Majesty and Mystery in the Far East

For me, the Far East is the ultimate cruise destination. It offers an endless range of cultural experiences that arouses the senses, historical wonders and places of extreme natural beauty, sitting comfortably alongside modern and contemporary amenities. Mystical, magical and so different from anything else on earth, the Far East will reveal fascinating discoveries just around the corner, whether you are a seasoned traveller, or a first time visitor to this magnificent region, and there is no better way to get acquainted with the array of destinations than by cruising. My ship of choice for this latest adventure is the newly refurbished and award-winning luxury cruise liner, Celebrity Millennium, with spa-inspired staterooms, signature restaurants and redesigned balconies. In fact, you’d be forgiven for thinking that you’re on a brand new, mid-sized version of the larger Solstice Class of vessels operated by Celebrity.

As you would expect, luxury comes as standard on board Celebrity Millennium, and with one of the highest staff to guest ratios in the cruise industry, Celebrity Cruises are redefining service, ensuring that you have an experience second to none.

Everywhere in Singapore it seems, is connected to the name “Raffles” and none more than the famous Raffles Hotel. Here you can experience the legendary Singapore Sling cocktail, in the place it was created, and you can also partake in a thoroughly English affair, afternoon tea! I’ve been told you could be forgiven for thinking you were at the Ritz in London. With so much to see and do, to taste and tempt, you will not be short of activities, and two days is just enough for you to get a great introduction to this uber-modern city and also to tick off everything on your “must see” list. With your cruise ship waiting, it’s time to bid farewell to Singapore and set sail for Bangkok.Laem Chabang, the main port for Bangkok, is located nearly 2 hours south of the city, but the excursion to Bangkok is definitely worth it. Bangkok has to be the most exciting and yet peculiar Asian city I have ever visited. There is a real wealth of historical sites to see, from glimmering golden temples to sacred statues of Buddha – Wat Po houses the most amazing and huge, 45 metre-long reclining Buddha, lavished with gold and mother-of-pearl, and is definitely worth a visit.Bangkok is a cultural phenomenon, shopping heaven and tourist treasure all rolled into one. It’s steamy (although not quite as hot as Singapore), pulsating and intense at first, and it’s up to you to find your niche amongst the dazzling temples, eclectic markets, gleaming palaces, glitzy shopping malls and famous (albeit risqué) nightlife. There is something for everyone here, but I can certainly recommend a dinner cruise up the Chao Praya River, followed by a cocktail at The Dome, located on the 63rd floor of the Lebua State Tower, with possibly the most incredible city vistas I have ever experienced. One of the best aspects of this cruise itinerary is the number of

exploring the city, one reason to visit this area is to experience the majestic and mysterious Halong Bay, which is a natural wonder of 3,000 or so limestone karsts and islands rising from emerald waters and dotted with secluded beaches and grottos. This is a definite must see, and possibly the absolute highlight of the entire cruise. After an overnight stay on board in Hanoi, the course is set for the final leg of the cruise, and the spectacular skyline of Hong Kong. Reader Offers Ltd have again included a two night stay at the 5H Mira Hong Kong, giving you the opportunity to explore, as in Singapore. There is an endless amount of activities and experiences on offer, but for me, the out-of-this-world view of the harbour from The Peak is simply magnificent – don’t forget your camera!A flight back to London wraps up the most incredible Far East experience. Wonderful destinations accompanied by an equally wonderful luxurious cruise, plus time at your leisure both before and after the cruise in two of Asia’s most interesting and exciting cities.

For me this is the perfect recipe for getting my cruise off to a superlative start, and having sailed on Celebrity Millennium before, I am looking forward to getting back on board. For this voyage we will fly from London to Singapore to catch up with our ship. This is a totally new offer, exclusively packaged and available through Reader Offers Ltd, and as you would come to expect, they have also included a two night stay in the 5H Fairmont, Singapore before embarking the ship. I have been to Singapore on a number of occasions, however always as a transit destination, so I am really looking forward to my first experience of navigating and discovering the streets on my own.Singapore is a city-state located at the bottom of the Malaysian peninsula, is very busy and densely populated, and is a melting pot of different cultures with a distinctly Chinese, Malay and Indian influence. Modern skyscrapers reach up to the heavens at every turn,

intermingled with a vast range of eateries offering an array of tasty Asian fusion cuisine, shopping centres and high-class cosmopolitan hotels. All this, and so much more, including the hot and very humid tropical climate.

