BEARS CHARGING: Norwood’s women have won three in a row. PICTURES: Peter Argent & VSA Archives

USC’s women improved to 7-0 with victory over Mt Lofty at

Brighton Secondary School on Friday night.Olivia Orchard starred for Lion,

as they inflicted Lofty’s second loss of the season with a 3-1 triumph.Lion gained the upperhand as

they won the first set, before Lofty hit back to claim a tight second set.

Norwood passed their biggest test of 2013, overcoming

South Adelaide in a top-of-the-table men’s State League clash at Mt Lofty Sports Centre on Saturday. The Bears entered the contest

on a six-game winning streak, and claimed the opening set against a South side which hadn’t lost since round two.Despite losing London Olympian

Henley Hawks fought their way to their third win of the

men’s State League season, with an epic five-set win over Austral Phoenix at Mt Lofty Sports Centre on Saturday. After a sluggish start the Hawks

found themselves a set down against the speedy offence of a youthful Phoenix outfit.Henley rallied to claim a two-

sets-to-one lead before lapsing

Norwood and USC Lion maintained their undefeated starts to the State League season - proving too strong for their nearest rivals in top-of-the-table clashes.

But Lofty were unable to match USC when it mattered most, dropping a tight fourth set to remain in second-place.USC’s men are clinging to fourth-

place, with Mt Lofty closing within one game following a four-set victory over Lion. The performance of Sam Boehm

was impressive in setting up the victory for Mt Lofty.

Nathan Roberts, South showed plenty of determination turning the early deficit into a 2-1 lead.Norwood asserted their

authority with a dominant fourth set, before maintaining their undefeated start to the season as Sam White played a key role.Meanwhile, Norwood’s women

tightened their grip on a top four spot, with a 3-1 victory over winless South.

in the fourth, resulting in the Hawks’ second consecutive five-setter.The offensive combination of

Travis Moran and Brad Tutton sealed the nail-biting victory for the Hawks, who sit equal third on the League table.Henley’s women remain fourth

on the ladder, after a tough five-set loss to Austral.

change to the women’s reserves ladder, with Austral staying third following their victory over Henley.Meanwhile, in the men’s

Austral won 3-2 over the Hawks.Mt Lofty have a game in hand,

NORWOOD BEARSVS

USC LIONThe Norwood Bears have proven they are the third best side in the women’s competition in recent weeks, establishing their grip on third with consecutive wins over Austral (5th), Henley (3rd) & South (6th).Their next fortnight looms as a test of just how competitive they are, with undefeated Lion today, and second-placed Mt Lofty next weekend.Young Kelly van der Linde has been a key factor in the Bear’s surge, while the contribution of Bonnie Poulter has helped as Norwood put themselves in contention for a finals berth in 2013.The Bears get a chance to prove themselves as a genuine threat, with a win over Lion. USC have been brilliant in 2013, combining class and consistency to remain undefeated, but have been pushed in recent weeks with rivals keen to inflict their first defeat.Olivia Orchard continued her solid recent form in last week’s win.

MATCH OF THE ROUND (SATURDAY 2PM)

HENLEY HAWKSVS

SOUTH ADELAIDEHenley will be striving for back-to-back wins for the first time in 2013 when they clash with South Adelaide on Saturday. But despite an impressive perfomance to defeat Austral last weekend, the Hawks face a huge test if they are to beat South. While South had their four-game winning streak snapped by Norwood last weekend, they still showed encouraging signs against the undefeated Bears.South will be keen to bounce back from that defeat, and have proven to be Henley’s bogey side in recent times, winning all three clashes in 2012 against a Hawks outfit which played in the finals. This match could be won and lost at the net, with Brad Tutton and Travis Moran clicking in recent weeks for the Hawks. For South, Luke Bonser played a huge role last weekend as they were forced to reshuffle after Nathan Roberts returned to the AIS.
