The PHCC National Auxiliary has benefit- ed greatly from you as leaders and will continue to benefit from your continued support in the future. This years’ theme, “Sewing the Seeds of Prosperity” comes from several different thoughts: The Nebraska Auxiliary has sewn quilts for many, many years as one of their fundraisers for scholarships, hence the word “sewing,” plus Nebraska has a “sower of seeds” at the top of the capitol building in Lincoln. The word “seed” was chosen for the farming com- munity in Nebraska and the “planting the seed ideas” that our members come up with. It also represents the “green” movement of taking better care of our world. “Prosperity” was chosen as a positive move forward attitude that our Auxiliary and Contractor Members have had since the beginning of this great organization, and will help our members over- come the financial hardships that have hit this country and go forth and prosper. Updating Education videos and focusing on the middle school ages (grades 6-8) will be one of the projects our education committee will be coordinating with the PHCC contractor members. We all know how important it is to capture the next generation of Professional Plumbers and HVAC Technicians to protect the health and welfare of this great country’s citizens. In closing I would like to thank all of my fellow NE PHCC Auxiliary and Contractor friends who helped support me throughout the years and were able to attend the National Con- vention for my installation. I would like to THANK ALL OF MY FAMILY who has always been there for me and especially my husband, Terry, for introducing me to the PHCC family. We had a great time in Las Vegas, as it was another fabulous convention and ku- dos to the National PHCC office for all their hard work in planning it. BYLAWS REVISION This convention it was time to do our complete Bylaws revision. It is done approximately every 5 years in order to keep our rules current and appropriate. The committee cleaned up the Bylaws by moving much of the officer and committee duties to the Duties and Procedures manual. It is now a more condensed, understandable document. The revision was passed unanimously at the Auxiliary general business meeting in Las Vegas. The new Bylaws are now being published. Look for your Bylaws to be delivered to you soon!

AUXILIARY LUNCHEON

This year’s Auxiliary Luncheon was a fabulous event! Included in this year’s luncheon were the presentations of the Robert Cox Awards, the 3-D Awards, and the presentation of Honorary Member-ships to Dennis Broderick and Virginia Carlson. In addition, for our 90

th Anniversary celebration, we

had special entertainment provided by Dan Horn and his cast of several. Dan is an award winning ventriloquist who kept us all in stitches with his amazing talents. We also had a very successful and fun silent auction, with a special drawing for a gold faucet charm (won by Gail McWilliams of Illinois)

. This event has become very exciting and well attended over the past few years. It is always fun and

entertaining, and a highlight of the convention. Thanks to Bob Sinton and the Training Center,

Quackenbush Co., Inc., and the NJ PHCC Auxiliary for their sponsorship!

ANNUAL STATE LEADERSHIP MEETING The annual State Leadership meeting took place at the National convention in Las Vegas, NV on October 29, 2010. At the meeting we discussed ways to engage more Auxiliary members when they attend National Convention and through-out the year to make them feel more comfortable. Discussion was brought up on ways to increase Auxiliary Membersip. It was mentioned that approx. 80% of contractors in Illinois are Auxiliary members. We also discussed possibly calling sen-iors when their memberships have become delinquent. The topic was brought up about states not always enforcing the 3-tier membership and that we need to be firm and diplomatic in supporting the 3-tier structure. It may be that some time in the future National would collect dies for all organizations and pay states.

PAST PRESIDENTS REPORT I want to thank everybody who helped make connects 2010 in Las Vegas a very success-ful 90

th anniversary meeting. We had many interesting and fun functions this year. At the

annual meeting Dorothy Linek from St. Louis, Missouri, President 1989-1990 asked that her Past Presidents Pin be used by another Past President and I was honored to accept this pin. It is wonderful to think this pin has traveled the world with her and I hope it will travel the world with me – now that I have more time. We had an exciting Auxiliary Luncheon over 100 members and sponsors attended, with a record amount being brought in during the auction and an excellent ventriloquist for our entertainment. This past year has been a wonderful, exciting and quick year as your president. Thank you all for your support of the PHCC National Auxiliary. We created a 90

th Anniversary Journal and if you would like a copy please contact me at [email protected]. I will send

one to you. See you in Minneapolis Sept 21-24 for Connects 2011.

LIFE MEMBER’S BREAKFAST By Corinne Riley, President

Once again we thank Lake Chemical Co. (LACO) for sponsoring our breakfast and were disappointed that a representative could not be with us, but thank them for all their years of support.. This year we welcomed Stacey Harp and Pat Blank to our Life Members Club. Of course for Pat she was a member as a secretary but now as a Past President. We caught up on news from our members that could not attend. We were thrilled to see Dorothy Linek (now 90 years young) at convention, she could not attend the breakfast but with lots of emotion donated her Past President’s pin back to the Auxiliary and pinned it on to Pat Blank the out going President. She also donated back her Life Member charm to be

used as we need. Thank you Dorothy. Minutes and updated member lists will be in the mail in January thanks to our Secretary Judy Driscoll.

