Volunteers for SAM (Station’s Archived Memories) Station's Archived Memories (SAM) welcomes new and veteran volunteers throughout the year. If you have time to share, SAM needs your help. A volunteer-driven project, SAM has been an integral part of Rocky Mountain PBS for the past seventeen years.

Whether your interest or skills lie in doing research, scanning materials, transcribing or conducting interviews, preserving local productions or doing data entry, your help would be eagerly applauded in the archives. Training is available to any volunteer that wants to join the effort.

SAM offers the chance to meet fellow volunteers who share your interest in the station’s history and who enjoy working with other volunteers.

Schedules are flexible with the bulk of work being done during business hours at the SAM Office at Rocky Mountain PBS in Denver.

Page 3: Volunteer Opportunities: March 2017pbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod... · Contact Alex Forsett at alexforsett@rmpbs.org for more information on the following opportunities:

How can YOU get involved?

• Contact RMPBS Volunteer Coordinator, Susan Barber (303) 620-5715, [email protected].

• Contact the SAM Office by phone at 303-620-5734 • Email [email protected] • Visit the SAM webpage at rmpbs.org/sam

Why I volunteer with SAM from Lee Guy, SAM Photo Committee Volunteer:

RMPBS is my source for news and nightly viewing. I see the need in preserving its past for Denver and Colorado. Many folks contributed to RMPBS programming and SAM’s efforts to preserve its past should be accurate and factual.

Videographer for Oral History Interviews An Oral History videographer is responsible for videotaping Oral History interviews with the Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) project. The interviews occur, for the most part during the day. The Oral History interviewer schedules the interviews. The approximate time commitment for one interview is approximately two hours. The videographer is responsible for setting up the interview room at the station and returning the equipment to its storage area after each interview.

The Oral History videographer should know how to operate a consumer video camera. In addition, it is helpful to have knowledge of proper video framing, audio and overall intended look for interviews and to be familiar with Oral History guidelines prepared for videographers.

If interested, please contact Susan Barber [email protected].

Want to Impact Kids? Join the Volunteer Ranks for our "Super School News" program Join the volunteers for "Super School News" (www.rmpbs.org/ssn) and make a difference in a child’s life. This education-based program is the oldest, continuously running production of Rocky Mountain PBS. For over 30 years, volunteers have made it possible for 5th and 6th graders to produce 2-minute news broadcasts about their schools which appear on the air. This program introduces children to the world of broadcast news and, as a result, some of the "Super School News" alumni have gone on to careers in journalism and broadcast.

Volunteers will be assigned a school and work with a teacher and student team (1-2 coaching sessions at the school) to design their broadcast. Volunteer training is provided. In addition, volunteers will assist with assembling information (1 morning in August and December), orientation day (1 morning in September and January) and will attend the taping session at the Denver station.

We hope you will help sustain this legacy program. If you are interested in volunteering, please email [email protected] or Susan [email protected].

Amanda Mountain, New RMPM President & CEO, Speaks to Volunteers

Page 8: Volunteer Opportunities: March 2017pbs.bento.storage.s3.amazonaws.com/hostedbento-prod... · Contact Alex Forsett at alexforsett@rmpbs.org for more information on the following opportunities:

It’s a thrilling time to be part of public media in general, and Rocky Mountain Public Media in particular.

Over the last few weeks, our leadership (volunteer and staff) has affirmed and codified our collective vision for the future of RMPM: to elevate RMPM as the only truly statewide media organization in Colorado, engaging Coloradans in the civic fabric of their communities through public media. Achieving this will require time, energy, and a deep commitment to listening and engaging our audiences in compelling programs that are meaningful to them, both in person, online and over the air.

As always, volunteers are vital in bringing our vision to fruition because you are uniquely qualified and involved in all facets of our impact in Colorado and beyond. You are valued team members. Representatives of the communities we serve. Vital investors of time, talent and money to make our work possible. You are our institutional memory, our ambassadors on the ground, our organizational backbone.

