sault against Western Europe. There are the advantages,
then. to ha\ing a Western "roadblock" 110 miles behind
advance Sm'iet formations. The potential of West Berlin becomes even more signif
icant when one considers the situation of the Soviet army
in Eastern Europe. Surrounded by a hostile population and
unable to depend upon its satellites. the Russian Army must guard every inch of its communications with Russia. Hence, a Free Berlin on Ih~ main supply line is a prime objective
to the Soviets. And to dispose of Berlin by nuclear attack. according to
military writers, would also dispose of the C'ity's traffic and communication fad lilies at a time when they would be most
needed . And any direct Communist attack on West Berlin
would invite a Western nuclear counterattack on Russia itself.
Hence, we can immediately judge the significance of Free Berlin in the defense of Western EuroDe.
To make this role possible, the Allied garrisons in West Berlin have been reinforced in recent weeks.
It is now two months since the Berlin drama began and thus. far it appears we have kept our nerve. mobilizing our
lull moral and physical Corces. Meanwhile, the Big Three is
determined not to take any hasty action that might set the Cuse of a very tense situation.
• • • TUE HISTORY of Berlin goes back to 1244. By 1442,
it became the residence of the Hohenzollerns the roval German family that eventually ruled Prussia a~d instalied
as emperors of G~rmanY in tbe 19th and 20th centuries.
The significance of Berlin as a great city is to be noted by its improvement and expansion after being devastated in thl' Thirty Year War in the 17th century. the Seven Year
War in the 181h century and the Franco·Prussian War in the 19th century Berlin was again ravaged by bombs during \Vorl:] War n and its resurrection-at least in West Berlinhas been brilliant.
One more footnote we'd like to add about Berlin is that the Tr2aty of Berlin in 1878. ending the Russo·Turkish War that doomed the Ottoman Empire is the rise of several nations which are remembered only in our stamp album: Servia. !'tlontenegro. Bosnia and Herzegovina.
