From the Gonzales Garden ClubFrom the Gonzales Garden Club
The garden club had their second virtual meeting on October 7 in anticipation of autumn activities. MembersBrenda Bertrand, JanisD’Benedetto and Ellen Posey presented colorful horizontal-line arrangements.Civic Development ChairmanMary Jo Pohlig reported plansto coordinate with the city
maintenance department in refurbishing garden plots at theJambalaya Park and Kids Kove. The horticulture hint for thismonth is to plant chrysanthe-mums and marigolds to addcolor to your fall garden thennourish them weekly with awater-soluble fertilizer.
The featured topic of the daywas floral design with home garden findings. Membersnamed aspects of floral design
that interest them such as flowercolors, design shape, plant texture, vase selection and me-chanics components. MemberMarilyn Rice, a floral design veteran, presented groups ofplant material based on theirform and function in arrange-ments. To begin a flowerarrangement, basic mechanicsinclude a container conducive
to the design proportion, ameans of supportfor the plant material, andhelpful stabilizingaids. Florists'items for struc-tural support aresuch things as wetfoam, chickenwire, floral frogs, water tubes, stakes, pins, picks, and clay.
Marilyn demon-strated how to select flowers andfoliage based onthe line/struc-ture, shape/form,volume/mass,andproportion/filler
functions. She presented photosof floral designs in mass, horizontal, vertical, crescent, and S-curve styles while sharingdesign tips: coordinate the container color with flowercolor; contour the arrange-ment's shape and size to complement the anticipated display space; elevate thearrangement on a low pedestal;measure plant material to standone and one-half times theheight of the vase; use moss tocover mechanics. She encouraged members to collectnatural elements such as driftwood, gnarly branches,
lichen, stumps, pods, rocks andshells to embellish designs. Marilyn advocated, “Don’t beafraid to experiment. Get atheme or idea in your head andput something together. Sometimes it's a total failure, but sometimes it’s great!"
Marilyn has been an enthusiasticmember of the Gonzales Garden Club for 23 years, expressing, “It really means a lotto me. I love everyone in it.I’ve seen members pass away, great people, just nice people. I can’t imagine not being in it.”She asserted that the club has

Janis D’Benedetto used seasonal mums and filler flowers in a shallow bowl set on a pedestal to achieve this horizontalautumn arrangement.
Ellen Posey used yellow candlestick blooms and leaves withzinnias and plumbago to create this horizontal design.
Florists’ appliances displayed are floral frogs, tape, wire, water tubes, wood picks, pins, and dry and wet foamplus color wheel information.

In the spirit ofHalloween
There are some things in naturethat can be pretty spooky. Lookfor these creepy plants and insects around Ascension Parish.
Resurrection fern is a plant thatreturns from the dead, well atleast it appears to. This particularfern, Pleopeltis polypodioides, iscommonly found growing ontrees, fallen logs, stumps, andeven fence posts. Live oak, magnolia and cypress trees are afew of its hosts. During periods ofdry weather the fronds of the fernseems to wither and die. After arain the plant’s highly efficientvascular system begins to
circulate water and it quicklygreens back up, appearing to return from the dead. Resurrection fern is an epiphyticplant, meaning it depends on another plant for physical support, but not nutrition. It does not harmor take nutrients from its host.
Dodder weed, often referred to as strangle weed, hairweed orhellbine, is a unique parasiticplant. The leafless vine lackschlorophyll giving it a bright orange to yellow color. You mayspot it growing along roadsides or
in open fields. It can be problematic in some agronomicand horticulture settings. Dodderweed depends on its host for survival. It utilizes specializedstructures called haustoria to invade its hosts vascular tissue, stealing away nutrients and water. If left uncontrolled the twining vinecan completely cover its host, creating a dense mat, living up toits name strangle weed.
Dead man’s fingers is one thatwill stop you in your tracks. These finger-like mushrooms lookto be reaching out from theground, hoping to grab whoeverpasses by next. They are typically found at the base of
stressed and dying trees or in decaying mulch. They are a signof wood-decomposing fungi or thefungi that causes black root rot.Trees where dead man’s fingersare found should be carefully andcompletely removed to stop thespread of this fungal disease fromplant to plant.
In late summer you may noticetrees covered in fine webbing, giving your yard a just decoratedfor Halloween appearance. Thespooky webbing of bark lice oftencovers the trunk and branches ofcrape myrtles, oaks and otherhardwoods. These small, softbodied insects would mostly likelygo unnoticed if it weren’t for theirwebbing. The good news is barklice cause no harm to trees andare actually considered beneficial. The bark lice act like a tiny streetcleaning crew, feeding on thefungi, lichen and organic debrisfound on a tree’s bark. Protect YourFamily fromLong-term CareCosts Like everyone, you want to
remain physically and financiallyindependent throughout your life. But if you lose some of this freedom, the last thing you’dwant is to become a burden onyour family. How can you keepthis from happening?
