Starting as a small Austrian locksmithery, the history of Waagner-Biro trances the economic history of Austria. Over these years, the company has evolved from a small workshop to a specialist in modern engineering and steel construction with a global reputation.

While since its foundation the company may have diversified into new areas, an uncompromising commitment to steel engineering remains at the forefront of all that Waagner-Biro does and our mastery of steel engineering, as well as the poten-tial of steel as a material, are showcased in capital cities around the world, from the Lord Norman Foster designed Queen Elizabeth II Great Court in the British Museum, London, the Cuppola of the Reichstag in Berlin, and the Cour Visconti at Paris’ Louvre – which now houses the museum’s Department of Islamic Art – to the Adnec Tower and the Yas Marina Hotel, Abu Dhabi.

—An uncompromising attitude to high quality steel processing is common to all core business fields of Waagner Biro. The approach is evident in the spectacular architectural creations of the Steel and Glass Engineering division, and in the stage equipment we supply to the world’s foremost performance venues; it applies equally to steel bridge construction and special machinery. In every case – as is apparent in all of the company’s products and solutions – Waagner-Biro sets out to achieve the extraordinary. Waagner-Biro is a steel engineering organisa-tion based in Vienna. Founded in 1854, the tradition-conscious company has amassed nearly 160 years of experience. Today, Waagner-Biro has more than a thousand employees working at more than a dozen locations in Europe, the Middle East and Southeast Asia.

Waagner Biro’s commitment to achieving the extraordinary has extended into the design and build of bridges that are also as much landmarks as they are well-realised and functional infra-structure projects. The Puente Continental, for example, is the longest suspension bridge in Peru, the Donaustadt Bridge is one of Vienna’s most recognisable modern landmarks, while Austria’s Europe Bridge was once the highest pier bridge in Europe, leading the six-lane Brenner Motorway 190m above the Wipptal River.

As one of the world‘s largest suppliers of stage equipment, Waagner-Biro has delivered to numerous performing arts centres around the world. As a global leader in the market, the company has mastered the art of developing and installing technical equipment which, in opera houses, theatres, music and multi-purpose halls, operate very quietly, quickly, safely and virtu-ally invisibly. And, to keep meeting demands, the company is continuously expanding the boundaries of what is technically possible. The company‘s list of references is correspondingly impressive and has delivered stage technology to many internationally renowned houses. Among them are: the Vienna State Opera, the German Opera in Berlin, the Copenhagen Opera House, the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona, the Op-era and Ballet House in Ljubljana, The Stavanger Concert Hall in Norway, La Fenice in Venice, the MCHAT Art Theatre in Moscow, the Sydney Opera House, the Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires, the Teatro Municipal in Rio, the Seoul Arts Centre, the Shanghai Oriental Arts Centre and many more.

One of Waagner-Biro‘s fields of expertise is spe-cial machinery, a business area delivered exclu-sively by the entirely owned subsidiary Qualter, Hall & Co Ltd. Based in the English county of Yorkshire, Qualter Hall is a specialist supplier of mechanical engineering equipment, mining ma-chinery, conveyors, shipbuilding equipment and contract manufacturing.. Founded in 1860, the company has a long tradition of engineering that spans numerous projects in its domestic market of Great Britain and abroad.—

Al Maktoum Bridge was the first bridge in Dubai, built by Waagner Biro Gulf in 1963. It unterwent a widening in 2007 to increase the bridge’s capacity.

—On the back of decades of expertise in design-ing and building bridges, in 1964 Waagner-Biro was approached by an Austrian construction firm to work on the Al Maqta Bridge in Abu Dhabi. Completed in 1967, this was a significant milestone for both the UAE and Waagner-Biro, as the first permanent point of crossing between Abu Dhabi and the main land and marking Waagner-Biro’s entry into the Gulf market.

