Universal Vortex Inc (UVI) is pleased to describe herein the design for Vortex Natural Gas Liquids Recovery (VNGLR).This application of UVI’s innovative vortex tubes incorporated into a J-T skid thermally conditions (cools) the gasstream upstream of the separator. This cooling can be applied to either improve liquids recovery or, alternatively, reduce the compression energy per unit of cooling. Thus VNGLR provides a financial benefit and/or an energy savingand environmentally benefit.A vortex tube (VT) configured as a Vortex Pressure Reducer (VPR) is a specially designed cylindrical device with nomoving parts that can be used to reduce the pressure of pressurized gas During pressure reduction the released gasundergoes internal energy and mass segregation (Vortex Phenomenon) forming internal ‘cold’ and ‘hot’ flows. UVI’sinnovations include VPR that provide non-freeze pressure reduction, single stream outlet as well as an integral heatexchanger.

VNGLR is based on the use of Universal Vortex Inc.’s (UVI’s) innovative and proprietary vortex tube technology toprovide non-freeze pressure reduction as well as thermal conditioning of the gas stream.

Firstly the vortex tube non-freeze pressure reduction provides J-T cooling of the gas stream. Then, as the hot fractionpressure reduced or the gas stream is cooled by chilled gas exiting the liquids separator in the integral one flow vortextube heat exchange chamber, colder gas than would be delivered by J-T cooling alone enter the liquids separator.A secondary benefit of using the UVI vortex tube in this manner is that the cold gas leaving the separator is alsowarmed before entering the downstream pipeline (ie the cold gas exiting the separator cools the vortex pressurereduced gas and in doing so is itself warmed). Thus, in addition to providing improved NGL recovery, the use of theUVI vortex tube can contribute to preventing problems associated with external condensation/ice on the downstreampiping including frost heave affecting the buried pipe. The Joule-Thomson based process plant can be converted to a VNGLR plant by replacing the Joule-Thomson valvewith a Vortex Tube. No other equipment replacement and or changes are needed. It is viable to effectively andefficiently improve natural gas liquids recovery using VNGLR as an alternative to a conventional J-T recovery. UsingUVI's innovation and proprietary technology in this application achieves the design objectives of either improvedliquids recovery or reduced energy consumption.