First of all, you need to beaware of the risk. Someone turning 65 today has almost a 70 percent chance of eventuallyneeding some type of long-termcare, according to the U.S. Department of Health andHuman Services. Of course, thisdoesn’t necessarily mean thatyou face that 70 percent likelihood. In reality, you have either a zero percent chance ofrequiring long-term care (you’llnever need it) or a 100 percentchance (you’ll definitely need it).
Nonetheless, if you thinkyou’ve got that zero percentchance, you’re taking a gamble –and it could be a big one, because long-term care is expensive. The median annualcost for a private room in a nursing home is over $102,000,according to Genworth, an insurance company. Other long-term care services, such as those provided by a homehealth care aide, also don’t come cheaply.
Furthermore, you can’t counton Medicare paying all thesecosts – in fact, it would probablyonly cover a small portion of anursing home stay and provide
limited assistance for homehealth care. So, if you were financially unprepared for the expense of long-term care, theburden might fall on your lovedones. This could be a big financial challenge, in two ways.
First, if a family member had tobecome your caregiver, this individual might have to abandona career, or at least substantiallyreduce their working hours. Notonly would this result in a loss ofincome, but it could also lowerthe amounts that could be contributed to a 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan.
Second, if your family memberscouldn’t leave their jobs or cutback on their hours, or they weresimply unable to provide the typeof long-term care you need, theymight be forced to pay for a nursing home stay or homehealth care worker out of pocket. To avoid these outcomes, youhave a couple of options:
• Self-insure – You could conceivably “self-insure” againstthe costs of long-term care bydevoting a portion of your investment portfolio specificallyto this purpose. However, if atsome point you require admission to a nursing home, itmay require a significant commitment of your resources.
• Purchase protection – Over thepast decade or so, there’s beenan increase in the types of long-term care protection vehicles available. These instruments vary widely in costand in what they cover, but bychoosing a protection option, youmay greatly lower the financialrisk you might face. By consultingwith a financial professional, youshould be able to find anarrangement that’s appropriatefor your situation.
Preserving your financial independence and helping protect that of your family shouldbe a key financial goal. And youcan make progress toward accomplishing this by recognizing the potential cost of long-term care and takingsteps to deal with it.

Chronic pain is a widespread issue thatcontinues to be on the rise in our society. Medical intervention can sometimes effectively alleviate chronicpain for many people. But for manymore people, finding a long-term solution that takes a holistic approachto health and healing is proving to bemuch more successful.
Mindfulness is an approach to healingthat allows chronic pain sufferer to acknowledge their discomfort non-judgmentally instead of avoiding it.Modern research reveals that mindfulness practices for chronic paincan be an even more effective symptom-management tool thanpainkillers and other pharmaceuticals.
What Is Mindfulness? The core of the practice is to observethe mental loop that's on auto-play inthe logical thinking mind. By observingthis mental chatter, practitioners effectively dissolve any power it hasover their emotional or physical state. In essence, their practice allows themto move into the present moment asthe "observer" and simply noticewhat's happening in the mind andbody. This leads them to discover thatthey are not their thoughts and thattheir thoughts are just things.
Mindfulness ResearchTodayMindfulness sounds great in theoryand its thousands of years of existenceseem to validate it. However, for westerners used to science-based medicine, the benefits of mindfulness
for pain demand a more data-drivenexplanation.
Over the past several decades, scoresof investigations and clinical trials fromexperts at leading institutions haveshown that mindfulness meditation isbeneficial for psychological and physicalhealth. This is especially interesting regarding its effectiveness for chronic pain.
What Type of Conditions Can Mindfulness Help With? From the hundreds of studies that havebeen conducted over the years, it'sclear that mindfulness is a versatilepractice with benefits for emotional, physical, and mental conditions acrossthe spectrum. It may be a beneficialpractice for people suffering from virtually any condition associated withpain to help manage symptoms andimprove life quality.
Some of the conditions that mindfulness has been studied as atherapy for include tension headaches, back pain, arthritis, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, irritable bowel syndrome, psoriasis, diabetes, andheart disease.
Researchers are clear that mindfulnessmeditation appears to be most beneficial for chronic pain when looking at various studies' results. While it's not a cure, experts feel thatmindfulness is a safe, valuable form ofself-care accessible to everyone.