PATTY JONES AUXILIARY TREASURER As incoming treasurer, I have been asked to prepare some background information on myself for the members. I am a native Houstonian and although I have moved several times, I have never lived more than 100 miles from my hometown. My first involvement in the plumbing industry came in 1966 when Bill and I married. We were teen-agers, he in his apprenticeship and I in business school. By the early 70’s, we were parents of our two sons, Ray and Stephen, and I was a stay at home mom. As soon as Stephen, our younger son, started pre-school, I re-turned to school and studied interior design, something in which I have always been interested. During this time, I was a volunteer mom in my children’s classes as well as volunteering in my Church. Some would say I had a spring loaded right arm, always up. In 1979, Bill and I formed Raven Mechanical and my “involvement” in the plumbing industry became a “commitment” and my stay at home mom days were in my past. Initially, my position in the company was multi-functional and simultane-ous: receptionist, P/R, A.P., A.R., etc. As the company grew, others were hired to fill these positions and I finally settled into controller and CFO. On the personal side, our sons were growing and becoming very busy not only with school, but with extracurricular activities. It was school, soccer team, swim team, scouts, band etc. volunteering and joining all the related activities on the parent side. . . still serving in our Church, and working full time. It was at the end of their high school and the beginning of their college years that we joined PHCC. As an Auxiliary member, I have served on both the local and state level, sometimes repeating an office. On the national level, I have served on the long range planning committee, and was a zone director. Currently, I am on the Board of Governors of the National Educational Foundation and serve on the curriculum committee and the chairman’s advisory council. Through it all, Bill and I have been very blessed. We are now semi-retired, and are able to enjoy our three grandchil-dren, who thankfully live only a few miles from us. Volunteering fills much of my time and has almost become my second career. We have enjoyed traveling and spend as much time as possible at our second home in Galveston. I am looking forward to serving the Auxiliary as its treasurer. I have been reassured by many that this is a really easy job. . .and some have told me that this is the worst job ever. Well, maybe it'somewhere in between. I do know that I am in

HEIDI EVERLY MARKETING SECRETARY

I have been married to my husband, Keith for 22 year. We have 2-children- Alex -21 who is currently in college and Kaylee-17 a senior in high school. Our home is in Fremont, Nebraska. I also joined PHCC in 1996 and have enjoyed serving in various positions on the state board ever since. My most recent term as President was in 2008-2010. I come from a very large family- 5 brothers and 9 sisters. One of my favorite passtimes is shopping, which I enjoy doing with my sisters. I also enjoy playing volleyball, reading, and watching Nebraska Football! GO HUSKERS! I

SANDY STACK AUXILIARY VICE PRESIDENT I served as Auxiliary National President in 1997-1998. Boy, I wish I knew then, what I know now. Thank you, for having the confidence to elect me for a second time around. Although, I have contin-ued to serve in many positions, the Executive Board was the most challenging and the most reward-ing. Many of you know that I moved to Washington State, almost 19 years ago, from Virginia. After meet-ing the love of my life, Jim Stack (now, Past-National PHCC President) at a Leadership Conference at Tyson’s Corner. We were married in 1997 and have a combined family of 5 adult children (his 3 boys and my 2 girls). Now, we have been blessed with 6 grandchildren, ranging in age from 13 to 3. I have been a licensed real estate agent since 1986. A few years ago, I became an Associate Broker with Realty Execu-tives International. I am still involved with Stack Plumbing, Inc and the PHCC Contractors of Washington State. We all know that the best part of this association is the relationships you make across the country. I look forward to “Sewing the Seeds of Prosperity” with President Barb and her board. Thank you!

GAIL MCWILLIAMS MEMBERSHIP SECRETARY

I am happy to serve as membership secretary. I hope you have already heard from me as one of my first duties was to send out dues invoices in December. Last year as Zone 3 Director I enjoyed meeting more Auxiliary members and reconnecting with those I haven’t seen for awhile. When I married John over 30 years ago, I married into a longtime PHCC family and began my involvement with the Illinois Auxiliary. I recently served a 3-year term on National Scholarship Committee. I found that particularly rewarding since I am a teacher. I have taught French, English, and Spanish at the junior high and high school levels, including a time of teaching English as a second language in Merida, Venezuela. I am currently teaching Spanish at a small independent school where I have classes for all ages, kindergarten through 8

th grade.

