Radcliffe Animal Centre

The RSPCA Radcliffe Animal Centre Trust welcomes volunteers and recognises that they make a valuable contribution towards its work and improving animal welfare.

Volunteers provide additional support to our staff to ensure our animals receive the best care and attention and are provided with plenty of opportunity for exercise and socialisation. Volunteers are also vital in helping to raise funds for the Animal Centre so that its work can continue. Volunteers may also be recruited because of individual skills that will benefit the Animal Centre in some way.

The Trust will ensure that all volunteers are treated fairly and equally throughout the recruitment process and during their time as a volunteer.

All volunteers will be invited to attend an induction session usually lasting between 2 - 3 hours. This will give you an insight into the work we do, health and safety, and an opportunity to look round the centre. For those that are interested in working with dogs there will be a short training course in basic behaviour, safe approach and handling.

All volunteers will be asked to provide two references.

There are a number of roles that volunteers can enjoy, we have included a brief description of some. If you have any particular skills or are able to help in any way we would love to hear from you, whether this is as an individual or as a group. We have included a corporate letter if you wish to pass this on to a work place that you feel may be interested in supporting the Animal Centre.

Volunteer Information

AimsTo assist in the care of cats at the Animal Centre under the supervision of a member of staff and assist with administration as directed.

Tasks and Responsibilities:• Prepare and provide food and water for the cats in the cattery as instructed by a member of staff

• Clean, disinfect and maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness of cat pods in the cattery and general work areas

• Attend to the exercise, socialising and grooming needs of the cats

• Follow all health and safety rules and procedures and ensure that all accidents or incidents are reported immediately to the supervisor on duty

• Work with staff members and other volunteers and trainees

• Carry out adoptions if and when appropriate training is given and only if authorised by the supervisor on duty

• Assist with the handling of cats for the purpose of examination and treatment

• Assist with the up keep of animal records

Additional Notes• All cats must remain inside the cattery at all times and only removed from their pods with permission

from the supervising member of staff

• The centre reserves the right to restrict volunteer access to the cattery or certain areas within the cattery at any time for the purpose of preventing cross infection and the spread of disease

• Volunteers must not handle medication or administer any medication to any animal unless authorised to do so by the supervisor on duty

• Volunteers must not carry out the micro chipping or vaccination of any animal unless authorised to do so by the supervisor on duty and the correct veterinary training has been given

Cattery Assistant/Feline Friend

AimsTo assist in the care of small animals in the Rabbit Retreat (mainly rabbits and guinea pigs) and assist with administration as directed.

Tasks and Responsibilities:• Prepare and provide food and water for animals housed in the Rabbit Retreat as instructed by a member of

staff

• Clean, disinfect and maintain high standards of hygiene and cleanliness of accommodation units and general work areas

• Attend to the exercise, socialising and grooming of animals as necessary and as instructed


• Work with staff members, other volunteers and apprentices

• Carry out adoptions if and when appropriate training is given and only if authorised by the supervisor on duty

• Assist in the handling of animals for the purpose of examination and treatment

• Assist in the up keep of animal records

Additional Notes• All animals must remain within the unit unless instructed otherwise by a member of staff

• The centre reserves the right to restrict volunteer access to the unit or parts of the unit for the purpose of preventing cross infection and the spread of disease

• Volunteers must not handle or administer any medication unless authorised to do so by the supervisor on duty

Small Animal Assistant



AimsTo assist the Animal Centre and its staff with the exercising and socialising of dogs

Tasks and Responsibilities:• To walk dogs as directed by a member of staff and as agreed by the supervisor on duty

• Ensure the dog is kept on a lead unless agreed it may run freely on the exercise field or as directed by a member of staff

• Assist with the assessment or training programme of a dog as directed by a member of staff

• Follow the dog walking procedures


• Use all appropriate equipment as instructed and provided and return it at the end of your session

• Work with staff members, other volunteers and apprentices

Additional Notes• Volunteers must only walk dogs appropriate to training received and must be aware some may be

unsuitable for walking due to temperament or illness

• The centre reserves the right at any time to place a stop on dog walking for the purposes of preventing cross infection and the spread of disease

Dog Walker/Canine Companion

Dog walking can be a rewarding way to volunteer. However we would ask you to consider the following points before applying. The following list of positives and negatives has been drawn up by current volunteers and RSPCA staff so is a true picture of what is involved.

