American Fibromyalgia Syndrome Association (AFSA)

Nonprofit Organization

http://www.afsafund.org/

http://www.afsafund.org/grant.htm#app

AFSA’s primary mission is to fund superior quality, scientific studies on fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS), which is an extremely painful, fatiguing, and often debilitating medical condition. Studies show that FMS affects 3-5% of the general population. By stepping up research on the causes and treatments for fibromyalgia, AFSA and its generous contributors are working together to make a substantial difference in the lives of millions. Testing therapies that may greatly benefit people with fibromyalgia is a top priority for AFSA. Yet, the goal of better treatments strongly relies upon an improved understanding of what is occurring on a biochemical basis. With AFSA’s financial assistance, we are hopeful that the following questions can be answered about fibromyalgia: What are the mechanisms involved in producing the body-wide pain? Why do patients wake up from a night’s sleep feeling stiff, achy, and tired? Do sleep disturbances in fibromyalgia play a role in generating the symptoms? How is the extreme fatigue and dyscognition (jumbled thoughts and memory impairments) related to the physiology of fibromyalgia? To what degree does treatment of muscular knots lead to reduced pain and improved function? What is the most effective therapy for targeting the muscle pain in fibromyalgia patients? Are there medications used for other conditions that should be evaluated for treating people with fibromyalgia? Can laboratory tests be used to accurately identify or diagnose patients? Also, can this information be used to determine disease severity or aid in predicting more successful treatments for individual patients?

American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)

Foundation https://afsp.org/

https://afsp.org/our-work/research/grant-information/

AFSP's Research Grants support studies that will increase our understanding of suicide or test treatments and other interventions that save lives. AFSP suicide research grants program priority areas for 2017–19: 1) Pain and suicide and 2) Opioids and suicide. We aim to fund at least one to two rigorously designed priority area grants among those awarded in each cycle. Our two-year priority period allows for resubmission of unsuccessful applications in the second year. While we encourage applications in these priority areas, we also encourage and welcome all applications related to preventing suicide. In addition, we continue to maintain a strong interest in research related to survivors of suicide loss. The National Action Alliance for Suicide Prevention has defined its priorities in terms of six questions: 1) Why do people become suicidal?; 2) How can we better or optimally detect/predict risk?; 3) What interventions are effective? What prevents individuals from engaging in suicidal behavior?; 4) What services are most effective for treating the suicidal person and preventing suicidal behavior?; 5) What other types of preventive interventions (outside health care systems) reduce suicide risk?; and 6) What new and existing research infrastructure is needed to reduce suicidal behavior?

Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation Foundation https://www.gatesfou

https://www.gatesfoundation.org/How-We-Work/General-Information/Grant-Opportunities

To bring about the kinds of changes that will help people live healthier and more productive lives, we seek to understand the world’s inequities. Whether the challenge is low-yield crops in Africa or low graduation rates in Los Angeles, we listen and learn so we can identify pressing problems that get too little attention. Then we consider whether we can make a meaningful difference with our influence and our investments, whether it is a grant or a contract. All of our strategies—more than two dozen across the foundation—have emerged through this process of identifying what we want to accomplish for people and where we can have the greatest impact. Once we commit to an area of need, we define our major goals and identify a clear path to achieving them. Within each strategy, which has an allocation of resources, we collaborate with grantee and partner organizations to develop proposals that align with our strategic priorities and the organization’s focus and capabilities. An important part of this process is reaching agreement on what success will look like for the investment.

Children's Cancer Research Fund (CCRF)

Nonprofit Organization

https://childrenscancer.org/

https://childrenscancer.org/esa/

With only 4% of federal cancer funding dedicated to childhood cancer, support of Children’s Cancer Research Fund (CCRF) is crucial to finding safer, more effective therapies for kids battling cancer. CCRF funds innovative and promising research. They give seed grants for innovative research projects that hold great promise but don’t yet qualify for federal or larger funding. Without this support, many brilliant ideas wouldn’t move forward. They state: 1) Clinical trials are critical to providing kids with options when they’ve exhausted the existing treatment protocols. These trials also test novel treatments that lead to new and improved therapies for kids with cancer everywhere. 2) We collaborate with leading researchers who stay keenly attuned to the ever-changing landscape of cancer research. The research we fund is shared with more than 9,000 experts around the globe, helping accelerate promising discoveries. 3) Fewer doctors are choosing a career in hematology/oncology, so we’re helping attract and train researchers by funding emerging scientists and fellowships that build experience and expertise. For more than 35 years, we’ve funded over 90 fellows who are working around the world to create safer, more effective treatments for kids. 4) There are more childhood cancer survivors than ever before, but many of those children suffer from late effects of cancer treatment including infertility, hearing loss, brain damage, vision loss, heart problems and more. We fund research that works to understand these effects and care for children beyond their diagnosis and treatment.

Hearst Foundations Foundation https://www.hearstfdn.org/

https://www.hearstfdn.org/funding-priorities/

The Hearst Foundations support well-established nonprofit organizations that address significant issues within their major areas of interests – culture, education, health and social service – and that primarily serve large demographic and/or geographic constituencies. In each area of funding, the Foundations seek to identify those organizations achieving truly differentiated results relative to other organizations making similar efforts for similar populations. The Foundations also look for evidence of sustainability beyond their support. Initiatives are: CULTURE: fund cultural institutions that offer meaningful programs in the arts and sciences, prioritizing those which enable engagement by young people and create a lasting and measurable impact. The Foundations also fund select programs nurturing and developing artistic talent. EDUCATION: fund educational institutions demonstrating uncommon success in preparing students to thrive in a global society. The Foundations’ focus is largely on higher education, but they also fund innovative models of early childhood and K-12 education, as well as professional development. HEALTH: assist leading regional hospitals, medical centers and specialized medical institutions providing access to high-quality healthcare for low-income populations. In response to the shortage of healthcare professionals necessary to meet the country’s evolving healthcare needs, the Foundations also fund programs designed to enhance skills and increase the number of practitioners and educators across roles in healthcare. The Foundations also support medical research and the development of young investigators to help create a broad and enduring impact on the nation’s health. SOCIAL SERVICE: fund direct-service organizations that tackle the roots of chronic poverty by applying effective solutions to the most challenging social and economic problems. The Foundations prioritize supporting programs that have proven successful in facilitating economic independence and in strengthening families. Preference is also given to programs with the potential to scale productive practices in order to reach more people in need.

St. Baldrick's Foundation

Nonprofit Organization

https://www.stbaldricks.org/for-researchers

Funding Priorities include: New Discovery Research: We believe it is important to find new ways to battle childhood cancers, with cutting-edge discoveries that are safer, less toxic and more effective than current treatment options; Translational Research: We want the research we fund to have tangible impact on kids with cancer – taking what is learned in the laboratory and translating it into direct benefits for patients; Clinical Trials and Infrastructure: Clinical trials are integral to improving cure rates, and most children and teens with cancer are treated on these trials — receiving either the best known treatment, or one that may prove to be better. We also provide funding for personnel and resources to give more children access to clinical trials; and The Next Generation of Pediatric Oncologists: As today’s experts retire, it’s critical that the next generation be well trained to build on their success and push forward to new cures. We must attract the best and brightest, train them in pediatric oncology research and support them with funding until they have the experience to compete with those established in the field.