Tips for Practicing MindfulnessFor anyone interested in practicingmindfulness to help manage theirchronic pain, it's important to have a realistic understanding that mindfulness is by no means a quick fix.In fact, its delayed results are what appears to make it effective. This isperhaps why some people are hesitantto begin the practice. It takes time andcommitment, which can be in short
supply for busy people.
Despite this, there are ways to incorporate mindfulness into your dailyroutine that won't require immensesacrifice. Here are some tips on getting started:
1. Consistent Daily Practice:
Research has shown that just 20 minutes a day of mindfulness meditation practice is enough to improve chronic pain. Ideally, if you canschedule this at the same time and
place every day, it will help you stay ontrack. Mindfulness is called a "practice"for a reason. It requires a consistentdaily effort to notice any benefit.
2. Be Easy With Yourself:
Mindfulness, in its truest nature, is thepractice of non-judgment. Most peopleget distracted, fidget, or become boredif they're forced to sit still for 20 minutes. This is normal and not something to criticize yourself over. Go easy on yourself and rememberthat getting distracted by your thoughts is all part of the practice.
3. Start With Your Breath.
The simplest way to get started with amindfulness practice is by focusing onyour breath. Simply sitting still, closingyour eyes, and observing the inhale andexhale of your breath for 10 - 15 minutes a day will set you on your wayfor a longer, more in-depth practice
4. Work With a Teacher:
Many experts recommend workingwith a mindfulness teacher at first. This will ensure you're performing itcorrectly and getting the full benefit ofthe practice. There are numerous options on line as well.
5. Take back your quality of life bycombining mindfulness and relaxationpractices that can help you managechronic pain and live a more life ofmore freedom and fulfillment.

Understandingthe Veterans Pension On November 11th this year, ournation will celebrate VeteransDay: a day on which we honorthe sacrifice of the men andwomen who have bravely wornthe uniform of the United Statesof America. Despite their greatservice to our country, many veterans are unaware of some ofthe benefits that they or theirspouse may be entitled to receive. One of these benefits, the Aidand Attendance Pension, may beable to help some of our veteransease the burden of paying forlong term care – something thatis becoming increasingly important for World War II,Korea and Vietnam Veterans.
In 2020, single veterans can qualify for up to $1,912 permonth, married veterans canqualify for up to $2,266, and theSurviving Spouse of a Veterancan qualify for up to $1,230 per month. These amountschange each year.
"Aid and attendance" is a commonly used term for a little-known veterans' disability in-come. The official title of thisbenefit is "Pension." The reasonfor using "aid and attendance" torefer to Pension is that many veterans or their single survivingspouses can become eligible ifthey have a regular need for theaid and attendance of a caregiveror if they are housebound. Evidence of this need for caremust be certified by VA as a "rating." With a rating, certainveterans or their survivingspouses can now qualify for Pension.
The purpose of this benefit is toprovide supplemental income todisabled or older veterans whohave a low income or high medical costs. Pension is for warveterans who have disabilities thatare not connected to their active-duty service. Pension isprimarily intended for very lowincome veterans, but a special
provision in how Pension is calculated can allow veterans orsingle surviving spouses withhigh income to also receive thebenefit. This special provisionkicks in for veterans who haveongoing and expensive long term care costs.
Aid and Attendance Pension benefit can pay for qualifyinglong term care needs such as:
• Family members to provide home care
• Professional home care providers to come into your home
• Assisted Living or Adult Day services
• Nursing Home long term care• Home renovations for disability
The requirements to qualify forthis Pension include at least 90days of active military serviceswith at least one day of war-timeservices, permanent and total disability or 65+ receiving socialsecurity, having income that isless than maximum benefit, having no more than $129,094of assets, and a 3 year look backperiod for gifting assets.
If the veteran’s income exceedsthe Pension amount, there is usually no award given, however, income can be adjusted for unreimbursed medical expenses, and this allows veterans withhousehold incomes larger thanthe Pension amount to qualify for a monthly benefit.
If you have assets and a sizableincome, you will most likely needand benefit from the services of aprofessional knowledgeableabout veterans’ benefits concerning what you need to dobefore you submit an applicationto the VA for an award. It is extremely important that assetsthat might be gifted or convertedto income also meet Medicaidgifting rules in case the veteranor the surviving spouse may haveto apply for Medicaid. Before undertaking planning for long-term care, it is important toconsult with the professionalswho are well aware of the rulesand regulations regarding the different programs to ensure youdon’t unintentionally create additional problems for you andyour loved ones.