That was a real switch for me, but I love it. I have a stepdaughter, Kelli, and stepson, Korey, and thanks to them, seven grandchildren. John and I enjoy spending time on our sailboat which was actually our home for almost 10 years.

Zone 4 Director Terri Linek, St. Louis, Missouri Hello from Colorado, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Utah and Nevada! I am happy to serve as the new Zone Director for Zone 4. A huge thanks to Pat Kreifels for all her hard work over her terms as Zone Director. She can put up her feet, relax and enjoy Barb’s year as President! Well maybe not put up her feet and relax, but I hope she can enjoy the next year! I wish Barb and her Board a successful year. I hope I can contrib-ute to that year by helping keep the Auxiliary a viable tool to promoting the success of our industry. I am a Life Member of the Auxiliary and have seen so many changes over my years of membership. I am honored to continue giving to the Auxiliary and promoting this industry which has given so much to me and my family. My husband is the 3

rd generation in his family’s business, which started in 1916. We are married 34 years and have 2 beauti-

ful children, Alexandria – 19 and Jacob – 12. We love to garden, hike, camp, cook, hunt, fish, play with our dogs, take care of our chickens, volunteer with church, school, our Lions Clubs, Boy Scouts and the PHCC. I look forward to helping the Auxiliary remain strong into the next decade!

Kathy Tindall – Zone Director I am honored to become the new Zone Director for New Jersey, Pennsylvania, West Virginia and Ohio. I am Kathy Tin-dall from Robbinsville, New Jersey. I have served as President and Secretary at the State Level. At the National Level I have served as the Membership Secretary, Recording Secretary and President as well as sat on numerous committees. My husband of 32 years Kevin Tindall is currently the National Contractors Secretary to President Frank Maddalon. I have two grown daughters, Heather who is married and owns her own photography company and Nicole who is in medi-cal school. I am looking forward to working with the state members and continuing our goal of promoting our industry.

Zone 2 Director Debbie McMahon Debbie McMahon became a Zone 2 director this year at the PHCC National Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada. As Zone Director she hopes to fulfill her duties as assigned by the national board to the best of her abilities. Debbie was born in Pennsylvania but has resides in Delaware for the past 38 years. She graduated from Goldey Bea-com Junior College with an associate’s degree in Accounting and continued her education at the University of Delaware. She has been employed by The Briggs Company, an industrial distributor, for 38 years and is Vice President of Finance. Debbie has been married for 31 years to Tim McMahon who is a master plumber and HVAC technician for his own com-pany Mongoose Mechanical Inc. They have two children, Brian (28) and Bonnie (24). Brian and his wife Amelia are ex-pecting their first child in December. Debbie has been a member of the National and Delaware Auxiliaries for the past 20 years. At the state level she has served as Treasurer and President.

By Gerry Kennedy PHCC Executive Vice President

Can you believe that 2010 went by so quickly? The year was a good one for PHCC, and we appreciate all the help the Auxiliary provided along the way. In particular, a huge thank you goes out to the Auxiliary for your help in making the Oct. 27-30 CONNECT 2010 a success. In addition to the Auxiliary’s regular pro-grams and participation, your 90

th anniversary celebration added a very special element to the week’s activi-

ties. And by the way, the PHCC staff was very appreciative of your thank you note about CONNECT 2010 and the wonderful holiday lunch you helped make possible. A quick update on what activities are coming up as 2011 begins…

At the end of January, the PHCC Board of Directors will meet in Philadelphia. We’ll look forward to hearing from Auxiliary

President Barb Kreifels, who will update us on all Auxiliary activities. A very beneficial PHCC long-range planning session will be held during this meeting.

In case you have not heard, Charles “Chuck” White is PHCC’s new technical director. He’ll be developing and presenting

technical programs to help PHCC members understand and embrace emerging technical and code issues. White, a third-generation owner in a fourth-generation business, has an extensive background in the mechanical/electrical field. There’s no doubt he will make an excellent technical resource for our members and chapters.

When the new Congress arrives in January, PHCC will be actively involved in lobbying for p-h-c members’ interests.

These include pushing for repeal of the 1099 reporting requirements and permanent repeal of the estate tax. We’ll also con-tinue to monitor issues that affect our members’ businesses, such as a potential DOE rule that could effectively ban multiple head showers and, of course, the complex health care reform legislation.

We’ll be busy planning the 2011 Legislative Conference, which will be held May 11-12, 2011, at the Key Bridge Marriott

in Arlington, Va. We hope Auxiliary members will come out in full force!