Following the success of the Al Maqta Bridge project, the company was asked to work with the same client on a transport connection over Dubai Creek between Bur Dubai and Deira that would still allow the passage of boats up the creek several times a day. As a result, Waagner-Biro designed and built the moving section of the Maktoum Bridge and was afterwards of-ficially registered in Dubai as Waagner Biro Gulf in 1982.

With these projects under its belt, Waagner Biro Gulf became known and respected within Region and, drawing on connections established through bridge building, the company designed and constructed the first diesel operated power stations in Dubai.

As UAE grew, so too did Waagner Biro Gulf, its services, its portfolio and its list of references. Dubai’s booming population saw the company be contracted to work on the opening section of the Garhoud Bridge, while existing bridges also required widening to cope with the increasing usage. Waagner Biro Gulf also won a contract to design and build 13 pedestrian bridges through-out the city.

The expansion of Waagner Biro Gulf as a company has also been evolutionary and in line with the growth of Dubai, the UAE and the Gulf region.

Today, the bridge division continues to work on a vast range of bridge projects, from excep-tional and technically-demanding moveable bridges and special bridges, as well as industry-changing modular bridges, panel bridges and more standard bridge structures.

Since existing structures required technically adept and highly-skilled maintenance of moving parts, the maintenance division came about in answer to this demand. The maintenance divi-sion and fabrication yard provide full-service preventative, corrective and annual maintenance of bridges, roads, underpasses, tunnels and civil structures, as well as buildings, historical monu-ments and aviation facilities.

Similarly, the marine division was born of a need for accomplished marine engineering expertise in order for Waagner Biro Gulf to complete its complex bridge solutions. In the meantime, the marine division has expanded into the complete design and build of harbours, marinas, breakwaters, jetties and wharves, as well as beach improvement and protection works.

Finally, with a history of working on power stations in the region, the company had wit-nessed at firsthand the need for sustainable waste water solutions, especially in urban areas. Waagner Biro Gulf thus established the environment division which is now the Middle East’s leading turnkey contractor for advanced reed bed systems – a worldwide approved sustainable solution of constructed wetlands or Reed Bed treatment.

The common thread between these four divisions is that Waagner Biro Gulf is a com-plete turnkey contractor, offering not only complete in-house design and build solutions, but also repair, maintenance, and the services of an expansive fabrication yard all under the one roof.—

—The Bridge Engineering Division of Waagner Biro Gulf operates throughout the GCC in the fields of bridge, mechanical and steel construc-tion, and maintenance. Although we also work in concrete, with many bridges created as compos-ite structures, steel is our true forte. In this field, no other building material comes close to the kind of possibilities offered by steel.

Flexible, adaptable and strong enough for areas prone to earthquakes, steel also requires shorter construction times while providing long service life. This makes it perfect for this region. Steel is also 100% recyclable which plays an instrumen-tal role in achieving some of the highest green build regulations that are now being imple-mented across the UAE and GCC.

Waagner-Biro’s excellent reputation often plays a decisive role in the acquisition of new projects, particularly in the UAE market for the design and built of moveable bridges.

We offer complete turnkey bridge solutions. Led by a multidisciplinary team of civil, mechanical, structural and electrical engineers, and support-ed by the expertise of our head office in Vienna, we can handle the entire process from design through build and maintenance of a bridge, to eventual dismantling if required.

Combining design, consultancy and construc-tion under one roof means better communica-tion, project management and a more cost and time effective end product. Our interdisciplinary team covers everything from construction to electrical, plus we have our own fabrication yard and workshop to produce parts flexible and immediately as required.—

—Many of our specialist bridge projects span waterways. Their construction, therefore, in-volved floating equipment and extensive marine engineering capabilities. As a contractor that keeps all expertise and experience in-house, Waagner Biro Gulf moved into the marine engineering field in order to accomplish these projects. We invested in experts, training, tech-nology and equipment and created the marine and coastal engineering division in 1997.

