We have added a leadership development component to this listserv as there were some

volunteer opportunities that would be a great chance to practice your leadership skills and

these two opportunities are great examples of something that could satisfy the leadership

component for the Gold level of the VIP.

The SVB will be closed the 9th and 10th as lectures are not in session due to the break. We will

reopen Wednesday October 11th at 10:00AM.

Volunteering Opportunities!

1. Students Older than Average The MUN Students’ Union currently operates seven resource centres. A resource centre is a

safe meeting space, an information and knowledge source, and a peer support network within

the university community. We are providing a safe meeting space, an information and

knowledge source, and a peer support network within the university community for older

students. The Students Older than Average resource centre is looking for volunteers! Email

2. Call for volunteers: Startup Weekend Startup Weekend is a 54-hour weekend event, during which groups of developers, business

managers, startup enthusiasts, marketing gurus, graphic artists and more pitch ideas for new

startup companies, form teams around those ideas, and work to develop a working prototype,

demo, or presentation by Sunday evening.

We are seeking motivated volunteers to help with registration, promotion, organizing &

supporting the teams, distributing food and generally being helpful for any part of the

weekend. We will have food for volunteers as well as transportation to and from the event site

in the beautiful community of Holyrood from convenient pickup locations in St. John's!

Please let me know if this is an opportunity the SVB would be interested in! I look forward to

The event runs November 10-12 out in Holyrood. Transportation to & from would be included.

Students interested would be out there for the whole day (or evening if just Friday), as we

provide transport only first thing & then in the evening when the events have finished. We’d be

happy to have volunteers interested in multiple days or just one if that’s what they can fit into

their schedule.

you’ll be matched with someone with vision loss in your area for just a couple hours a week to

help them with everyday activities; like social visits, assistance with organizing, running errands,

reading, going for walks, and keeping active in the community! For more information or to

4. Canadian Red Cross

Interested in being part of the largest humanitarian organization in the world? Apply to become

Management and Community Health programs in the St. John’s and surrounding area.

CHMR is Newfoundland and Labrador's only campus/community radio station, operating out of

studios on the Memorial University campus in St. John's and broadcasting both on the FM dial

as well as online where it can be accessed around the world.

CHMR is a community access radio station that operates with a large staff of volunteers

producing a broad range of programming. Our volunteers are both students and community

members, and range in age from high school students to retired professionals. Programs

include everything from music (of various genres) to news/documentary and current affairs

issue-based programming.

CHMR is constantly looking for new volunteers in the community who are interested in getting

involved with the work that we do! No experience is necessary besides a desire to learn radio

skills and share those skills with the community. All training is provided. Getting involved with

CHMR can be an exciting way to learn new skills, to have fun while exploring your passions and

interests, or to explore a possible new career! CHMR is one of the province's only hands-on

training environments for radio-broadcasting and radio-journalism and many of our volunteers

go on to forge exciting professional careers in these fields. Some of the programming we

produce is syndicated nationally and internationally and broadcast on other stations around the

world.

for MUN students, but there is a $20 annual membership fee for non-students.

6. Make Midterm Matter Fall 2017! Make Midterm Matter takes place each semester at Memorial University. Students spend one

day of midterm break volunteering, learning, and engaging at designated community

organizations. For the Fall Term the theme is “building community.” We will be listening and

learning while volunteering at one of the following locations: -Bridges to Hope -Elaine Dobbin

Centre for Autism -Pippy Park -MUN Food Bank –Manuels River Interpretation Centre –Caribou

8. Scouts Canada Hey Student Volunteers! Do you … • Enjoy the outdoors? • Have the desire to learn new skills? • Like to make new friends? • Want to play a role in developing the next generation of youth? If you said yes to any of the above then you have found the right place! Scouts Canada is looking for some new faces to volunteer with our Groups in the St. John’s-area (and beyond)! We are Canada’s leading youth organization. Scouts have a lot of fun discovering new things and experiences they wouldn’t have elsewhere. Along the way they develop into capable, confident and well-rounded individuals, better prepared for success in the world. Scouting offers a world where you can discover the best in yourself and the best in others. The Scouts Canada program is open to BOTH boys and girls, ages 5-26, with age-specific programming (Beavers, Cubs, Scouts, etc.). To ensure the success of these programs, we need the support of dedicated volunteers, just like you! Many of our current groups could benefit from additional volunteers, willing to dedicate approximately 12-14 hours/month to the program, generally from September-June, and some groups offer occasional summer activities. There are 14 groups in the St. John’s area that you could join, including a new French Language Group that is in development.