Continuing with the voyage, Celebrity Millennium sails north up the Vietnamese coast to Chan May which is the port for excursions to both Hue and Danang. Hue is the imperial capital of Vietnam and a visit is like taking a few steps back in time. Full of ancient splendour, but also firmly fixed on most tourism maps, Hue is a popular tour destination, and once you see The Citadel, you’ll know why! Danang on the other hand is very different. Lacking the French colonial architecture, but boasting lovely beaches and authentic local cuisine, it certainly has its own charm.

Celebrity Millennium then sails to Hanoi with its fascinating blend of East and West, with influences from both China and France. Just think Parisian grace, Asian pace! Other than

overnight stays in port, allowing you plenty of time to investigate each destination at your own pace. Back on board Celebrity Millennium, the next port of call is Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam.Formerly known as Saigon, Ho Chi Minh City is a high-octane city of commerce and culture, interspersed with timeless alleys, ancient pagodas, teeming markets and wooden shops (selling silk, spices and baskets), sleek skyscrapers, designer malls, gourmet restaurants and minimalist bars. There is a real French influence here

with many colonial vestiges located in and around Ho

Chi Minh City, and my recommendation is to stop off at a street-side

stall for a take on the French colonisers

simple salad sandwich, a heavenly Bánh Mi, made from tender chunks of grilled pork with lashings of Vietnamese mayonnaise wrapped in

a baguette. Simply delicious!

Expert tips:• Singapore Zoo

offers a totally unique night safari for viewing nocturnal animals, and Reader Offers Ltd can include this as an optional add-on to your trip.

• Make sure you drink a Singapore Sling at the Raffles Hotel, where it was invented.

• Bangkok’s legendary MBK Shopping Mall offers some amazing bargains spread over 8 floors and over 2,000 shops.

• Buy some Tiger Balm. It’s great for all sorts of ailments from muscular pain to tension headaches to relieving insect bites.

Celebrity Cruises are redefining service, ensuring that you have an experience second to none.

With an incredible array of sights and experiences throughout the year, our intrepid cruiser Nigel Harris takes us on an evocative journey along Norway’s stunning coastline aboard the authentic working ships of Hurtigruten. There are many ways that you can visit, see, explore and discover Norway, but none more authentic than the unique cruising experience offered by Hurtigruten. No cruise line knows Norway like them, and their working vessels have been a vital link between cities, towns and hamlets, carrying local passengers and freight since 1893. This is great heritage indeed, and also no finer qualification for being your personal guide through this most wonderful corner of the world.Their unrivalled knowledge of the Norwegian coastline is second to none, and as such the experience is very much like being in the company of a local, giving you the benefit of their in-depth understanding of local culture, history and tradition, enabling you to experience the real heart and soul of the country. Hurtigruten don’t just offer you a cruise, rather an immersive and insightful travel experience. Not only that, once on board, you will discover what makes Hurtigruten so special, as the secrets of Norway are revealed to you as you sail in and out of inlets, fjords and coastal contours which are not only inaccessible to other, larger

glides past your cabin window throughout the voyage, and as the ships never stray far from the coastline there is always something fascinating to see at every stage of your cruise.Norway is renowned for its love of seafood and the culinary offering on board is reflective of this fact. The food is fresh from the ocean, and each evening the restaurant treats you to gourmet waiter-service fayre that wouldn’t feel out of place on a traditional cruise liner. The public areas are well appointed too, with lounges offering a spacious and relaxing ambience whilst providing panoramic views. The Hurtigruten fleet vary in size and facilities, from their smallest ship carrying just 340 guests, to their largest carrying 1,000. During 2013, Reader Offers Ltd (the largest and most successful UK retailer of Hurtigruten voyages) is offering four unique opportunities to visit Norway through the seasons.

your cabin window. Autumn is definitely for those who revel in a more relaxing and chilled out holiday. The colour change across the landscapes is simply delightful, with hues of red, orange and yellow reminiscent of fall in New England. It is now that you can start to see the sprinkling of the first snows across the highest peaks, and there’s a real sense of expectation across the natural environment. That expectation can also be felt on board, as you find yourself staring out of the window to catch a glimpse of the early Aurora Borealis.

