students and the hard work and effort they have put into their individual science projects. Congratulations to

those students whose science project qualified for the NIWA Wellington Regional Science Fair later this term.

Student Well-being

There has been much public discussion about youth mental health recently. The Ministry of Education has

asked all schools to let parents know about their website which has links to organisations that can be

contacted for help, support and advice: www.parents.education.govt.nz/mental-health/

From the Library

We continue to seek volunteers to help in the library with processing new library books and classroom literacy

resources as well as mending existing stock. We are also about to embark on an overhaul of the Year 1-4 Book

Baskets which are used in our junior literacy programmes. If you have any spare time – at school or home –

and could assist with these tasks then we would love to hear from you. Please contact Derek Piper at

[email protected]

Student Council Sausage Sizzles – 5 & 6 July

We celebrated the end of Term 2 with two sausage sizzles organised by the Student Council. We raised funds

for Ronald McDonald House. The PTA purchased some large drink dispensers for our delicious drinks which

included lemon, lime and orange and mixed berry. These were very popular as was the record number of

sausages purchased by all the students including our lovely Weld St visitors too! Thank you to all the parents

who supported our fundraiser and assisted us with the barbeque on two very busy lunchtimes. It was a

perfect way to end the term.

Beyond the Backyard

Congratulations to Kana Shinoda whose story was

chosen to be published in "Beyond the Backyard",

an anthology of stories by intermediate school

students. This was a national competition which

attracted 600 entries from schools throughout New

Zealand and Kana was invited to attend the launch

event. We are very proud of your wonderful

achievement, Kana, and look forward to reading

your story in the “Beyond the Backyard” anthology.

Wadestown School Working Bee - Saturday 9th September

Please mark this day in your calendar. We have lots of projects to complete and even a couple of hours of

your time is a huge help. The working bee helps contribute to the school’s maintenance programme,

maintaining the gardens, grounds, fencing and general maintenance items. The parents provide the labour

and it’s a great way to catch up with the parents and families that make up our school community and give

the school its yearly spring-clean.

We have a number of projects including tidying up the grounds, gardening, pruning, planting, building and

painting. If you’re a willing volunteer, please email Michael Calvert with your details: [email protected]

If you can’t make it, please consider a small donation to this worthwhile school project. You can make an

online deposit to the PTA account: 12-3140-0348889-00 with WkgBee as the reference – every bit helps!

Join us for the next PTA meeting: Wednesday 16 August, 7.30pm in the school staff room (Rose St). All

parents are very welcome.

Kind regards,

Sally Barrett