IT’S FALL YALL! And just like that, Fall has arrived in South Louisiana, andit just so happens to be my favorite season! I absolutelylove the falling leaves, the lackof humidity in the air, the reconnection to my favoritesweaters that I have storedaway for the past year, pullingout the knee boots, the firepitgatherings and most definitelythe hot cocoa that I tend toenjoy on crisp fall nights. Onething I will NOT partake in…is the overrated PUMPKINSPICE EVERYTHINGCRAZE…it is just incrediblyyucky and I have never understood the obsession… (I am a basic Café Latte kind of chick…but gimme that extrashot of espresso to go alongwith it, Lord knows I need thatextra boost of energy in mymornings)!
With Halloween right aroundthe corner, I wanted to AGAINmake it clear for all you fenceriders out there that Witcheson their “souped-up” broom-sticks isn’t the only thing flyingfast and furious these days…home sales have again escalated to an all time high inSeptember mainly due to continued low mortgage ratesas well as a rebounding andstrengthening labor market. That formula produces consumer confidence andwithin the housing market…homes are flying off the
“shelves” and home inventoryis extremely low! I havewatched me and several of myassociates get contracts on ournew listings in less than 3days…I am not kidding! I havealso recently experiencedbeing in the middle of writing a contract for a slow to decidebuyer…only to get a text fromthe listing agent that“SORRY…WE JUST GOT ACONTRACT AND HAVE ACCEPTED THE OFFER!”.
My advice to snatching up that dream home you have always wanted would be thefollowing…Do your researchand get pre-approved fromyour preferred lender…Have agreat and trusting relationshipwith your Realtor and makesure you are both on the samepage as to what you are looking for in a new home.Choose an aggressive Realtorwho is eager and willing to “putin the work” to get you intoyour home and under contractQUICKLY! These simple stepscould be the difference in yousnatching up that home of yourdreams or losing out at the lastminute! BE SMART!
Happy Café Latte Everything!

Many of you know that Ms.Myrtle passed away on August31, 2020. Eleven days later, her longtime sweet heart Mr.Richard Waguespack passed
away on September 11, 2020.The Waguespack’s missedtheir 71st Wedding Anniversaryby just two days. The St.Amant Gator Nation lost thestrongest couple to ever be apart of the St. Amant Gator Nation. Both Myrtle andRichard were very active in theSt. Amant Booster club for wellover 60 years, being selectedin the first ever St. Amant HighSchool Hall of Fame in 2019.
Myrtle & Richard lived everymoment, loving and caring forthe 22 sports at St. Amant HighSchool. We will miss themboth, and the thousands ofGator Nation lives they bothtouched so significantly overthe many years of their involvement with the St. AmantGator Program. When you sawMyrtle and Richard in public, you new they were the perfectrole model of what marriagewas suppose to be.
The Gator Nation Chain has been broken
We little knew the day thatGod was going to call both of your names.
In life we loved you both dearly,
In death we do the same.
It broke our hearts to lose both of you
But Myrtle & Richard youdidn’t go alone.
For part of our communitywent with you
The day God called you both home.
Both of you left us peaceful memories.
Your love is still our guide,And though we cannot see both of you
Both of you are always at ourGator Nation side.
Our Gator Nation chain is broken
and nothing will ever seem the same,
but as God calls us one by onethe Gator Nation chain will
link again.
Myrtle & Richard were thefounders of the annualCoaches meal that took placeevery year to honor all thecoaches at St. Amant HighSchool. The meal for manyyears was served at theirhome, but had to be eventuallymoved to a larger venue due tothe amount of coaches servingat St. Amant High School. TheWaguespack’s always believedthat our coaches should be re-warded for all they did for thechildren.
Myrtle & Richard Waguespacktouched the lives of countlessAscension residents and St.Amant Gator supporters. Myrtle & Richard light will always shine brightly and theirlove will always be felt here atSt. Amant High School. To theentire Waguespack family, asthe days and weeks pass, andas each and everyone of youreturn to life’s routine, may youcontinue to feel comforted bythe love and support of this entire Gator Nation for youmom and dad.
Gator Nation Mourns the loss of

No one ever spread more lovein one lifetime than Myrtle andRichard. Their lives were ablessing, their memory a treasure, they are loved beyond words and missed beyond measure.
As the Gators prepare for yetanother season, somehow itwon’t be the same without Ms.Myrtle & Mr. Richard pulling upand preparing to back in theirlong time Reserve Parkingspot and walking up to theirReserve seats they have heldon to for so many years. The
Gator Nation will miss both ofthem standing and cheeringand clapping no matter win orlose, they both just lovedeverything possible about the Gators.

Over the years I have tried invain to imitate the style of somegreat columnists including Mike Royko of Chicago, LewisGrizzard of Atlanta and DaveBerry of Miami.
Locally, I have always admiredSmiley Anders of the Advocatewho has survived for years byhaving his readers write the majority of his column for him.Brilliant is the word that comesto mind.
