Demanding applicationsifm magnetic proximity sensors provide non-contact indication for position andspeed applications. The sensors can detect a magnet through materials such asstainless steel, non-ferrous metal, aluminum, plastic and wood. With the integrationof Giant Magnetoresistive (GMR) technology, ifm magnetic sensors offer extremelylong sensing ranges – up to 76 mm – and high switching frequencies.

Long sensing range and high switching frequencyMagnetic sensors have a considerably higher sensing range compared to inductivesensors. They detect damping magnets without contact up to 76 mm. ifm sensorsreach a switching frequency of more than 5,000 Hz. This high switching frequencyapplies to the whole temperature range.

Quarter-turn valve position sensors

Quarter-turn valves with pneumatic actuators are used for process control in foodprocessing applications. Typical applications include tank farms, diverter valves, valveskids, and valve banks. Accurately detecting the position of the valve is critical forprocess control. Traditionally, switchboxes have been used for position feedback. However, switchboxes are large, mounting is complex and malfunction is common.ifm offers a low-profile, non-contact solution that accurately detects when a valve isopen or closed.

AS-i valve position sensors

Integrated AS-i networking connection for pneumatic valves

Valve applications such as tank farms and valve skids requirea large number of feedback devices. These devices areconnected back to a PLC which monitors valve position. With the growing number of valves being used and minimalplant floor space available, wiring has become time-consuming and difficult to troubleshoot. To reduce wiring, asimple solution is to apply the AS-i networking system.

AS-i networks an entire system of valves with only one 2-wire cable, completelyeliminating wire bundles. Valve position sensors with AS-i connectivity provide anintegrated connection for the solenoid valve. Connection to the control unit is madewith a 2-wire AS-i cable. This solution provides remote indication of valve status and can connect to higherlevel bus systems via DeviceNet, Profibus, and Ethernet. Up to 62 quarter-turn valvefeedback devices and 62 solenoids can be connected to one AS-i master.

• Connects to higher-level bus systems

• Provides non-contact valve position

• Sensor and puck feature low-profile design that is one-quarter the size of aswitchbox

• The valve sensor uses an integrated output for the solenoid valve.

• Mounts on all ISO standard type actuators.

Please refer to pages 84 - 95 for more details and products for AS-i networking.

Continuous position feedback of rising stem valvesThe efector valvis rising stem valve position sensor is an innovative solution forindicating the position of linear valves. The sensor continuously detects the positionof rising stem valves with a stroke of up to 80mm.

The sensor is placed on top of the the valve stem with an adapter. Using the sen-sor’s pushbutton setup, the open and closed positions of the valve are established. The sensor indicates three key positions of the valve: valve open, valve closed andany intermediate position, e.g., seat lift. efector valvis sends this information to a controller.

The efector valvis sensor reliably detects the position of the stem at a resolution of0.2mm and eliminates all mechanical adjustments and significantly reduces setuptime of a valve.

Single seat and double seat valvesFor double seat valves, efector valvis detects theopen, closed and seat lift cleaning position. For single seat valves, the sensor detects the open andclosed positions and provides an additional outputfor seal contact wear.

efector dualis Pixel Counter

Pixel Counter

The Pixel Counter is a good fit in this application because the sizeand shape of the mark can vary.

A mark is used to identify parts thathave been through the manufactur-ing process. Without the mark, theparts go into quarantine, where everyunit must be manually sorted.

ifm's Pixel Counter is able to identifythat the mark is present regardless ofthe shape or size of the part, eliminat-ing the quarantine process.

efector dualis Pixel Counter

ifm’s Pixel Counter analyzes the area of an object and counts the pixels. It is ideal in applications where the object’s shape, size or color is irregular.

Potatoes in 3D

First industrial 3D level sensor that evaluates volume of food product

Accurately detects food level in bins andhoppers and on vibratory conveyors

Ideal alternative to point-level sensorsthat monitor only one point of reference

Sensor withstands harsh indoor andoutdoor environments

Provides switching and analog outputs forapplication versatility

Compact sensor uses reliable time-of-flight distance measurement

Vision sensors

Solution: ifm’s Level Sensor uses an arrayof sensing elements to indicate true level

ifm’s O3D Level Sensor monitors the entire area of a hopper. The sensor then averages outthe “hills and valleys” to provide an accurate indication of level.

Challenge: point level is not an indicationof true level

Ultrasonic or optical point level sensors monitoronly a single point versus an entire area. When“hills and valleys” are present in the product, accurate level is not actually indicated.

