Volunteering Information
Whether you’re lending a hand on a conservation project, assisting on fun
community events, fundraising for a good cause or are interested in helping in
a field you’re passionate about, the Hertfordshire Students’ Union
Volunteering Service has hundreds of rewarding opportunities for everyone!
How can you get involved?

local community!
Community Placement Opportunities
If you’re interested in regularly volunteering with a community organisation in a
specific area, or want to develop your skills in a certain role, then we can
support you in finding opportunities in the local community. Visit our website
and check out the placements listed. You can also visit the do-it website or our
local Volunteer Centres for even more opportunities.
One-Off Opportunities
We run a variety of one-off opportunities throughout the year, usually one day,
so you can try something new and get some experience without a long term
commitment.
Opportunities include conservation work, cleaning up the local community,
painting schools, providing workshops to young people and supporting
activities/events on campus!

5 Minute Volunteering
You can make a difference in just 5 minutes. If you don’t have much time to
volunteer then take part in some of our 5 minute volunteering activities that will
be running over the year! You can even get involved with volunteering from
home, check out our website and read about some of the ways you can do so!
What counts as volunteering?
- Travel time to and from your activity
- Pre-activity preparation time e.g.
meetings, planning an event
- Admin tasks e.g. emails, poster
design
- Meetings related to your role
- Time spent on training and meeting
with the volunteering team
- Time spent on carrying out your
volunteering activities
Expenses
No volunteer should be out of
pocket. All reasonable travel
costs will be reimbursed by
most organisations. In case
volunteers are experiencing any
difficulties with their out of
pocket expenses, they should
contact Hertfordshire Students’
Union Volunteering team.
Volunteer Commitments
How much time you can commit to your
volunteering and how involved you
wish to get is totally up to you; from
starting up your own project or
attending a one-off project, we have
opportunities to match your every need
and work around your studies.
Once you have started your
volunteering it is important to be
reliable, honest and punctual and
inform the organisation/project if you
are unable to make the agreed day/
time or of any changes of
circumstances that will affect your
volunteering.
