Volume XXXVI No. 1 July 2015
“When a great man dies, for years the light he leaves behind him, lies on the paths of men.” – Henry Wadsworth Longfellow
CHAPLAIN’S REPORT Father David McGuigan
Dear Brother Knights, Early in the morning on Sunday, June 28, a
genuine Catholic gentleman, in the best and deepest tradition of the Knights of Columbus, David Edwin Johnston, 53, collapsed in his home and died, soon after. He had celebrated 25 years of marriage to his beloved, Terri, just the day before with a renewal of their vows and a joyful celebration. I know that our hearts reach out in prayer to Terri, and their wonderful children, Sarah and Andrew, and that Sheen Council, #7612, will be there to support them however we may.
In more than just the obvious way, given David’s stature, he was a man to “look up to.” He was a kind, faith-filled and motivated Christian person, family man, professional colleague, and friend. As a Knight of Columbus, he walked the talk of our Order as a genuine and shining example to all of us of what we are called to be and to be about.
In the first reading of the Mass that Sunday, from the Book of Wisdom, as David’s family and others were just beginning to grapple with this tragic loss, the Church proclaimed, “God formed man to be imperishable; the image of his own nature he made him.” Let this be our hope and prayer, in the midst of our shock and grief, in loving memory of David, our brother. David’s life reflected the divine nature, in his loving
kindness, generosity, commitment, faith, and sacrificial service—offered even as he met challenges to his health.
In the Gospel that same Sunday, everyone thought Jesus was too late to do anything for the daughter of the synagogue official, Jairus. But, Jesus spoke the word of new life to her, “Arise!” This call to new life in the midst of death is for David, too. It is for all of us who believe in Jesus Christ and walk by faith in him.
David was, as we say in terms of the chronology of his service, a “past Grand Knight,” a PGK. I say, as I’m sure we all feel, that he IS and will ALWAYS BE a Grand Knight, a man to look up to. May he live, forever, in joy in the everlasting kingdom prepared for us from the foundation of the world.

GRAND KNIGHT’S REPORT Greg Lofton
Thank you again for the honor to serve you as your Grand Knight for the coming fraternal year. I will always seek to serve all of our Knights.
Personally, I seek each day to live the principals of our Order; Charity, Unity, Fraternity, and Patriotism. I also seek to learn more about these principals. As a reminder, Charity is more than fundraising for a good cause; it is also how we treat each other. Our Catholic faith teaches us to love thy neighbor as ourselves. We show that love for each other and those throughout our community through the manner in which we treat each other, how we talk to each other, and how we speak of each other when we are not present. Charity takes another hit each time we disrespect our neighbors, friends and brother Knights. I, for my part, seek to boost Charity in all actions and engagements. That much I can control.
Our Unity keeps us strong, and please know that together we can always accomplish far more than any of us can do as individuals. Through Unity we support one another. We don’t have to always agree with each other or
we must align to one opinion, but it does mean that we should always count on the support and encouragement of our brother Knights in our Council and across the Order. Together, in our Unity, we can improve the life of our Parish and Catholic Community.
Our Order was founded to provide assistance to the widows and children left behind when a husband and father passed. During this time in our Council’s life, we are suffering from the sudden and tragic loss of brother Sir Knight, Past Grand Knight of our Council, and current District Warden, David Johnston. His loss will be felt deeply and will carry over a long period of time. As a Council, we will emerge stronger for our honor in working with David over the years and our pleasure with knowing him and his family. We support each other as we grieve for our friend and brother.
We support his family in many different ways, today and in the many days to come. We do all of this through our commitment to our Fraternity as Knights of Columbus.
As patriots and Knights, we are proud of our devotion to God and country, and strongly believe in standing up for both. You will see in our workings through the viewings and funeral for our brother David Johnston that we as Knights, will stand for our veterans, and support them in whatever means is needed. Sometimes, just being there is the greatest gift we can provide for our passed brothers and their families.
I look forward to the work and the joys we will experience in the coming fraternal year. We may start out a bit rocky will all of the changes the Council is facing, but I’m confident that we will see June 2016 stronger than we are today; stronger in our Charity, Unity, Fraternity and Patriotism, but as individuals and as a Council serving our Catholic Community near and far.
We are ONE in our faith. We are ONE in our service. We are ONE as an Order.
Go in peace, Greg Lofton

