Translations, Texts, & Program NotesEthereal in essence, Lux Aeterna is the quintessential piece for treble voices, emphasizing the angelic qualities of a female choir. Through a melody that enchants and evocative dissonances, Roueché elicits a sense of light eternal, a literal translation of this title. Employing a Latin text that implores God to shine his light upon his people, and “grant them eternal rest,” the music successfully transports the listener to a place of serenity and hope. The harmonic structure and movement between the di#erent voices and a soprano solo at the end featuring a poignant dissonance illustrate the idea that while there will be darkness in life, light will always triumph. A section of voices singing randomly represents all the saints in heaven. This beautiful prayer and its setting stretches the realm of imagination while inspiring musicians and audiences alike.

Lux aeterna luceat eis, Domine, Let eternal light shine on them, Lord, cum sanctis tuis in aeternum, as with Your saints in eternity, quia pius es. because you are merciful.Requiem aeternum dona eis, Grant them eternal rest, Lord, Domine et Lux perpetua luceat eis And let perpetual light shine on them, cum Sanctus tuis in aeternam as with your saints in eternity, quia pius est. because you are merciful.

Latvian born composer and violinist Imant Raminsh is widely acclaimed for his choral music. His approach is fundamentally traditional and tonal, and based upon a !ne sense of vocal melody. His 1989 Missa Brevis draws on the most deeply traditional Christian texts — the “Ordinary” texts of the Latin Mass. (Though the term Missa Brevis or “short Mass” has many meanings, here it refers to the fact that Raminsh omits the long Credo movement.) The opening Kyrie eleison begins in a solemn mood appropriate to this supplicative text. The central prayer, Christe eleison, is given to a lyrical soprano solo, before a varied reprise of the opening music overlaid with the soprano’s line. Gloria in excelsis Deo is a more complex text, and Raminsh is again sensitive to the character and meaning of the text.

There is a long, more solemn middle section, led by the soprano — beginning with the fervent solo at Qui tollis peccata mundi — and ending appropriately exultant. The Sanctus begins in a brilliant style, leading to a lively, dancelike Hosanna in excelsis. The soprano carries the passionate Benedictus qui venit before a reprise of the Hosanna music. The !nal movement, Agnus Dei, opens with the same solemn music that opened the Kyrie, worked into a profound meditation on the final words, Dona nobis pacem — a prayer for peace.

O Magnum Mysterium, a brief but powerful piece, was written for a small church choir directed by Antognini’s wife. It was meant as a gi$ for the good people who came once a week to prepare Christmas songs. The piece was received with such enthusiasm that Antognini decided to show it to other choirs, and the celebrated Vancouver Chamber Choir agreed to perform the world premiere of the piece in October 2011.

The piece is divided into three parts: The !rst, in a major key, features four voices that combine, follow, and chase one another to announce the great mystery of the birth of Christ. The second part, in a minor key, has a darker, melancholy color that introduces us to the third, conclusive section. The !nal Alleluja has a triumphant and luminous character, but the brief coda brings us back into a more intimate and tranquil climate.

O magnum mysterium, O great mystery,et admirabile sacramentum, and wonderful sacrament,ut animalia viderent Dominum that animals should see the natum, new-born Lord, jacentem in praesepio! lying in a manger!Beata Virgo, cujus viscera Blessed is the Virgin whose wombmeruerunt portare was worthy to bear,Dominum Christum. Christ the Lord.Alleluia! Alleluia!

Ave Maris Stella (Latin, “Hail Star of the Sea”) is a popular plainsong Vespers hymn to Mary. Although the origin is unknown, it has been attributed to several people, including Bernard of Clairvaux (12th century), Saint Venantius Fortunatus (6th century) and Hermannus Contractus (11th century). It was especially popular in the Middle Ages and has been used by many composers as the basis of other compositions. The text is found in 9th-century manuscripts and in ancient codices of the Divine O"ce for Vespers on Marian feasts. Today it is still in use in the Divine O"ce and in the Little O"ce of the Blessed Virgin. The melody is found in the Irish plainsong in praise of St. Bridget, Gabhaim Molta Bríde. The popular modern hymn Hail Queen of Heaven, the Ocean Star, is loosely based on this plainsong original. The light of the Mother shines in this setting by Ivo Antognini, who uses string-like lines and cluster chords to create a glow of sound around Mary.

Flare was commissioned by the 2012 American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) Women’s Choir Repertoire Standards Commissioning Consortium. WomenSing was one of the commissioning choirs. Dale Trumbore was a winner of the WomenSing Youth Inspiring Youth competition  in 2012.

“In choosing this poem to set, I was particularly struck by the last line: ‘big brother, I am catching up to you.’ The entire piece drives toward this moment—one long, rhythmic race—as the phrase ‘I am running’ returns at various points, serving as a refrain and urging the music forward.”

—Dale TrumboreWait.

Through trees With bursting limbs I am running.

