3.2 Support portal

At www.smceu.com all other information needed can be accessed. Any queries can also be sent to the noted contact persons.

3.3 Engineering Software

At http://www.smcworld.com/select/en/ is model selection software available.

3.4 Safety

SMC has a number of safety components, and validated operational components were we confirm in manuals that they fulfil basic and well-tried safety principles according to ISO13849. Do remember that all components that are part of the circuit also forms part of the safety circuit. SMC can provide B10d data for all components (which is needed when designing a safety circuit). SMC will generally not advise which level of safety is required in a machine function, but can provide components to the desired levels.

More information about how to work with ISO13849-1 and SMC’s offering in this field can be found at https://content2.smcetech.com/pdf/ISO13849-1_EU.pdf

3.4.1 Two hand control valve, VR51

VR51 is certified to IIIA (EN574) and can be used in applications where it is desirable that workers have both hands in a controlled position to avoid accidents.

4 General Engineering and design guidelines

4.1 Volvo pneumatic rules for cylinder operation:

Apply on cylinders with stroke ->100mm and diameter larger den 25mm.)

• Most stop without delay, (Emergency stop, protective stop or automatic stop) • Shall not move after stop even if in exhausting or pressurizing state • Avoid internal force when stroke is not completed. Prevent movement • Controlled, monitored movement. • Design with fixed end position when precision is required. Short strokes always

run against end position • Air pressure required has been reached and stable before next action is

allowable • Most stop without delay when signal is down, at manual and automatic running

conditions • Cylinders integrated absorption of thrust energy is to be used were possible. If

not possible external shock absorbers are to be used

Special considerations are to be applied if there are any crush hazards.

• If there is a crush hazard a mechanical locking device is to be used to secure position if movement cylinders can be expected. piston rod locking device or locking device on external guides

• If not possible to acheive contact Volvo

Pneumatic systems and concepts are to be approved by Volvo at gate R

4.2 Air quality

Machinery level

Compressed air shall be dry and well filtered according to ISO 8573-1:2001, Class 2.4.3, (Dew point class may wary depending on operation condition).

Particle filter, oil mist separating filter and for operating conditions suitable drying equipment is required to establish ISO8573-2:2001 Class 2.4.3.

All applications is recommended to be designed for a supply pressure of 4 bar (0,4Mpa) to reduce energy consumption. Applications requiring higher pressure can be solved by using pressure boosters on individual circuits.

Page 8: Volvo Group Trucks Operations Specification: Item ... Customized Catalogue Volvo GTO.pdf · Volvo Group Trucks Operations Specification: Item: Pneumatic components . ... 2.2 SMC Pneumatics

8

4.3 Component standard

Quality components sized for operating conditions and flow conditions to minimize pressure loss and also to avoid over-sizing, which results in unnecessary air consumption and increased component cost. Components resistant to elevated levels of ozone shall be used. This is necessary due to more frequent use of oil-free compressors.

4.3.1 Regulators

Regulators shall be used to avoid any unregulated air on machinery level, and component level on components such as actuators and process valves.

4.3.2 Filters

Filters sized for minimum pressure loss at current flow conditions and regularly maintained and replaced. Must be replaced no later than when pressure drop over filter reaches 0.1Mpa. However SMC recommends exchange of main line filter at a pressure drop of 0.05 Mpa to allow a lower safety margin of set pressure at compressors, which saves a lot of energy. Main line filters should be equipped with pressure differential monitoring.

4.3.3 Actuators

High quality actuators with low friction and long life time shall be used.

Avoid lip-sealed actuators as that construction principle has shorter life time than modern actuators.

Hard chromated piston rods are to be used due to reduced wear of rod seals.

Pressure reduced return strokes shall be used when possible to reduce energy consumption. Long stroke shuttle actuators shall be compared with electrical drive alternatives in terms of energy consumption and sourcing costs.

4.3.4 Valves

Properly sized valves, with low power consumption should be used. Long-life products such as metal seal valves are preferred to reduce unplanned production stoppages.

4.3.5 Fittings and Tubing

Page 9: Volvo Group Trucks Operations Specification: Item ... Customized Catalogue Volvo GTO.pdf · Volvo Group Trucks Operations Specification: Item: Pneumatic components . ... 2.2 SMC Pneumatics

9

High quality push-in fittings with high tolerances and matching tubes will decrease leakages. Tube and fitting quality should be chosen for operating conditions, such as elevated temperatures etc. avoid operating conditions in upper range of tubing specifications.

Tubing shall be cut with designated tube cutters to avoid leakages due to unevenly cut tubes.

Completely avoid armed PVC tubing together with hose clamp fixtures as that is the most common leakage source within compressed air systems.

4.3.6 Process valves

Operated at pressure level stated, avoid unnecessarily high pressure.

4.4 Air Blow functions

Incorrectly sized blow functions are among the largest consumers in compressed air systems in plants. If possible, avoid using high pressure compressed air for blow applications. When high pressure is required, ensure proper sizing for minimum pressure loss. Use properly sized nozzles and use shut-off valves to cut air blow when not required.

4.5 Leakage monitoring

Approximately 20-30% of all compressed air produced in a plant is consumed by leakages in a non-controlled compressed air system. Volvo's recommendation is that all machines that use compressed air should have a Flow Switch.

5 Energy Saving Energy saving recommendations for purchase of Equipment using compressed air; Volvo New construction, purchase of new equipment or production lines Minimize pressure;

Set a target pressure for example 0,4 MPa (4 bar) and work actively to minimize this, for example;

• Only select products that are designed to be operated at 0,4MPa (4 bar) or less.

• Dimension the filter units with a maximum pressure drop of 0,03MPa (0,3 bar), and use a differential pressure gauge/sensor for filters with greater flows that indicate when it is time to replace the filter element.

• Use dimensioning software to optimize the tube dimensions to the application details to avoid unnecessary pressure drop.

• Analyze machine applications and their pressure requirement, thereafter section the machinery into pressure zones.

• Use a pressure booster when high pressures are required. • Use double power cylinders for applications requiring increased power. • Evaluate return stroke optimization on all cylinders with Ø40 and up.

Factors to be taken into account; pressure, number of cycles and stroke.

Blow and vacuum applications;

• Install multistage ejectors at major suction flows. Check the operating sequences and/or install ejectors with energy saving functionality.

• Use vacuum saving valves in applications where lift objects vary in size or for other reasons have suspended suction cups.

• Ensure that blow functions are used only when needed and combined with properly dimensioned pressure, lines and nozzles.

• Use a flow amplifier when there are requirements for high flow. Minimize leakage;

• Install an ALDS, which is an automatic diagnostic device that detects leaks and shows where the machine is leaking, and how much.

• Use a Standby valve (idle mode), reduce pressure at idle mode to minimize leakage.

• Flow monitoring with clearly specified values for operation, idle mode and when the machine is shut down.

• Use shutoff valves when the machine is not in operation.

Page 11: Volvo Group Trucks Operations Specification: Item ... Customized Catalogue Volvo GTO.pdf · Volvo Group Trucks Operations Specification: Item: Pneumatic components . ... 2.2 SMC Pneumatics

11

Other things to consider;

• Compare investment cost with energy consumption (perform an LCC analysis)

• Dimension products based on real operational data and perform a simulation with varied parameters to ensure that the most energy-optimized machine is constructed.

• Evaluate electric cylinder energy compared to investment costs, this ratio is interesting for example on applications with shuttle cylinders.

• Avoid products that require leak flow alternatively choose products with a minimal leakage flow.