Just as spring leads to summer and summer to autumn, autumn leads to winter, with the sun dipping low on the horizon, and north of the Arctic Circle it can even be below the horizon. This creates another captivating and eerie light, perfect for capturing yet another perspective on the ever changing landscape and driving more people to visit in hope of catching sight of nature’s most impressive light show.I have been exceptionally lucky with my travels to Norway, having seen the Northern Lights on a couple of different occasions, however, there are no guarantees that you will see it, as being a feat of Mother Nature, you never know when it will appear, and you never know when visibility will be good enough. That said, I feel you have the best chance possible by being out at sea, with artificial light being a distant memory. That, and the fact that the Captain almost chases the possibility of a sighting as we continue our course. The Northern Lights are by no means the only reason to visit during the winter months, with a host of other spectacles to enjoy. Snow experiences abound including the possibility of staying in a snow hotel, dog sledding, authentic Lapland experiences and so much more.I can’t wait for my next opportunity to visit Norway, and Hurtigruten is always my first choice.

cruise lines, but are virtually unknown.Keeping a firm grasp on their historical prowess, Hurtigruten still stop at all 34 ports of their original trading route, giving you the opportunity to explore remote communities and isolated isles left untouched by other ships, making the most of the stunning scenery on offer, every step of the way. This authentic offering really appeals to me as I tend to opt for an experience where I really get to know the true destination I am visiting. I love interacting with local people, trying local delicacies, spotting indigenous wildlife, and really feeling like I have experienced the country, rather than just viewing it from afar through a window. I want an adventure, something more than a traditional cruise, and this is definitely something that is on offer with Hurtigruten. The on board experience is very relaxed, very friendly, and very welcoming. Formalities aside, there is no dress code for dinner, nor are there organised Broadway-style shows or entertainment offerings. The emphasis here is on the constantly entertaining and magnificent scenery that

winter, primarily for the chance to witness the Northern Lights, but also to enjoy the blissful serenity of seeing the coastline covered in snow. However, having now seen how beautiful it is in all four seasons, spring and summer now come very close in my choice of when to go.Springtime offers a glimpse of sunshine, warming the ground, bringing plants to life, and it is as if the landscape is waking from its winter hibernation. Spring melts into summer as the sun sits higher in the sky, and travelling beyond the Arctic Circle gives way to another of Mother Nature’s phenomena, the Midnight Sun. It gives a rather surreal aspect to the voyage, with the sun permanently hanging overhead, and as such, time really does become an abstract concept. Naturally, it does mean that you can get a lot more from your holiday, enabling you to make the most of what Norway has to offer. The constant ‘daylight’ allows you to see more, explore more and immerse yourself more, by day and by night. As a newcomer to this I often chuckled to myself as I tiptoed round the well lit streets of our ports of call while everyone else was sound asleep. It also gives you the opportunity to join the locals for a wonderful midnight concert in Tromsø’s Arctic Cathedral as part of an optional excursion.Autumn is totally different again, with the sun giving way to dark nights, and makes for a very cosy experience as you watch the sun fade from

Fares start from just £1,299pp, representing great value for the impressive distance you’ll travel. They’ve also included their signature special touches (depending on which cabin grade and voyage you choose) such as on board spend of up to £140 and “bottomless” tea and coffee throughout your voyage. Deciding to take a wonderful

journey to Norway is the easy part, what’s slightly

more difficult, is deciding which season to see it in.Whenever you decide to go, you will be delighted. My

favourite time of year to travel has

always been

• A must eat - try the delicious “skillingsboller” cinnamon buns whilst in Bergen.

• If you have time, take the Floibanen Funicular to the top of Mount Floyen for magnificent vistas and photo opportunities of Bergen.

• Spectacular seasonal differences – see the Northern Lights during winter, and the Midnight Sun during summer.

• Make sure you take the optional excursion to the North Cape and find yourself literally on top of the world at Europe’s most northerly point.

• Don’t forget to pack: good walking boots or shoes; a warm woolly hat; an umbrella (just in case); clothes that can be worn in layers; sunglasses; and an eye mask for when you have trouble sleeping at night through the summer months.

On Track for Some Luxury

Everybody, at one stage or another, deserves some luxury, and in a world where the term luxury is used almost indiscriminately, finding an experience which actually defines the word is sometimes more difficult than you would have thought. However, luxury is certainly something that will be dispensed in huge amounts on Reader Offers Ltd’s forthcoming voyage from Monte Carlo to Venice with Silversea, and an iconic rail journey on the magnificent Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Setting off from London’s

sufficient time to do some exploring, people watching or even just lazing on a glorious Côte d’Azur beach in preparation for your impending cruise.

