RANDOM THOUGHTS DIFERENTES PENSAMIENTOS
from Father Bill Promesso
Volunteer Party We were rockin’ the house on Friday night at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Party! It’s so good to gather the people who make things happen to express gratitude and celebrate our shared mission to love and serve the Lord. I’m always impressed by the dedication shown by our volunteers in each area of parish life: worship/music, education/youth, service/outreach and stewardship/finance. The parish is blessed to have so many who give so much and for that I am deeply grateful. You rock! Worship Assistant On behalf of the whole parish I want to thank Brent Curry who has served as our worship assistant. Brent worked with our Directors of Music & Worship, the Worship Commission, and I for many years. He oversaw many of the background details of our liturgical life such as ordering supplies, scheduling and training ministers along with serving at funerals and weekend Masses. He made things run smoothly and for that I am extremely grateful. But all good things must end and Brent recently decided it was time to step away from this volunteer position to give more time to his family. Brent will still be here as an active parish member and Grand Knight of the Riverview Knights of Columbus. Please join me in thanking him for his exemplary service to God and Church. We Celebrate! Auxiliary Bishop Gerard Battersby will be with us next Saturday, February 10 at 5pm Mass to confer the
Wedding Anniversaries If you’re celebrating a milestone anniversary in 2018 (starting at 15 years together and going up in five year increments), let’s observe it together. Each year our parish honors your marriage covenant on the Sunday closest to Valentine’s Day. Join us at 11:00 Mass on Sunday, February 11 and enjoy wedding cake and punch afterward. Call the parish office with your names and date of marriage by Tuesday, February 6.
Sacrament of Confirmation on our 27 candidates. May God, who has begun this good work in them, bring it to fulfillment. The next day, Sunday February 11 at 11am Mass, we will honor those couples celebrating significant anniversaries in 2018. The bond of marriage has remained strong in good times and bad, sickness and health. It is truly right and just that we should celebrate this covenant of matrimony that withstands the test of time. We have many reasons to be thankful: Volunteers, Confirmation, Marriage and so much more. Alleluia!

Book Club The Book Club will meets at 7pm on the last Wednesday of the month. Our February book we will be reading Everybody’s Son by Thrity Umrigar. We will meet of discussion on Feb. 28 the last Wednesday of the Month.
The bestselling, critically acclaimed author of The Space Between Us and The World We Found deftly explores issues of race, class, privilege, and power and asks us to consider uncomfortable moral questions in this probing, ambitious, emotionally wrenching novel of two families—one black, one white.
Following in his adopted family’s footsteps, Anton, too, rises within the establishment. But when he discovers the truth about his life, his birth mother, and his adopted parents, this man of the law must come to terms with the moral complexities of crimes committed by the people he loves most.

Deacon Jim’s Journal Did you hear that Jesus was driving out demons? That’s right, demons. Kind of scary when you think about it. Demons living inside of people seems like some
sort of horror movie. When I turned my life around from living in the dark to a life in the light, the evil one fought back. The evil one shamed me and made me feel that I could never change and that I was no good. The evil one tormented me with images of my behavior and he reminded me of my sins even in my dreams. I felt as if I was slowly falling into a great darkness, one of depression. Random people came up to me and asked if I was O.K.? I felt O.K. but people saw I was not. Even my spiritual director was concerned that some sort of spirit was consuming me. This is what he recommended: “ Stop thinking about my problem, no matter what it is and start thinking about God instead. This is all you must do. It makes no difference what the problem is, what kind of health problem, work problem, family problem, financial problem. Work by rehearsing anything or everything that you know about God. God is Love, God is good, God is awesome. God is present everywhere; has infinite power; knows everything; and so on. It does not matter how well you may think you understand what I am telling you; just say the words repeatedly.” For me I had a spiritual song in my head which I sang to myself every time the spirit of worry and fear came over me. I sang quite a bit, both quietly and loudly. I can only say that I felt something leave me in time. Some sort of weight removed. Before I knew it God had somehow healed me and I catapulted into a new found joy. I can only say it worked.
May the Joy of Christ be with you!
Deacon Jim

Live Your Best LentLent – the annual 40-day journey for most of us typically begins with ashes on our foreheads, continues with eating fewer meals and more fish on Fridays, maybe giving something up or strengthening something in our lives, all culminating in participating in the Sacred Triduum – Holy Week services. Six weeks of physical self-discipline and/or self-improvement is an exemplary way to partially imitate Jesus’ 40 days in the wilderness.
But Jesus not only deprived his physical being, He also spent this time in prayer and spiritual reflection on His journey to Jerusalem. To make that spiritual journey with Him, i.e., live our best Lent, we too can do more to understand this gift of redemption a little deeper – travel the Lenten terrain Jesus traveled: the desert, a mountaintop, the Temple, the Upper Room, and a fateful borrowed tomb.
This year, as always during Advent and Lent, St. Cyprian is providing take-home formation material to help us with daily spiritual reflections, prayers, and actions. This year’s booklet, “The Path to Peace”, will be available in the gathering space next weekend after all Masses.
Pick up a copy and rely on it for 40 days to travel with Jesus from rural Galilee to Golgotha, feeling the
threats, betrayal, and abandonment He felt, so that this Easter Sunday is a true, glorious celebration overflowing with your own heart-felt, grateful alleluias!
And plan to participate in our other 2018 parish Lenten activities – the Lenten Sunday series and the Journey to Jerusalem. Do more this year to Live Your Best Lent Ever!

We are called to examine our consciences and admit our failings. The sacrament of Penance challenges us to examine our hearts inwardly and then express outwardly the ways we have failed to love God and neighbor—through both personal sin and social sin.

Stewardship Thoughts In today’s Scripture reading from the Book of Deuteronomy, Moses foretells of a prophet God will raise up from among the Israelites, from their own kin, saying, to him you shall listen. In St. Mark’s Gospel, Moses’ prophecy is echoed in Christ Jesus. It is the Messiah Who speaks, heals, and casts out evil spirits with authority in the synagogue at Capernaum. St. Paul encourages the Corinthian community to dedicate themselves entirely to the Lord. As Christian stewards, we not only acknowledge Christ as the Great Prophet, but also support the popes and others who observe Jesus’ teaching — His Truth — and prophesy against all moral relativism and injustices of our day. It is important to contact our governmental officials via telephone, email, or letter about laws or proposed laws contrary to Church teaching.

In an expansion of our previous Lenten series, we will reflect on Lectionary readings for the upcoming Len-ten Sunday and integrating the key themes that are at the heart of our Catholic social tradition. The Church’s social teaching is a rich treasure of wisdom about building a just society and living lives of holiness amidst the challenges of modern society.