Planning is already under way for CONNECT 2011, which will take place Sept. 21-24th at the Hilton Minneapolis in Min-

neapolis, Minn. By partnering with the Auxiliary and Quality Service Contractors, CONNECT 2011 will feature more of the top-notch education and networking opportunities associated with the CONNECT events. We hope to see all of you there. We’ll also be continuing our “Without PHCC, You Stand Alone” membership recruitment/retention program throughout the year and appreciate the Auxiliary’s support in spreading this message.

The Season of Thanks & Giving Our thanks to the Auxiliary members who helped to make the 2010 Invest in Your Future fundraising campaign a success, with another $25,000 from the campaign helping to fund Auxiliary scholarships this year. InSinkErator and Ferguson again provided contribution matching funds, making gifts go even farther. Remember, the 2011 campaign will be starting soon and we will need your help again to ensure the fund-raiser’s success. Please plan ahead and make your 2011 campaign pledge now, either a personal gift or a combined gift with the other members of your local Auxiliary chapter. Make your pledge by calling the PHCC Educational Foundation at (800) 533-7694 or by visiting www.foundation.phccweb.org/invest.

Your 2011 membership dues invoices went out in mid December, 2010. If you have not received yours, please contact Gail McWilliams at [email protected] or call 217-384-5121. Thank you to all of you for your continued support. Your dues and donations cover our yearly expenses and are essential for us to continue our marketing work for the PHCC and our industry. If you know of friends, family members, office workers, or anyone who would like to support the Auxiliary, please invite them to join. You can download an application on the website. Go to phccweb.org, look under “About Us, then “Auxiliary”

for all important information.

“You Can’t Do It Alone”

By Frank Maddalon, PHCC President

F.R. Maddalon Plumbing & Heating, Hamilton, N.J.

Throughout my career, education, training and involvement—all available through PHCC—have been very im-

portant to me. I know firsthand how these can result in success for a business owner.

As I tell young people thinking of entering the p-h-c trade, “You can’t do it alone.” I didn’t think I needed PHCC

when I opened my business, but after attending a few PHCC meetings and seeing what was accomplished legisla-

tively on a local, state and national level, I was sold. How could I make that kind of impact on my own? I be-

came a believer in PHCC.

We’d like for all plumbing and HVACR contractors to make the same realization. In fact, our current membership recruitment

theme is “Without PHCC, You Stand Alone.”

To reinforce that message, I have identified these goals during my year in office:

Recruitment of new members and retention of existing members We need to get the message out about the true value of membership and all we have to offer. With all the information, advocacy,

education and networking we offer, PHCC is one of the best investments out there for contractors who belong and participate.

Enhance our presence on Capitol Hill There are movements under way in Washington to hamper the growth of small business. We need to make sure the PHCC contrac-

tors’ voice is heard—and get our members involved in the process at the same time. Everyone—from our largest member to the

one-man shop—is affected by what happens on Capitol Hill

Education and training After 10 years as chairman of the PHCC apprenticeship committee, I have seen the benefits of good training, and education is a

must for the future of our industry. Through good times and bad, it is crucial that p-h-c contractors continue to invest in training

and education, and PHCC is the perfect place to find those programs.

Involvement Contractors are so busy these days. We need to make sure they see the value and make the time to be involved in association activi-

ties. Speaking for myself, I know I would not have come this far without PHCC.

How can this all be accomplished? This association is 128 plus years old. It has survived that long because we have members who

participate at all levels. The Auxiliary plays an important role in all of our efforts. We appreciate your support, and look forward to

working with you in 2011.

EDUCATION FOUNDATION BOARD By Ann Rivers

It has been my privilege to serve on the new Education Foundation Board. I attended the Board Meet-ing held in April at the Marriott Key Bridge Hotel in Arlington, VA. Cindy Sheridan was elected as its Chief Operating Officer. She replaced Dr. Gerry Kennedy in this position. The Foundation worked hard this year to obtain their goal for scholarships. I was on the Workforce Committee this past year. I participated in all conference calls. We had many discussions on how to get more skilled workers in the Plumbing Heating and Air profession. This includes getting young people interest-ed at the high school level. Tom Applegate was the lead person on our committee. The Foundation already offers business management training resources for senior management and business owners. It is offering some new online journeyman training this fall. Through the Kohler Seminar Series they are offering Resi-dential Fire Sprinkler training in partnership with Fire Smarts. The Foundation has awarded over $35,000 in scholar-ships this year. On October 27, I attended the last Foundation Meeting as a board member. The meeting was held at the Paris Hotel, in Las Vegas, Nevada. Pat Blank is now the new representative for the Auxiliary. I hope that she will enjoy it as much as I have the past year.