Another seamless transfer will take you to glitzy Monte Carlo, and the 6H Silver Spirit, the newest vessel in the Silversea family, with very impressive credentials including a huge on board spa and the largest suites in the fleet. Silversea is renowned for its attention to detail, and the crew offer genuine hospitality and the utmost in professional service, providing an incomparable level of personalised attention. The cruise itinerary will see you sailing out of Monte Carlo to Rome’s Civitavecchia port. We have visited Rome on numerous occasions in the past, so can speak with some authority. Rome does have a lot to experience, historical and

red carpet treatment with all the trimmings. The Venice Simplon-Orient-Express prides itself on the level of service it offers, so much so that it has earned itself a legendary reputation, delivering you in resplendent style.Travelling on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is as captivating as the train itself. Take time to enjoy the privacy afforded by your exclusive compartment where your personal steward will attend to your every need. Upon returning from an immaculate silver service, four-course dinner in the evening, you’ll find your compartment converted into sleeping quarters, turned down and ready for a blissful night’s sleep. The train winds its way through central Europe, affording ever-changing panoramas unfolding before your eyes, and is reminiscent of travel from a bygone era of unmatched elegance, and from my experience, few, if any, travel experiences can compete with the romance and luxury of the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. I’m sure it has been said countless times, but the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express really is an experience of a lifetime, and the attention to detail in both the service and accommodation sets it in a league of its own.Upon arrival at Calais, there is another transfer through the Channel Tunnel, taking you to Folkestone where you will board the British Pullman for the final leg of your epic journey, to London’s Victoria station. Complementing the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express experience, the British Pullman is vintage luxury at its best, and a perfect finale to the most magnificent and memorable journey. If you like to treat yourself to the best, you simply cannot trump this superb iconic offering from Reader Offers Ltd.

dedicated Eurostar terminal at St. Pancras station is a very quick, easy and relaxed check-in experience, which should provide you with about half an hour on the concourse before the train departs. This will give you plenty of time to indulge in a Champagne tipple at Searcy’s, which boasts the longest Champagne bar in Europe, before boarding the train.Gliding through the countryside in 1st class is a relaxing pleasure, and the rail journey to France only takes an hour or two. Upon arrival, there is a seamless exchange over to the high-speed TGV train to continue the journey down to Nice, whereupon there is another (very brief) transfer to the superb 5H Negresco Hotel for your two night stay. We have stayed at the Negresco on a previous holiday, and know how wonderful and unique an experience it is. Full of luxurious opulence,

accompanied by attentive staff who almost

guarantee to make you feel like royalty,

something I have no objection to!

A couple of days in Nice is ample, enabling

sip of limoncello (a locally-made lemon liqueur) whilst watching the world go by.The cruise itinerary includes a day at sea, giving you time to spend indulgently pampering yourself, relaxing and enjoying the attentive and personalised service. For a really special treat, make sure you book yourself in for a warm stone massage at the Spa. Just one of the many options for using your on board spend. This voyage also takes you to Corfu with its stunning olive groves and cypress trees, the Croatian ports of Dubrovnik (known as the Pearl of the Adriatic) with its magnificent marble streets and baroque architecture, and Zadar with its Romanesque churches and stunning location surrounded by several hundred small islands and crystal clear waters.Venice is the final destination for the cruise aspect of this holiday, and Reader Offers Ltd have included yet another hotel stay here for two nights at the acclaimed 5H Hilton Molino Stucky Hotel on Giudecca Island in Italy’s Venetian Lagoon, which affords some dramatic panoramic views of Venice from across the water. You will have plenty of time here to explore what must be one of the most interesting and lovely cities in the world, full of romantic charm. Why not take a gondola ride, and walk over the infamous Bridge of Sighs? There is an almost endless amount of artistic masterpieces to see, and photo opportunities at every corner.Your stay in Venice however, is the precursor for what must be the highlight of the entire journey, a ride back to the UK on the iconic Venice Simplon-Orient-Express. Checking out of the hotel, you will be transferred to Venice’s Santa Lucia station to be greeted by the immaculately presented uniformed staff and

modern, so if you haven’t been there before, our advice would be to do some research prior to departing. That way you can ensure you get to see everything that you want in the time you have available. It goes without saying that the Colosseum, St.Peter’s Basilica and the Trevi Fountain are amongst our previous highlights and well worth a visit.Sorrento, is the next port of call, located on Italy’s Amalfi coast, overlooking the Bay of Naples, and is a tourist hotspot and for good reason. Complemented by the beautiful architecture and scenic location, it’s a great place to sit at a local café and enjoy a

Travel-lovers Alan Greenwich and his wife Maria prepare to experience the ultimate combination of luxury with the iconic Venice Simplon-Orient-Express and 6H Silversea Cruises.

