HEARTCRY MISSIONARY SOCIETYThe HeartCry Missionary Society is dedicated to the task of fulfilling the Great Commissionthrough sponsoring national pastors and missionaries in the foreign field. The traditionalmission methods of only training and financing North American missionaries is a slow andcostly process that has not and will not enable us to reach the world. A national pastor ormissionary can be prepared for ministry without years of language training or cultural adjust-ment and at a minimum cost. Therefore HeartCry seeks to work with national pastors andmissionaries to help them evangelize and plant Churches among their own peoples.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSEThe chief end of all mission work is the Glory of God. Our greatest concern is that His Namebe great among the nations, from the rising to the setting of the sun (Malachi 1:11). We findour constant motivation, not in man or his needs, but in God, His commitment to His ownglory and our God-given desire to see Him glorified in every nation, tribe, people and language.

PRINCIPLES OF MINISTRYEvery need of this ministry will be obtained through prayer. We may share our mission-ary vision with others and even make known to them the specific tasks which the Lordhas laid on our heart to do, but we may not raise support through prodding or manipu-lating our brothers and sisters in Christ. If this ministry is of the Lord then He will beour patron. If He is with us, He will direct His people to give and we will prosper. If Heis not with us, we will not and should not succeed. We intend to never enlarge our field of labor by contracting debts. This is contrary toboth the letter and the spirit of the New Testament. In secret prayer, God helping us,we will carry the needs of this ministry to the Lord and act according to the directionthat He gives. We will not compete with other biblical mission agencies, but use the resources that Godhas given to us to work in partnership with them. If the Lord directs, we will sacrificeour own goals and resources that other mission works may be helped and the Kingdomof God increased. In meeting any need, those of us who are supported financially by this ministry will bethe first to sacrifice all things necessary for the will of God and the advancement of HisK i n g d o m .We will not measure the success of this ministry by the amount of money given, Biblesdistributed or national missionaries supported, but by the Lord's blessing on the work.

From theDirectorMY WIFE CHARO AND I HAVE RECENTLY RETURNED from a two

week journey to the great country of Romania. It was awonderfullyexciting and exhausting time. For eight nights Iwas granted grace topreach to crowds of over one thousand at the Holy Trinity BaptistChurch, and the historic RomanianOperaHouse in Bucharest. Thedays seemed to fly by aswe spent our nights preaching and our daysmeeting with pastors, missionaries and new believers. There weremany professions of faith andmuch repentance and renewal amongthebelievers.

As I thinkbackon those twoweeks the one thing I cannot forgetare the faces of thosewho stared back atme aswe drove through thecountry side andwalked through the city streets. The expression ofhopelessness on each face called out to me like the man fromMacedonia. The tired bodies and downcast eyes seem to ask thehaunting question, Is there no onewho cares formy soul? CharlesWesley once penned the cry of his ownheartwhen hewrote, Oh fora thousand tongues to singmygreat Redeemers praise. As I lookedout over the thousands of lost souls in Romania, I thought tomyself,Oh for a thousand tongues to preachmygreatRedeemersGospel!

On the front cover of this issueofHeartCry there stands a churchsteeple that bears both a Cross and a clock. The Cross is that eternalsign of the great redemption bought for Gods people two thousandyears ago on a hill calledCalvary. The clock represents the urgency of

ourmission as the enddrawsnear and eternity stands at the threshold. AsChristians, called to theGreatCommission, theremust be anurgency in our life that compels us to risk our lives tomake theGospel known to theworld and theremust be an urgency in ourmessage that compelsmen to contemplate the end of all things, turn from thisworld andembrace theCross of Christ. AsChristians, we recognize thatGod is sovereign and holds the times and seasons inHis hand. Nevertheless, our understanding of sovereignty should not quench our passion or blind our eyes to theurgency of themoment. We are living in the greatest age of theChristianChurch, with the greatest possibilities andmeans ofmaking theGospel known to our generation. This is no time for sleeping, no time for being lax in the nameofSovereignty. This is a time for action. Thepreachingof theGospel to everynation inourgeneration is no longer anunattainable dream, by faith it camebecome an embraceable reality. With this goal in view, let us heed thewords ofthe apostle Paulwho admonishes us to, Run in such away thatwemaywin. (I Corinthians 9:24)

ATime To PrayFor the SendingForth of MissionariesFather, The harvest is plentiful, but

the workers are few. How shall theybelieve in You whom they have notheard? And how shall they hear with-out a preacher? Father, I beseechyou to send out workers into your har-vest. I offer myself and my family. Here am! Send me! Amen.

For the Proclamationof the GospelFather, I intercede for all those who have

gone out into the world proclaiming theGospel. I pray that you may open up a doorbefore them and they may make the most ofevery opportunity to preach the Word clearlyand with power. Let their speech be sea-soned with grace and their life a beautifuladornment of the Gospel. Amen

For the Conversion of the NationsFather, I pray that you may give the nations as an in-

heritance for your Son. Draw your elect from every na-tion, tribe, people and tongue. Cleanse them from alltheir filthiness and from all their idols. Give them a newheart and put a new spirit within them. Remove theirheart of stone and give them a heart of flesh. Put YourSpirit within them and cause them to be careful to walkin Your statutes and observe Your ordinances. For Yoursis the kingdom and the power and the glory forever.Amen

Florencio Churata is supported byHeartCry and serves with brother AngelColmenares in the northern province of Piura. He travels through the Northern Andes Moun-tains as an itinerant teacher and preacher, training the pastors and laypersons in themost remote areas.

