PPG Researcher Wins 2007 Shades of Green Award PPG Performance GlazinGs

mike Rupert, Director of Technical Services and Product Development

for PPG’s Performance Glazings unit, was awarded the Green Building Alliance (GBA) 2007 Shades of Green Leadership Award in the business category this past March. The GBA is a nonprofit organization that works to transform the building industry by advancing resource-efficient, healthy, and high-performing buildings throughout

Pennsylvania.Rupert

worked with PPG scientists, technicians, and engineers to create Solarban®

70XL, a glass that bounces away the sun’s heat to keep a building cool, while admitting light. The development of the glass took three years and transmits 63% of the sun’s light while blocking 73% of its heat. One test concluded that in a glass-walled, eight-story office building, Solarban 70XL could cut annual energy costs by 6.6%, or about $40,000. The glass is installed in the special events pavilion at the Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens in Pittsburgh, and is planned for inclusion in approximately 130 buildings now under construction.<

PPG Sungate Windshields Improve Vehicle Fuel EfficiencyPPG automotive oem Glass

PPG’s Sungate® Infrared (IR) reflective windshield is helping automotive

manufacturers increase fuel efficiency up to 4 percent, which could net car owners substantial savings in annual fuel costs. Sungate windshields reflect about 50% of the sun’s infrared energy, which keeps vehicles cooler and reduces air conditioning use approximately 20%. “The Sungate IR-reflective windshield reduces the initial workload on a vehicle’s air conditioning system, which represents the biggest use of power for climate control in a vehicle. Because the air conditioner doesn’t have to work as hard, fuel efficiency increases and emissions are reduced,” said Mukesh Rustagi, Global Product Manager for PPG Automotive OEM Glass. “Sungate windshields are good for the environment, for consumers’ pocketbooks, and for automakers trying to satisfy consumers’ preferences. This is another example of how PPG is taking a leadership position in helping automakers create more environmentally-efficient vehicles.”<

PPG Creates Brilliant Ink Colors and Every One is “Green”PPG industrial coatinGs

PPG has developed the most colorful inks available to the glassware

and ceramics industry—and every one is “green.” Available in a rainbow of bright, bold hues, EcoBrite® Organic Inks are created from a proprietary, patented epoxy-based formula that has no toxic heavy metals, making possible brighter designs in almost any shade. Designers who create bottles, containers, tumblers, and ceramic mugs are creating new designs in a spectacular spectrum of shades, even in fluorescent and phosphorescent colors and metallic

silvers and golds. EcoBrite inks have excellent flow to provide a high-definition print image, excellent gloss, and brilliant color clarity. They require less energy for application, and less material to achieve the same aesthetics as compared with ceramic ink systems. According to Terry Hart, PPG’s New Ventures manager, “They are easy on glass, easy on energy, and easy on the eyes. All of that makes them

easy on the bottom line. Glassware and ceramics

manufacturers are benefiting greatly from EcoBrite ink’s unique

performance advantages.”< PPG Industries and

Devold AMT have signed an agreement

to form a 50-50 joint venture to manufacture fiber glass reinforcement fabrics used in turbine blades for the North American wind energy market. Devold AMT is a manufacturer of glass, carbon, and aramid (heat-resistant synthetic polyamide material) fiber

reinforcements for the automotive, aerospace, marine, construction,

mass transit, and electronics markets, with headquarters based in Norway. The joint venture will create stitched reinforcement fiber glass production lines and generate new jobs at PPG’s wholly-owned fiber glass plant in Shelby, North Carolina.