Travelling on the Venice Simplon-Orient-Express is as captivating as the train itself.

Like most, I have a very lengthy travel wish list and having ticked off many destinations including Alaska, The Caribbean and the Far East, my wife and I have always wanted to visit the stunning islands of the South Pacific. Opportunity knocks, and with the brand new Hawaii and South Pacific voyage from Reader Offers Ltd now available, we are grabbing the chance to visit this far flung destination with both hands. Not only does the itinerary on Holland America Line’s ms Statendam meet all our destination requirements, Reader Offers Ltd have also included a fantastic two night stay in San Diego prior to joining our ship, along with some other really attractive features such as stateroom upgrades and on board spend, which Lucinda is already earmarking for some luxurious treatments in ms

includes a number of days at sea, days to enjoy the resplendent ship with all of her wonderful amenities. Holland America Line’s ships are considered to be mid-sized, which means there are fewer guests on board, resulting in a sense of space that you don’t often find. The ships are complemented by opulent interiors which give you a feeling of refined elegance presented in a relaxed but inviting atmosphere. Very popular with Reader Offers Ltd clients, this wonderful line has also introduced their Signature of Excellence programme, which is constantly adding enhancements to their fleet offering, including dramatic new public areas, stateroom upgrades as well as an expanding on board enrichment programme. Add this to the already superb levels of service and five-star dining, making

from sport fishing to snorkelling.Leaving the islands of Hawaii behind you, and sailing across the International Date Line, the next port of call is Christmas Island in the small island group of Kiribati. Not exposed to heavy tourism, you can experience a country in almost a totally natural state, where nothing fast happens. Kiribati (pronounced ‘Kiri-bas’) comprises of 33 coral atolls, most of which are surrounded by turquoise lagoons and are for the most part, uninhabited. The majority are very low lying, and as such, may not be around for too long with

rising ocean levels. So, see them while you can!

Sailing again across the International Date Line,

and then the Equator, you will next stop at the idyllic island of Bora

Bora in French Polynesia’s Society Islands. Primarily the haunt of honeymooners

and the extremely wealthy, Bora Bora

offers majestic scenery by way of an extinct volcano with two peaks rising out of a dream-like lagoon, surrounded by its own barrier reef. There is little to do here other than

spoil oneself, and indulge in nature’s glory. Perfect white

sands give way to emerald

Statendam’s Greenhouse Spa.San Diego is reputed to have the best and most consistent weather on earth, and has a gentle laid-back pace, ideal preparation for the luxurious cruise to Hawaii and the South Pacific. Two nights is the perfect amount of time to see some of San Diego’s tourist attractions. We’ve been recommend to visit the San Diego zoo and SeaWorld along with the historic district of Old Town at the foot of Mission Valley.Reader Offers Ltd include and pre-book all transfers, which is very reassuring as well as providing a seamless holiday experience, and in that vein, you will be transferred to the port from the hotel in San Diego to embark the magnificent 5H ms Statendam to set sail. This is an epic voyage which

ms Statendam the perfect accompaniment to this dazzling itinerary.Aloha! The first port of call is Honolulu, the capital of Hawaii, and focal point of the classic TV series – Hawaii Five-O. Honolulu has an envious position overlooking the Pacific Ocean, and offers visitors plenty of choice when it comes to activities and things to experience, from famed Waikiki Beach, to the memorials at historic Pearl Harbour, to the natural beauty of the dramatic volcanic scenery that typifies the island chain. The itinerary gives you an overnight stay on board in port, so you can not only experience Honolulu and its locale through the day, but also into the night and early hours, should you desire.

The voyage continues through the archipelago to Lahaina, situated on the popular island of Maui. Lahaina offers wonderful beaches, great eateries and a variety of water-based activities. During the daytime most of the activity can be found on the beaches of Kaanapali.Hilo on the other hand is almost a world away. Situated on the Big Island, Hilo is considered to be one of the best starting points to visit the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park – a World Heritage site and home to the constantly erupting Kilauea Volcano, and thousands of archaeological features including temple sites, petroglyph fields and village complexes. Waterfalls are in plentiful supply, and two of the best are Akaka Falls and Rainbow Falls, the latter of which is very easily accessed, and is also wheelchair friendly.Kona, the next stop on the voyage is also located on the Big Island, at the foot of the Hualalai Volcano, and is the main production area for Hawaiian coffee. Kona also sits in a rain shadow, as the looming mountains block northeasterly trade winds, giving it more than 300 days of annual sunshine, ideal for enjoying the plethora of water-based activites that Kona offers,

waters, while lush tropical slopes and valleys blossom with hibiscus. Heaven on earth? Most likely, and with an overnight stay on board you have plenty of time to decide for yourself.