We saw the potential to offer the same services to other clients. As Waagner Biro Gulf was already known throughout the region, we soon won our first public sector contracts for the nourish-ment and erosion protection of Dubai’s public beaches. This was followed by an approach from the Dubai government to design and build float-ing water transport stations for abras, taxis, buses and water ferries.

Today, we cover almost every field of marine engineering, including the design, manufacture, construction and installation of harbours, mari-nas and berthing facilities, as well as piling. We are experts in the development, improvement and protection of beaches and coastlines. And we fabricate barges and vessels. We draw upon our knowledge and experience to provide value design and build solutions that meet clients’ requirements. Plus, as a medium-sized company, Waagner Biro Gulf is unique in the region in being able to react to jobs of all sizes.

The Marine and Coastal Engineering Division stands for precision and competence paired with flexibility and reliability. It is these qualities that have seen us build long-term relationships with customers such as the Dubai government, with whom we have worked continually for many years. We undertake everything from maintaining Dubai’s beaches to wharfage pro-jects and floating water transport stations that have changed the shape of Dubai Creek & its coastline.

Waagner Biro Gulf takes responsibility for the whole process. Housing a design team, a fabrication yard and workshop, a construction company and marine engineers all under one roof means better communication and project management. In turn, this creates time and cost savings for our clients.—

—In 1993, after the construction of the Al Mak-toum Third Lift Span in Dubai, Waagner Biro Gulf got into facitilies management, operation and MEP maintenance and operation contracts for the Dubai Government. A first contract was awarded in the following year for the maintenace of the Al Maktoum Bridge. Waagner Biro Gulf has had that contract since 1994 and has it still. In the years since, we have established ourselves as a truly reliable bridge and tunnel maintenance contractor. In 2010 we entered the Abu Dhabi market as we expand our maintenance services throughout the GCC. We are now expanding and enhancing our construction and mechanical maintenance capabilities, as we bring our exper-tise to other structures. Waagner Biro Gulf offers comprehensive facili-ties management services designed to meet the distinct and diverse needs of each client and project. We achieve this by dedicating a team to each client, providing a single point of contact that can deal with all jobs, big and small. The maintenance and infrastructure manage-ment service that Waagner Biro Gulf provides is expansive and wide-ranging. Whether simple road or infrastructure projects, or complicated mechanical projects such as the Floating Bridge in Dubai, we produce a complete checklist of preventative, corrective and annual maintenance requirements. We also supply annual reports for all maintenance contracts, so each client receives Waagner Biro Gulf ‘s professional and expert suggestions on how to maintain projects in the best condition possible.—

—In 2004, Waagner-Biro started the activity of building and operating conventional wastewater treatment plants in the Gulf Region. As waste-water processing requires high energy consump-tion, we decided to rethink our responsibility in the field of environmental protection and sustainability. The aim was to meet all economic, social and environmental requirements. In 2007 Waagner-Biro decided to invest in a research for developing an environment friendly waste water reuse system for the Gulf Region.

The first pilots systems were built for Dubai Municipality. While the performance of the water treated was closely monitored throughout the year, we received numerous Awards for best green technology recognition. Today our technology is a success story approved and requested by our clients.

The principle of reed bed technology is to filter water through different basins of sand

and gravel filters planted by reeds. The roots of the plants open channels in the sand to allow a permanent vertical percolation of the wastewater to be treated. Inside the specific soil filter the microbial processes stimulate the natural breakdown of polluting compounds. This is possible due to the special characteristics of wetland plants, such as reeds, which transfer substantial amounts of atmospheric oxygen through to their root systems encouraging an extraordinary quantity and species diversity of micro-organisms to flourish around their roots. Organic pollutants are broken down as a food source by the micro-organisms whilst other contaminants, such as metals, are fixed in humic acid and cation exchange bonds in the soil or mineral substrates in which these plants are rooted.

Waagner Biro Gulf 's design and built of red bed systems offer the best eco-friendly and cost effec-tive solution to treat and recycle wastewater.—