Positives• Spending time with different dogs and getting to know their personalities

• Keeps you fit

• Rewarding, especially when a dog’s behaviour shows improvement

• Dogs enjoy it and it makes their day more interesting

• Provides a good opportunity to learn about and observe dog behaviour

• Provides a good opportunity to learn about equipment and training aids

• Builds up your confidence of handling different dogs

• Opportunity to talk and learn from RSPCA staff

• Allows dogs to socialise with each other and with people

• Enables the general public to see dogs away from the kennel

Negatives• Tiring/physically demanding

• Cold and wet in winter

• Too hot in summer

• Dirty

• Sore hands from dog leads and pulling dogs

• Dogs jumping up – bruised arms and legs

• Need to be strong to handle some of the larger dogs

• Picking up dog mess

• Smelling of dogs etc at the end of the day

• Dogs can sometimes be aggressive with one another

• Torn clothes

• Can be frustrating if a dog won’t respond to you

In general dog walking requires a good level of fitness. Calmness and patience is needed as well as confidence with dogs of all sizes and temperaments. You will receive the appropriate training to handle dogs and all our dogs are graded for different abilities.

AimsTo assist the Animal Centre and its staff with the socialising

and training of puppies.

Tasks and Responsibilities• Introduce and accustom puppies to being handled,

groomed and examined

• Introduce puppies to the application and wearing of a

collar and lead

• To accustom puppies to walking on a lead

• Introduce and habituate puppies to meeting other

animals

• Introduce and habituate puppies to various situations,

buildings and objects

• Provide play and mental and physical stimulation

• To introduce and teach basic commands such as sit,

down, stand, easy and off by following the centre’s

Puppy Training Notes

• Assist with individual training programmes as directed

by a member of staff

• Assist with the assessment of puppies and recording of information

• To give positive attention and affection to puppies

• Follow all health and safety rules and procedures and ensure that all accidents and incidents are reported

immediately to the supervisor on duty

• Use all appropriate training equipment as instructed and return it at the end of your session

Additional Notes• All puppies must remain on site at all times unless permission is given to take puppies off site

• Volunteers must only work with puppies allocated by a member of staff and must be aware that some may

not be able to be worked with due to illness or other factors

• The centre reserves the right at any time to restrict volunteer access to the puppy unit or parts of the

puppy unit for the purpose of preventing cross infection and the spread of disease

Puppy Socialiser

AimsTo assist the Animal Centre with carrying out pre and post home visits to ensure that all animals re-homed by the RSPCA are placed in suitable homes.

Tasks and Responsibilities• To carry out home visits in accordance with the RSPCA re-homing procedures and guidelines

• To report to the Home Visit Coordinator

• To attend training and meetings as required

• To be aware of the particular needs of an animal

• Inform the centre immediately of any concerns

• To complete the necessary documentation neatly and return to the Coordinator on completion of a visit

• To carry with you on all visits your RSPCA Volunteer Identity Card and return it to the RSPCA on resignation/expiry

• To offer appropriate advice and support to new owners

• Maintain the confidentiality of the centre and any personal data

• To promote the Animal Centre in a positive manner

Home Visitor



AimsTo assist the Manager and the Animal Centre in all fund raising activities and help maintain a positive approach towards the fund raising programme.

