Welcome to Year One/Two! Welcome to the new school year, we hope you have had a restful and revitalising break and enjoyed spending quality time with your child. For those who were impacted by the extensive bushfires this summer, we are available to support you and your family. Our team for 2020 is Jill Lynch (Monday – Thursday) & Mel Stone (Friday) (1/2A), Brooke Lindsay (1/2B), Linda Robertson (1/2C) and Bec Wilson (Foundation/1A). We are excited to be able to work with your child and aim to provide a stimulating and engaging learning program that is challenging and supporting. The children have settled in well and are getting to know their new classmates. New friendships are forming and classroom connectedness is of a high priority for all. The children are establishing routines and working as a team to complete daily tasks. We would like to continue the strong partnerships with parents and guardians through open communication and if ever you have any questions, please make time to see us so that we can maximise the learning opportunities for your child. Sun Smart From now until the end of April hats are compulsory and are kept in the classrooms for the duration of the term. Children must wear their school hat during outside activities, including outside playtime and during Physical Education sessions. Sunscreen is also available for the children to use. If you do not want your child to use the school’s sunscreen please provide an alternative. Supplies Can all supplies be sent to school to ensure all children have their books ready for each subject area? We have noticed some children do not have a pair of scissors, pencil case, library bag, art smock, handy pouch or reading journal yet. Thanks for your cooperation with this.

Water Bottles Children are encouraged to bring a water bottle to school. If your child is bringing a water bottle to school please ensure it contains only water and that all water bottles are named.

Specialist and Library Timetable All Grade One/Two specialist classes will be on Wednesday and we will all be visiting the Library on a Friday.

Wellbeing All Grade One/Two classes will focus on resilience, restorative practices, mindfulness and check-in and check-out circles. Circle Time is a teaching strategy that improves student engagement and allows teachers and students to explore their knowledge and understanding. The program develops self-esteem, gratitude, empathy and cooperation between students.

Unexplained Absences-SMS Texting

As a part of the government’s Student Attendance Guidelines for school’s we are obliged to send an SMS to parents every school day, alerting parents to the school absence of their child/children. It is important that we have up to date information at the office as well as notification from you when your child is absent for whatever reason. Please remember to call the school on 9783 3769

Lost Property Please ensure all clothing and belongings are labelled clearly. Label EVERYTHING to avoid having to replace lost items.

Lost Property is located at the office.

Fruit and Veggie Snack Fruit and veggie snacks have already started in our classrooms. It provides a valuable ‘brain food’

break at 10am each day. Fruit and vegetables are an excellent source of fuel for the brain,

instead of releasing short bursts of energy like processed food, fruit and vegetables have

carbohydrates that the body breaks down gradually, releasing glucose to fuel the brain and body

over time.

Take Home Readers Children will begin to take home reading books over the coming weeks. Reading every day with your child for just five

minutes a day has a profound impact on their ability to read. When reading with your child, encourage them to point

to words as they read, discuss the pictures and try to work out unfamiliar words by sounding them out. Talk and

discuss with your child about what they have read and make predictions about the story before they read.

NB: The Reading Handy Pouch needs to be returned to school every day with the take home book and folder inside.

Wizzy Words (High frequency words) Wizzy Words will start with the take home readers. They are designed to improve children’s recognition and

processing of frequently used words in reading and writing.

Parent Helpers In the next couple of weeks, as we formulate our timetable, we will have an idea of when parents can come in to assist in the classroom. For your information, parents need to have a current Working with Children Check and a copy of this must be provided to the office. This can be applied for online and is free of charge for volunteers. Please see the office if you require more information about this or if you have a current WWC card.

Looking forward to a great year!  The Year One/Two Team.