“This joint venture will strengthen PPG’s position as a major supplier of high-quality fiber glass products to the wind energy market,” said Victoria Holt, PPG Senior Vice President, Glass and Fiber Glass. “It also shows how PPG is finding new ways to develop alternative energy sources.”<

In today’s collision repair arena it’s as competitive as any professional sports event. One way to get a leg up on the shop down the street and gain a winning advantage is nurturing partnerships with companies in the industry that can synergize with your business and add value and expertise. In contrast to continually chasing down

the next best deal from vendors (which can breed disruptive, inefficient results), there’s plenty of empirical evidence that shows long-term partnerships between compatible companies provide better, more productive solutions for their respective customers. Some benefits that immediately come to mind are an increased understanding of customer needs, the ability to share resources, and the opportunity to gain fresh insights and new perspectives of the collision repair business. This issue of the Repaint Reporter covers several examples of the successes that can be achieved by partnering with PPG Refinish. And perhaps there’s no better case in point than the PPG-Penske relationship that spans four decades. With the coming of each new year, this collaborative effort opens up new, win-win opportunities for our respective companies. The level of trust that builds with a successful partnership also has its rewards. Take Keyes Collision as an example. As a shop known for its leading-edge approach to collision repair, Keyes management collaborated heavily with the PPG team in its decision to become one of the first shops in North America to make the move to waterborne technology. Additionally, PPG’s global resources came into play and enabled Keyes management to study successful waterborne systems in use across Europe. The “Big Rig Build-Off” (see page 20) and PPG’s custom painted show truck—both spawned from PPG’s strategic alliance with Jones Performance—are further illustrations of the mutual benefits that accrue from the partnership approach. PPG’s strong relationship with our single-line Platinum Distributors is perhaps the best example of how partnership collaboration leads to a better understanding of the customer’s needs. Taking advantage of input from our distributors has been the driving force behind many of the advances we’ve made in products and services over the past several years. Forming a partnership alliance can be formal, with a signed contract, or an informal commitment. Either way, there’s no doubt that the right partnership between two compatible companies can add value and create strong competitive advantages in the refinish marketplace.

Back in the late 1950’s when Roger Penske was winning races as a race car driver, little did he know he had placed himself on a fast track to business success.

Now, after a racing career marked by a wealth of checkered flags, it’s easy to see it was almost inevitable Penske would wind up where he is: the head of an international transportation services entity dedicated to performance and excellence in every aspect of its business.

As chairman of Penske Corporation, Penske leads a global organization recognized for its operating expertise. The company and its subsidiaries employ more than 38,000 people in 1,700 locations with annual revenues that top $17 billion. That’s a long way from a race track’s twists and turns.

Penske Corporation includes Penske Motor Group, Penske Truck Leasing, Penske Automotive Group, Penske Performance and several other components. Each of these companies on their own could be

the subject of a how-to-succeed-in-business textbook.

Penske Automotive Group is the second-largest auto retailer in the U.S. You’ll find it on the Fortune 500 and Russell 1000 lists. It owns 311 dealerships—164 in the U.S. and 147 outside the U.S., primarily in the United Kingdom—selling 41 brands, has 26 collision repair centers, 15,000 employees and services 2 million vehicles yearly.

Penske Truck Leasing sends out its trucks, 210,000 of them, from 1,000 locations around the world. Its 20,000 employees provide services ranging from leasing, fleet management and rental to warehousing and supply chain management.

The Penske Motor Group is a specialty auto retailer operating six dealerships in California. One of them—Longo Toyota—is the largest U.S. dealership, selling 30,000 new and used vehicles annually.

And, of course, there’s Penske Performance which operates Penske Racing, Inc., Penske Racing South, Inc. and Penske Motorsports, some of the most successful teams in the history of professional sports.

It makes for a fine family of businesses.

As chairman of PenskeCorporation, RogerPenske heads a globalenterprise that’s well known for its winningperformance andoperating expertise.

The not-so-secret Penske formula: performance + excellence = success

Take a close look and you’ll find a common thread running through every Penske enterprise: motor-sports and all its nuances. Penske has taken what he learned in his racing career—in which he was named Sports Illustrated SCCA Driver of the Year in 1961 and The New York Times Driver of the Year in 1963—and used it in business.

Says Penske, “We applied what it takes to be successful in the very competitive world of professional motorsports and used those principles to create the basis of how we operate each of our business

entities.” As he sees it, the keys to his companies’ success are: • Providing leadership • Fostering team work • Choosing the right partners • Developing a sense of urgency

(“they will not move the start of the Daytona 500 if we are not prepared”)

• Paying attention to details • Maintaining a customer focus • Communicating throughout the

organization • Continually improving processes

and procedures • Not being afraid to change

And doing it all within the rules because “honesty and integrity are everything.”

