VSS Creative Virtual Photography Club is
growing at a healthy pace getting top
photographers as well as keen beginners with
loads of talent on board. The young guns are
showing their worth in heaps and bounds.
To the traditional six categories: Avant Garde,
Creative Portraiture, Creative Pictorial,
Creative Nature, Creative Monochrome and
Photojournalism two more were added:
Creative Scapes and Fine Art.
A maximum of eight entries per photographer
are considered monthly with a max of two
TOP 10's per category.
The goal, to have the TOP 10 winners
published in an annual glossy ‘coffee-table’
book, was realised last year. TOP VSS
Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2018 made
this dream a reality.
VSS Creative TOP 10 Photographers 2019
represents some of the best creative
photography of 2019 in SA. TOP 10 2019 has
taken the benchmark one notch higher, which
almost seemed impossible when glancing
through TOP 10 2018 book.
The photos featured are more than 800
winning images from January to December
2019, from 160 photographers a 30%
increase of photographers reaching the TOP
10. Total entries for 2019 was more than
10,000 and around 500 photographers
competing.
TOP 10 winners are featured alphabetically with a
small bio of each photographer together with his /
her winning images of 2019. TOP 10 1st, 2nd and
3rd winners of month images are displayed larger
than others.
The last chapter, From our Judges features work
of the adjudicators, who for obvious reasons
could not enter the competition.
The first TOP 10 publication was almost a
Who’s Who of Photography - this, the 2nd publication, is an almost
definitive Who’s Who in Modern SA Photography.
Martin Dudley stated that, this publication printed
annually will be a historic reference of our work
and a history of photography in SA, 10 years from
now. The printed photo will always supercede
electronic versions flying around on the net.
I would like to thank and congratulate all
participating photographers, they inspired us and
collectively made VSS Virtual Club the towering
platform for most of the top SA photographers it is
today. And lastly my family and judges who spent hours
adjudicating and discussing top photos in order to
award winners - with the quality of work entered
this is a daunting task.
What strikes us, as judges, is the
diversity of work.

Dricky Gouws
Part time photographer Dricky Gouws always admired the beauty of art. She tried out a few mediums like jewellery making and painting on wooden canvas. She is a versatile photographer with a passion for people and portrait photography. Between landscapes and portrait s her mind wonders, a story born in her imagination, takes shape. To create the story as it features in her mind, she started applying it to her photography, and there her love for altered reality photos started...

Debbie Boettcher
Debbie's love of all things “arty” is something she inherited from both her parents. Mom was a cake designer and won many medals for her skills in baking and cake decorating.Dad was a sign writer by trade. Debbie has a Graphic Design background and designed her first magazine at the tender age of eleven.
Although photography is only a hobby, it has become her passion.Debbie's main genre is flower photography but discovering
her Photoshop skills has taken Debbie’s creativity to a new level
of photographic manipulation and altered reality.
Her biggest inspiration in this regard
has been her friend and mentor, Martin Dudley, who selflessly shares his talent in order for others to learn and grow.

Dudley Watson
Dudley Watson's passion for photography ignited when he realised the ability of the photographic image to convey mood, movement and feeling to an image. He enjoys studying the techniques and artistic poses of other art forms and incorporating these into his work, in particular impressionistic painting and the movement agility of the human body in ballet.
Dudley works both in Colour and Black and White and experiments with in camera techniques such as Intentional Camera Movement. His photographic dictum is
“May I capture a Small Window of God's Creation”

Ed Raubenheimer
I am a passionate nature lover, wildlife and Bird photographer. Born 1945 started Photography 6 years ago, most of my equipment I had to buy second hand. My big love for Birds began 30 Years ago when I was breeding foreign wild birds and became a foreign wild bird judge. From there my enthusiasm grew from just viewing the animals to photographing them. In the last 5 years my photography transformed to a more professional and sometimes artistic approach. As a photographer my focus has always been on mammals and birds mainly in flight, I have been going to the Kgalagadi, for the past 5 years, and love the nature in this dry desert eria, I am also a passionate Fisherman and love the Zambezi valley, never leaving my cameras that are always by my side.
Hope you enjoy my photos.

