Transcript of Volume XVIII Issue 3 January 2015 Braden Castle Park Newsletter · Forrest Bone is a retired...
Forrest Bone is a retired teacher
and coach from Dearborn, Michi-
gan. Forrest and his wife, Jeri, re-
newed the Tin Can Tourists as an
all make and model vintage trailer
and motor coach club in 1998.
Twenty-one rigs attended the
May Renewal Gathering at Camp
Dearborn, Milford Michigan. By the
end of the year, fifty members
were accepted as charter mem-
bers. The group has grown steadily,
currently holding Annual Gatherings
in Michigan, Florida, and regional
rallies at various locations in the
US. Recently Regional Representa-
tives have been added to represent
England, Japan, France & Australia.
The new version of
Tin Can Tourists is open
to all. Its goal is to
abide by the original
group’s objectives and
guiding principles as well
as the promotion and preservation
of vintage trailers and motor
coaches through Gatherings and
information exchange.
With the help of Terry Bone,
son and webmaster, the Tin Can
Tourists Club has grown steadily.
Tin Can Tourists has over 18,000
followers on Facebook, and our
website www.tincantourists.com is
a great resource for all things re-
lated to vintage tailoring and Tin
Can Tourists.

January 2015 Volume XVIII Issue 3
A Quest by Rolf Ernst was included in our January ‘14
Newsletter. The quest was to find residents with in-
teresting backgrounds—who were willing to share in-
formation in our newsletter. This edition we have such
an article—the spotlight on Forrest & Jeri Bone.
If any reader with an interesting background
or accomplishment would like to share their 200-300
word item, please see Pat Grau or Rolf Ernst.

dents during the Christmas Bazaar &

to you, over $530
was raised! From
the proceeds, $28
was donated to “Adopt-A-Family”
which was from the sale
of handcrafted butterflies made &
donated by Sue Jones.

Silent Auction
& Luncheon will
be held Friday,
January 9th,
2015
Start the NEW YEAR with a
“cleaning project”! Now is
the time to get rid of those
useable items that
you no longer need or
want. You know….the
ones taking up pre-
cious space! Bring
your donated items to the Big Hall
on Thursday, January 8th be-
tween 9 a.m. and 2
p.m. All donated baked goods may
be brought to the Big Hall, Friday,
between 8:30 and 9:30
a.m. Volunteers are also needed
for merchandise setup on Thurs-
day starting at 9 a.m. Watch for a
colored flyer for more details & ex-
act times for the luncheon & auction.
The January selection is Unbroken: A
World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and
Redemption by Deirdre Donahue. A movie based
on it will be released on Christmas Day! The No-
vember AARP Bulletin said this sensational tale
of WWII vet Louis Zamperini teaches a lesson in
redemption.
We want to especially invite any gentle-
men interested in Book Club—to read Unbroken
and join us January 20th at 10 am in the LH.
Braden Castle’s Book Club had it’s 1st meeting
of the season on December 16th. The Friday Night
Knitting Club was discussed. All enjoyed this Women’s
fiction selection. The author, Kate Jacobs, focused on
an intergenerational group of women from different
ethnic and economic backgrounds. We came away with
a better understanding of the importance of loving
ourselves as individuals.

There were two compelling reasons given for in-
clusion. First, Braden Castle itself was declared
to be the home of the first non-native American
settlers in the Bradenton area. The Braden fam-
ily had the largest sugarcane plantation on the
south bank of the Manatee River. Remnants of
their 1850 home built of tabby were and still are
in evidence. Second, the craftsman-style bunga-
lows of Braden Castle Park, settled by the Camp-
Braden Castle Park is listed on
the National Register of His-
toric Places. How did our com-
munity earn this special recog-
nition?
It was in the early 1980s that
the winds of change came
across this section of land jut-
ting out into the Manatee
River. Local authorities were
focusing on it as a place to
build a new bridge across the
river. If that was to take
place, the southern pillars for
the new bridge would sit in
Braden Castle Park. Our com-
munity of small historic homes
and buildings would be no more.
Alarmed, several residents de-
cided that the best way to pre-
vent such an intrusion was to
petition the Florida legislature
to place Braden Castle Park on
the National Register of His-
toric Places. (Their application
can be found on the Internet
ing Tourists of America in
the 1920s, were represen-
tative of the early develop-
ment of a seasonal commu-
nity.
Traveling to Tallahassee,
the committee submitted
their compelling arguments
and in May 1983 Braden
Castle Park celebrated their
victory. Fears for the en-
croachment of a bridge
faded away with the protec-
tion of the Historic Regis-
ter.
This community, planned so
well 90 years ago, continues
to function as a place to en-
joy the Florida sunshine,
make and enjoy friends, and
to practice the skill of living
in such small homes so close
together. Our Founders
would be proud.