Ms Statendam’s South Pacific experience will deliver you to a number of French Polynesia’s islands including the less-travelled Raiatea, offering an unspoiled experience; Tahiti and her capital city Papeete, which is shrouded in legend and has been the central character in many stories of travel, romance and intrigue; naturally beautiful and typically Polynesian Moorea; the large (second largest in the world) atoll of Rangiroa with its pearl farms and simple beach life; and varied Nuku Hiva in the Marquesas archipelago with its cliffs, waterfalls and picture perfect bays.

All of the South Pacific islands offer unmatched beauty, and their remote location means that on the whole, they are not teeming with tourists, providing an almost unique cruising experience, which may explain why Reader Offers Ltd have already witnessed significant interest in this holiday. The prospect of experiencing out-of-this-world heavenly destinations and a superbly appointed luxury cruise ship, for us, is the cruise holiday we have been waiting for!

Adventure in the AmazonBrian King reveals the spectacular natural wonders of the Amazon Basin on this epic voyage on board Cruise & Maritime’s Marco Polo

• Take a tour to the “Meeting of the Waters” from Manaus, and witness two different coloured rivers flowing side by side, but not mixing.

• While in Manaus, try to see the Mercado Adolfo Lisboa for an array of Amazon food products and local handicrafts.

• Meat lovers should go to Churrascaria Bufalo in Manaus to experience a truly Brazilian meat feast, and eat as much as you can!

• As the name suggests, it rains daily for an hour or two in the rain forest, so a waterproof jacket or poncho is very handy.

• Very handy things to take with:- binoculars; a hat; an umbrella; sunscreen; a torch (for seeing caiman – a species of crocodile native to South & Central America – at night time).

Expert tips:Since I was young, I have had a desire to travel and experience first-hand, Mother Nature at her finest, and as an appreciator of wildlife and all things nature, a cruise to the Amazon was something I have long fantasised over. Added to this, the plethora of nature programmes on television highlighting this now-accessible part of the world has inspired a desire in me to walk in David Attenborough’s (and the other countless naturalists) footsteps, and experience the most amazing and diverse rain forest on Earth. This feeling was magnified when I read Gabriel Garcia Marquez’s classic novel – One Hundred Years of Solitude. Set in the dense Amazon, it tracks the comings and goings of an indigenous tribe called the Buendias, and how they survived and thrived in seclusion, in an environment that was totally unknown to the western world. Marquez was able to conjure up images that made me want to pack my bags and experience it for myself. With his incredible tale still fresh in my mind, and with eager anticipation, my next major adventure loomed – a Cruise & Maritime voyage to the spectacular Amazon.Marco Polo is returning to the Amazon in 2014, and Reader Offers Ltd are offering this wonderful trip including, as always, some great early booking benefits such as a cabin upgrade, up to £350 on board spend and half price car parking, which saves you £126. Plus, when you book whilst their special promotion is on, you can save up to £5,100 on your total price too! In my hand luggage I had a huge checklist of animals that I would love to encounter – river otters, pink river dolphins, manatees, and the piraracu – a giant air-breathing fish found nowhere else on Earth. I was realistically

aware that I wasn’t going to see every creature I dreamed of, partially due to their shyness or rarity, or that they are nocturnal and not easily spotted.

Forgetting about the sights, the sounds reassure you that animals are all out there somewhere. The Amazon is renowned for its howler monkeys whose hoots and howls, as their name suggests, start as soon as the sun rises, and although slightly reclusive it is possible to see the odd fellow swinging amongst the forest canopy and also some of the colourful birdlife that is abundant in the rain forest, such as toucans, macaws and hornbills. The animal and bird noises at times can be intense and doesn’t seem to relent at night time, with the bird and monkey calls being replaced by the buzz, crick and chirp of the countless insects. I must say at this stage that I wouldn’t let this deter you, as the only insect that I got a close and personal encounter with on the ship was a passing butterfly! The Amazon is also home to a large number of indigenous people living throughout the rain forest, but they can be extremely reclusive. It is possible however, to interact

with the Caboclo communities that populate the river

banks and the children wave as you sail by.