Whether you’re a steady volunteer or still waiting for the right opportunity, thank youfor your initiative, support, and dedication. Whatever your current commitment level, I invite you to consider deepening your investment with RMPM over the coming months – we’ve never needed you more and the potential to make a difference has never been greater.

I look forward to working with you to transform public media!

Amanda Mountain, President and CEO

Tidbits of History About Rocky Mountain PBS: RMPM Welcomes New President/CEO By Laura Sampson | Founder | Station’s Archived Memories Rocky Mountain Public Media, the parent company of Rocky Mountain PBS, Rocky Mountain PBS News, and KUVO Jazz, has grown immensely since its earliest days of broadcasting as KRMA Educational Television in 1956. RMPBS has developed into Colorado's only statewide television network, with stations in Denver (KRMA), Pueblo/ Colorado Springs (KTSC), Steamboat Springs (KRMZ), Grand Junction (KRMJ) and Durango (KRMU).

History is made daily at Rocky Mountain Public Media. Amanda Mountain wasrecently welcomed as the new President/CEO, on February 6, 2017. The volunteers of Station’s Archived Memories (SAM) that work daily to document the station’s history applaud ALL of the Executive Directors who’ve contributed to the station’s successes over the past sixty-one years. We are very excited to see what the future holds.

We thank Doug Price for his years as the RMPBS President/CEO. He took the station in new directions and recently introduced us to the future of a beautiful new Denver home for Rocky Mountain Public Media that will be located on Arapahoe Square.

The volunteers and staff will jointly look forward to the future of Rocky Mountain PBS as Amanda assumes the role as the new President/CEO. She is wished the very best and can be assured that current and future volunteers will be here to support her efforts and those of the RMPM staff in whatever ways we can.

Please enjoy a walk through the executive history of Rocky Mountain Public Media by browsing the scrapbook of archived photographs of its executive leaders, 1955-2017.

If you’re interested in volunteering for SAM, donating to the archives, or you‘re simply curious to know more about the station’s history through archived documents, productions, memorabilia, oral histories or photographs, please contact Station’s Archived Memories at Rocky Mountain PBS 303-620-5734 or [email protected].

Volunteers and Staff Celebrate 2017 From-the-Heart Recipients There was love, laughter, cheers and (of course) cake as volunteers and staff gathered together on February 14th to honor four very special folks. This cherished RMPBS/KRMA tradition began in 1997. From-the-Heart celebrates those individuals (two volunteers and two staff members) who exemplify outstanding dedicated service to the Rocky Mountain PBS and KUVO community and who give unselfishly of their time and energy. They exceed expectations and often work quietly out of the limelight.

Congratulations and thanks go to:

Janet Weisheit (Volunteer/RMPBS) Janet began volunteering in 1979 or 1981…..so at the very least, she has been volunteering for 36 years! She has done it all for the station: auction (regular and online), Vol Board, general assistance at all types of special events including Kids Fun Fest and NewsMakers. She and Leslie Smith co-chaired Super School News for several years and she still continues to volunteer for "Super School News." Congratulations and thank you Janet!

Phil Cortese (Volunteer/KUVO) Phil has been a long-time member and volunteer at KUVO. He has served on the KUVO Community Advisory Board (CAB) as a member and chairperson. Phil is generous in donating his time and energy to KUVO and RMPBS. He has gone on the air to “pitch” during pledge drives, initiated

the On-Air host recognition party and was integral in CAB participation in all aspects of volunteering. Congratulations and thank you Phil!

Arvida Rascon (Staff/KUVO) Arvida is impressively dedicated to her role at KUVO as a volunteer coordinator and assisting with development. She always has a huge smile on her face, and is a key piece of the KUVO puzzle. She is as patient as can be and will stop what she’s doing to explain things. She frequently works late or from home. Congratulations and thank you Arvida!

