STATEWIDE – To combat smoke-freeair laws, increases in cigarette tax and de-creases in cigarette smoking rates, tobaccocompanies are coming out with newproducts to try to hook new users. Theseproducts are the newest challenge fromthe tobacco industry: flavored and smoke-less tobacco products.“The tobacco industry is investing

heavily in alternative smokeless tobaccoproducts and flavored tobacco in order torespond to increasing regulations andsmoke-free air laws,” said Mary Boe,Western Wisconsin Working for Tobacco-Free Living Coalition coordinator. “Theseproducts are marketed to get around thelaws and entice newer, younger users.”The alternative products include fla-

vored cigars and chewing tobacco (whichare taxed at a lower rate than cigarettes),dissolvable tobacco and “snus”, which arespit less tobacco pouches that users place

under their upper lip. Dissolvable tobaccocomes in pellet forms, which resemble abreath mint, and strips, which are a dis-solvable tobacco film strip for the tongue.The tobacco industry promotes these

new tobacco products as less-dangerousalternatives to smoking and marketsproducts in kid-friendly flavors like berryblend, peach, sweet strawberry, red wineand watermelon. With these new prod-ucts in stores, health professionals say it’smore important than ever to prevent to-bacco sales to minors.Free tobacco sales training and certifi-