The right level measurement can help you improve your food processingoperation with higher accuracy and better efficiencyThe O3D Level Sensor is designed to evaluate the volume and level of product infood processing applications. A common challenge in many food processing applications is determining the accurate level of food in a hopper due to “hills andvalleys” that are created by shifting product. The compact, easy-to-use O3D LevelSensor can view an entire area of food product to determine its overall volume.

Bread baking

The O3D Level sensorcan detect if bread pansare underfilled oroverfilled for properfood production.

Raw materials in feeders/conveyors

The O3D Level Sensorcan detect raw materialsin feeders and on vibra-tory conveyors. The sen-sor can be used bothindoors and outdoorswith no impact fromexternal ambient light.

O3D Level Sensor offer solutions totypical food processing applications

Pressure sensors designed for commonhomogenizer applications

Simple pushbutton setup allows the sen-sor to be adjusted in less than 5 minutes

Each sensor has multiple outputs forflexibility

Integrated built-in display eliminates theneed for a reference gauge

Ceramic sensing element provides long-term stability of pressure measurement

Monitoring homogenizationHomogenizers are used to emulsify one liquid into another or to evenly distributesolids throughout a liquid to improve the product’s stability and other characteris-tics. In the dairy industry, milk product is pumped into a homogenizer and, undervery high pressure, pushed through small screens. This breaks up the fat globules in the milk and creates a consistent homogeneous mixture.

For repeatable process results, homogenizing pressure can be monitored andcontrolled using ifm pressure sensors designed specifically for this purpose.

PY9970 is fitted with a mounting block and diaphragm seal filled with an FDA-approved fluid. PY9000 is designed to mount with fittings already existing on the homogenizer.

Steam pigtail protects instruments fromfailure due to excessive temperature

Units available with analog and switchingoutputs for DC applications and a solidstate relay output for AC applications

Steam is used in many industrial applications for food processing, drying, buildingheating, etc. with typical saturated steam parameters of 150 psi at 350 °F. Standardpressure sensors are rated below 200 °F and sanitary pressure sensors are ratedbelow 300 °F. The steam pigtail (also known as siphon or condensate loop) iscommonly used to protect instruments from exposure to high temperature.

As steam loses heat, it condenses back into water (known as condensate). The tem-perature of the condensate is much lower than the temperature of the saturatedsteam. The geometry of the pigtail allows the steam to condense through the loopand provides an isolating temperature barrier for the sensor.

The UP0011 steam pigtail from ifm includes a 1/2” NPT male process connection forthe steam line, a manual isolation valve and a 1/4” NPT male connection to fit anyof the pressure sensors on the opposite page.

Very large temperature reductions with the pigtailThe chart at right gives an approximation of the temperature reduction when using a steampigtail. Use the following steps:

1. Find steam pressure across the bottom axis.Example shows 150 psi.

2. Go straight up on the chart to the curve forambient temperature. Example shows 80 °F.

3. Go straight across to find the estimatedtemperature at the instrument. Example shows approximately 128 °F.

Easy pushbutton setup with flexiblemounting

Versions are available with standard NPTfittings for non-sanitary applications

Flow sensors for sanitary applicationsThe SI series flow sensors for sanitary applications are solid state alternatives tomechanical flow switches for sensing the flow rate of liquids and gases. Becausethere are no moving parts to jam or break, ifm efector flow switches eliminate themaintenance headaches of mechanical flow switches.

Switching output, mounts in processThe one-piece sensor includes an LED status display and stainless steel RTD probe in a compact unit. The probe is inserted directly into the medium. Applicationparameters are set using the microprocessor-based pushbutton setup. The sensordetects when the flow rate falls above or below the flow setpoint.

Multiple sanitary mounting optionsifm efector sanitary sensors connect to industry standard adapters and fittings. This flexibility allows the sensor to be easily installed in many different applicationsthat have various mounting requirements.

TP module turns any RTD into a programmableanalog temperature transmitter

The innovative TP transmitter module with “plug and play” M12connectors solves the common installation and environmental prob-lems associated with conventional terminal chamber-head transmitters.

Error sources from screw terminals, wiring mistakes, and fluid ingressare eliminated. An integrated LED gives local indication that thetransmitter is powered and transmitting.

Completely configurableCompatible with any Pt100 or Pt1000 probe, the TP temperaturemodule verifies the type of RTD and automatically makes the correctsettings. Usable with 2, 3, or 4-wire RTDs, the TP can be scaled andoffset using ifm’s USB interface. With it’s “overmolded” construction, the TP is suitable for harsh environments allowing for use in almost any application.