Ryan Conley (Staff/RMPBS) Ryan has been with the station for nearly a decade and has shown great flexibility in light of many departmental changes enabling team success and efficiency. Volunteers appreciate Ryan’s sense of humor, amazing patience and exceptional creativity with each and every request. He is responsible for every piece of collateral we use on a daily basis and has led the implementation of our brand refresh. Congratulations and thank you Ryan!

30 Year Anniversary for Rocky Mountain PBS in Southern Colorado (Buell Communication Center/KTSC) By Scott Jones, Producer/Director, RMPBS It was 30 years ago on February 28,1987 that the Buell Communications Center (BCC), home to Rocky Mountain PBS’ Southern Colorado studio, was dedicated. (KTSC joined RMPBS in October 1999. Prior to that, KTSC was the southern Colorado affiliate of PBS, signing on for the first time February 3, 1971.)

Construction on the BCC on the University of Southern Colorado (now CSU-Pueblo) campus started in April of 1986. On a very cold January 6, 1987, KTSC began broadcasting from the new

facility after moving from the original location on University of Southern Colorado Orman campus (now Pueblo Community College) overnight.

The dedication of the building took place on February 28, 1987. Distinguished guests included Governor Roy Romer, Robert McNeil (McNeil-Lehrer Newshour) and Temple Hoyne Buell. Currently, the Buell Communications Center also houses KTSC-FM (student run radio station), the Mass Communications Department, the CSU-Pueblo Today online newspaper and the CSU-Pueblo Visitors Center.

Here is a link to a short video documenting 30 years in the Buell Communications Center.

In Memoriam: Pamela Whitney By Laura Sampson It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of longtime volunteer, Pamela Whitney, on January 29, 2017. For over a decade (1985-1998), Pam shared her heart, talent and time to KRMA-TV contributing over 3,500 volunteer hours. Pam was the epitome of a devoted KRMA volunteer that was dearly loved by both staff and her fellow volunteers.

Born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Pam resided in Denver for eighteen years. After leaving Denver in 1998, she and her husband, John (also a dedicated KRMA volunteer) lived in Houston, Anchorage (where Pam was the volunteer coordinator for the Iditarod) and most recently in Sequim, Washington where they built their “dream home.”

Pam was a tireless volunteer who was involved in every volunteer opportunity that the station had to offer including Membership Drives, Garage Sales, Auctions (serving most often as the Commissary Chair), Doggie Dash, and on the Volunteer Board as Chairperson of Super School News.

Pam and John also served as hosts for the 1992 Channel Six “Murder Mystery Weekend” at the Oxford Hotel. Several years later, when Pam served as Super School News Chair, she went above-and-beyond the job description by hosting a group of Grand Junction elementary school newscasters and their teacher overnight at her private home so they could be sure to arrive at KRMA in time for their early morning taping of SSN.

Pam’s celebratory cakes were relished by KRMA staff and volunteers. A talented baker by heart, Pam joyfully created and donated an abundance of delicious cakes for Volunteer Appreciation events, birthdays, Auctions, Membership celebrations and other station events. Additionally, Pam voluntarily repaired Mrs. Bird’s (KRMA Mascot) costume, worked on Wine Tasting events, and even served as the editor for several Membership Department Cookbooks such as “P is for Pasta” and “Bountiful Harvest.”

During on-air studio visits for Membership Drives by famous PBS chefs such as Julia Child, Nick Stellino, Martin Yen and others, “Chef Whitney” was always there to work alongside the chefs both on and off the air. When visiting PBS personalities came to RMPBS and needed a volunteer chauffeur for airport runs and to be delivered to their public appearances, Pam was the “go-to” volunteer to transport such PBS stars as Shari Lewis, Trevor Bannister, John Tesh, Yanni and others – always ensuring that the special guests arrived at their KRMA destinations and airplanes on time.

We are very grateful to Pam Whitney for her many years as KRMA’s “Volunteer Extraordinaire.” She will be missed and always lovingly remembered by her Rocky Mountain PBS family.