10. Buckmaster’s Circle Community Centre Volunteer Tutors Buckmaster’s Circle Community Centre is looking for 1 - 2 volunteers that would like to assist with homework! The program runs from 3:30 - 5:30 Mondays and Wednesdays and those who are fluent in math are particularly needed for this program. 11. Call for Volunteers: Monte Carlo Charity Gala Every year, the first - and second-year medical students at MUN help raise money for four deserving charities by putting off the Monte Carlo Charity Gala, which this year falls on Saturday, November 18th, 2017. Our four charities this year are Stella’s Circle, The Gathering Place, The AIDS Committee of NL, and Bridges to Hope. This year, we want to recruit volunteers from MUN who are not enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine to help us during the gala. Volunteers would be needed to help us on the day of the gala (Saturday, November 18th, 2017), both in the morning and the evening, and there are a number of different positions available. Volunteers need to commit to helping us for a specified time period during the day (for e.g. 6 hours for set-up/take-down) and must attend a mandatory training session, tentatively scheduled for Tuesday Oct 24th, 2017 in the evening. We can provide reference letters to volunteers and are working to get the experience count towards the Co-Curricular Record at MUN. 12. MUN World Health Organization Volunteer Opportunity The MUN WHO society strives to raise student awareness about global health issues by organizing an annual simulation WHO conference. This provides an opportunity for students to learn about global health policy and to develop professional relationships between future healthcare professionals. We are looking for volunteers to assist the fundraising activities throughout the year and to assist with the delivery of the conference in March. 13. St. John’s International Women’s Film Festival We need (and adore) you! Our Festival cannot happen without the incredible generosity and

help of our rockstar Volunteers - and we do our best to make it worth it for you! While sporting our snazzy annually-designed volunteer apparel, you’ll not only have the opportunity of participating in our landmark annual event, you’ll also meet filmmakers from world-over, other industry delegates and patrons, & receive a full Festival Pass to sit in on workshops and screenings! Volunteer activities include: taking tickets, directing patrons & delegates, decorating, shuttle driving, supervising workshop registration, assisting in screening set-up, selling Festival merchandise & Film Lover’s Lottery tickets, greeting our amazing sponsors & guests, and more! Leadership Development 1. Undergraduate Student Senators The MUN Students' Union is seeking applications for Student Senators Represent over 13,000 undergraduate students by serving on the University Senate, the governing body responsible for academic decision making at Memorial. Any undergraduate student interested in University governance and the Memorial community is encouraged to apply. Student Senators must be available for meetings at 3:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from November 2017 to May 2018. To apply: Submit a resume, class schedule, and a cover letter detailing why you want to be a student senator to the MUNSU office (UC-2000) or by email to advocacy@munsu.ca by 12pm on Tuesday, Oct. 17th.

2. Make Mid-Term Matter Team Lead

The Student Experience Office is looking for Make Mid-Term Matter Leads! Make Midterm Matter is a one-day community engaged learning day, where volunteers, undergrad and grad

students and some staff leads, travel out to community organizations to give a day of their lives to make a difference in the community. What do the students gain? They gain leadership skills, communication skills, teamwork, they gain the confidence and the empathy to become stronger students and stronger citizens. The partner organizations gain by our service. It is a win-win situation. The general conduct of the day is to conduct a pre-event reflection to determine what their expectations are, what they think they will be doing, and what they hope to gain from the service. The partner representative will meet the students and give an overview of what each organization does, goals, challenges, etc, and any safety or other points you wish to raise. The students complete the service, learning as they go. Then, when the work is complete, we will do a post-event reflection, reflecting on what they have learned and experienced. Professional/Personal Development 1. Study Skills Clinic An interactive study skills clinic offered each semester for graduate students who are

encountering difficulties with academic coursework. These drop-in sessions provide an

opportunity for students to discuss their concerns with a psychologist and develop strategies to

2. Biochemistry Career Talk

When: October 30th, 2017

Where: The Landing (UC 3018)

Time: 12pm-1:30pm

Science alumni with biochemistry backgrounds who are working in the industry will present to

science students and graduates about their current careers and how they navigated their job

search. Since many jobs are not publicly advertised, networking is a major way that students

and graduates find jobs and careers!

Although this is a Biochemistry Career Talk, careers often overlap in various disciplines in

science. Therefore, all science students/ graduates, as well as prospective science students are

welcome to attend!

3. Free mental health first aid training for students, faculty and staff Starting later this month, Student Residences will offer free mental health first aid training to all

students, faculty and staff. This two-day course is offered eight times throughout 2017-2018

and is available on the following dates: Sept. 23-24; Oct. 14-15; Oct. 25-26; Nov. 18-19; Jan.

13-14; Jan. 27-28; Feb. 22-23; Mar. 24-25. Register for the course here.

Throw it Forward will take place on Thursday, November 16th in partnership with Jack Axes. We are encouraging adults in metro St. John’s to embrace their inner lumberjack, assemble a team and join us at Jack Axes to battle the bulls-eye and to ‘raise an axe for mentoring’. WHO: Adult participants who support good causes and believe in a strong, healthy community for children and youth.