The Lord Jesus Christ touched myheart and life on the 29th of November,1989. That day I was drawn by the Spiritof God and came to Christ, repenting ofmy sins and trusting in Him as Savior. From the moment of my conversion Ilonged to serve God and study His Word.As I began to grow, I sensed that God wascalling me to serve Him as a minister ofthe Gospel.

To surrender to Gods will was a verydifficult decision for me. I knew that theroad to obedience would be a costly one.The people of my village, as well as myfamily, were Catholic and set against the

Gospel of Jesus Christ. My family wasvery poor and my father counted on meto help provide for the rest of my family. There was no seminary near my village andthe poverty of my family prohibited mefrom traveling to the nearest Bible Insti-tute. Because of these great obstacles, Istayed in my village with my family andstudied at the nearby University.

In my first year at the university, Iheld on to the hope that one day Godwould change my circumstances and al-low me to prepare for the ministry. Ithought I was exempt from Gods callbecause there was no way humanly pos-sible to fulfill it, but I was wrong. Throughmy first year of studies God would notleave me alone. There was a relentless callcoming to me from the earth and the heav-ens. I could not escape the vision of theworld and its harvest fields. The harvestwas ready, but it rotted in the field be-cause the worker were few. I could notescape the call from the heavens, hearingGod say day and night, Whom shall I

send and who will go for us?It was at this time that I discovered

that personal circumstances are never anexcuse for not following Gods will or obey-ing the Great Commission. I had to obeyGod regardless of the obstacles and inspite of what it would cost me. I had toplease God rather than men and submitto God rather than to my circumstances. My family was strongly opposed to mydecision and fought me at every turn. Itwas a very sad time for me, but through itall I learned to fear God more than men.In May of 1993, I was forced to leavehome because of my decision to followChrist. I worked on my own and renteda small room with four other young be-lievers in the faith. The room was no largerthan a small bedroom and yet it was wherewe cooked, ate, slept and prayed.

As the months flew by I was readingmy Bible, praying and growing in thethings of God. Then one fateful morn-ing my entire life was changed. At aboutsunrise I heard a knock at the door. Since

we had no heat in our room and it wasextremely cold, no one wanted to get upand go answer the door. But finally theknocking became more desperate and oneof my roommates jumped out of bed andopened the door. When the lamps werefinally lit, I saw my little brother cryinguncontrollably. He fell into my arms cry-ing out, Our father is dead! Our fa-ther is dead! I stood there not fully un-derstanding what had happened and un-able to react. Finally my brother handedme a letter which declared that our fa-

ther had been killed in a landslide in thejungles of Madre de Dios [Mother ofGod] where he was cutting timber. Para-lyzed and numb with cold I stood therecrying like a baby.

I traveled 12 hours in the back of atruck and then walked 8 hours more un-til I arrived at the place where my fatherwas buried under several feet of mud and

debris. The place was so remote that theauthorities did not even attempt to bringin the necessary machinery to remove thedirt or find the bodies of those that wereburied. With my hands, I dug for myfathers body for four days, but finally Icollapsed with exhaustion. Nine monthsearlier my father had left our village tocut wood in the jungle. I had not seen myfather those nine months and realized thenthat I would never see him again. To myknowledge, he died without the Gospelof Jesus Christ and was lost forever. I was

overwhelmed with grief.I returned to my village knowing that

I would have to give up all hope of study-ing or serving God. As the oldest brotherin my family, I had to support my threeyounger brothers and my mother. WhenI arrived, my old pastor came to the houseand told me not to distrust the Lord anddeny my call. He told me that God had

called me to serve Him and that I couldnot turn back as I had done before. Helooked me straight in the eyes and toldme to obey and serve God first and notto think of myself or even my family. Iasked him how I could leave my motherand brothers? Who would feed them andtake care of them? His answer was simple. The God who cared for the widows andthe orphans would do it. This is when Ifinally understood the words of Jesus, Ifanyone wants to follow after me, let himdeny himself, take up his cross and follow

me (Matthew 16:24).For the next few months I stayed in

the village with my family. There weretimes when we had nothing and I cried tothe Lord for our provision. He answeredmy prayers and I began to see that all mydifficulties were part of a greater lesson Ineed to learn -

7FLORENCIO CHURATA

As a boy, Florencio worked with his father carrying lumber from the jungles to the town of Cuzco. When Florencio was inseminary, his father was killed in a mudslide. Florencio spent four days digging alone to recover his fathers body. Under morethan 20 feet of mud and debris, the body was never found.

Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and donot lean on your own understanding. In allyour ways acknowledge Him, and He willmake your paths straight. Proverbs 3:6-6

In the summer of 1994, the day be-fore I had to leave for my studies on thewest coast of Peru, I had no money forthe bus ticket to the seminary or the tu-ition necessary to study, but I had been

trained in faith by the Lords dealings withme and I knew that my heavenly Fatherwould provide. In my poverty and trials,I had learned to trust Him. The day I leftwas painful. My mother cried and mybrothers could not understand why I wasgoing. Their pain caused a great battle torage in my heart, but I knew that Godhad to come first and that I needed totake this cross. That day I left my villagecrying, but three years later I returned withjoy and laughter. For God took care ofmy family while I was gone. They lackednothing to eat or wear the entire time thatI was a way. God is truly a good God,overflowing with mercies and abundantkindness. He is a strong tower and a faith-ful Father who does exceedingly beyondall we ask or think according to His grace.Praise Him! Praise Him!

When I began seminary I had noth-ing, I studied all day and worked all nightand could not give myself to the things ofGod as I desired. But then one day, theseminary director told me that brotherPaul Washer wanted to speak with me. Ihad heard many stories about him, buthad never met him. Brother Washer hadonly talked to me for a few minutes whenhe declared that God was going to pro-vide for my seminary support so that Icould study full time and be about theLords business. He told me that Heart-Cry would help me through the giving ofGods people in other countries. I wasoverwhelmed with joy and dedicated my-

self to being a good steward of Gods good-ness. With the help of HeartCry I wasable to attend seminary, work in the min-istry and even send some money home tohelp my family. It was such a blessing tomeet brother Paul and HeartCry becauseGod used them to help me finish my de-gree in seminary.

After my seminary studies, I went tothe northern province of Piura to workunder Angel Colmenares. I knew that hewas one of the greatest church planters inthe world and I wanted to learn fromhim. He took me in and I began to trainthe mountain pastors in doctrine andbiblical studies. There are many sects andcults and false teachers that are constantlydisturbing the works and therefore it isimportant to teach the mountain pastorsthe truth of Scripture. The pastors areoften times greatly used of God, but theyhave never had the opportunity to studydoctrine. This is why it is so importantthat we teach them so that they may teachothers. I know that God has granted methe privilege of studying in the seminaryso that I can serve others and I do thiswith great joy. I work high up in the AndesMountains and sometimes it is very de-manding on my body, but I thank Godthat He called me in my youth and that Ican use all my strength for His cause.

I still live and minister away from myvillage (about three days riding on a bus),but God continues to help my motherand brothers. One of my brothers is nowliving with me. His name is Joseph Isaac, Ihelp him go to school and provide forwhatever he needs. We are very poor butGod provides for all our needs. I hopethat some day my brother will also becalled of God to serve Him. He is only 13,but loves God. I only pray that he will bea good man and a servant of God.

I want to conclude by thanking thoseof you who support me through Heart-Cry. It is because of you that I am able totravel through the mountains and spendmy life for the cause of Christ. God isworking through you and you are work-ing through me. Every time I preach, youare preaching with me. Every time I winone to Christ, you win them with me.

rancisco and KarenLaos are HeartCry mis-sionaries in the highjungles of Bagua and

among the Aguaruna tribe of Con-dor Canqui in the northern junglesof Peru.

We give thanks to our Lordand Savior Jesus Christ for you.It never ceases to amaze us as tohow He uses you to bless ourlives so that we may in turn be ablessing to others. We rejoicegreatly in you and in the thingsthat God has allowed us to ex-perience together in His work.

During the first weeks ofthis year we ministered amongthe Aguaruna Christians in thejungles of Condor Canqui. Itwas a very difficult and disap-pointing time for us and theAguaruna pastors. We havebeen working with theAguarunas and training theirpastors for more than twoyears, and hoped to begin aPastors Training Institute usingthe material offered by WorldOutreach. But after three daysof meetings we saw that the ma-terial offered by World Out-reach was beyond the reach ofthe Aguaruna pastors. Al-though most of them are bilin-gual, their Spanish is not suffi-cient to grasp many of the theo-logical and ministerial conceptstaught in the material. The pas-tors have such a desire to grow, but the language barrier is toogreat. This wore heavy on theirhearts and the majority of themreturned to their villages down-cast and defeated. As they de-parted, I exhorted them to trustin the Lord and pray. God willshow us the way to set up a train-ing institute among the

Aguaruna. For the next few months I

will be working on putting to-gether an institute with materialthat is less complex and morerelevant to the Aguaruna wayof life. I hope also to enlistDaniel Colmenares andFlorencio Churata to work withme in order to teach the pas-tors in a more effective manner. My heart breaks in two everytime I remember the tears offrustration and pain that I sawon the faces of the Aguarunapastors. Please pray for us andthem, that God may grant usthe wisdom to overcome this dif-ficult problem.

In the middle of the monthof January, we had an evangelis-tic campaign in the city of BaguaGrande. We preached andshowed evangelistic films tomany unbelievers. The peopleof this jungle city are very hardand many are given to great cor-ruption, however we are con-vinced in Gods power to save.In the town of Aserraderowhere Karen and I have ourbase, we continued with ourstudy of the book of Acts. Thestudy is being used by God toencourage the believers to reachout and expect God to do greatthings.

During the month of De-cember we were visited byKarens father who stayed withus for a week and saw the Chris-tian life first hand. We hopeand pray that this will open hiseyes to his great need for Christ. In the mean time we remainyour servants and partners inthe work and we remember youin our prayers with gratitudeand joy.

ino Ortiz is a HeartCry mission-ary working in the prison systemof Asuncion Paraguay. A com-plete article concerning his min-

istry appeared in the January issue of theHeartCry magazine. In the photograph aboveDino is sharing Christ with a young inmatein prison. The following is his bi-monthly re-port.