Echoes Walter Czarnecki, Executive Vice President, Penske Corporation, “Look at our history. We started with one dealership and a few truck leasing places. Motorsports is a small part of our overall revenue, but it’s the face of our company. Our heart is never far from it. Our success in that area is what’s allowed us success in other areas.”

Penske Performance is the epitome of that success. The team operates out of a brand-new facility in Mooresville, North Carolina and participates in the Indy Racing League, American Le Mans Series and NASCAR’s Nextel Cup and Busch Series. Over the years they’ve racked up 292 major race wins, 344 pole positions, 14 Indy 500 victories and 21 national championships. No one else comes close.

Underneath it all—solid relationships

To make the “keys” work, Penske cultivates loyal relationships, both internally and externally.

Wally McCarty, Penske Racing Marketing Director, states, “Roger and Walt have always put people first. Our biggest success is the development of people—giving them the opportunity to perform, giving them responsibility. It’s a big priority here. We have an entrepreneurial philosophy and we support our people.”

McCarty adds that Penske commands respect through leading by example. “Roger wouldn’t ask anyone to do anything he wouldn’t do—pick up litter, direct traffic, roll up the sleeves and get to work. That’s the nature of this company.”

External relationships are also vital. Penske Corporation has a

reputation for maintaining long-term associations with industry leaders. They’ve been working with PPG for 28 years, a relationship that began in the late 1970s when PPG was a Penske Truck Leasing customer. At the time, Penske Racing was competing in the CART World Series. Relationships with PPG management were developed early on through introductory meetings at the race track between Penske, Czarnecki, Dan Luginbuhl and PPG staff. Penske convinced PPG to become the racing series title sponsor. From that initial contact, the two companies developed

mutually beneficial ways to work together. Some of the early opportunities included PPG providing paint for Penske’s race cars and the Penske Truck Leasing division.

That connection has grown. PPG is now Penske’s largest paint supplier for its racing, truck leasing and collision repair units. PPG even provided the architectural paint for Penske’s racing headquarters and is a team racing sponsor.

“Great partners like PPG have helped make us the way we are,” Czarnecki says. “We’re involved with PPG because of their culture—they offer great products at competitive prices and over the years they’ve done everything they said they’d do whether it’s racing, paint for the collision shop or our truck fleets. We can count on them.”

Adds McCarty, “I inherited the PPG sponsorship 22 years ago when I arrived at Penske. It’s a

continuing pleasure to work with them.”

Penske’s relationships extend beyond business. He has applied his skills to civic activity in Metropolitan Detroit and is known as a man who “gets the job done.” His leadership was critical in the success of the 2006 NFL Super Bowl XL in Detroit and the resurrection of this summer’s Detroit Belle Isle Grand Prix.

There seems to be a bit of a Midas factor in everything Penske touches. In fact, it’s Penske’s racing ethic and competitive nature that’s taken him and his companies to the top. We’re glad to see it’s working.<

Darrell Mayabb’s story is pretty straight-

forward: he loves cars, loves rock and roll and

loves art. Put those elements together, throw

in a whole lot of talent, and you come up

with an incredible success story that’s got to

make you smile.

That combination has taken Mayabb from humble school days in Dayton, Ohio to the beautiful Colorado mountain country where he works in a barn he’s converted into a studio. It’s also taken him to the top of his field as one of America’s foremost illustrators of hot rod art and designs and placed him in the National Rod and Custom Car Hall of Fame.

Mayabb’s work is red hot, in demand by car magazines, racers and hot rod aficionados around the world. In fact, he’s the artist responsible for the 2007 PPG calendar—one of the most popular car calendars in years.

Mayabb grew up listening to rock and roll and pouring over the car magazines of the 1950s. Every month while in high school, he’d go to the local newsstand to pick up the latest copy of Hot Rod, Car Craft, Rod & Custom and whatever other mags were available, and promptly fall in love with the hot rods pictured.