Recently, one of Smiley’sreaders suggested that we discard the horrific year of 2020on November 1 and be donewith it. I thought that was anexcellent idea-especially afterdiscussing it with my star-gazingwise men who frequent thePorch Light Grill. These magical Magi pointed out thatsince all this mess began aroundFriday the 13th (March) on afull moon and a time change, then quite possibly it would allend on Halloween night on afull moon when we moved theclocks back.
Voila-everything bad goneand a new beginning on AllSaints’ Day.
Hey, it made just as muchsense as anything else I’ve heardrecently.
Then I really got to thinkingabout the national electionsonly a few days after our new“New Year” and concluded thatsince we were starting over, wemight as well go ahead andmake drastic changes at all levelsof government. Now before youstart casting asparagus in my direction, a couple of points if I may.
I don’t care if you vote forTrump or Biden or some third-party candidate (as I havedone for the past few years) aslong as you cast a ballot. And Ican guarantee you one thing-Iwill never lose friends oversomething as crazy as politics aslong as you vote for somebody.
As one of my aforementionedwise men so astutely put it,“What’s more important rightnow in this country is not somuch who you vote for, buthow you treat others that voted
differently from you.”Amen, brother! But after carefully studying
how well our style of government has worked overthe past 50 years (canned laughter), I offer you the onlyplausible solution-a switch tobenevolent dictator which eliminates the Presidency, theCongress and the SupremeCourt. And, faithful readers, Ibelieve I have found the rightman for the job-me.
While others may be contentto confine themselves to running for such meaninglessoffices as President of theUnited States or U.S. Senator, I intend to go for the whole enchilada (an ethnic attempt toget the Latino vote) and gowhole hog or nothing (gives afolksy, down-home appearance)to win the only office that interests me-King of the World.
But as former governor JohnMcKeithen used to say in hisNorth Louisiana drawl, “I’mgonna need a little hep.”
First of all, we’ll need a musical anthem that the entireworld can identify with.
Remember when the Beatles didthe first world-wide broadcastvia satellite in 1968? In whatcan only be described as a strokeof genius, John Lennon chose“All You Need Is Love” as theone tune to perform. Thesong’s message came throughloud and clear in any language.
But since that one’s already been done, my regime’stheme song will be “Joy to theWorld”-not the Christmas carolbut the one made popular byThree Dog Night in the late‘60’s. Not only does the song-written by Hoyt Axtonwho went on to play Billy’s dadin “Gremlins”-promote hopeand happiness, it also supplies uswith a mascot for the campaign.
Everybody loves the hero ofthe song’s first verse- Jeremiahthe Bullfrog (appeal to animallovers) who enjoyed a taste ofwine every now and then. Andthe repetitious chorus wouldhave the entire world singingalong from Lower Slobbovia toRooster Poo, Arkansas.
I’m sure Three Dog Nightwould not be opposed to a revival of their classic although
I prefer a local version by NancyMarchand of Duplesssis.
Once our world-wide anthemis in place, I will then start toappoint my cabinet members. These will be extremely impor-tant because even when I amKing of the World, I intend tobe like Moses (biblical referenceto appeal to religious groups)and lean on my staff. So for myfirst appointee, I address aworld-wide problem on everyone’s mind right now…
Depression Despot- TonySoprano. With a little helpfrom this famous Jersey mobster, we should have theeconomy up and running againin no time.
Sure his popular series’ closingleft a lot to be desired. But youshould see Tony and his boys inaction when the closing involvesdebts to be collected.
Can you picture some fat catCEO from AIG or Enron sittingon his yacht in the Cayman Islands when suddenly there’s aknock at the door? Enter Tony,Paulie, Guido and few othermembers of the family wieldingLouisville Slugger baseball bats-the old models made of ashnot maple.
“We’re here to make you anoffer you can’t refuse,” beginsTony. “We are of the opinionthat youse should return the 90million dollar settlement you received to the taxpayers andnobody will get hurt. Otherwise, Paulie and Guidoand I are going to take a littlebatting practice on strategicparts of your body sorta likesome of my Vegas crew did toJoe Pesci in ‘Casino’.”
A few more stops like that andwe’ll be able to bail out notonly the USA but also severalEuropean countries and the cityof Katmandu.
Middle Eastern Mediator-Dr. Phil. Oprah’s favoriteproblem-solver would have noshortage of business in his firstassignment in Iraq.
But I am confident that in just a matter of days, the good
If I Were the King of the Worldby Bill Delaune

doctor would have the Shiitessinging, “Keep on the Sunniside…” the Sunnis readingMother Goose poetry to littlechildren about “Kurds andwhey” and the Kurds playing“Wheel of Fortune” while trying to buy a vowel from the Shiites.