New RTDs with integrated Tri-clamp® process connectionsThe TM 48xx and TM 49xx RTDs do not require a separate sanitaryprocess adapter. The one-piece RTD probe with integrated Tri-clampconnection eliminates potential septic ingress points.

ifm’s revolutionary design incorporates a very thin sensor sheath whichminimizes the amount of thermal mass separating the RTD elementfrom the process media. This innovative design results in an extremelyfast 1…3 second response speed.

The RTD probes can be used with a RTD card on a plc rack, on atemperature controller and on ifm’s TR sensors (pages 68 - 69).

Dual RTD design allows for self-verifyingdrift detection

Eliminates need for regular and costlycalibration checks

Increased process safety The TAD temperature transmitter features two high-precision and stable RTD meas-uring elements that monitor the process to ensure that a developing sensor drift isdetected and reliably diagnosed. If one element fails, the process continues with the second measuring element (back-up function). Thus, no calibration is necessary. With this technology, the TAD provides long-term, highly accurate temperatureindication in sanitary applications included in food, beverage and pasteurizationprocesses.

Using configuration software, drift thresholds and parameters can be easily set. After the setpoints are established, the TAD continuously self-monitors temperaturedrift. By providing immediate temperature drift detection, cyclical monitoring is nolonger necessary.

Actuator Sensor-interfaceoverview

www.ifm.com

AS-i is a simple solution for networking actuators and sensorsAn AS-interface network offers a simple, cost-efficientalternative to conventional cabling at the lowest level of theautomation. This network can operate directly in conjunctionwith an existing PLC or can be linked to a higher-level bussystem for low-cost remote I/O.

AS-interface is tailored to the needs of devices such assensors and actuators where low connection cost per node is critical and simplicity is essential.

Global support for AS-interfaceifm engineers can help design and implement an AS-interfacenetwork on industrial equipment. On-site technical support isavailable and application assistance is immediate by callingour technical support hotline: 800-441-8246.

Aggressive product development ifm is committed to investing in new product developmentfor AS-interface. Our goal is to improve functionality, simplifyinstallation and maintain competitive price points.

Before

Point-to-point wiring is stillthe most common wiringmethod found in industry. One cable from each deviceresults in large wire bundlesrunning through the system.Due to the sheer volume ofwires, installation time isconsiderable and trouble-shooting is complex.

After

AS-i network connects multi-ple binary devices with onlyone 2-wire cable, completelyeliminating wire bundles. Itssimple, plug-and-play wiringsupports all topologies andeliminates device profiles andexpensive hardware.

Point-to-point wiring vs. AS-i networkingIndustrial automation systems require a large amount ofcontrol devices. The number of binary actuators and sen-sors placed on a typical system has grown over the years.

Current methods for wiring include point-to-pointconnection or bus systems. However, point-to-pointwiring results in large wire bundles, and bus systems canbe too complex for networking simple binary devices.

As a solution to these challenges, ifm offers the ActuatorSensor interface (AS-i), a simple network for actuatorsand sensors. AS-i is cost-effective, easy to install, andfeatures modular components that offer designflexibility. AS-i is a complete networking solution forindustrial control applications.

The AS-i network connects hundreds of sensors on a single two-wire cable. AS-iI/O modules use quick plug-and-play functionality that simplifies installation.

ifm is an AS-interface founding memberifm efector is one of 11 founding members of the

AS-Interface Association, established in 1990. AS-i is anon-profit independent organization that is currently

supported by more than 100 vendors worldwide.

72

Page 75: w w w .ifm .co m

Industrial Ethernet (IE) is commonly applied as the networking protocol for automationand plant control. IE is well known in industry, can carry large packets of data, and isideal for HMIs, PLCs, drives, and barcode scanners.

For bit-level data such as sensors and actuators – whichaccount for 90% of devices in automation – a lower levelI/O network, such as AS-i, is better suited for these devices.

AS-i offers a better alternative to wiring bit-level devicesand is an ideal complement to Industrial Ethernet at the I/Olevel. A single Ethernet IP address can transmit up to 992I/O points. AS-i uses quick plug-and-play functionality thatsimplifies installation in the controls architecture.

Actuator Sensor-interface overview

Extremely fast system Data transfer is fast – less than 10 ms on a fully-loaded system of 248inputs and 186 outputs.

Flexible topologyAS-i supports topologies including open tree, ring, star, and trunk anddrop lines to allow maximum design freedom.

Cost effectiveSince actuators and sensors are among the least expensive devices on a network, their connecting hardware should be comparable in price.AS-i’s price-per-point is one of the best in industry.

A simple 2-wire flat cableThe normal collection of wire bundles are replaced by a single, two-wireflat cable that carries both data and power.

Modular systemAS-i’s design flexibility makes it a true plug-and-play networking system.Modular machines can be easily connected with the aid of splittermodules to form a production line.

