Dylan experienced a brachial plexusinjury to his left arm during delivery. The condition, also known as Erb's Palsy, occurs when something causes a babyto remain stationary during the birthprocess and the resulting pressure onthe shoulder stretches, pinches, tearsor even severs vital nerves. In Dylan'scase, his left shoulder became "stuck,"and the resulting nerve damage lefthim unable to use his left arm exceptfor a little movement of his left wrist. When Dylan was only 13 days old,
Jessica and Jonathan took their sonto The Gregory Kistler TreatmentCenter For Children, Inc. to receivean assessment of his condition. Theyoung parents already knew the nameof his disorder and had a generalunderstanding of his prognosis - bothwith and without intervention - but atthe Center they encountered hope.Ming Chidester, M.S., P.T., who
conducted the assessment, developeda Plan of Care for Dylan that wouldbegin the process to increase the useof his left arm, wrist and hand. Thephysical therapist recommended 45 -minute physical therapy interventionsthree times a week that includedaquatic activities as well as otheractivites, and Dylan's therapy began."He's been in therapy ever since he
was 13 days old, and he was six monthsold when he had a nerve graft fromthe back of his calf repositioned bysurgery in St. Louis to regain functionin his hand," his mother said. The first of a series of ongoing
surgeries to improve his mobility, theprocedure was an important step, especially because, as Jessica pointsout, Dylan retained very good fingerand hand fine motor ability. Thoseskills are evident three years lateras he grabs the handlebars of hisAmTryke's adaptive handles. The AmTryke Therapeutic Tricycle

ready to go," said Jessica, adding thatDylan likes to pop wheelies every nowand then. The AmTryke fits into Dylan's
physical therapy and occupationaltherapy protocols. Physcial therapygoals include developing whole bodybalance and coordination andimproving the strength of his legsas well as specific therapeuticintervention for his shoulder, armand hand. His occupational therapygoals include fine motor skills, pickingup objects, and feeding skills, whichcan be enhanced by various movementsas he works his limbs on the AmTryke. The small AmTryke Dylan rides
is one of three AmTryke versionsavailable. It is fitted with an optionalpush bar that allows his parents toassist Dylan without having to bendfrom a standing position. Like theregular and large therapeutic AmTrykes, Dylan's tricycle is constructedof sturdy steel and has a number ofadaptative options to allow individualsof all ages who are unable to ridetraditional bikes the opportunity toenjoy a ride-on vehicle experience.Adaptative accessories range from
footcups with straps to provideadditional foot support to petalblocks, plates and foot platforms toaccomodate individual special needs.Other adaptative options include seats, seatbacks, head rests, lumbar padsand back rests with lateral support forriders with low muscle tone; handgrips, mitts and wrist and hand wraps; kneeseparators or adductor positioningstraps; and more. Optional AMBUCSAmTryke license plates come withpeel-off letters to let the riderpersonalize his or her ride with theirname. of Dylan, she said."I saw it as a therapy aide for Dylan
for strengthening his active range ofmotion," Ming said. "Truly this is anarm bike. He can't compensate anduse his legs to power the bike becausethere are no pedals. It's perfect forhim. We want him to purely work onhis arm strength."Dylan received one of the first Am
Trykes off the production line and he'sbeen happily using it ever since.Ming is confident he will continue toimprove and gain strength and mobilityas he rides. Jessica agrees and alsoappreciates the opportunity it giveshim to enjoy a basic childhood activity.Jonathan, who is currently looking
for work, and Jessica, who had to dropout of a licensed practical nursingprogram in August, are grateful to aspecial group of people for providingan AmTryke for Dylan. A chapter ofAMBUCS in northwest Arkansasdonated the $500 AmTryke for Dylan. When he outgrows this tryke, it will bereturned to AMBUCS to be passed onto another child and he will receive alarger version.National AMBUCS, Inc., is a non-
