Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect Christ’s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the body and blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to re-flect His love, mercy and forgiveness to others. When we are grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through us because we are made in God’s image.
Join us Tuesdays after Mass during the summer for movies and discussion! The movies will take place at 9:30am
following Mass. Anyone is welcome to come to any and all of the movies. The movies are not a series, so come to
any! There will be different videos each time. Come and enjoy!
MESSAGE FROM MONSIGNOR—LAUDATO SI (Paragraphs 204-208)
An important observation of Pope Francis is that a major source of selfishness and greed is a sense of
emptiness because of instability and uncertainty. People try to fill their inner emptiness with things to
buy, own or consume. We lose the sense of the common good which can lead to violence and mutu-
al destruction. Francis sees hope that although humans are capable of the worst, they can also
choose what is good. We can respond to God's grace deep in our hearts. A change in our lifestyles
as consumers can influence the market. As he quotes Pope Benedict XVI: "Purchasing is always a mor-
al - and not simply an economic - act." He encourages us to go outside of ourselves to be aware of
our brothers and sisters and the environment. In this way we can change our lifestyles and society it-
self.
204. The current global situation engenders a feeling of instability and uncertainty, which in turn be-
comes "a seedbed for collective selfishness".[145] When people become self-centered and self-
enclosed, their greed increases. The emptier a person's heart is, the more he or she needs things to
buy, own and consume. It becomes almost impossible to accept the limits imposed by reality. In this
horizon, a genuine sense of the common good also disappears. As these attitudes become more
widespread, social norms are respected only to the extent that they do not clash with personal needs.
So our concern cannot be limited merely to the threat of extreme weather events, but must also ex-
tend to the catastrophic consequences of social unrest. Obsession with a consumerist lifestyle, above
all when few people are capable of maintaining it, can only lead to violence and mutual destruction.
205. Yet all is not lost. Human beings, while capable of the worst, are also capable of rising above
themselves, choosing again what is good, and making a new start, despite their mental and social
conditioning. We are able to take an honest look at ourselves, to acknowledge our deep dissatisfac-
tion, and to embark on new paths to authentic freedom. No system can completely suppress our
openness to what is good, true and beautiful, or our God-given ability to respond to his grace at work
deep in our hearts. I appeal to everyone throughout the world not to forget this dignity which is ours.
No one has the right to take it from us.
206. A change in lifestyle could bring healthy pressure to bear on those who wield political, economic
and social power. This is what consumer movements accomplish by boycotting certain products. They
prove successful in changing the way businesses operate, forcing them to consider their environmental
footprint and their patterns of production. When social pressure affects their earnings, businesses clear-
ly have to find ways to produce differently. This shows us the great need for a sense of social responsi-
bility on the part of consumers. "Purchasing is always a moral - and not simply economic - act".[146]
Today, in a word, "the issue of environmental degradation challenges us to examine our lifestyle".[147]
207. The Earth Charter asked us to leave behind a period of self-destruction and make a new start, but
we have not as yet developed a universal awareness needed to achieve this. Here, I would echo that
courageous challenge: "As never before in history, common destiny beckons us to seek a new begin-
ning... Let ours be a time remembered for the awakening of a new reverence for life, the firm resolve
to achieve sustainability, the quickening of the struggle for justice and peace, and the joyful celebra-
tion of life".[148]
208. We are always capable of going out of ourselves towards the other. Unless we do this, other crea-
tures will not be recognized for their true worth; we are unconcerned about caring for things for the
sake of others; we fail to set limits on ourselves in order to avoid the suffering of others or the deteriora-
tion of our surroundings. Disinterested concern for others, and the rejection of every form of self-
centeredness and self-absorption, are essential if we truly wish to care for our brothers and sisters and
for the natural environment. These attitudes also attune us to the moral imperative of assessing the im-
pact of our every action and personal decision on the world around us. If we can overcome individu-
alism, we will truly be able to develop a different lifestyle and bring about significant changes in socie-
ty.

Walkers and Runners,
Mark your calendars for Saturday, October 7th
for the 2017 FirstChoice
Clinic’s LIFEWALK. We are so excited to bring this event to the Fargo Moor-
head area again.
This year we are striving to get hundreds of walkers and runners to partici-
pate in this fundraising event. Giving everyone the opportunity to help
moms and babies in our community by raising awareness of the services of
FirstChoice and also to raise funds for the clinic, so we continue our ser-
vices to our clients at no charge.
We need walk liaisons to speak to their church congregations and to family
and friend to get them behind this great event. If you would like someone
from FirstChoice to come speak at your church or group event, please con-
tact me and we will make it happen. You will be able to set up your own
walk page and reach out the those in your family, work, church and com-
munity and ask them to support you or join you.
What a great way to start the weekend by bringing your family and friends
to the Red River Zoo and walking an easy 2 miles and joining others in this
worthwhile cause.
Registration fee is only $25 (ages 16 and up). Individuals raising $75 or
more (including registration fee) receive a LIFEWALK t-shirt.
Let’s get started early so we can make this the best LIFEWALK ever. Contact
me at 701-237-5902 to be a LifeWalk Liaison.
The Feast of the Assumption of Mary is approaching on August 15. This is a Holy Day of Obligation when the Church
asks us to take a break from our routine and come to Mass to give glory to God for the gift of His mother. To make this
possible there will be a Mass on Monday Aug. 14 at 7:00 PM at St. Agnes. On Tuesday at Our Lady of Peace there will
be a 9:00 AM Mass and a 7:00 PM Mass. Also that week I will have a couple of meetings. St. Agnes Parish Council will
follow the Mass Monday at St. Agnes. On Wednesday Aug. 16, 7 PM will be the Finance Council for Our Lady of Peace.
