Multiplication Facts with

Br oomsticks If childr en ar e encour aged to lear n mathematics thr ough their own

effor ts and exper ience under the super vision of a dedicated teacher,

they develop a feel for what they lear n and ar e able to find their way

confidently in the wor ld of mathematical thinking. But to develop it, a

teacher has to avoid spoon feeding his students all the time anddiscour age them f r om lear ning by mer e r epetition.

Leaning tables by r ote carr ies with it a long and hoar y tr adition.

Teacher s often encour age it and par ents under scor e it as the latter

have themselves gone thr ough the mill in their own school days.

With the advent of calculator s it would be ludicr ous to insist on r ote

lear ning when childr en can easily lear n how to build the tables

meaningfully and r emember and r ecall basic multiplication facts

thr ough adequate familiar ization, just as they lear n a language with

natur al ease. The only thing that is needed is a stimulating

envir onment.



Multiplication Facts with

Br oomsticks Since the gr eatest basic multiplication fact is 9 x 9 = 81 what is

needed fir st is a set of eighteen (9 + 9 = 18) almost str aight

br oomsticks, which ar e available in all homes. Ever y lower pr imar y

child can even be asked to use them as a kit in class as well as at

home, par ticular ly while building and leaning the tables. The exer cise star ts with a few pr eliminar y exper iences of discover y

by childr en. Two br oomsticks can be placed only in two ways: (1)

meeting each other at a point and (2) par allel to, each other . These

r epr esent the incidence pr oper ties of two lines on a plane. With

mor e than two br oomsticks childr en can easily place them in such away that any pair of them ar e par allel to each other and they can

use another stick to meet all of them by placing it acr oss and count

the meeting points.

List down the topics and skills in the KBSRsyllabus that can be taught using the geoboadand show how they can be done.