He enjoyed drawing as early as grade school. His art teachers encouraged him, but in his blue-collar upbringing—art was only a hobby and a “real job” was what you needed to make your way in the world. When he was 15, his father died and Mayabb worked in a grocery store to help out his family while doing T-shirt designs and pin striping cars in his spare time. After high school, Mayabb headed off to art school, the Central Academy of Art in Cincinnati.

The school, as Mayabb tells it, “took you in and taught you what you needed to do to get a job in commercial art.” He wanted to be an illustrator, but the school thought they knew better and told him he would be a designer. He graduated at the top of his class. He went to Los Angeles where he worked as an illustrator at North American Aviation, S&ID on the NASA Apollo project. Mayabb

SHoP conSiderS innovation “BuSineSS aS uSual”

California is known for being on the cutting

edge of the latest trends, and the collision

repair industry is no exception.

So if you want to know what’s

coming, what’s hip, what’s new,

look west—and in particular,

look at west coast body shop

leaders such as Keyes Collision.

“Our goal is to go beyond state-of-the-

art,” says Robert Bumpus, Director of Keyes

Collision. “We want our shop to be futuristic

in terms of our approach to processes and

productivity.”

then went back to Dayton to an advertising art studio. He married Sharon, his wife of 40 years. The couple then moved to Miami and eventually to Colorado in 1968, where they’ve been ever since.

Early on, Mayabb was influenced by the big names of hot rod design—Big Daddy Ed Roth (a.k.a. “Rat Fink”) and Tom Medley (creator of hot-rodder cartoon character “Stroker

McGurk”)—as he developed his own unique style.

As a self-described high school “greaser” and “rock ‘n’ roller,” Mayabb had an unabashed love of cars. He’s had quite a collection over the years including the blue tri-powered 1961 Pontiac Catalina he drove to California, the Triumph TR-3 that got him into racing, a bright yellow ’40 Ford Sedan

Delivery and an Anglia Thames Panel—he has a thing for sedan delivery vehicles—to name a few. He’s done an illustration of every car he’s ever owned.

Music has also influenced his work. Like many old-time rock ‘n’ rollers, Mayabb ties songs to events in his life. To this day, he remembers finishing a pin stripe job at a neighboring high school, and while driving back to his school, heard his first Buddy Holly song—“That’ll be the day.” Right then he was hooked on Holly and still mourns his loss.

Little by little, Mayabb built up his portfolio and his following, eventually working for the magazines he read as a teenager. “I have worked for the automotive magazines that matter most to me. Doing art for the hot rod magazines, Rod & Custom, Hot Rod, Street Rodder, American Rodder, Hop Up, Rodder’s Journal, and NSRA is one of the highlights of my career,” he says. And the industry appreciates him, too: in 1999 they presented him with the “Stroker McGurk” Award for outstanding work.

In 1996, PPG regional representative and major hot-rodder Woody Green connected Mayabb with PPG to generate ideas to attract people to the company’s booth at the National Street Rod Association

shows. Mayabb responded with some drawings that brought in the fans. It’s been a tight relationship ever since, with PPG reps, including CTM Andy Ganderton, commissioning Mayabb for a number of projects, some even targeted at kids to teach them about art, color and design. Mayabb illustrated the popular 2007 PPG calendar and is already hard at work on the 2008 version.

Mayabb has also done what he calls “sketchpads” concept cars for a number of magazines. Six of his designs have been produced, including a ’41 Chevy Cabover for PPG. He’s also designed a hot rod for NASCAR race team owner Joe Gibbs and did a portrait of Dale Earnhardt and his father for Chevrolet.

Right now, Mayabb is helping out his son, a film direction student at Art Center School of Design in Pasadena, California, by illustrating his story boards. Does that mean a major shift in Mayabb’s career away from cars? “No, no, no,” he insists. “I love helping my son, but I love the hot rods and that’s why I love doing what I do. I won’t give that up.”

We certainly hope not.<

minutes as opposed to 15 using the previous system.

The result? “Fewer coats, fast dry times, nice lay down, good adhesion, and minimal overspray and cleaning requirements,” says Keyes painter, Daniel Quezada, who attended the PPG training program on the system prior to implementing it. “Daniel came back from that training session and couldn’t wait to start spraying the Aquabase Plus product,” says Bumpus. “He was chomping at the bit to get started.”