DISTRICT DEPUTY’S REPORT John Trainor, District Deputy
It’s hard to believe we are already at the start of a new Fraternal Year! It was certainly an exciting year that we have just completed. I want to thank all of our outgoing Grand Knights for all of their hard work and many successes that they had during the past year. I am sure you will all be around to help your successors reach their goals in this coming year.
I am impressed with the newly elected Grand Knights as they have already begun to prepare for their year as Grand Knight. They will be busy attending the Grand Knight Leadership Seminar over the weekend of July 10 -12 in Frederick where they will pick up much worthwhile information to bring back to the councils.
I hope you will be supportive of your new officers and offer the any assistance they may need. If you have any ideas of new programs you would like to see or ways to make existing ones better, please give them to your Grand Knight or Program Director.
Now they we are entering vacation season, why not take your Knights of Columbus Membership Card with you. That card can get you into any Knights of Columbus Council in the world. No matter where you go there will probably be a Council nearby. Why not stop by and visit another council’s meeting. It is always fun meeting new people and believe me, they will usually treat you like a king. Who knows you may be able to bring back new and different ideas to your own council.
Finally, when going on vacation don’t forget to take your rosary with you. Our Lady will help watch over you and keep you and your families safe in your travels.
COUNCIL BENEFITS ADVISOR Mike Hurley
The term life insurance that we might have through our work is a good thing, but it isn’t enough. It usually represents one or two times our yearly salary. Every member of Knights of Columbus who is working to provide for their family can apply for additional life insurance through the KofC Fraternal Benefits Program. So can their wives. A level term life insurance plan in the amount of $250,000 or $500,000 or $1 million is usually very affordable. In fact, a dad with dependent children really cannot afford to not have this protection in place. If we consider how much income we expect to produce in the next 20 years, that gives us a very basic idea about how much life insurance we should have in place.
We Catholics should be aware that our time here on earth is but a fleeting moment in the big picture. Our founder Venerable Fr. Michael J McGivney established the Knights of Columbus primarily to provide this insurance protection. Please consider me available to get you an honest proposal/quote and to help you put this essential protection in place. Send me an email: [email protected] or call my cell 410-913-7835 Vivat Jesu, Michael Hurley, FIC Council Benefits Advisor
LECTURER’S REPORT Raymond Hohl
We had a good turn out at the Grand Knight's Picnic. There were about 60 who attended. George and I put together about 10 carnival type games. The balloon darts, fish tank pennies and the nerf bow and arrows were the big hits. There was a cotton candy machine and popcorn.

There were many prizes won by the children who I believe had a great time. There was a 50/50 raffle. My lovely daughter Anna Hohl won $33.00. Thanks to Dave Love who grilled everyone hotdogs, hamburgers and chicken. And a big thank you to Carol Love for all the wonderful side dishes and fruit. I want to take a moment and thank George for all his support, help, and ideas over the past two years with the socials. George, I could not have done it without you. I love you, man!
COUNCIL NEWS
Election of Home Corp Directors: At the next Council Business Meeting, the
Home Corp will conduct its annual election of five (5) directors to a term of 3 years each. So far, Brothers Tony Gioio and PGK Dave Love have agreed to have their names placed in nomination for Home Corp Director. Any Brother Knight of Council 7612 in good standing with the Financial Secretary, is eligible to be nominated for and elected a Home Corp Director.
As you know, the Home Corp is transitioning. We are selling the Council Home. Once the sale is finalized, the Home Corp Board of Directors will initiate a review and update of our By-Laws to reflect the changes that will occur as a result of the sale of the Council Home. Primarily, the size of the Board of Directors will be proposed to be reduced in consideration of the fact that the only property that will be on hand are the smoker and trailer, which can not be titled in the name of the Council.
If you are interested in helping your Brother Knights in managing the Council's capital property and transitioning to a newer, smaller organization, please consider placing you name in nomination for the Board of Directors. If you are interested, contact the Acting President, Brother Harold Bernadzekowski, the Secretary, Brother George Moriatis, or the Treasurer, Brother Ray Miles.