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ.I greet you in the name of our Lord andask His richest blessings upon you.

In our ministry at the Juvenile Jail inAsuncion we are going through a time ofgreat trials, but our Lord is teaching us tobe determined, to persevere and not bediscouraged by our circumstances. Thesource of our trials is the great opposi-tion that we are facing from the priestwho is in charge of the spiritual andeducational matters in the jail. Becauseof the growth of our Bible studies andthe number of new conversions, he hasnow enlisted the help of two other priests

to work with him in opposing us. Everyday they speak with the boys who havebeen converted in order to confuse themabout their faith. They have also allowedthe Seven Day Adventist to enter theprison in order to create doctrinal con-fusion among the boys. We are allowedonly two hours, two days a week to teachthe boys, while they are given 24 hours aday, 7 days a week. The priest is very strictabout the time we have with our boys andtries to limit us every way he can. Never-theless we cannot complain because it wasGod who opened the doors for us in thefirst place, and it is God who can openthe doors even wider. Please pray thatsomehow we will be given more time towork with the boys who so desperatelyneed Christ. Sometimes the guards takeso long to check me into the jail that Ihave little time left to minister to the boys.Often, I run out of time at the very mo-ment that some of the boys become inter-ested in the discussion. Please pray for

me that I will have wisdom to walk in theSpirit and do that which pleases God.

In spite of the opposition, we havealso experienced blessing from God. Wehave now been allowed to preach the Gos-pel of Jesus Christ in the areas of theprison that before were off limits toprotestants. We now have 18 youngmen that profess Christ as Savior andLord. This past December, we prepareda small Christmas program in which wepreach the Gospel to every inmate andguard in the prison. God made our pro-visions over abound and we were able togive each one a cake. There was a total of420 people who attended and we hadbrought only 400 cakes. We were verysad because we had to leave the prisonwithout giving 20 boys any cake for Christ-mas. But as we were leaving we looked inthe car and found more cakes that wehad not seen! For this, we thanked ourGod and returned to the prison to givethe cakes to the boy. Because of the pro

visions that we shared with the inmatesand guards, many hearts were opened tothe Gospel and five boys made professionsof faith.

One can only imagine what a depress-ing and torturous time that it is for theboy to be locked up and away from theirfamilies during the holidays. So many ofthem get lonesome, restless and even vio-lent, but the authorities at the prison havetold me that this is the first year in whichthey have not had problems with theirbehavior. The reason for this change isthat we have boys that areChristians in almost every section of theprison and they have a good testimonyamong the others. They and their mes-sage of Jesus are the salt that works againstthe corruption of sin. Thanks be to God,who always leads us in His triumph inChrist, and manifests through us thesweet aroma of the knowledge of Him inevery place!

Please pray for our young boys in

the prison. Many of those who were pre-viously converted have finished their termin the prison and are back out on thestreets. We are trying to help them enteronce again into society as Christians, butit is difficult to find them a place to liveand a job where they can make a living. There are a few rehab centers inAsuncion, but most of them do not havea program that would benefit a new Chris-tian seeking to live according to the Wordof God.

Our ministry at the adult mens jail isgoing well We have about 30 men in ourBible studies and many of the men areinvolved in self study Bible courses. Ourgreatest battle with the men is doctrinalconfusion. There are so many winds ofdoctrine blowing through Paraguay thatit is difficult to keep new believers on theright path and away for the wolves thatseek to devour them. Pray that we havewisdom in teaching Gods Word and thatthe men see that the Word is the only

bases for doctrine, faith and practice. Before I conclude this letter, I would

like to share with you about an interest-ing ministry that has resulted in the salva-tion of several young men. Last year, theowner of an ice-cream factory invited meto come to his business and share Christwith his 30 employees. I am joyful to in-form you that 23 men have professedChrist as Savior and are studying theScripture with me three times a week.

To conclude, I ask for your constantprayers that God may raise up workersfor the prison ministry and that the localchurches may get involved in this minis-try. Also, pray for my documentation.Until now, the consulate in Asuncion hasnot renewed my passport. Finally, pleasepray for my family in Bolivia. They donot return my letters and I believe I havelost contact with them completely. I thankGod for you and keep you in my prayers.

15I GIVE YOU JESUS

The Scripture commands the ministers of the Gospel to be ready to preach in season and out of season. Missionary DinoOrtiz fulfills the command, being ready to preach the Gospel anywhere and at any time. Here he is preaching to the employeesin an ice-cream factory in Asuncion. Of the 30 employees, 23 have now professed faith in Christ.

The Famous Christ over Rio De Janiero

harles Silviera is a HeartCrymissionary working in the coun-try of Brazil. The following be-gins with the story of his salva-

tion and calling into the ministry, and con-cludes with a few brief excerpts from hismonthly reports.