Amateur/hobby photographer, Elaine Lamb's interest in photography began in her teens when she discovered her mother's Brownie box camera and later her father's Retina IA. Before going to University, a friend introduced her to a dark room and film processing. Elaine’s first year at Architecture School included a semester in photography and graphics. Later, in her own make shift dark room, she explored pushing recording film to achieve grainy effects. Photography helped her out of a depression in 2012 when she became fascinated by the world of 'small things' as seen through the macro lens.
Elaine’s interest is still in creating artistic effects, either in camera or in post processing.

ISO? FStop?? Sluiterspoed? Dit was letterlik grieks. Nou gaan dit darem al beter en ek en my kamera is nog steeds beste vriende.
Ek beskou fotografie as “My happy place"

Elize Labuschagne
Over the course of 35 years, Elize successfully applied the visual arts in her business, drawing on our cultural, historical and natural heritage. Starting out with an academic career as a cultural historian restoring historic buildings, she soon branched into interior design, designing and managing creative projects both locally and abroad. More than a decade in product design, marketing and supply of décor goods to the trade and shops followed, during which photography was applied to her own range of home products. After her retirement in 2017, she allowed herself the luxury of indulging full time in her lifelong passion of photography. She photographs what tickles her fancy. Spending lots of time at local and exotic wildlife destinations resulted in a large portfolio of nature photography. She is a passionate traveller and has a love affair with Africa, the East and South America. Married to Rodney Hull, Elize lives in Brooklyn, Pretoria, in an old house, surrounded by lots of old and interesting stuff collected over many years.

EVELYN GIBSON FPSSA
Evelyn Gibson is a South African based photographer with over 20 years of experience both in digital and film. Her father was a great photographer and she feels she has inherited some of his creativity. She has a passion for a wide range of photographic genres, and, having travelled widely both internationally and around Southern Africa, she has collected a range of different images.
Evelyn currently serves on the Board of PSSA as Director- Public Relations and is also a member of its National Honours Judging Panel.
Being heavily involved in Club Photography, she regularly judges at different clubs around the country or assists through remote judging.
Evelyn's approach to photography comes from a photographer once saying to her
“light is the river on which technique sinks or floats”
Emotion, spirit, conveying mood,
conveying a message, feeling the atmosphere needs to be there when capturing the image. One must feel they could walk into the image and feel part of it.

I had an interest in photography from a very young age.My first camera was a Kodak Brownie Fiesta with which I took pictures while doing my army year in 1973 in Walvisbaai (still have some pictures in an album).I officially joined amateur photography in January 1982 when I joined the Vanderbijlparkse Fotografiese Vereniging and PSSA later the same year.Photography has given me so much; it is a pleasure and privilege to give back to photography. I am club committee member since 1982. I am a PSSA board member since 1999. Part of my duties is that of PSSA treasurer. I am a past chairman of excom and still is a member of excom. I served as president of PSSA in 2005/2006 and is currently serving a new term as president.I started off my photography as a slide worker and I practiced most genres of photography (still do). I achieved my APSSA (slides) in 1995 with a mixed panel and in 2004 I achieved my FPSSA (slides) with a specialist sport panel. In 2006 I achieved my APSSA (digital) with a specialist Nature panel and in 2009 my FPSSA (digital) with a specialist Landscape panel. It was a great honour for me to be awarded a Hon FPSSA in 2007 after my term as president. In 2011 I achieved my AFIAP with pictorial and nature acceptances at International Salons.Although I do most genres, landscape photography is very close to my heart and in 2013 I achieved my MPSSA at the St Lucia congress with a presentation on landscapes. I am also actively involved in training, one of which is the JAP programme. One never stops learning, and sharing knowledge is part of my photography. After “all these years” I am still very passionate about photography.

Photography for me was to push a button on a film camera, capturing a memory and having it development... until I did a photography course in 2010. My whole understanding of taking photos changed the day I started using a digital camera.Photography is a hobby besides my garden.
My passion is macro
photography and that's where
my gardencomes in handy.
I love seeing the detail in small things. Wildlife is a huge favourite, I also spend a lot oftime experiment with abstract photography.