Later, Dr. Phil will try toteach the Iraqis some old Jewishsongs like “Jew Believe inMagic” and will say cleverquotes like, “There has neverbeen a good war or a badpiece.” If his methods work, then we’ve cooled off one ofour hot spots in the planet. And if the natives get upset andbehead him, we have a martyrfor our cause.
Dr. Phil would have wanted itthat way.
Award-Winning Director ofImmigration, Clint Eastwood.A firm proponent of TeddyRoosevelt’s “Speak softly andcarry a big stick” policy, Eastwood’s “big stick” wasoften a .44 magnum-“the mostpowerful handgun known to man”.
His relationship with theMexican community dates backto the days of the “Fistful ofDollars” trilogy where hehelped solve a feud between twofamilies south of the Border bykilling every single person inboth families.
“There are the Rojos on oneside and the Baxters on theother side and me in the middle,” pointed out the astute compromiser.
In the sequel “A Few DollarsMore”, Eastwood again showedhis tact and diplomacy by infiltrating a Mexican gang, gaining their trust and thenkilling every single member forthe reward money.
The third installment-“TheGood, the Bad and the Ugly”saw Clint team up with a Mexican named Tuco for a veryprofitable partnership. Eastwood rewards Tuco at theend by leaving him balancedprecariously on a cross in agraveyard with a noose aroundhis neck.
If this isn’t the guy to workout better relations between usand our Mexican neighbors, Iwant you to tell me who is.
Gender General-Richard
“Kinky” Friedman. If youthink I’m overloading this cabinet with musicians, you’reprobably right. But remember, this gentleman received almost13 per cent of the vote in a gubernatorial race in the greatstate of Texas so he is well qualified to repair the “genderbenders” that are taking placeall over our globe.
Sure he was voted Male Chauvinist Pig of 1978 for hisstirring ballad about women’srights-“Get Your Biscuits in theOven and Your Buns in theBed”, but Kinky has grown a lot more sensitive to the issuessince then.
Witness his answer to theabortion issue during his Texascampaign.
“I’m not pro-life and I’m notpro-choice, I’m pro-football”
And his touching takes on gay rights.
“I support gay marriage. Ibelieve they have a right to be asmiserable as the rest of us.”
Kinky’s first assignment willbe to establish a women’s beachvolleyball league in Iran.
Ruler of Race Relations-Morgan Freeman. This onewas a no-brainer. Freeman hasshown the ability to lead an all-black unit in the Civil War(“Glory”), to deal with a crankyold white woman in the DeepSouth (“Driving Miss Daisy”)and to straighten out a tumultuous world as God(“Bruce Almighty”).
And with that great baritonevoice of his, Freeman is a natural to do all of our propaganda-oops-public service announcements that will air all over the globe.
Freeman has also shown theability to work closely with Immigration Director Eastwood(“Million Dollar Baby”) andwill not throw in the towelwhen the real fighting begins.
Transportation Tsars- Batman, Spiderman and Ironman. Hey, these guysnever seem to have any troublemaking their way through traffic. Let’s get everyone aBatmobile (Isn’t Morgan Freeman head of Bruce WayneEnterprises? See how nicely thisis all coming together.) Or someof Spidey’s ultra-strong webbingor maybe a couple of Ironman’s
rockets and we’ll all soar abovethe traffic snarls below.
And, by the way, where are allthose jet packs we were prom-ised we would all be using inthe 21st century.
Weather Wizard-Jim Cantore. One of my firstactions as King of the World willbe to change hurricane seasonfrom its current June throughNovember status to a onemonth period in December.
Next our designated hurricanehalter Jim Cantore, who alwaysseems to know exactly wherethe storm is going to hit, will besent out to issue an out-of-season ticket to any hurricanethat tries to enter the coast during the old six-month period. Violators will be sentback to Africa to do time-out inthe Sahara Desert where theycan dump all the rain they want to.
Unfortunately, the rare stormsthat do come in December willhave to be allowed to enter themainland. The advantages willbe that generators will not beneeded to run air conditionersin the winter, families will probably all be piled in one
house for Christmas anyway and Santa Claus can use thewind at his back to expedite the delivery of gifts.
Now I know what you’rethinking. With all these dutiesbeing designated, what am I-asKing of the World- going tohave left to do?
The answer comes in the finalverse of our national anthem…
“If I were the King of theWorld, tell you what I’d do,
Throw away the cars and thelaws and the wars, and makesweet love to you.
Joy to the world, all the boysand girls…”
Now get out there and vote. And don’t give me that virus excuse. I vote early in everyelection and there are only twoor three others in there where I go.