I was born in 1967 in a small villagein the state of Santa Catarina in Braziland was baptized a Catholic. My fatherwas a policeman and worked in our city.He drank a lot and he and my motherseemed to be fighting constantly. I wentto bed almost every night to the sound oftheir arguments. Every day the situationbecame worst and our house became

filled with sadness. Materially, we hadwhat we needed, but in every other partof our home there was only emptiness.Oftentimes, I would look at other fami-lies that were much poorer than mine, and would see their harmony and happi-ness. I wanted so much for my family tobe healed. Many times I would take offon my motorcycle and look at the beautyof nature around me and feel the pres-ence of God. I felt that there was a Cre-ator, but I did not know Him because noone had ever taught me in the Bible. Ourcountry is very Catholic, but the Bible isnot given much importance.

When I was 14, I fell in love with avery nice girl. Her home was full of peace

and her family was very united. That en-vironment of love captivated me and Iwould stay as much time as possible withher and her parents. Two years later, sheand I made a terrible mistake and she be-came pregnant. We were so afraid of thegreat responsibility that was before us thatwe decided to abort the baby, but God inHis infinite mercy did not allow for thisto happen. Our daughter is now 15 yearsold and one of the greatest blessing in ourlives.

After our marriage, my wife and Imoved into a house that was given to usby our families and I began to study. As ayoung man, the temptations of the worldpulled on me and many times I wanted tobe single and free. I did not want to betied down, but at the same time, I did notwant to lose my wife and daughter. It wassuch a terrible trial that I began to cry outto the God that I somehow knew existed.I asked Him to help me because I couldnot stand the situation any longer. It wasat that time, that God brought pastorMoses Damazio into my life and he sharedwith me about Christ and the Gospel. Ihad never heard anyone speak aboutJesus with such conviction and passion, and so I accepted his offer to start a Biblestudy together. It was not long after thatI was converted and began to follow Jesusas His disciple.

After my conversion, I attended aBible Institute in Floranopolis. Upongraduating, I began working as a mission-ary and church planter in association withpastor Damazio and the HeartCry Mis-sionary Society. As you may know, Brazilis going through a terrible economic cri-sis. If it were not for your giving throughHeartCry I do not know how I would beworking full time in the Lords harvest.Thank you for your kindness to me andto my people. Because of you there isnow a growing mission in the city of SantaCatarina.

The following are some excerpts from brotherCarlos Silvieras reports:

I have been witnessing to a man namedArlei and now he is coming to our mission. His family are members, but he is very hardto the Gospel. I can see God working in hislife.

Mr. Arlei is now a Christian! He istaking part in our Biblical studies and is at-tending Church with his entire family. Heused to be a drug addict, but now he praisesGod!

A young man was saved a few weeks agoand now his entire family is coming to theservices. We now have between 25 and 30children coming to our Sunday School.

God continues to rescue souls and blessour work. This month, a young man namedAlexandre was converted. He is the onlyChristian in his family, and must face perse-cution, but he remains faithful to God. Luizais a middle-aged wife and mother who hasprofessed Christ this month after coming toour church services many times. We askprayers for her husband who is a devotedcatholic and does not care to listen to theWord of God. Please remember Tereza andMaria in your prayers. They both desire tofollow Christ, but are afraid to make a deci-sion because of what their Catholic familieswill say about them.

Souls are being saved. Our church isgrowing little by little and we praise the Lordfor this. Thank you for the support we receiveevery month. We are working very hard andwe covet your prayers for this ministry. Welove you in the Lord and will never forgetwhat you have done for us in your desire tosee Brazilian souls reached for Christ.

It is with great pleasure that I wouldlike to tell you about Ari de Oliveira, a manthat we won for Christ last month. He wasan alcoholic and dying of cancer, but still hewould reject Gods word even during his ter-rible tribulation. One day I visited his houseto share the Gospel of Salvation with him onemore time. I thank God that he was con-verted that day. He now praises God!

My wife and I are continuing to havefamily Bible studies in the homes of the lostpeople in our village. With your help wehave been reaching souls for the Lord and theLord has been allowing us to grow little bylittle .

Please remember in your prayers a mannamed Carlos. We are trying to reach himwith the Gospel. He is a Catholic and is alsoinvolved with drugs. His wife came to ourchurch looking for spiritual help because hermarriage is destroyed. By Gods grace and

after much praying God has reconciled them. Also pray for the parents of one of our teenag-ers. They have many problems and the littlegirl is afraid for her parents souls. Her ownmother is a drug dealer. We are visiting her,but she still does not listen.

We began a Bible study with the hus-band of one of our members and this createda great interest in him for Gods Word. Afew weeks later he professed Christ as hisSavior. This man was involved with drugsand would have nothing to do with his fam-ily, but now God has literally transformed hislife!

We witnessed a great moving of thepower of God. A lady named Janice had avery serious motorcycle accident and spent15 days in intensive care. According to thedoctors she had little to no chance of living, but after much prayer, God raised her up.She is back home and will soon give her testi-mony in church.

It is with great joy that I inform youthat two teenage drug addicts named An-gela and Claudio have given their lives toChrist. They visited our church several timeswith no response, but the Word of God has

penetrated their heart. Please rememberthem in prayer as they grow spiritually.

We have been evangelizing the Canutofamily and they are attending our servicesregularly. They have not made a professionof faith, but they are very open to the Word.We desire their salvation and pray for themconstantly. The work continues growing. OurLady's Fellowship, Bible studies, youth group, visitation and other activities in the churchcontinue to move forward for the glory of God.