What will be next at Keyes? For now, Bumpus seems satisfied with the systems that are in place. But one thing is certain: it won’t be long until he’s implementing the next new trend, and the rest of the world will be watching and learning.<

Driving the need to be proactive is the fact that Keyes serves a clientele with extremely high standards. Keyes, located in the affluent Los Angeles suburb of Van Nuys, is affiliated with Keyes Automotive Group which specializes in luxury and niche auto brands such as Mercedes, Lexus, Audi, and

Maybach.In order to

satisfy these vehicle owners’ needs for top-end quality and prompt turnaround times, Keyes pays close attention to

both the products and processes used in its 68-person repair center.

For example, taking a cue from Henry Ford, Keyes utilizes an assembly line-style process with each member of its team playing a specialized role. Cars are disassembled and reassembled by apprentice technicians. Parts which require blending are removed and painted separately; then, they are placed on racks which go through the booth just ahead of the vehicle body. Using this model,

Keyes is able to achieve impressive throughput levels. With just two bodywork specialists and two painters, they completed 248 vehicles during a recent month; their average being around a dozen vehicles per day.

Maintaining such an aggressive pace may sound daunting, but over time, Keyes employees would agree that it becomes “business as usual.” Technicians there have the same attitude about the company’s visual vehicle status indicator system, which is used to emphasize the importance of maintaining throughput times. Here’s how the system works:

When a vehicle enters a stall, it is time-stamped. A visual indicator connected to a radio frequency transmitter tracks the vehicle’s progress through the line, and lets the technician know when the allotted time for a particular process is nearly complete. For example, a two-hour process will begin with the car symbol (which is displayed on large screens throughout the shop) entering the stall at 10:00 a.m. At 11:45 a.m., the car’s symbol changes to yellow, and at noon, it switches over to red. This straightforward strategy helps keep workflow on track, and lets everyone know if the schedule is in jeopardy.

The Keyes productivity model has been an example for others in the industry, and the company has willingly shared its success strategies with repair centers that want to improve certain aspects of their business. Even automakers such as Toyota have featured the Keyes Collision Center model in their “best practices” information.

Just as it is constantly fine tuning its repair model, Keyes is also constantly evaluating its paint system. Currently, Keyes is utilizing Aquabase® Plus, Nexa Autocolor’s VOC-compliant basecoat system from PPG. Although a change in paint systems was precipitated, in part, by air quality regulations, it’s likely that Keyes would have made the transition anyway. That’s because Keyes is constantly evaluating ways to

boost productivity while maintaining high quality and consistency levels. Prior to implementing the new system, Bumpus gave careful consideration to its ability to integrate into the Keyes high productivity requirements. “It seemed to be faster,” says Bumpus, “and if we can paint one or two more cars per day, well, that’s a pretty good system.”

To facilitate the transition, Keyes consulted with another industry

leader—2007 PPG Platinum Distributor of the Year Glenn Martin of Martin Auto Color, Van Nuys. Together they decided on necessary modifications to shop equipment. Further impacting productivity, decisions were made to purchase new spray guns and a new spray gun washing system. The shop’s downdraft booths were retrofitted with four ceiling fans each, making an air dry finish possible in just five

“Rock Bottom,” a one-of-a-kind custom truck created by the team at S & J Truck Sales in Ft. Wayne, Indiana was crowned winner of the Stars & Stripes Big Rig Build-Off. The truck beauty contest took place at the Mid-America Trucking Show held this spring at the Kentucky Exposition Center in Louisville. Modeled after a 1950’s style low-rider, lead designer and project manager Michael Raines named the creation “Rock Bottom” because it is so low to the ground...and even though the truck bears that name, it was a hands-down winner!

The Big Rig Build-Off is a special annual event showcasing unique talents in the fleet refinish market. The event was initiated by Jones Performance, Inc., a manufacturer of fiberglass truck

hoods and custom components in West Middlesex, Pennsylvania, who offer design consulting and fabrication services to the teams

competing in the contest. The competition pits custom truck builders against one another to create the ultimate big rig.

