International Congress Hidden Hunger www.hiddenhunger.uni-hohenheim.de

The First International Congress Hidden Hunger took place on

March 6-9, 2013, at the University of Hohenheim, Stuttgart,

Germany. It was organised by the Institute of Biological

Chemistry and Nutrition and the Food Security Center. The

congress had three objectives: (1.) To create awareness of the

global problem of Hidden Hunger, (2.) to get scientific issues

on the agenda of policy makers, academics, politicians and

business leaders, and (3.) to discuss solutions to address

worldwide micronutrient deficiencies. Attention was given to

Africa and Asia as well as North America and Europe. Hidden

hunger is an increasing problem even in the developed

countries, whose potential negative consequences on long-

term health are often overlooked and underestimated.

The website represents detailed information about the event

as well as the results of the presentations and discussions of

scientists from different areas, field workers, members of non-

governmental organizations (NGOs) and representatives from

administration, management and policy who were invited from

around the world.

Food Security Center (FSC) Nutri-matrix www.nutri-matrix.org

Participants of the First International Congress Hidden

Hunger 2013 called for a better communication between

scientists, policy makers, politicians, NGOs, and local field

workers to improve knowledge about food insecurity and

hidden hunger as well as to ensure better domestic and cross-

border cooperation world-wide. Nutri-matrix.org serves as a

broad database for use in future fight against hidden hunger.

The website includes an overview of research projects,

funding offers and requests as well as collaboration and

research requests from allover the world.

Each and everyone has possibility to submit research projects,

funding offers and requests as well as collaboration and

research requests.

It offers a platform for exchange of study results, experiences,

observations, reflections and ideas.

The Food Security Center’s mission is to provide innovative

and effective scientific contributions to reduce hunger and

achieve food security (Millennium Developmental Goal 1).

Achieving this mission requires careful analysis and science-

supported identification of effective and efficient policy,

technical and institutional responses, including impact

assessment. The Food Security Center utilizes a

multidisciplinary approach through teaching, conducting

research and providing policy advice in cooperation with

national and international development organizations and

partner Higher Education Institutes in the developing world.

Research topics include food availability, food access, food

use, food quality, food safety and food utilization, giving

particular concern to gender equality, rights of women and

sustainability of agricultural production. The target groups of the

Food Security Center include people affected by hunger and/or

malnutrition or people at risk of food insecurity, decision makers

in development-oriented organizations involved in the formation

and implementation of food and agricultural related

development policies, and scientists and graduate students at

partner Higher Education Institutes.

The website represents detailed information about the FSC, its

objectives, activities, events and research results.