We thank our God for Tereza who gaveher life to Christ last month and is now serv-ing God. Please pray for her as she growsspiritually.

Our visitation program is still openingdoors for us to evangelize. We met Marly, the mother of one of the teenagers in ourchurch, while visiting door to door. Some ofthe members of our church have begun a Biblestudy with her. We ask that you rememberher in prayer because she has been greatlyinvolved with spiritism.

We are joyful to inform you that manypeople have been converted to Christ afterlearning things through the Word of God thatthey had never heard before.

EMANOIL DRAGICIBARDAS

Emanoil works along side of brother StefanGae, founder and director of the RomaniaSunday School Institute. He is a celebratedartist, who left the fame of the world behindhim to serve Christ as a minister of the Gos-pel. He is supported by the HeartCry Mis-sionary Society.

My name is Emaniol Dragici Bardasand my wifes name is Sanda. We havebeen married for 14 years and yet do nothave children. I come from a very reli-gious Orthodox family that takes pridein the fact that many priest have comefrom our family. Ever since I was a littleboy my family taught me the Bible, butfour years ago I realized something in mylife was missing. To know the Bible is onething, but to have a relationship with Godis something very different.

As a young man, my family andfriends advised me to become an artist. As a teenager in high school, my art wasexhibited in public expositions and by thetime I had finished art school I had shownmy work in 25 expositions in Romaniaand in other countries of Europe.

In 1991 I was invited to show my

work in Germany and things went verywell for me. Nevertheless, I missed mycountry and it was very difficult for me tolive in Germany. I had to learn a newlanguage, adapt to new customs and I wasaway from my wife. Because of my lone-liness, I would listen to sermons on theradio every Sunday. Gradually the Wordof God began to enter into my heart. While God was working in my life in Ger-many, my wife began to seek the Lord inRomania.

After being apart for two and a halfyears, I came back to Romania and mywife. We shared what the Lord had donein both of our lives and decided to startattending a Baptist Church. Within ashort time we were converted and bap-tized in obedience to the command ofChrist. Our life is so much better nowthan it was before. What God has donefor us is always fresh in our memory. Wewill never be able to thank Him enoughfor all He has done.

In 1996, I met brother Stefan Gaeand he asked me to join the Sunday

School ministry in Romania as an illus-trator for the training material they werepreparing. I saw this as an open door touse the artistic skills that God had givenme and it made me very happy. At thismoment I am also studying at the BibleInstitute so that I may be a better ministerof Christ. I praise God for this opportu-nity to better prepare myself to serve Him.Thank you for all that you have done andare doing for me and my family. Youhave made it possible for us to fulfill Godspurpose for our lives.

PAVEL HADCZY POPI was born in a Christian family and myparents were very godly. I decided to fol-low Christ at the age of thirteen and wasbaptized two years later. In time, I real-ized that I had to serve God and becomeone of His ministers, but I did not knowhow or when. I tried my best to be faith-ful in the small things. I ministered in mychurch and studied my Bible through dif-ferent correspondence courses. In 1989,I began my seminary studies and gradu-ated 1994 with a degree in theology.

On graduation, my pastor asked meto return to my home town and help himin the ministry, but I felt that the Lordwanted me to preach the Gospel in a placewhere it was not known. I felt the Lordwanted to send me to a very dark and dryplace, where the people did not knowabout salvation. As I sought Gods will,my brother Daniel Cocos came to me likethe man from Macedonia and asked meto come to Buzau. I visited the area threetimes and saw that it was very dark andneedy.

Shortly after, I moved my family tothe town of Ramecuserat in Buzau. Ithas a population of 40,000 people andat that time, not one evangelical church.I started a mission there and this is whereI work. I also go to the villages aroundRamecuserat and visit the Christians whohave no church and evangelize the lost. Ihave tried to establish missions in these

areas, but the priest is against me. Pleasepray that I will be faithful.

I want to thank HeartCry and all theChristians who are helping me to carryout my ministry full time. Without yourhelp, I would still minister and evangelizethe lost, but I would not be as successfulas I am now with your support. I cannottell you how much you mean to me.Again, pray that I will be faithful to theLords calling until that day that I standbefore Him face to face. Thank you andGod bless you. You are in my heart andmy prayers.

DANIEL COCOSEver since I was a child my parents tookme to Church and taught me how to prayand read my Bible. In 1981, I gave my lifeto Jesus Christ. Prior to that time, Istruggled with whether or not the Biblewas Gods Word and whether or not theBaptist Church was really teaching thetruth. I began to study the Bible to findits mistakes and to show the people thatthe Bible was wrong so that they wouldno longer read it. But as I studied theBible I became very impressed with themessage. I began to realize that the Biblewas something supernatural.

Having come to believe that the Biblewas the Word of God, I had to face mysecond problem - were the Baptists teach-ing the truth? I went to every Church andwatched their worship and preaching. Fi-nally, I decided that the Baptist Churchwas what I needed. Through studying theWord of God in the Baptist Church Iunderstood that the most important thingwas salvation by grace and through faithin Jesus. When I was eighteen I was bap-tized.

