Our volunteers handbook

Hello and Welcome

Thank you for choosing ………..

A little BIT ABOUT US

LV2 is a Service-Learning journey that integrates meaningful volunteering

service with instruction and reflection to enrich the learning experience,

develop skills, meet new people, practice social responsibility that

strengthen our community.

Through Service Learning you can: Take on a challenge - Getting

involved in something new can be

a real challenge. Volunteering can

help you achieve personal goals,

develop new skills and practice

your talents. It may even help you

to discover a hobby or interest you

were unaware of.

1.

2.

Be part of your community –

volunteering can help build

stronger communities, get in-

volved in your community and

feel part of something outside

your family or circle of friends.

3. Meet new people - Getting in-

volved as a volunteer will allow

you to meet lots of different kinds

of people and make new friends.

4.

Sense of Wellbeing – Re-

search demonstrates that volun-

teering can lead to better

health.

5.

Have fun - Most volun-teers get great enjoyment from what they do - that's why they keep on doing it.

6.

Service Learning is a two

way process - As you serve

others, the learning that you

gain, would enrich your own

personal lives as well as oth-

ers.

Things to think ABOUT BEFORE YOU VOLUNTEER

Before you begin volunteering there are a number of things you should

think about to help you find a volunteering role that is right for you.

Why are you doing it? If you are clear about why you want to vol-

unteer then you are more likely to know what you want to do. All volunteers are motivated to some extent by the notion of wanting to do something positive for their community but often there is more to it than that. If you are doing work that inter-ests you, you are more likely to give more to your volunteering role and to get more out of it.

What do you want to do?

Think about the type of activ-ity that interests you or something that you would enjoy doing.

How much time can you give?

Can you make a regular commitment or do

you want to get involved for a shorter pe-

riod of time? Time commitments can vary

from a one off event or specific project, to

several hours each week or month, to a full

time commitment. Be realistic about how

much time you can spare and over what pe-

riod of time. Do not over commit yourself.

What skills do you have to offer?

You may have certain skills or talents that you

would like to put to use in the course of your

volunteering, for example, financial skills, musi-

cal ability or IT skills or perhaps you are a good

listener or enjoy caring for people. You should

think about these skills when considering what

role you would like to do. There are many vol-

untary positions, which require no special skills

or talents and many more where training is pro-

vided.

This handy little book helps you keep tabs on how many hours of volunteering you have already done, the activities you have been involved in, as well as letting you note down reflections of learning and experiences gained, and the skills you've developed .

You also get to keep your Record Book after you get your certificate to help remind you of what you're volunteering involved, and can be useful when filling out college, univer-sity or work applications. This Record keeping is not compulsory, but allows you to keep an up to date and signed off record of involvment. It allows us to review the hours served as part of our Volunteer Award & Appreciation & as impact of volunteers on our service. If you are about any part of your Record Book and don't know how to complete it or you think you have misplaced your Record Book then get in touch with us by email: [email protected] or tel : 2457452. The Record Book has Four Main Sections that help you plan, review and assess your vol-unteering; to make sure that you get the most out of your volunteering and use the skills and experience you gain in that may have led to personal when it comes to filling out your college/university applications or applying for jobs. The sections are:

Plan of action: Volunteering is not just about helping other people; we hope you get

something from it too! Use this section to have a think about what you would like

to do and what skills you would like to develop which support your learning and ex-

periences to date. Perhaps this is your chance to get new experience in something

brand new!

Opportunities & Challenges: You may be asked to do lots of different things. Make

sure you take a few minutes to record the details about the different activities you

are involved in - take the chance to make you log book shine!

Reflection & Review: This is the time to sit down by yourself/ team or Volunteer

team leader to see how things are going, relating to your journey in Service Learn-

ing.

SEARCH THROUGH What services have I provided for the community or service users? How have they benefited? How did I feel? What have I enjoyed the most? What did I do well? Is there anything I don't like? What could have been done better? Did my feelings change over time?

TALK THROUGH Similarities & Differences in Experience

WORK THROUGH: Values

Caring with Compassion Accepting & Appreciating Differences Respecting one another Encouraging one another with Enthusiasm

WALK THROUGH

- what can I take from this experience? Have I identified anything I would like to do, improve on or find out more about

in the future? How does this relate to my personal interests and future employment and edu-

cation interests? Days & hours: This is an opportunity for you to record your hours and the programme

within which you volunteered. You can record all the time you have volunteered through-

out the year in this section and the total will enable you to gain an appropriate recogni-

tion.