R e d H a t L a d i e s First I want to wish all my Red Hatters a Merry Christmas
and a wonderful new year to come. We had two new mem-
bers join us on December 18th at our Christmas party at
Anna Maria Oyster Bar. Both names were Ann so we had
four Anns which was really fun trying to talk to any par-
ticular one "Ann". Our January get together is Thursday
January 15th. We are going to Millers Dutch Kitchen,
leaving at 11:30. Signup sheet is on the wall next to the
office. Looking forward to more new members and it was
so nice to see some old members back with us.
Your Queen Mum, Ann Zelen
Joanne Burek wants to express her sin-
cere gratitude for the $354.10 donated by
BC residents for our Adopt-a-Family
Christmas project. Joanne purchased and
wrapped $154.10 in Christmas gifts. The
family will also receive a $200 Wal-Mart gift card.
We have all en-
joyed the lovely
Christmas
decorations
throughout the
park and in both our halls. It took many hands to put
that "festive" look to our surroundings but now the
time has come to put those things to bed for another
year.
Many helping hands are needed again. Décor removal is
scheduled for Saturday, January 3rd following
the 8:30 am Coffee & Donut gathering .....(approximate
starting time is 9:15 am). If you are able, please con-
sider lending a helping hand.
Where are our Bricks? Ahh, it seems patience is a cost effective virtue for our memorial project. Although our
bricks have been ordered through a local supplier—that supplier has yet to receive our three pallets of bricks.
Apparently the manufacturer in Georgia has two shipping costs. If we patiently wait until our brick order can be
shipped with other orders coming to Florida, our shipping cost is what was originally quoted for the project. IF we
want our bricks shipped NOW our local source will need to pass on additional “expedited” shipping cost—
approximately $1000.
So—where are our bricks? They are sitting in Georgia ready to head our way as soon as the shipping can be
worked out cost effectively. In case you’re wondering, our memorial project coordinator, Glenna Shanahan could
be described as impatient on this matter.

The Florida Department of Transportation has partnered with the Federal Highway Administration, Mana-
tee County, the Cities of Palmetto and Bradenton, and the Sarasota/ Manatee Metropolitan Planning Organization
(MPO) to conduct a transportation analysis called the Central Manatee Network Alternatives Analysis (CMNAA) in
Manatee County.
The CMNAA area boundaries are 26th Street W. on the west, Ellenton-Gillette Road on the east, 17th
Avenue W. on the south, and 17th Street W. on the north as shown on the map below.
The CMNAA will identify viable improvements that support mobility, accessibility, safety, economic, and
quality of life goals shared by local governments and communities within the study area. Some of these improve-
ment projects may be simply implemented in the short term, while other larger or more complex projects may be
advanced to future phases of development. All identified projects will be submitted through the MPO project se-
lection and prioritization process.
The CMNAA study is divided into three phases: Phase 1 – Purpose and Need, Phase 2 – Alternatives Analy-
sis, and Phase 3 – Programming. We are currently in Phase 1.
The CMNAA team is currently collecting information, attending local events, and interviewing key stake-
holders to identify potential solutions to transportation safety, mobility and accessibility issues in the study area.
We have gathered invaluable information from elected officials, city and county staff, major employers, event
planners, residents, and business owners. On September 30, 2014, we interviewed Braden Castle’s own Craig
Marquart and Glenna Shanahan. Craig and Glenna provided great insight into local issues of concern as well as a
wish list of improvements they would like for Braden Castle residents. They were interested in improved bicycle/
pedestrian facilities near Braden Castle and improvements at the 27th Street intersection signal. They also rec-
ommended the CMNAA Team make a presentation at the Braden Castle Board of Directors meeting in early 2015.
It is FDOT's goal to provide information in ways that are informative, easy to understand, and easily ac-
cessible. We are interested in your ideas, opinions, and knowledge of the area. Please visit our website at
www.cmnaa.com for further information, a calendar of events, and to provide your comments. Your feedback is
essential in helping us define transportation issues and identify potential solutions within the CMNAA study area.

While playing cards at the LH in December, Verle Gross had an experience of a lifetime—a QUADRUPLE PINOCHLE.
Since I’m not a pinochle player I went to the internet to search for the probability of re-ceiving such a hand. I found that the chances of a single pinochle is 1 out of 6, a double pinochle is 1 out of 400. The odds of a triple and quadruple are so small that I couldn’t find it on any website. For our purposes, we can just say Verle is our 1 in a million!