After my conversion, I went to visitmy grandparents in Buzau County anddiscovered that the people did not have aBible to read. They were told to pay moneyto the priest and do other good works togo to heaven. Because of this, I was veryburdened for the people of Buzau andasked God to allow me to start a churchfor them. In 1990, I came here as a mis-sionary and found four believers whowere gathering together to worship theLord. Since they were Baptist they werenot accepted by the others. Now I haveseveral missionary points in the villagesaround Buzau. The farthest is 45K away.On Sunday mornings we use an old vanto bring the people who live in villageswith no church to our church in Buzau.

In Buzau, the Orthodox Church isvery strong. They have a seminary andone of their most important cathedrals. They fight against me constantly. Recently, the Orthodox priest warned the peopleof Buzau that all the members of mychurch had AIDS and were very danger-ous. Because of this the people are veryconfused about us and the Gospel. Pleasepray for me and my family. I have twoboys - David who is six years old andGabriel who is two. My wifes name isAngelica. Also pray for the people ofBuzau. Many people here say that Goddoes not love them because they have nomoney or food. I wish sometimes that Icould help them all and show them thatGod is love and that He loves them verymuch.

20 HEARTCRY MISSIONARY SOCIETY, MARCH-APRIL 1999

MATEI MURESANRomaniaVillages: Aiud, Girbova de Sus, Hopirta

In the last few months we have givenout 210 Bibles to those who are seekingthe Lord. We have had 16 new convertsand eight of them have already been bap-tized. One of the young men we baptizedwas born blind. For a very long time hetried to find peace in the OrthodoxChurch, but finally gave up. He came toour Church and met Jesus. He continueswith us and has become very active. Hesings, recites poetry and spends much timein prayer.

JULIAN FILIPRomania / GypsyVillages: Timboesti, Petroasa

In the last few months we have givenout 80 Bibles and many gospel tracts tothose who are still unconverted. We have15 new converts, all of which have nowbeen baptized. Please pray for us. Wehad been meeting in a persons house, butthe Orthodox priest threatened the ownerand he is very afraid. We now have noplace to meet and must have our servicesoutside in the fields. I noticed that sincewe began preaching the Gospel in thisvillage the people are not as bad as theywere at the beginning. They try to be morerespectful and do not curse us anymore.I can feel how God is walking with me,giving me strength, power, and wisdomwhen I speak. The people welcome mewarmly and respectfully. They are begin-ning to see a great difference between theOrthodox priest and my ministry. I thinkthis is a great victory for us.

SLAVIC SPATARURepublic of MoldovaVillages: Nisporeni, Ciuciuleni, Vulcanesti

In the last few months we have givenout 19 Bibles to seekers and 21 new con-verts are being prepared for baptism. Ihave organized Bible Study groups in an-

other 2 villages. I would like to go andevangelize many villages around Nisporeni, but the priests are against me. God is theOne who opens many doors for us. Weare now focusing on evangelizing the pro-fessors from Nisporeni high school. LatelyGod has been teaching me many things. Ihave come to understand that one is nota great man by having many servants, butby being the servant of many people.

VASILE VINTURepublic of MoldovaVillages: Corlateni, Singureni

God is teaching me that I must goand witness to the people who are out-side of the Church. Jesus did not com-mand the lost to come, but He com-manded us to go. Last Sunday we heldour church services on the steps of CityHall. Many people came and asked ques-tions. It surprised us that we were wel-comed and the people seemed to enjoyour presence.

Recently I visited the village of mybirth and met one of the leaders of themob who runs many of the towns aroundmy village. I talked with him about helland the wrath of God. I told him to re-pent and believe in Christ because He isthe only one who can set him free fromhis wicked nature and the devils that con-trolled his life. He felt very sorry for hissins and confessed Christ as Lord andSavior. When he left he declared, I nowreturn to my home with God in my life.

JENO HADNAGYTransylvaniaHungarian Outreach

The Hungarian people are overjoyedthat they can attend a worship service intheir own language. It seems that we arenot far from starting a HungarianChurch in the middle of Romania. Wehave 14 people who are coming regularly. Please pray for our people. The Catholic

priest has threatened not to allow theirchildren to attend school if they continuein our Bible study. We are not afraidbecause God has taught us that He willnever let us walk through our problemsalone. He always drives away our fearsand comforts us with the hope that wewill spend eternity together.

SAMUEL STOICARomania / GypsyColentina

Here in the Colentina district thepeople are very poor, depressed, and vio-lent. The main profession is stealing. Allthe people live in desperation and arehardened by their disillusionment with life. Most do not want to hear about God orthe Gospel. In spite of this I have seen afew lives changed by the power of God.Those who are converted even praise Godfor their poverty.

I believe that the key to this ministryis spending time with the people and per-severing. In time God will show mercyand will change their lives. I know thatthis is a very difficult ministry but I amdevoted to go and spread the Good Newsto the gypsies. This month I have beenshowing the Jesus film, preaching and giv-ing out Bibles and tracts. Many womenwho deal in witchcraft have been listeningto the preaching, but they are afraid toleave their witchcraft because it is how theymake their living.

In this ministry I noticed that I haveto pray and fast more than anything elsebecause my people are far away from Godand from His laws. A few days ago threewomen came to me confessing that theyhad just stolen food from another mansgarden. After I shared the Gospel withthem they told me that they understoodand felt as though Jesus had forgiven themand made them free.