Ablend with bark, A mute blaze. My eye’s blue stain on the greenI am running towards the stream. Past names scratched, last summer’s lean-to, the ravine bridged by a held breath -- I am running toward the game, toward the arm. The birds cutthroat in the clearing I am running towardthe twist. Running toward the same as away. Toward the twist- arm game by the stream. My eye’s blue, running Under canopy, I’m nothing. Feet between deer tracks, I’m vanishing. A burst, held breath, and over anthill, say graceWait. Bright 'ash, Big brother, I am Catching up to you. — Stacy Gnall, 2011

Hotaru Koi, a song for !re'y-catching, most likely dates to the Japanese Edo period. At that time, people, regardless of age and gender, o$en went to a ridge between rice !elds or the bank of a stream to catch !re'ies. The Japanese people retain their ancient a"nity for !re'ies to this day.

Come over here, !re'y, where the water is sweet. The water over there is bitter; take the mountain road.

No wonder his tail sparkles so brightly, his father is rich!

In the a$ernoon, the !re'ies hide in the grass; at night, their tails light up like lanterns.

Don’t go too high up in the sky, though, you might be eaten! Come see the brightness of their lanterns.

Kathleen Rodde’s adaptation for treble voices of the traditional spiritual, This Little Light of Mine, originally arranged by Moses Hogan, was premiered at this year’s ACDA convention. WomenSing began working on it before the publication was o"cially released to the public in late September.

O lucidissima is the middle movement and O nobilissima the !nal movement of Lux Lucis, a collection of three motets for women’s voices, based on texts by Hildegard von Bingen. The three movements may be performed as a set, or individually. In addition to this version for women’s choir, there is a version for six solo voices.

O most luminous band of apostles, Arising in true knowledge And opening the enclosure of the devil’s teaching, Washing his captives in a font of living water: You are the most radiant light in the blackest darkness. You are a mighty row of pillars Supporting the Lamb’s bride in all her beauty. Through his joy, she is mother and standard-bearing virgin. For the immaculate Lamb is the bridegroom of his immaculate bride.

O nobilissima virditas, Que radicas in sole Et que in candida serenitate luces in rota Quam nulla terrena lentia comprehendit: Tu circumdata es amplexibus divinorum ministeriorum. Tu rubes ut aurora et ardes ut solis 'amma.

O most noble greenness, You are rooted in the sun, And you shine in bright serenity in a sphere No earthly eminence can comprehend. You are enfolded in the embraces of divine ministries. You blush like the dawn and burn like a 'ame of the sun.

Our Mission: To create a vibrant choral experience that transforms and enlightens both singers and audience through exploration of the traditional and the unexpected in women’s choral literature.Since 1965, the vibrant and beautifully blended sound of WomenSing has engaged and delighted audiences in the Bay Area and beyond.

The Since 1965, the vibrant and beautifully blended sound of WomenSing has engaged and delighted audiences in the Bay Area and beyond.

The award-winning group’s reputation for excellence draws members from the entire San Francisco Bay Area. WomenSing concerts include both the traditional and the unexpected, historical masterpieces, new music, commissions from nationally recognized composers, and familiar music from all eras. WomenSing has enjoyed rewarding collaborations with major performing groups such as San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus, Jubilate Orchestra, California Shakespeare Theatre, Dimensions Dance Theater of Oakland, Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choirs, Contra Costa Children’s Chorus, and the !nest Bay Area musicians. WomenSing has performed throughout Europe, Asia, Latin and South America, Canada, and the United States.

In 2008, WomenSing established its musical outreach program Youth Inspiring Youth. Two competition winners are commissioned each year to write treble choral works setting award-winning children’s poetry from the River of Words project, which engages youth with nature through art and poetry as part of the Center for Environmental Literacy at St. Mary’s College in Moraga, California. Nationally recognized composer Libby Larsen mentors the young composers. During its May 2011 Washington, DC, tour, WS performed YIY pieces in collaboration with the Peabody Children’s Chorus at a concert presented by the Library of Congress Center for the Book.

Due in part to the success of the YIY project, WomenSing is attracting attention both nationally and locally. National recognition includes partial funding from MetLife Meet the Composer and the 2010 Chorus America/ASCAP Alice Parker Award for adventurous programming. WomenSing was awarded the 2011 Contra Costa County Arts Commission Award for Excellence, and a grant from the Lafayette Community Foundation. In June 2011, WomenSing was selected as one of six Bay Area choruses to perform during the Chorus America 2011 annual convention held in San Francisco. In July 2013, WomenSing joined choirs from across the globe at the Missoula, Montana, International Choral Festival, an invitation-only honor.

In April, 2014, Womensing will present the inaugeral edition of Treble Voices Now (TVN), a biennial Bay Area new music festival for upper-voiced choirs.

The concept for TVN builds on the workshop and performance process that has proved so successful in WomenSing’s Youth Inspiring Youth — Commissioning Emerging Composers project. Invited choirs will have the opportunity to learn !rsthand about the process of creating and re!ning a new choral piece and participate in individual clinics on their own innovative repertoire.

Each clinic will be led by guest clinician Cristian Grases and maestro Martin Benvenuto, joined by our two 2013-2014 YIY winners. The festival concludes with a Saturday a$ernoon concert by the assembled groups, showcasing their own new work and highlighting a preview of the two new YIY compositions.
