Chapter President’s Update Greetings to all you lovers of learning, from Phi Kappa Phi Chapter 282 President Professor Janice L. Herring
The executive committee, including student leaders of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, has been meeting all semester and participating in campus events, including our own signature fall event, the Spooktacular Boooook Drive. We have more exciting things to come in the spring semester and invite you to participate fully.
At our November 17 general membership meeting, we voted on and passed revisions to our by-‐laws, aligning chapter rules with national guidelines for membership eligibility, and refining officer duties. Enrollment services, after posting Fall 2015 grades, will identify students eligible for initiation and alert their respective academic departments for endorsement. We will also issue a call for nominations of faculty, staff, and administrators to The Society.
On March 23, we will hold our Heralding event in MSR, a ceremonial reading of prospective initiates’ names, followed by a Question and Answer Session. Initiation Ceremony, May 6, 2016 -‐ Main Dining
Phi Kappa Phi Week activities are May 2-‐13. Do you have an idea for a great Phi Kappa Phi Week event? Contact me at [email protected] for information about stipends to host what we anticipate to be a wide variety of events. RFP to be sent out soon.

Alumni Focus Alumni News, from Professor Arnold Anthony Schmidt, Coordinator for Alumni Affairs
Two chapter goals that I’ll be working on this year are: “Nominate and honor an alumnus for membership/enhance outreach to alumni members.”
I’ll need your help! Our chapter of Phi Kappa Phi wants to establish an annual “Alumni of the Year” award to honor `one of our own’ for outstanding activities. The person might have achieved some great professional status, supported a worthy charity, or otherwise done something notable in our community, state, or beyond. Please nominate anyone you believe worthy of this award by sending me an email at [email protected] together with a brief description of the person’s accomplishments. And don’t be shy! If you, a friend, or a loved one have accomplished something special, self-‐nomination is perfectly fine. Our committee will select one of these nominees and present an award at the May Initiation Ceremony. Next, we’d like to ensure that this newsletter
reaches all our members, current and inactive, here in Stanislaus County and around the world. Regardless of where we live, all of us like hearing news from our college community, and I know folks will enjoy keeping up with the activities of Phi Kappa Phi, joining us when possible, and thinking about us when it’s not. Please circulate this newsletter among any members who may not have received it, and send me current contact information for any members whose addresses or emails have changed. We’ll add them to our list, so they can keep current with the chapter’s goings-‐on.
And finally, on a more personal note, what’s happening in your life? Run a 5K or marathon? New job or promotion? Recently married? New family member? Travel somewhere wonderful? Win an award? If you let us know, we’ll spread the word to the PKP community in the “Member News” column of an upcoming newsletter.

Student Vice Pres ident Voice For the eighth year in a row, Phi Kappa Phi
participated in the Halloween Gala at the Residential Housing Village on Saturday evening, October 31st. Our chapter held the Spooktacular Booook Drive for the entire month of October, with collection boxes around the CSU Stanislaus campus. Every year has been more successful than the last, with the number of books increasing annually as members continue to spread the word and help collect gifts for children.
Once collected, we organize the books into school grade groups from preschool through teens. This year about 400 books were given away. The kids’ reactions were priceless, with the majority being happy to pick out a free book of their choice! Hopefully, next year we will collect even more books!
It’s a rewarding feeling to know you’ve nurtured the love of learning for all of these future scientists, teachers, and astronauts just by providing some new reading material. If you have yet to participate in this event, I highly recommend doing it at least once. Be on the lookout for our announcement of next year’s Spooktacular Booook Drive or email me at [email protected] if you’d like to donate books that we can share with these charming, curious, wonderfully costumed children.