Tasks and Responsibilities• To participate in the organisation of fund raising and publicity events for the benefit of the Animal Centre

• To promote public interest in the Animal Centre and help maintain public support through raising awareness of its work and aims

• To help collect donations from the public for the benefit of the Animal Centre

• To help identify and maximise new fund raising opportunities

• To assist with the handling, sorting and storage of donated goods to the Animal Centre

• To maintain the confidentiality of the Trust

• To help ensure the health and safety of all visitors at fund raising events

• To work within the limits of the Charities Act at all times

Wednesday 11th January

7am. Today I feel like staying in bed – the weather is dull and rainy, a typical winter’s day.I know however if I don’t go in today other people will have to work twice as hard and the animals won’t get as much attention as they deserve. That thought pulls me out of bed and spurs me on for another day at the Animal Centre.

Its 8.15 by the time I arrive - just time for a cup of tea before starting work at 8.30am.I open the door to my kennel block to the familiar smell of dog poo and the intense noise of barking dogs waiting to be fed and let out.

I say hello to them all and check them over. Max doesn’t look too good – he’s a twelve year old Labrador who was abandoned by his owner. He was very thin when the Inspectors brought him in and his condition is poor. Today he won’t get out of bed or eat his food. He seems very lethargic and confused. He’ll have to see the Vet. Another dog has had diarrhoea all over their kennel, blankets are covered in it and so are the walls. I’ll look forward to cleaning that one (not!).

I let the dogs out into their runs. This is where I get all my bruises from – the dogs are so pleased to see me they practically bounce off me in the morning. Some have no manners at all and even try to hang off my hair. I give them all a brief cuddle but that’s all the time I can spare for now, as all those dirty kennels are waiting to be cleaned. People assume you just walk dogs all day, they don’t realise that a major part of it is cleaning up after them. So, the hard work begins – bending, lifting, scrubbing, washing, disinfecting, rinsing, mopping, the list is endless, just to make sure germs don’t spread and the dogs stay healthy. Oh and did I mention picking up all that poo? Poo of all consistencies, from dogs that have been confined all night – get the picture?

After cleaning inside the kennel block, its time to let the dogs back in and start on the outside runs. Again I’m bombarded with dogs leaping around covering me with dirty, wet paw prints and you always get some that stand in a pile of poo before jumping up at your back!

10.30 am. Break time. I’ve only been here two hours and my once clean uniform smells like it looks and I’m cold and wet. I’ll warm up over break time but then it’s back out there.

I’m wondering how Max is getting on at the Vets, we should get some news soon. I am so thankful that wehave our own vet and surgery on site.

Meanwhile we are open to the public and someone wants to look at Molly - a two year old collie cross. I go through all the forms and everything seems like a good match so I introduce them on the field. After twenty minutes the family agree they’d like to take her. I can’t help but shout hurray - she’s been here for over two months. It’s the best part of the job matching new owners to dogs and seeing them go home. It makes all that hard work seem worthwhile.

First of all the dogs to walk is Zeus and I need to do his training programme. Zeus is a Doberman and a handful. He gets so excited on his walks he tries to bite his lead, your hands, your coat, anything! We are trying to improve his behaviour before he can go to a new home. Some days you feel you are making progress and other days you’re back to square one, but we’ll keep trying.

A day in the life of an animal care assistant



12.30. Lunch. I’m starving and another chance to warm up.My Manager breaks the news of Max to me. The Vet has decided to put him to sleep. His condition has deteriorated and he collapsed at the Surgery. I take a deep breath as I feel the tears coming. I know it’s the kindest thing for him but I am angry at his owners for allowing his last days to be at an Animal Centre and turning their backs on him when he needed them most. At least we showed him love and affection in his last few days and that thought comforts me.

I go and play in the run with my favourite dogs, Jack and Phoebe in an attempt to lift my mood. It works. They cover me in licks and Jack sits on my knee for his cuddle. I know that despite the downsides to this job there are plenty of positives and I’ll try even harder to find these two a new home. My play time is interrupted and I am called to collect a litter of six puppies from reception. Their owner hadn’t realised the bitch was pregnant and had never thought to get her spayed. This is her third litter. Some people never learn.