A fine art photographer who believes images are made not taken.
Gaby enjoys experimenting with different subject matter, with a tendency towards portrait. Her passion lies in the conceptual and creative creation of fine art images and the time spent in post production is at least as important to her as capturing images in camera. Her work is often dark and moody, aiming to elicit a reaction from the viewer. She uses any camera available and several of her awarded pictures were captured with a mobile device, some fully edited on the phone.

Gerbus Vermaak - Wild dogs on the hunt
Gerbus Vermaak's interest in photography evolved from the need to identify the birds he passionately seeks.
His dream is to photograph all the birds found in Southern Africa,
hopefully spending his retirement in this fulfilling way. With the assistance and guidance from knowledgeable photographer friends,
photography has become his biggest passion regularly taking him to new and exciting places.
Photographing birds especially birds in flight is his first love but he will photograph any wildlife and even a grandchild will do.
I am an amateur photographer and an enthusiast with a passion for the natural wonders of the environment, the power of the animal kingdom and the trek of people through the journey of life. God's creation brought these subjects to life in a world of beauty, passion and emotions that we experience throughout our lives. Photography serves as my looking glasses that allow me to see and appreciate the world around us, in all its facets.
Photography is a gift that always keeps on giving It provides me the opportunity to tell stories of diverse people, their inner most reflections of themselves; their inner being that finds a presence in the stills of photography. It does not only provide a voice for the voiceless but brings a connection to us all. This connection invokes past memories and often, creates the need for us, to tell the story to others with the hope of creating change in others. Apart from nature and wildlife; street photography and portraits are what appeals to me most and the stories they are looking to share with the world. Through photography, my goal is to portray the beauty, love and kindness of the human spirit.

Gonnie Myburgh
Photography, especially Nature Photography, became an important part of my very being when I used it as a healing process after a traumatic period in my life.
When we engage in photography, we are usually focusing on the beauty of a situation. That is why
the creative process of this art form is so satisfying and uplifting.
The art of photography will always be a learning experience for me. As photographer, you not only try to improve your technical skills while recording images, but also learns much more about the details and beauty of nature when you are able to contemplate the enlarge results of your work on the screen of the computer.

Haig Fourie
Amateur photographer and a bit on the obsessive side of photography. Haig started photography in 2013 when he joined Vanderbijlpark Photographic club, before that he loved taking pictures on holidays but after joining the club it became a passion.
As a photographer I try and be as versatile as possible
and love photographing almost anything possible
but love macro, monochrome and sport.
Macro photography is probably at the top of his photo repertoire, insects fascinates him for how small and beautiful detail they have that can not be seen with the human eye.

Hanli Smit
Hanli Smit, an accomplished fine art photographer, has carved a professional niche for herself in the
field of Jewellery Photography.
With her Graphic and Fashion Design background, and her love of painting and drawing, Hanli has always interwoven creativity in all that she does. Thus, Hanli is often found not just behind the camera, but actively involved in the actual design of the entire costume, make-up, props, accessories, etc. that goes into one of her photographic portraits or creations.
In 2019, as a testament to her creative talent in photography, Hanli racked up impressive awards in prestigious national competitions: She was placed in the top 10 in Conceptual Photography at the Africa Photo Awards 2019, as well as attaining 5th Place in Conceptual Photography at the Admired in Africa 2019 Awards, and then took 2nd and 3rd position in two categories at the Photo and Video 2019 awards. However, the most prestigious accolade for her is the inclusion of many of her excellent photos in this VSS book.

Hannes Reinecke
I started my working life at the SABC in 1974, covering a variety of events as an outside broadcast video cameraman, before moving to film, shooting documentaries.I moved on to the magical world of still photography in 1980, as a staff photographer for The Star newspaper in Johannesburg. I then joined Rapport, the Afrikaans Sunday newspaper for 6 years, where I had the pleasure of shooting a lot of the infamous back-page girly/glamour shots, an introduction into the world of glamour photography. I rejoined the SABC in 1986, working as a video journalist for TV News, in the Sports department. I was fortunate enough to cover three World Cups, both Rugby and Cricket, and two Dakar Rallies. I was also part of the A1 GP series for three years. I traveled the globe as a member of Team RSA, reporting exclusively for TV News. Since retiring 4 years ago I do photography full time. I specialize in glamour, with a bit of fashion and the odd arty pic thrown into the mix.