FAMILY Jarvis Abellana
Family of the Month We held a Mother's Day appreciation by
giving each Mother and Grandmother a Marigold flower to symbolize their dedication for life and devotion. The Klezers delivered and assembled each marigold and was also available to hand out these flowers to our parishioners after masses. Besides our brother Eric, their children are active at church. Now her sister Emily is following her footsteps, as an Altar server and also a member of Junior Catholic Daughters. Eric Jr. will soon join the ranks of the Squires. Mary, and Olivia are at an age to follow their older sisters lead. Congratulations to the Klezer Family, for their dedication to faith and family. Sharing our Blessings

We were all saddened to hear about or follow Brother Dave.
Here is a Pro-Life article I wrote a couple of years ago. Thought it would be relevant:
Pro-Life Report from August - 2013 DEATH
I realize this is a pro-life report, but if you would indulge me, I would like to change the subject this month and talk about death, more specifically sudden death. At the end of June I received an e-mail from a college friend who I keep in touch with, and he informed me that a colleague of ours, died suddenly, while he was out for a hike. http://www.kjonline.com/news/Hiker-collapses-dies-along-NH-trail-.html http://www.legacy.com/obituaries/milforddailynews/obituary.aspx?n=bryce-k-griswold&pid=165535166&fhid=2726#fbLoggedOut
I was stunned, and very emotional about it. I was not close to Bryce, but he was one of those guys in our class that was always on the ball, always had his assignments in, and always received high marks. He was a man that was going places and a fellow student that you tried to aspire to be.
So why was I so upset about this? I have not talked to him or kept in touch with him at all since I graduated in 1985. I think the reason it hit me so hard, is I am sure he had the same worries as I have right now at this point in my life:
Will I have enough to retire? When will I be able to retire? How am I going to pay for my kid’s college? Where are they going to go to college? How am I going to find time to do that? I will be happy when…….. Won’t it be great when……… All these worries, all this planning, and
looking ahead into the future only to realize that there may not be a future, only today. And then I wondered, was Bryce right with God that day?
Then I thought to myself, am I right with God today?
Not too long ago, I would have said no, I am not right with God on any given day. But as some of you may or may not know, I have recently read the book “Rediscovering Catholicism” by Matthew Kelly. I think today, and every day from here on out, to make an effort to begin my day with GOD. Doing this has helped me focus on the day, focus on the present. Some of this is good and some bad. I have been a little loose with the money lately. I mean I could drop dead at any point what is the point of saving it. The good is I cherish the moments of the day: the laughter, the irony, the toil, the mundane, and the difficult. I am sure you have heard all the clichés: Live in the moment, Seize the day, Live for the now.
I would urge you to start the day off with Jesus. I start my day going to United States Conference of Catholic Bishops site and read the daily readings (http://usccb.org/bible/index.cfm). Click on the today’s reading. If you don’t feel like reading them hit the Audio button and someone will read them to you. If you are in the mood for a 2-3 minute homily hit the Video button to see the teaching about the day’s readings.
So what is my point? Start every day with
God, because this could be the day that you meet Him. Be Bold. Be Catholic. Al Grasley “Pro-Life Guy”

tasty food and carnival games of summer. Who knew that would be the last time we would see PGK Dave Johnston alive? If I could just echo what so many have shared. He was a big man with a big heart. So sad that heart is what failed him. Our thoughts and prayers are with Terri and his children. Let us always remember to say hello to friends and kiss loved ones goodbye because it may be our last chance. July has us working the M&T Stadium concession stand for the 7/18 soccer tournament,
the 7/25 Billy Joel concert. In August we have the One Direction concert on 8/8. Lastly, on 8/29, we need a full staff of ladies and spouses to run the Ravens pre-‐season game concession stand where all proceeds fund our upcoming projects. Get TEAM trained or renewed in July to help us out. See you at church, the carnivals, the stadium, grocery stores, or wherever. Enjoy your summer, avoid the storms and stay cool. Thank you and God Bless
