THE NCAA HAS adopted The Basketball Tournament’s post-game bracket celebration.

After games, the winning team goes over to a giant replica ofthe tournament’s bracket. A member of the team moves a cardwith the team’s name ahead to the next round of the meet.

David Worlock, the NCAA’s director of media coordination, said, “Yes, we’re doing it. I noticed in the tournament and like theidea. A few weeks ago, there was some chatter on Twitter fromsome of members of the media, saying they wished we would do itduring our tournament. So I wasn’t the only person who thought itwas a cool idea.”

Worlock said the enlarged version of the NCAA tournamentwould most likely be located outside the post-game pressconference area.

ON SUNDAY, I begin my 50th year as a member of the Javelinaathletic staff.

My first day in Kingsville was Aug. 20, 1968.It has been an unbelievable period. My tenure with the Javelinas has carried me to five different

countries, to most states in the U.S. including Hawaii, has allowedme to work with some of the greatest coaches and athletes in thehistory of college athletics, has afforded me the chance to coversome of the most successful teams in collegiate history, and hasgiven me the opportunity to become friends with thousands ofathletes, coaches and fans.

One particular acquaintance was Joan Howe, who became mywife in 1969.

The javelina has become my favorite animal. Blue and gold aremy favorite colors. Jalisco is my favorite song.

I don’t think there has ever been another athletic publicist whohas been blessed with more than I’ve received in Kingsville.

KEVIN HAYNES, 6-1, 228-pound linebacker at CentralWashington, was picked as one of the top five NCAA Division IIdefensive players who have a chance at claiming the 2017 HarlonHill Trophy. (Continued on Page 3)

The trophy goes to the DII player of the year and has gone to adefensive player only once.

Haynes, from Battle Ground, Wash., has been a first-team All-Great Northwest Athletic Conference player for three consecutiveyears and had 110 tackles for last season. Nineteen were for lossesand he had four sacks.

The Javelina offense will see Haynes in the Sept. 2 seasonopener when the Wildcats come to Javelina Stadium.

SPEAKING OF CENTRAL Washington, the Wildcat footballteam had to move its practices last weekend to Eastside CatholicHigh School in Sammamish, Wash., due to the unhealthy air qualityin Ellensburg, where CWU is located.

The poor air quality was caused by wildfires in BritishColumbia and in the Ellensburg area.

Sammamish is 100 miles northwest of Ellensburg and a suburbof Seattle.

CENTRAL WASHINGTON WILL hold its second annual fanday Saturday in Ellensburg.

Wildcat athletes and coaches from football, volleyball, women’ssoccer, cross country and women’s rugby will meet and interactwith fans. There will be a number of activities including tailgatinggames, poster giveaways, athlete autographs and photoopportunities.

THE JAVELINAS’ FIRST two games will be against teamsfrom the Northwest.

After hosting Central Washington on Sept. 2, the Javelinas willbe in Burnaby, British Columbia, for the Sept. 9 contest.

The three teams have somewhat different weather conditions asthey prepare for their upcoming seasons.

The temperature in Kingsville last week was 100 degrees.Ellensburg had a high of 79 Sunday but did have a temperature of102 one day last week. Burnaby had a high of 69 Sunday.

ZACH PROSBA HAD a recent article on Herosports.com thatESPN College GameDay has become popular with college fans as ittravels to sites each week.

These trips are usually to NCAA Division I sites and never hasit been to a Division II game.

Prosba wrote that “we’d love to change that”.He created a theoretical Division II Football College GameDay

schedule for the upcoming season and one of the sites he suggestedthe crew visit is Kingsville for the Sept. 23 matchup between theJavelinas and Texas A&M-Commerce.

“Capitalizing big-time on the historical factor, Kingsville serveas a fantastic host for a D2 football GameDay with NFLconnections,” Prosba wrote. “Over their program’s history, Hall ofFamers such as Gene Upshaw and John Randle once donned theblue and yellow of Kingsville football.

Pre-Workout CheckCamille Barton of the Orthopaedic Center of Corpus Christi checks one of the Javelina football playersprior to the start of practice last week.

“Nowadays, TAMU-K is still a national powerhouse with big-time talent along the defensive line in Brandon Jones (who one dayshould be a pro player as well). With the combination of historicalexcellence with current success, the Javelinas would be anabsolutely perfect host for a Lone Star Conference showdown inTexas”.

Another game he proposed would be Texas A&M-Commerce’sopener with North Alabama in Florence, Ala.

Simon Fraser is also recommended as a site when the Clanhosts Western Oregon Oct. 7. There is no other Canadian footballteam in NCAA and this would be unique.

And for the season finale, he suggests the rivalry betweenHenderson (Ark.) State and Ouachita Baptist (Ark.). TheArkadelphia, Ark., schools are across the street from each other andyou can hear the public address system at one of the stadiums whileat the other’s.

Not likely to happen but there is a world of outstanding footballgames and rivalries in college matchups other than in Division I.

LONE STAR CONFERENCE notes:…The Angelo State training staff was recognized by its peers

as the Lone Star Conference Athletic Training Staff of the Year. The award was announced last week.…The LSC ranked fourth in men’s and women’s basketball

attendance among NCAA Division II schools last winter. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletic Association led the

men’s attendance, the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference wassecond and the Central Intercollegiate Athletics Association wasthird.

The women’s conference attendance standings were the sameas the men’s.

In the men’s division, Tarleton State was 14th with an averageof 1,527 a game and Midwestern State was 19th with 1,374 a game.

The women’s division posted the top 10 schools in attendanceand the LSC didn’t have a school in the listing.

…Texas A&M-Commerce will hold its Lion Football Fan DaySaturday at Memorial Stadium.

The NCAA Division IIPresidents Council met last weekto consider proposed legislationfor the 2018 NCAA Conventionand the division’s commitment toproviding athletes a balancedcollege experience commandedmuch of the attention of themeeting.

Two of the four proposals upfor consideration focused onplaying and practice seasonschedules. One would allowfootball teams to begin preseasonpractice three days earlier whilethe other would move up the startdate for women’s volleyball by

NCAA Division II Presidents Council Supports Proposalsone week in years in which theDivision II National ChampionsFestival occurs in the fall.

The council voted to sponsorthe football proposal, citing it as anecessary adjustment after theNCAA eliminated two-a-daypreseason practices last spring.

The council voted not tosponsor the volleyball proposalbut it will proceed to amembership vote at theconvention.

Some of the council membersraised concerns about alterationsto playing and practice schedulesthat could lead to more requests

for longer seasons and less timeoff for athletes.

One member contended thatthe volleyball proposal couldallow athletes to attend classesthey might normally miss duringFestival years by allowing teamsto move a couple of weekdaymatches to the weekend.

The most influential factor inthe council’s affirmative vote forfootball was the health and safetyimpact of allowing football playersmore time to acclimate and preparefor the season, taking intoaccount practices teams may havelost in the two-a-day ban and the

recommended day off per week. The earlier start date was

already made permissible for the2017 preseason through a blanketwaiver, and this legislation wouldcodify the change for future years.

Two other proposals receivedthe council’s support. One wouldeliminate some restrictions on thetypes and increase amounts ofathletics-related awards an athletecan receive and another wouldallow sports wagering violationsto be received on a case-by-casebasis.

Currently, violations that(Continued on Page 19)