And when it came to paint, Jones Performance looked to PPG to help with the large-scale custom creations!

This year’s fantastic hand-built winning truck needed a fantastic finish, so S&J owner Jim Raines chose PPG’s Omaha Sunset Orange and modified the formula to create a spectacular custom color using the Delfleet® Evolution system from PPG Commercial Coatings. “The unique design and eye-popping color combined to make our truck a winner,” Raines said. “Although the competition was stiff, the “WOW” factor of the finished truck helped it take the first prize.” S & J competed

against four North American truck builders, who participated in this 3rd annual, invitation-only contest.

“Rock Bottom” was built for Tom Abrams, President of Reliable Carriers, Inc. (headquartered in Canton, Michigan), the largest specialized car transportation company in the country. The company boasts a fleet of over 400 trucks that transport concept and custom cars to car shows and racing events. “Rock Bottom” was customized to serve as a hauler for Abrams’ offshore racing boats that compete in the Offshore Pro Series Gold Cup Races. The truck’s orange color was selected to match the team’s colors.

Attendees at the Mid-America Trucking Show determined the Big Rig Build-Off winner, voting electronically by swiping their name badges through a card reader. “To achieve the championship award was unbelievable,” said Jim Raines. “Winning the award based on popular vote made it an even more rewarding achievement.” Don’t miss next year’s Stars & Stripes Big Rig Build-Off coming to Louisville, KY in March, 2008.<

PlatinumJust ask Glenn Martin.

The color of success:

With all the colors PPG offers, one stands out distinctly: platinum. especially when it means being named PPG Platinum

Distributor of the Year. This year the honor went to Martin Auto color of

Van Nuys, california. The award was presented by John leavy, Platinum director, at the annual PPG Platinum Distributor conference in orlando, florida.

for Glenn Martin, president and ceo of Martin Auto color, the award was a key moment in a long and rewarding relationship with PPG. overwhelmed with emotion, Martin beamed, “I was very excited for my company, our employees and for me. It’s the biggest honor we could get. I really appreciate the recognition.”

Martin’s relationship with PPG started 36 years ago when he poured his first pint of paint working at sturtevant Auto Parts while attending san fernando Valley state college. from that moment on, he was committed to PPG products. Not only did he like the paint, he also liked the people he worked with, the customers and the PPG representatives. so the rest, as they say, was history.

Martin and his crew did so well at sturtevant that—at the request of customers and PPG—they bought the business. They ran it until 1989 when they sold out intending to move on to other ventures. But sometimes moving on is not so easy, especially when long-time customers miss your high standards of customer service and attention. After a few years, and at the urging of previous customers and employees, Martin

and staff came back to reclaim the business and start a new organization: Martin Auto color.

As Martin describes it, the key people involved—Daryl fielder, lisa la laMacchia, fred

Gebert and rick Mathiesen—ran the business while he went out bringing in the capital to keep the place afloat. As the organization stabilized, he came back in and has been “hands on” for years, guiding the company’s growth and success and capitalizing on the products and services PPG offers.

Today, Martin Auto color employs more than 60 people in 12 stores stretching from southern california to the oregon border. In 2006, they recorded $19 million in sales. The company is primarily a collision specialist with some of california’s largest auto dealer groups as their customers. Martin has also ventured into other coatings areas with 20% of their business coming from fleet and commercial work.

Martin regularly travels to all the company’s locations and regards his employees as an extended family. That’s understandable since several of them have been with him from the start; three, in fact, for more than 30 years and many for over 20 years. says Martin, “we work very well together, know each other and know how to

address our customers’ needs.”When he’s not working, chances

are you’ll find Martin on the golf course. he’s also a racing fan. And as part of this year’s Platinum Distributor of the Year award, Martin Auto color earned the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to place their logo on the deck lid of the Penske racing #2 Kurt Busch race car. It will be a special NAscAr Nextel cup race weekend indeed for Martin Auto color as they celebrate their award.