The pups smell of vomit, they’ve been sick on the way here and they’re all covered in it. Bath time!The pups are routinely wormed, deflead and vaccinated before going over to the puppy unit where they will be monitored for the next few days. I smell even worse now!

Its time to get my dogs ready for the evening. Meals to prepare, medication to collect, more poo to pick up and beds to make. By 4pm I let them back into their kennels and switch on their heat lamps. They settle down quickly after they’ve been fed – most know the routine by now, a sign they’ve been here too long. I give them all a treat before shutting up the block and tell them I’ll see them in the morning.

Tomorrow Chris comes in. She’s a volunteer who comes in every Thursday. I look forward to Thursdays as I know with Chris’s help we’ll be able to spend a lot more time with the animals. Volunteers make such a difference.

In general terms the aims of the RSPCA are to prevent cruelty to animals, promote kindness to animals and to

promote and practise the five freedoms which are:

• freedom from hunger and thirst

• freedom from fear and distress

• freedom to express natural behaviour

• freedom from disease, injury and illness

• freedom from discomfort

The aims of this particular Animal Centre are as follows:

• to take in and offer temporary accommodation for animals brought in by the general public and the

RSPCA Inspectorate

• to give every animal a fair chance of being re-homed

• to provide safe, comfortable accommodation for the animals it houses

• to provide the correct nutrition for its animals

• to provide veterinary treatment as advised by the consulting veterinary surgeon

• to neuter all dogs, cats and rabbits before re-homing or as advised by the consulting veterinary surgeon

• to microchip all dogs, cats and rabbits before re-homing

• to maintain levels of hygiene so as to prevent the outbreak of disease and spread of infection

• to maintain and improve the general health and condition of its animals

• to exercise its animals and provide opportunities for socialisation and play

• to assess and monitor the behaviour and health of its animals

• to train, retrain and attempt to rehabilitate animals where necessary

• to release animals back into the wild where appropriate to do so

• to reunite lost animals with their owners

• to find unwanted animals suitable and permanent new homes and to re-home in a responsible manner so

as to try and ensure the safety of the public and other animals

• to give appropriate advice, information and support to new owners and fosterers

• to assess all prospective new owners in accordance with its equal opportunities policy and carry out home

visits as necessary before and after adoption

• to promote responsible pet ownership and set a good example to the general public

• to work with and maintain effective relations with other animal welfare organisations and professional

bodies

We are writing to see if your company and employees could in some way offer support to our charity. The RSPCA Radcliffe Animal Centre Trust is an independent charity. It is a separately registered charity from that of the national RSPCA, although we work together to achieve animal welfare aims and objectives. We receive no financial assistance from the national lottery or government and we must raise all our own funds, relying on donations from local people and businesses given directly to the centre at Radcliffe.

For nearly 60 years the Animal Centre at Radcliffe has been responsible for the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of thousands of abandoned and neglected dogs, cats and other animals. We work alongside the RSPCA inspectors to support those animals involved in legal cases and provide these rescued animals with the care and security they need.

We strive to provide both the physical care and mental stimulation they need for their rehabilitation in order to support them for their lives beyond the centre. With onsite veterinary facilities and a team of dedicated staff and volunteers our animals receive the best of care.

Last year we rescued, rehabilitated and re-homed over 700 animals and this number continues to rise year on year.

Support is vital to ensure we can continue our work, caring for animals both at the centre and within our community.

Corporate volunteering and support provides a unique opportunity for companies like yourself, to develop team building and communication skills amongst employees, all whilst making a difference to lives of the animals in our care.

Through corporate days, we have managed to complete major projects such as landscaping and maintenance work. This helps us to ensure our centre is a pleasant and attractive site to visit to adopt an animal and for our many volunteer dog walkers to enjoy with our residents. Without this support, work like this is simply not possible.

By working together, in return we could offer some hands on animal contact for a real insight into and connection with our work. Hands on contact with animals can provide your company with an opportunity recognised to help de stress employees.