By far the largest community within the rainforest can be found at the city of Manaus - a bizarre and incongruous pocket of urbanity located in the middle of the jungle, and a port for ocean vessels that is some 1,500km from the ocean. The city

itself has some genuinely rewarding sights, and a fortunate overnight stay on board the ship lends itself to

discovering what this strange city has to offer. I took a tour to the “Meeting of the Waters” where the Amazon and the Rio Negro flow alongside each other creating a natural phenomenon seen nowhere else. The waters of the Rio Negro are dark, whilst the Amazon is much lighter in colour, and they don’t appear to mix, creating a fascinating sight. Manaus is the furthest up the river that we travelled, so an about turn took the Marco Polo downstream, taking in new and interesting Amazon ports of call such as Parintins, Alter do Chão, Almeirim and Santana.Sailing out of the Amazon Delta the voyage charts the northern coast of South America before it peels off towards the tropical islands of the Caribbean including St.Vincent, St. Lucia and Barbados, before heading back to the UK via The Azores.Just to blow your mind, here are some interesting facts I picked up on my 2012 voyage: - Beginning in the Peruvian Andes, the mighty Amazon winds its way east for over 4,000 miles to Belem, located on Brazil’s Atlantic coast, where it can be as much as 300 miles across (depending upon season). Twice the size of India, and spanning eight different South American countries, the Amazon Basin is vast, and the river itself, which can be as much as 40km across at its highest level, flows with more water than the next eight largest rivers on the planet put together. Statistics which, until you see it for yourself, appear to be unquantifiable! The river is massive and unrelenting, but is as much a living thing as the plants and animals that depend upon it. Marco Polo is the perfect accompaniment to your trip - small enough to access the remote communities throughout the Amazon region, but large enough to make light work of the transatlantic aspect of the voyage. Marco Polo houses a wide range of public facilities, including the very impressive Waldorf Restaurant and the

stylish Marco’s Bistro. Food is top notch as you would expect and the service is just as fine – the head barman in the Columbus Lounge didn’t take long to remember my favourite drink. The Cruise & Maritime experience is that of a more traditional and intimate cruise, and with Marco Polo being “child free” you can enjoy the pleasures of cruising in the company of adult passengers only, even during

the school holidays.

Another fantastic benefit, which we also experienced, is the exceptionally generous on board spend. My wife made short work of this by enjoying a range of spa and massage treatments at the Jade Wellness Centre, but you can choose to spend this on board Marco Polo as you wish and even use it towards some of the wonderful optional excursions on offer.

On top of this were other amazing added value features such as half price car parking in the UK, and a huge saving on the listed price.

Reader Offers Ltd also gave me the ability to earn a significant number of Cruise Miles which I will no doubt redeem on a future cruise. The only question is where will I want to sail to next?

A World of Opportunities to DiscoverThe chance to visit an old friend in some of my favourite destinations is an opportunity too good to resist, says Margaret Ray, eagerly anticipating her journey from Dubai to Hong Kong aboard Balmoral in 2014.Cruising with Fred. Olsen is a delightful experience, totally understated in every way, exceptionally friendly and welcoming, and a real sight for sore eyes. Over the years I have cruised with Fred. Olsen many times, and experienced every ship in their fleet. My children think that makes me a bit fanatical, but when you find something as good as Fred, it’s hard to let go.For my next exotic adventure, I will be sailing from Dubai to Hong Kong on one of their World Cruise sectors. Flying in to Dubai from London takes about 7 hours, and is long enough to know that you are going somewhere exciting, but short enough to be pleasantly comfortable. Upon arrival in Dubai, we will be greeted and transferred to the 4H Arabian Courtyard Hotel for a two night stay. The hotel occupies an ideal location in old Dubai, just a stone’s throw from the historical, cultural and shopping attractions, giving plenty of options for discovering Dubai. On this particular holiday, Reader Offers Ltd are not only including hotel stays, but also all the overseas transfers, making for a seamless holiday experience, which I find reassuring and comforting as a solo traveller. Another added bonus is the fact I can tot up almost 6,000 Cruise Miles (as I’m booking an outside cabin) which will enable me to treat myself when I arrange my summer break with Reader Offers Ltd shortly after I return. Having sailed on

