always used this philosophy when we design our cars. So, while

other manufacturers might start with technology and try to squeeze

people in around it, we begin by designing our cars around you.

We understand what you need, and then use our technical skills to

make your life easier, better, safer and more beautiful. Form follows

function, and when you design a car inside and out with people in

mind, it looks naturally beautiful.

Designing cars around people hasled to many innovations over our86-year history. The three-pointsafety belt in your current car? Thatwas our invention from 1959. Weve

solved a few environmental issues,too in 1976, we developed thecatalytic converter and the lambdasond, a sensor that monitors exhaustgas, reducing emissions and boostingperformance as well as economy.

We think that the details are just asimportant, too. Take our seats. In theearly 1960s, we consulted with a teamof orthopedic surgeons at ChalmersUniversity of Technology here inGothenburg, Sweden. Nobody hadthought to ask an orthopaedicsurgeons advice when designing a carseat before. But the ergonomic seatdesigns we developed as a result havemade our cars world famous for theiroutstanding long-distance comfort.

And we use natural, authentic materials

inside our cars not because theyrefashionable this season, but becausethey make you feel good.

Creating a beautiful experience for youis natural for us. Because in Sweden,great design is a way of life, not a luxury.

This is our P1800 sports coupe, launched in 1961. So, beautiful as itis, why are we talking about a five-decade-old car? Well, it embodiesthe design philosophy we still use today. It shows the confidence ofour cars styling backed up by the design authority that has madeScandinavia world-renowned. Significantly, our little two-seat grandtourer also shows the importance we place on making you feel good.And that isnt just about ergonomic seats and beautifully designedcabins, but just as much about creating a shape that will make youfeel special every time you look at it.

Weve had a brilliant response to our chassis its had fantasticreviews in the motoring press, says Stefan Sllqvist, Volvos handlingguru. The secret?Corner Traction Control, our torque vectoring system that reducesundersteer, making cornering safe and fun.

The S60 also includes an Advanced Stability Control that can quicklyidentify any tendency of skidding. This allows the anti-skid systemto activate earlier and with greater precision which helps to improvehandling and rapid lane change maneuvers. The Dynamic Stabilityand Traction Control System DSTC also has a Sport Mode that allowsthe car to be driven more actively by relaxing the sensitivity of the anti-spin system.

Safety has become a Volvo by word somuch so that sometimes we forget to talkabout it. Still, keeping people safe has alwaysbeen at the heart of what we do. We callthis philosophy IntelliSafe. Its a commitmentthat goes back to 1927, the year Assar

Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larson started ourcompany with a simple idea: that people andtheir safety should be the guiding principlebehind everything we do. As a result, Volvohas a 85-year history of pioneering safetyadvances. For example, weve been fittingall our cars with safety cages and laminatedwindscreens since 1944.

Today, were building cars that actively scanthe area around you, looking out for theunexpected. We invented City Safety, whichhelps to prevent rear-end collisions at speedsof up to 30 mph. And we developed PedestrianDetection, a system that detects pedestriansand brakes the car when necessary. But wewont stop there. In the future, our aim is todesign cars that will prevent collisions withother road users altogether.