As for working with PPG, Martin’s not shy about it: “They are the greatest corporate partner I could ever have. They have kept every promise they ever made, they put me through management courses, trained my people, made their products easy to sell. They work hard to be a terrific partner.”

he also is fully committed to the transition to waterborne paints. While dubious at first about california’s environmental restrictions, he’s now very much in the waterborne camp. “I’ve seen what Aquabase® Plus and Envirobase® High Performance can do. I know these PPG products won’t fail us.”

It’s that kind of loyalty that’s made Martin and PPG successful working together. It makes for a relationship that’s as solid as gold. or, in this case, platinum.<

Dave Jones is truly a man committed to performance. His fiberglass manufacturing facility in Middlesex, Pennsylvania, includes a 15,000 square foot state-of-the-art garage and 60-foot-long spray booth dedicated to research and development of fiberglass truck components.

Jones Performance, Inc. has manufactured fiberglass components

for trucks, motorcycles, racecars and even satellite dishes, and they have been using PPG finishes from the beginning.

Hap Jones, Dave’s father, began working with fiberglass in 1953.

A professional racecar driver, he competed in NASCAR races at Daytona Beach on the old 4.1-mile beach and road course before the construction of the Daytona International Speedway. In 1978, father and son decided to start their own company, and

Jones Performance Products, Inc., was born.

Dave began working with PPG finishes around 1973. Today, Jones Performance uses Delfleet® Evolution exclusively, and they couldn’t be happier. “I love the versatility of this paint,” Dave enthuses. “I’ve used other paints, and they just don’t have the flexibility of the PPG brands. They are especially well suited for applying graphics. Good graphics require a paint you can work with, and PPG products are very workable and shop friendly.”

The company has grown to

include a 120,000 square foot facility located on 12 acres of land. They manufacture replacement fiberglass hoods for all major heavy-duty OEM’s including Freightliner, Peterbilt, and Kenworth to name a few. Their products are available through OEM and independent dealerships all across the U.S., Canada, and Puerto Rico. Since 1978 they have fine-tuned their manufacturing processes, and in 1993 achieved ISO 9000 certification. Today, Jones produces 90 different fiberglass replacement

hoods, as well as a complete new product line of custom hoods called Truk-Rodz.

Dave came up with the idea for Truk-Rodz a few years ago. He realized his team was capable of doing much more than manufacturing standard fiberglass replacement hoods. “We know fiberglass truck hoods,” he said. “We’ve made more than 100,000 of them.” So he set his team on a mission to create the ultimate truck in form, fit, and function. As a result, they’ve taken the very best engineering and manufacturing processes and combined them to

create a new line of custom hoods called Truk-Rodz.

“Truck owners have told us over and over that they want something different,”

Dave said. “Until now, the only way to customize your hood was to cut into the structural integrity of the hood. A Truk-Rodz hood is designed and built from the ground up. If you have ideas about the design of your hood, we can make them a reality.”

“And Truk-Rodz is not just about hoods,” Jones continues. “Truk-Rodz originals focus on the complete truck to make it absolutely, positively one-of-a-kind. Drivers are passionate about their trucks. And we are every bit as passionate about transforming trucks into something that excites others as much as it does our customers.”

“PPG has played a significant role in our success,” Jones continues. “When we first came up with the concept of Truk-Rodz we turned to PPG for assistance with marketing. One example of their involvement is our co-sponsorship with PPG of the Big Rig Build-Off. PPG was instrumental in getting this program off the ground. As a result, this competition not only gives us

Puts Jones Performance in High Gearexposure, it helps drive innovation in the truck manufacturing arena, which is to everyone’s benefit.”

“I’m very impressed with the entire PPG organization, and have been for over 30 years,” Jones continues. “I truly consider PPG to be our partner.”<

nyone who’s attended a street rod, hot rod, or trade show event where PPG has exhibited has seen the fabulous PPG Show Truck. This year, a brand new 2007 Freightliner Coronado tractor is pulling the trailer,

painted in the same awesome design and colors as the previous cab. Because of their long-standing relationship with PPG, their expertise in customizing heavy-duty trucks, and their state-of-the-art paint shop facility, PPG turned to Jones Performance when it came time to paint the new Show Truck cab.