VIRGIL MARINRomania / GypsyVoetin

My vision is to have as many churchesas possible. I am now going to an isolatedvillage called Voetin. I am going fromdoor to door and preaching the Gospel.God has bless by giving us 5 villagers whohave already accepted Jesus. The work isnot easy and I have had many troubles. The police and the priest came to driveme away, but I am confident that Godwill allow me to continue in the ministry.

I have noticed that the people whoare poor seem to have an open heart forthe Word. I know that I am called tospread the Word among them, but some-times I wish that I could also give them afish and a loaf of bread.

ION MARINRomania / GypsyCornetu

Cornetu is a very large district andthe majority are gypsies. The educationand morals are very low and the peopleare very poor. There is no school for chil-dren and they are always in the streets. Inthe last few months we have had fourconverts and the work is growing slowly. We must plant churches in this area nomatter how difficult or how much it costsus. The people must hear the Word

When we began the mission in thisdistrict, a very evil woman came and triedto drive us away. Not long after, she be-came very sick. When we returned to thevillage a few weeks later, another group ofpeople tried to drive us away, but this samewoman stood against them and told themto leave us alone because we were goodpeople. Then she came and ask us to for-give her. It is amazing the way God isworking. The people are astonished whenthey seeGodchangingpeoples lives. Therewas one alcoholic who was always beatinghis family. After hearing the Gospel hewas converted. Today he is serving God.

As always, the priest in the village isstrongly against us. He makes the peopleafraid to come and listen to the GoodNews, but there are some honest peoplewith an open heart for Jesus. I am posi-tive that God is going to do a great workh e r e .

Your radio program has opened myeyes to true faith in an incredible God.My family brought me up in a religiousatmosphere, but they did not have a per-sonal relationship with Jesus Christ. Myfamily was destroyed because of alcohol.I lived a lonely and discouraged life. Ihave a career in medicine, but I still feltempty and without hope. After hearingyour radio transmission I understoodthat God wishes for man to have a per-sonal relationship with Him. My eyes werefilled with tears when I heard the messagethat I could put my trust in God and findforgiveness for my sins. I rebelledagainst God and sinned with all my heartbecause I did not want to submit to Godswill for my life. One day the Word ofGod that was preached on your programfrightened me because I was in such sin. Ithen realized the state I was in and de-cided I needed to repent. This was noteasy and I delayed for a time but Godsaved me from myself. Now I am happyand my life is good. I thank God and youHis servant.

My wife left me andmy children to go to the USA and thisleft me very discouraged and hopeless.Your messages on the radio have been ofgreat encouragement to me, but thebroadcasts seems too short! Before my conversion, I worked as anabortionist in a government clinic. I havekilled babies withmy own hands. I havehelped the doctors kill babies and this isa shameful thing. I was a terrible per-son, but by the grace of God I began torealize that the thing I was doing waswrong. When I became aChristian I triedto find a way out of the clinic. I wouldpray to Godwith great sorrow, because Iwould look at my hands and realize thattheywere dirtywith the blood of the chil-dren I had killed. I had become Godschild, but I had also killed Gods chil-dren. I knew that it was one of the great-est sins in the world. I asked God to for-giveme somany times, but I realized thatI had to stop doing this terrible crime be-fore Hewould forgiveme. I finally wentto the people whowere over me and toldthem that there was no way that I wouldever work again in a place that killed andslaughtered babies. I was so poor thatlosingmy job couldmean going hungry, but I did not care anymore. I could notkill again regardless of what happenedto me. To my surprise my superiors didnot fire me, but transferred me to an or-phanage to help little children who hadno parents. I was overwhelmed with joybecause I saw that God had given me anew life and a new chance. Even thoughI had killed Gods little children, He for-gave me and placed more of His littlechildren intomy hands.

LookingBack

This picture was taken in 1990 in the city of Lima Peru. It was a time of civil unrest and poverty. The Peruvian Governments waragainst the communist rebel group Sendero Luminoso (translated Shinning Path) had devastated the country. The economy wasravished, abject poverty was common place and 23,000 people died as casualties of war. As it has been throughout history, whenevereconomic of social tragedy strikes, it is the children who suffered the most. The cruel and dangerous streets of Lima became home tothousands of children.

One night as missionary Paul Washer was preaching in one of the many city parks in Lima, he noticed movement under a large bush. After investigating he discovered that there were three small children and an infant huddled together and sleeping. That night HeartCrybegan feeding and ministering to the children in the park. Eventually, the group of children grew to fifty and then to nearly one hundred. At nights, brother Paul and the young members of a new church he was planting would load up 55 gallon barrels full of Quaker Oats intoan old borrowed ambulance and take the food to the children in the park. After a warm meal they would play games and share theGospel with the ones who wanted to hear. In time, many of the larger Churches and ministries in Peru began to take notice of the littleband of Christians and were moved by Gods Spirit to take over the ministry.

It was a formative time for brother Paul and all the Christians involved. They learned that the world can be, and often is, a very darkand frightening place. But they also learned, that there is no place so dark that the light of the Gospel of Jesus Christ cannot transformit when Christians reach out in love.