But right now I have an appointment with my dictioncoach Ed Orgeron who thinks Ineed work on my accent.

I guess each and every one ofus, at one time or another inour life, get caught up intogiving blame to someone orsomething without knowingall of the facts about the issue. Not long ago some of mycoworkers and myself were sitting around and discussingour successes and failures fromthe past hunting season. Oneof guys made a statement thatthe reason we don’t havegood duck seasons anymore isbecause of Ducks Unlimited, and that he would never jointhat organization by anymeans. That statement
immediately rose my bloodpressure and I began to defend an organization thatI’ve been a part of for most of my life. That was a very untrue statement and if itwouldn’t be for D.U., Ipromise you that you wouldnot have the waterfowl numbers that we have now.
I’ve heard by many that D.U.is responsible for keeping allthe waterfowl to the north ofLouisiana. Well Ducks Unlimited does create somerefuges along the flyways
where waterfowl can rest attimes without being disturbed. These types ofrefuges are necessary to let the birds conserve energy forbreeding and the trip backnorth. And don’t forget,Ducks Unlimited has members from states otherthan Louisiana. Those sup-porters want their slice of the pie also.
Our problems with waterfowlmigration is far beyond athing or two that D.U. maydo to prevent Ducks andgeese from migrating south. It’s been said by some thatlandowners above usshouldn’t be able to floodtheir fields to keep the ducks
up north. It’s hard to tellsomeone what they can orcan’t do with their own property to make a profit aslong as all existing laws arefollowed. Agriculture practiceshave changed drastically in thepast few years along the flyway. Another contributingfactor in waterfowl migrationis the amount of rainfall wehave, combined with withextra high Mississippi Riverwater levels that distributewater into thousand uponthousands of acres of farmlandand hardwood bottoms. Add
in water everywhere alongwith it not getting coldenough to freeze the waterand the ducks don’t have tomove south. Just think abouthow many freezes that havecome far south this past year.Let’s face it, Louisiana doesn’thave as much quality habitatthat it once had. Most of our
southern swamps are coveredwith salvinia where a duckcouldn’t land if he was thereto do so. We’ve lost thousandsof acres of coastal estuaries toerosion and subsistence because of the lack of freshwater and several major hurricanes that sped up theprocess beginning with Katrina, Rita, Gustav, Ike,Isaac and other smaller eventsof that nature. With all thisbeing said, when a duck doesfinally get here, it won’t besitting very long before someone with a boat and
motor that runs in a fewinches of water comes alongand chases it away.
If you’re a waterfowl hunterand choose not to be a member of Ducks Unlimited, then that’s your choice and agood excuse not to spend afew dollars by not doing so.As hunters and fishermen, wehave a growing audience thatdoes not agree with what wedo. By not supporting an organization that supports ourbeliefs, will only hurt us in thefuture. By the way, do you seerobins in our yards like likethey used to be? Or flocks ofcherry birds in the winter? How about woodcocks? Theyonce were everywhere in December, January and February. I saw one this yearand that was in Tensas lateone evening. Who should thatblame be put upon? On thegood side of things that arenow present, waterfowl of our state such as MexicanWhistling Ducks, CanadaGeese and Ross Geese thatwere not present in the nottoo distant past are now common to our state.
This world is changing. Always has and always will.Migration patterns are changing. Always has and always will. By not supportingan organization such asDucks Unlimited for the lackof waterfowl wintering in ourstate in my opinion is not thecorrect path to take.

It started with an Idea... building a better mousetrap?
While watching a hunting broadcast of “A Way Outdoors”some time ago, a gentleman offered his services, to folks likeme, on how to bring their huntingproduct ideas to market. He mentioned how everyone can recall seeing a product on TV, thatthey had also thought of, only tocome to fruition by someone else, and saying, “Hey, I had thatidea..., ,I could have....”. Andsince,” you'll never know, unless you try”. I made the decision to give mine a chance.Little did I know, the journey I was in for.
I'm an avid hunter, and as I'vegotten older, I have had someclose calls in “climbers and ladderstands”, I have become moreconscious of my safety in theseelevated situations. We've allheard the painful stories of accidental falls and the permanent physical toll thatcan have. For sure, it canchange your life and world. While the freedom and thrillof being in a tree stand wasthere, the reality of my age, physical abilities and the circumstances I'd find myself, at times, outweighstheir use. And so for me, thehunting ground blind was asafe and effective option, plus, I felt I could make iteven better! I didn't realizehow the simple changes Ihad envisioned, would add awhole new dynamic to theoutdoor hunting experience! After all, I had logged untold
hours of pondering in the dark, standing and staring in the darkattic of every different groundblind I had purchased, and wasdetermined to figure out how Icould improve it. And there wasplenty to ponder, design challenges, height issues, temperature and ventilation concerns, staying concealed andquiet, cost and then, getting it tomarket. And so I began inearnest. Each problem, whetherdesign or function, had to have asolution, and I was determinedto find them.