Specialists at Jones Performance tore down the new cab to prep it for painting, and then a team of PPG instructors began a 2-week marathon painting session at the Jones facility. “All the colors were created in Delfleet Evolution FBC and we were able to match every color,” said Jamie Redd, a PPG instructor and one of the team leaders.“ In some cases we added pearls and a little Vibrance Collection™ Liquid Metal, and Delfleet worked very well for us.” The team invested over 1,300 hours to finish in time for the truck to begin its journey across the United States, with 23 appearances scheduled in 19 states from March through November this year.

“Jones Performance has an outstanding facility and staff,” said Redd. “These guys have a real commitment to perfection. We could not have found a better place to paint the showpiece for PPG. The results are spectacular!”<

In addition to their local work, Carl’s Collision has featured cars at the 2006 SEMA show (also finished in Vibrance), and is currently working on vehicles for an international automobile magazine and another television show.<

It may seem paradoxical, but if you happen through the greater New York/New Jersey area and find yourself on the road next to a show-winning garbage truck, you would be sharing the pavement with one of the immaculately turned out rigs from Action Carting of Newark. Action custom paints its entire fleet of trash, roll-off, recycling and service trucks exclusively using PPG Delfleet ® Evolution products. Complemented by scores of running lights, highly-polished wheels and even pin striping, this fleet makes for a sharp presentation anywhere they work.

Action Carting takes great pride in preparing and maintaining a fleet of clean, custom-painted vehicles; they have even won “Best of Show” at the US Diesel Truckin’ Nationals. For eleven years now, PPG has teamed up with Street Rodder magazine on the PPG Street Rodder Road Tour car build. This year’s project centered around a throwback in history, focusing on a current interpretation of Tom McMullen’s seminal 1932 hot rod. The new Road Tour car was built by the crew from Leonard Lopez’ Dominator Street Rods in Brentwood, CA. While the original McMullen car was a roadster, today’s version of the classic is based on one of Brookville’s new ’32 Ford three-window coupe bodies. With Flathead power, Sid

When the car build was ready for paint, it went to Rick Valdez of Creative Images in Lodi, CA to prepare and finish the coupe in

the classic black of hot rod legend. Further perpetuating the legendary quality of this project, Art Himsl himself was called in to lay out the flames using his original templates from the restoration of the original late-50s McMullen highboy.

The color portion of the Road Tour car was based on PPG primer/surfacer NCT 280, after which block sanding prepared the body for a flawless black Deltron® DBU that finished glossy smooth. Rick then shot the yellow base and red finish for the Himsl flames, completing the transformation to instant classic.<

Fast Kids, Wild PaintJim Boitnott of Boitnott’s Custom Body, Paint and Accessories in Fairfield, Ohio is a paint and graphics master. With the help of his dedicated crew, Boitnott’s turns out some fantastic projects. The shop has been in business since 1991, working on hot rods, boats, race cars, motorcycles and nearly anything else that can take paint. Jim Zajbel, PPG Territory Manager and Smyth Automotive of Cincinnati are integral parts of the support system for Boitnott’s. With their paint booth and frame table, Boitnott also works select collision jobs into their busy schedule as part

of the CertifiedFirst® Network of repair centers, before spending time with family, racing on the weekends.

Boitnott’s uses the Vibrance CollectionTM and Deltron® lines from PPG. Jim has taken the striking Vibrance colors to task in creating intricate palettes to adorn the dragsters he runs with his two children, Samantha and Jacob. Samantha sports flames with cheetah spots and Jacob’s combination of flames and tribal patterns were their own ideas discussed with and created by Dad. The cheetah flame design was carefully laid out on the car and painted in a single layer to

avoid weight from overlap. The paintwork alone on this car took over 25 hours. Jacob’s green and orange car was painted in layers and was then finished with 11 coats of clear. Although fast on the weekends, Samantha and Jacob keep their grades up and are both honors students away from the track.<

While serving over 5,000 industrial and commercial accounts, 7 days a week and even 24 hours a day, Action handles all its own maintenance. The beautiful finish is important to company President John Glauda, and Pete Mansueto renders the finish that keeps Action’s trucks “at your disposal.”<