Insulation displacementInsulation displacement technology enables fast connection to alldevices. The cable is pierced to make the electric connection andfeatures a mechanical profile to proper insure polarity.

Best fitActuator and sensor manufacturers developed AS-i for the sole purposeof connecting actuators and sensors. Every component on the networkis specially designed to fit these binary devices.

Single or dual master options available for application versatility

User-friendly display for setup anddiagnostics

AS-i Backplane Masters provideconnection of AS-i to most PLCs

AS-i can be connected to existing control platforms in two different ways:

Controls and gateway connectionIn many cases, a high level bus system is installed in the plant. These bus systemsare designed for complex controls equipment such as drives, bar code scanners, etc. These networks are not optimized for simple on/off devices, such as sensors. Therefore, an easy way to apply an AS-i network is via a gateway connection. The gateway becomes a node on the higher level bus and allows the connection of sensors and actuators at a competitive price point.

ifm's AS-i Controller-E is designed for DeviceNet and Ethernet IP networks. TheSmartLink DP is available for Profibus networks. All of ifm's controllers incorporateuser-friendly displays for setup and diagnostics and fast response of up to 992digital I/O points using version 3.0.

Backplane master connectionBackplane masters are designed to fit into a standard card slot in a PLC rack. ifm'sbackplane masters are available with single or dual master options. The dual masteris capable of communicating with 992 digital I/O points. Inputs and outputs aremapped directly to the I/O tables in the plc and programmed via the standard plcsoftware. No additional software is required.

Power for the yellow AS-i cableAS-i power supplies supply all devices connected to the yellow AS-icable. These are usually modules, connected sensors and intelligent actu-ators. They provide an increased voltage of approximately 30 volts whichis converted by the modules into 24 V required for input devices.

In order to ensure the decoupling between AS-i data and the supply, only approved AS-i power supplies may be used. AS-i is an unshieldedbus system that transports data and supplies energy on the same pair ofconductors. Because the AS-i network is an unshielded system, the volt-age must not be grounded for reasons of symmetry.

Standard 24 V power supplies cannot be used instead of AS-i powersupplies for network power.

efector Octavis systems monitor operating conditions of food andbeverage processing equipmentifm’s vibration monitors provide specific vibration monitoring oncomponents inside food processing equipment such as rolling elementbearings, rotational unbalances, and gear drive systems.

The system’s on-board microprocessor directly calculates the machine’svibration characteristics and compares them to the allowable limits. When the vibration levels exceed the allowable limits, the system automatically sets alarm outputs or transfers the data over an Ethernet network connection.

Innovative softwareifm’s Octavis software makes implementing acontinuous vibration monitoring solution easy.Programming is straightforward using the “wizard“guided configuration software. Analysis tools included in the programming software give users the ability to remotelyevaluate the machine’scondition. A bar graph displayprovides a quick overview of theentire machine’s operating con-ditions. The spectrum frequencyplots allow for comprehensiveanalysis, and the trend historychart plotter displays machinecondition changes over time.

Compact vibration sensors detect changing conditions of food processingmachinery to indicate machine damageIn most food plants, every piece of equipment has its own vibration level that canchange when it experiences unusual operating conditions. These changes canindicate potential machine damage or failure.

The VK Series and VT Series vibration sensors are designed to permanently mounton a machine to continuously monitor the machine’s vibration level. By detecting vibration level changes when they first occur, these sensors can prevent food pro-cessing equipment from catastrophically failing, reduce secondary damage andeliminate expensive downtime.

The VK and VT sensors monitor vibration levels on:

• Motors• Pumps• Compressors• Fans • Centrifuges• Vibratory feeders

Compressed air and specialty gas meterefector Metris monitors compressed air and specialty gases such as argon (Ar),carbon dioxide (CO2), and nitrogen (N2) to detect leakage areas and improve energyefficiencies. Compressed gases are considered one of the most expensive sources of energy consumption in a plant. By identifying leakage areas, efector Metris can optimize compressed gas usage, improve system performance, and reduceenergy costs.

The compact sensor is fitted with an integrated pipe to ensure easy mounting andproper installation depth. The sensor’s 4-digit numeric display provides air and gasconsumption readings and features microprocessor-based pushbutton setup. Threedisplay options are available: cubic feet per minute, cubic feet per hour, and totalconsumed cubic feet. The 24 VDC unit provides switching, analog and pulse outputoptions.

Operating principleefector Metris incorporates two ceramic sensingelements that each contain a thermistor.

As one sensor element is heated, the second element isused as a reference. Power is then altered to the heaterto ensure a constant temperature difference (CTD)between the two elements.