Since my idea relates to huntingdeer and turkey, some may notfind my story of interest, and I getit. But if you're a Deer or Turkey
hunter, better yet, an olderhunter, this may bring someneeded comfort and added function to your time in thewoods. Introducing the Turret Top Ground Blind, designed for a hunter to comfortably stand and view360 degrees from a quiet elevated vantage point, in aneasy to use hub style blind. To the novice or occasionalground blind user, that mightnot sound too exciting. But,for those who can relate tohours and hours of sitting, shifting from side, trying tonot make noise, wishing youcould occasionally stand andstretch, while being forcedonly to peer through a small
window of a brushed in blind. The Turret Top may be the blindfor you.
I did my best to finally bring thisproduct to market. A guy with anidea, a dream and love of the
outdoors and a seed of faith, thatGod would somehow make away, He has,and I did. ! Does itimprove an existing product?Does it add value and function toyour outdoor experience? I'll saythis, “The Turret Top Ground Blind offers something that noother blind can claim, and will add to your outdoor hunting comfort and enjoyment”.
The Turret Top comes with features that include; a multi-season camo pattern, magnets and hooks for quiet use, double brush loops, expanded door entry, and much more.
If you're interested and would like to see or purchase a Turret Top, or just want more information, call or contact,Kelly Carmouche Sr. 225-931-8801

Building a bettermousetrap?
Publisher’s Note: I purchased a Turret Top and set it up at my camp. I’m looking forward to hunting in it. It had an easy entrance and the ability to stand andstretch will allow me to hunt longer. Also set up was easy and solid.
I Let Everybody
Use My Hoe!
Recently, I have noticedcountry music creating lots ofsongs using a play on words andsending mixed messages withthe lyrics in their songs.
George Strait sang, “She letherself go” and Tim McGrawsang lyrics, “back when a Howas a hoe.” I’ll tell you a storyabout my hoe.
Last year I stopped beingcheap, for one day, and spentthe extra money to get the besthoe in town. I dropped $25 onthis hoe and haven’t regretted itone minute, however it hasbeen the subject of some prettyentertaining conversation.
My cell phone rang just after Ihad purchased the hoe and mybuddy on the phone asked.“What are you doing?” Proudof my purchase, I simply toldhim I had gone to town andpicked up a $25 hoe. He said,“A Ho, Where?” I responded,“At a local western store.” Ithen told him, “They have thebest hoes in town and once Ihad my hands on this hoe I wasn’t letting it go so don’t tryto borrow my hoe and go getyour own hoe.”
In his confusion he responed,“Hold on Bully. I never, ever, considered sharing a Ho withyou, you pervert”.
Realizing he was confused Ithought I’d play it up a bit. Itold him I was bringing my hoeto the hunting camp and passing the hoe around and let-ting all my buddies use it asmuch they wanted. Hell, throwmy hoe in the back of yourtruck and carry it in the woodsif you want.
“What a friend! Where’s yourcamp?”
I couldn’t hold on any longerI had to tell him the truth. Itwasn’t a Ho, Ho. It was a hoe, hoe. Not to be confused with aYoo Hoo.
However, I did go to the campwith my hoe and the play onwords continued to flow rightoff the tongue.
When I arrived at the campBubba said, “Damn look at thathoe. I’m takin’ that hoe homewith me.”
Questions and statementswere made. “Are you leavingthat hoe at the camp?” “We canall use a good hoe like that.”“Your hoe is going to help meburn some black iron pots.”“I’m taking your hoe to mydeer stand.” “Somebody get thehoe to do this.” “Damn it. I leftyour hoe in the woods.” “OW!!I tripped over your hoe.”
I have never been so proud ofa hoe and yes, I left it at thecamp through the winter.
Well it’s spring and I wasmissing my hoe. So I went tothe camp and picked up thehoe. I laid it down and tied it tothe flooring of my trailer andgave it a ride.
Once home, I gave my hoe agood cleaning, scrubbed itdown, and introduced it to mygirl friend. I now have my girlfriend using my hoe and sheknows how to work a hoe. Her father taught her to use a hoealong time ago. She said she hasused some rickecty hoes in herday but this was the best hoeshe has had her hands on in along time.
I was working in my gardenthe other day and my sweetheart called me on my celland asked, “What Cha Doing?”I simply replied, “Me and myhoe are hoeing around, How about you?”