and ancient bazaars, and modernity, plus it also offers some of the finest dining in all India. At Mumbai Harbour you’ll find the Gateway of India, an arch built to commemorate the 1911 royal visit of King George V. These days, it is a favourite gathering spot for locals, and possibly the best place for doing some people watching. This itinerary includes an overnight stay on board, so there’s plenty of time to explore, or just while away the hours on the famous Chowpatty Beach.Beach lovers like me will be delighted by Cochin, which is the next port of call, and has some of the best beaches in the Kerala area, including the very special Fort Kochi beach, where you can witness the very unusual Chinese fishing nets, apparently brought from the court of Chinese emperor, Kublai Khan. However, one of the most compelling sights is the Cochin Backwaters, with coconut trees lining a pellucid lake for kilometres at a stretch.Sailing on, the next stop is at Colombo, Sri Lanka’s biggest city and major port. There is a considerable colonial heritage which draws tourists in their hundreds, plus fine dining and plenty of shopping opportunities. There is a spectacular overnight excursion available from Colombo to Kandy, declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1988, and home to the unique Temple of the Tooth Relic, considered to be the most sacred place in the Buddhist world.Another few days at sea to make the most of Balmoral’s superb facilities, and I’ll arrive in Yangon, capital city of Myanmar, formerly known as Burma, and a place only just emerging as a tourist destination. Understandably, Yangon is now considered to be one of the “hottest” destinations to visit, and the itinerary includes a two night stay on board in port, maximising your experience. Be sure to visit the Shwedagon Pagoda. This cone-shaped Buddhist monument is covered

one of the most engaging and unexpectedly beautiful urban spectacles on Earth, and this cruise holiday not only gives you an overnight stay on board, but also an extended two night hotel stay in the 4H Novotel, allowing time to really be immersed in the local culture and get to grips with the huge amount of things to see and do.After two vibrant nights in one of my favourite cities, and a whole month cruising some of my others, I’ll bid another (sad) farewell to Balmoral and the Fred. Olsen crew, but I know that I’ll be returning home with spring to look forward to, as well as many many more Fred. Olsen Cruises on which I can spend my Cruise Miles.

example of the region’s economic success, plus it is also one of the safest places to visit in the world. But best of all is that you will be totally spoilt for choice when it comes to things to see and do, including some amazing shopping experiences in the multitude of malls and shopping complexes. The final port of call, (and I’m pleased to say not the end of the trip) is the visually stunning city of Hong Kong, and for me, a contender for one of the most interesting destinations in the world. From the high-rise modern skyscrapers to colonial remnants to the picturesque waterfront facing Kowloon, located across the harbour. With its mix of Eastern and Western influences, Hong Kong can be

in solid gold, rises approximately 325 feet, and is one of the most famous and aesthetically appealing buildings in Yangon.Singapore is the next destination on this epic journey, with its stunning skyline filled with ambitious architectural projects. The city is currently thriving as a culinary capital with a deluge of high-class and high-quality restaurants, with huge variety from Asian fusion to traditional Western cuisine. The city is also gaining a reputation for the new generation of recently constructed hotels, in particular the Marina Bay Sands hotel, whose open-air swimming pool is located on the 55th floor!Singapore is a cultural melting pot, and also a dazzling

• Don’t leave home without a sun hat, sunglasses and some high factor sun cream.

• For some of the best Indian cuisine in Mumbai, and for a superb atmosphere, try out a Peshawari restaurant and enjoy your meal prepared in a traditional Tandoor oven.

• For a spiritually uplifting and mystical experience make sure you visit the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy, Sri Lanka

• Once the historic seat of Malay royalty in Singapore, Kampong Glam is a golden ethnic enclave, well worth exploring for its depth of architecture, exotic ornaments and palatable pleasures.

• A must do experience, take the funicular up Victoria Peak for the most dramatic photo opportunities Hong Kong has to offer, and stop off at the Café Deco while you are there.

Balmoral previously, I am exceptionally familiar with the experience, and I’m looking forward to reacquainting myself with some of the crew that will no doubt remember me from those sailings. I am also looking forward to enjoying the spectacular food on offer, which I feel is not mentioned enough (it really is superb, and amongst the best food I have experienced at sea) and the very special Fred. Olsen home-from-home feel.

The first destination on the itinerary is Muscat in the Sultanate of Oman. Muscat is almost at the opposite end of the spectrum from Dubai. You won’t find high rise skyscrapers. Although it is a bustling city, the architecture is rather uniform and traditional, not to mention spotlessly clean. The old walled city is beautiful and perfectly framed by the twin fortresses of Jalai and Mirani, where the Sultan has his palace. After a couple of days at sea enjoying the amenities on board Balmoral, the next stop is at Mumbai (formerly known as Bombay), on India’s west coast. Mumbai is a heady mix of hustle

and bustle, colonial relics

You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to things to see and do.
