FOREWORD

The current Director,-, like those published in the preceding 7ears, is designed to provide information on all companies, agencies, or individuals who are producing minerals or mineral aggregates in Washington. The names or the concerns and or the mines or other properties are listed, together with addresses, locations, and the minerals produced. In most instances the concerns listed. are currently operating; some, however, are in a de"f'elopment stage ba.t expect to produce in the near future. The data used are from the files ot the Division or Mines·and Geology- and have been obtained principally through personal contacts with the operators at their mines, quarries, or places of ba.siness.

Sand, gravel, and common crushed-rock operations are f'airl)r complete and include all the more prominent producers--particularl7 those operating coJllllercial pits and quarries, as distinct from state and railroad quarries. As the emphasis is on operations of' some permanence, the man,- pits or the Washington Department of HighwaY'S are not listed individually because of' the temporar,r or intermittent nature or their production. The crushed rock referred to is mostly used for road-building purposes, but some is used for riprap and breakwaters. As such it is distinguished from dimension and architectural stone, which are produced by concerns listed under the general beading of nonmetallic operations.

Every effort bas been made to insure the completeness and accuracy or the data included in this Director,-. However, as changes in status due to reorganization, removals, and altered mining conditions are continually taking place, it will be appreciated it additions and corrections are broa.ght to the attention of the Division.

The aetive mining operations of the state are arranged in three categories: those producing or currently preparing to produce METALLIC minerals; those producing NONMETALLIC minerals exclusive of sand, gravel, riprap and cru.sbed rock; and those producing SAND AND GRAVEL, riprap and era.shed rock. In the back portion of the directory appear entries listed alphabetically by organization under each or the three categories. Each entry, fn addition to the organization name, includes the names or officers or other individuals familiar with the operation, a mailing address, the current status of activity, the product or products in order or importance, and the location of the producing property by legal land description.

Preceding the alphabetical listings appear three sets or indexes. The first, the PROPERTY INDEX, requires that only the appropriate mine, prospect, claim, pit, or quarry name be known fn order that one may ascertain full information abOllt the active property from the alphabetical section. The second, the PROilJCT INDEX, requires that only the product or products from a property in any of the categories be known in order to obtain full infornation. The third index, the COUNTY INDEX, lists all the active operations of each category that are located in each county. This index also includes the product or products of each operation. Tlms by lmoring only the location of a property, one may obtain full information.

Underscoring indicates the metal of principal economic importance.

Metallic minerals accounted for a total value of $14,103,000, or approximately 25.9 percent of the state's total production in 1951; industrial minerals accounted for the remaining $40,449,000, or 74.1 percent. In 1951 Washington was 31st in rank with 0.40 percent of the total United States mineral output, Idaho was 27th in rank with 0.61 percent, and Oregon was 37th in rank with 0.21 percent.
