Dear Reader,
I don’t normally boast about my books, but Gaia Warriors is different.
It’s important and it’s special. Important, because it’s about climate
change, the biggest and scariest problem that human beings have ever
had to face. Special, because it isn’t just about the problem, but about
the solutions and the people who are finding them.
It sets out the science of climate change clearly and simply and takes a
practical approach to what we can do to cope with the change we can’t
avoid, and prevent the change we can.
There really isn’t another book about climate change like it.
One of the reasons that I feel OK about boasting is because
I didn’t write this book alone. It was my privilege to work
with earth scientist and inventor of Gaia theory, James
Lovelock, on the development of the ideas. James’ vision of the way our planet regulates its climate
runs through much of the book. I also worked with many other scientists, entrepreneurs, artists,
campaigners, designers, architects and students, hearing about how they are increasing our abilities to
understand, and cope with, climate change. So Gaia Warriors is a book full of voices; my voice, James’
and those of the many people around the world who talked to me about their work.
The struggle to save ourselves from climate catastrophe isn’t going to be easy. It is going to be a
fight - that’s why the book is called Gaia Warriors. The fight isn’t going to involve guns and bombs,
the weapons Gaia Warriors need are ideas, energy and determination. In fact, judging by the many
“warriors” I interviewed for the book, involvement in this battle is exciting, challenging, even fun.
There’s no hand-wringing, gloom and doom or waving of reproachful green fingers in Gaia Warriors.
As one of the young people I interviewed for the book said.
“Telling someone the world is going to end because you are a bad person is not effective. It just
doesn’t work to make people feel guilty and powerless.”
So my aim with this book is to empower, inform and inspire young people. To give
them the knowledge they need to understand the problem that climate change presents
to humanity, and the confidence to be part of the solution.
Never mind Xbox and Wii, orcs, Sauron and Voldemort; this is the real battle, and
fighting it will be the making of us.
