President(aka Fearless Leader)

‘Tis the SeasonA look out the window and…well…how much time before the majority of us put our rides away for the season – six weeks if we’re lucky. In contrast to the obvious end of season disappointment, the cold and dense air does makes for more power and fun…. In similar context, our last purely social event of the year has come and gone…the fall color tour. Despite a day where the threat and eventual appearance of rain loomed large, the event was a solid success. We had a very good turn-out, great roads to drive, great scenery, great company, some new faces, and a great restaurant at the end of the tour. Many thanks to Brenda and Michael Pillay as well as Amanda and Wayne Walter for their efforts in hosting this year’s tour.

RecognitionIt’s important for the majority of our membership – those that cannot make out Club Meetings with any regularity, to know what an incredible group of folks contribute and guide our Club. No egos, no hidden agendas, quiet competency – these people, from diversified backgrounds have come together to help to perpetuate the Club. I have had the luxury of tremendous contributions from our Board, Chair-people, past Presidents, a corps of articulate and skillful driving instructors as well as many Club-members that have invested a great deal of time, energy and resource in hosting social events. Without their generosity the Club would cease to exist.

Help WantedI promise you, it’s not too early to think about next year’s events. We have a tall order to fill in matching the energy displayed this year that was shown in the number and varied types of events. Jeff Corbin has already volunteered to host the 2011 color tour. Of course, we need some more help with our events – don’t hesitate, if you have any inkling to host an event but have some degree of trepidation you’ll get as much help as you need!

AGM / Elections / Movie Trivial / Changes in Bylaws The Annual General Membership Meeting will be held on

Tuesday, December 7th at Karl’s Cabin located at 6005 Gotfredson Road, Plymouth, MI 48170 - (734) 455-8450. This year AGM business will be combined with the Club meeting scheduled for that evening. I invite you to attend as well and I ask that you cast your vote in the upcoming elec-tions. Remember, for the AGM Meeting to be in compliance with our bylaws, a minimum of 22 Club Members must be present. Typically, attendance at our club meetings hovers around this number; however, please consider coming to the meeting to ensure the validity of the AGM Meeting. RSVP’s will be really helpful in our planning for the event; send them to: Mary Ann Kantrow at [email protected] Does anyone know the significance of Tom Hagen. Hint, his character was portrayed by Robert Duvall…second hint, in the Godfather…. He was the consigliere or legal advisor to the family. Well, the Club is lucky enough to have its own version of Tom Hagen in the form of Michael Kimber. In addition to keeping me in line with parliamentary proce-dures, Michael has spent innumerable hours evaluating and subsequently recommending changes to our Club by-laws. These changes will certainly be provided via e-mail, and in this issue of the Bahn Stormer. I invite you to review these proposed changes.

‘Tis the Season / Holiday Party Final PlansPlans for the Holiday Party are complete, but differ slightly from what I suggested in last month’s iteration of A Few Quarts Low. Here it is with changes noted by an arrow instead of a bullet point:

The Holiday Party will be held on Saturday, February 12, 2011 at The Historic Holly Hotel – a nationally recognized restaurant known for regional and classic cuisine and profes-sional stand-up comedy! The event begins at 6:15 PM.

• The club has reserved a private, second floor, dining room for our members and guests.

• A buffet dinner will be served featuring a choice of two or three entrees as well as appropriate side dishes.

• A well-stocked cash bar will be available.• At 8:30 PM we will receive preferential seating for the

comedy show located in the lower level. The show should last about an hour and fifteen minutes and drinks are available during the show.

• After the comedy show we will return to the second floor private dining area for dessert and/or drinks.

> The cost of the event will be $40.00 per person – this will include gratuity and taxes. The Club will pick up the cost of the comedy show for its members.

• Dress is intended as business casual with sport coats

2010 Color TourStory and photos by Stewart Free

On October 2 almost 50 people braved the cool weather and rain to participate in our annual Color Tour. Thank you to Mike and Brenda Pillay and Wayne and Amanda Walter for planning and hosting this memorable event. Before begin-ning the tour our members viewed a large variety of cars; we had Targas, Turbos, old to new 911s, Cabriolets, a Cayman S, and a 928. We were able to renew old acquaintances and meet several new participants.

Mike and Wayne led us on an alliterative route starting in Fenton, through Flushing, passing near Flint, and ending in Frankenmuth. Midway through our drive, we stopped at the A & W in Flushing to warm up with hot chocolate and coffee. The Fall colors were just beginning to turn. The ongoing light

rain did not dampen our spirits or limit our driving enthusi-asm. From Flushing, we headed north and passed near New Lothrop, Montrose, and Birch Run on our way to Franken-muth.

Sullivan’s Black Forest Brew Haus and Grill was our dinner destination. It’s hard to go wrong at an establishment that features a dozen of its own handcrafted beers; the food was very good, too. Everyone seemed to enjoy the opportunity to dine and converse in a welcoming atmosphere. A few people decided to extend their adventure by stopping at the Birch Run Outlet Mall on their way home. Thanks again to the Pillays and Walters for showing us some of the roads and scenery in their part of Michigan.

David Cooper and co-host Michael Pillay enjoying good company.

In accordance with Article VII, Section 1 of the Rally Sport Region Constitution, this notice is to provide Club members with thirty days notice in advance of the Annual General Meeting on December 7, 2010 for consideration of the proposed amend-ments to the Constitution and By-Laws.

BACKGROUND

Article VI, Section 1 of the Constitution states that Club members in good standing shall consider any changes to the Consti-tution and By-Laws at the Annual General Membership meeting. Article VII, Section 1 of the Constitution requires a two-thirds (2/3) majority of the Membership present at a meeting to adopt amendments to the Constitution and By-Laws.

At the October 7, 2010 Board of Directors meeting, the Board passed a motion to recommend to the Club membership that the Constitution and Bylaw be amended as follows:

(1) Change the Secretary and Treasurer positions from Board to Club positions; (2) Increase the number of Board Members At-Large from five to seven;

(3) Increase the number required for a quorum of the Board from five to six;

(4) Require Board Members to vote initially by a show of hands, and if the vote cannot be determined, then by written ballot;

(5) Allow one or more Board Members to participate at a Board meeting via conference call;

(6) Allow the Board to take action through a unanimous consent resolution in accordance with the Michigan Business Corpo-ration Act; and

(7) Add a start date of January 1 and an end date of December 31 for all for all Club and Committee positions.

For each effected provision, we cited the provision’s original wording as it now appears in the Constitution and By-Law, fol-lowed by the proposed wording for that provision. On page 17 is a ballot for you to vote whether these amendments should be adopted.

If you have any comments, please forward them to me in writing before the Annual General Meeting on December 7, 2010.

Three positions on the board are up for election this year. Each member and his/her affiliate may vote.

The Candidates are:

Jim DowtyThough I was born in Fort Wayne, IN, I consider myself a Michigander since I have lived here for 29 years. My parents moved to Ann Arbor in 1974 and I graduated from Pioneer High School in 1983. I fell in love with VW’s in high school and 911’s with the return of the Cabriolet that same year.

After moving away to Dallas in 95, I purchased my Black on Black 1983 911SC Cab in 2001 and joined the PCA Maverick region in 2002.

My wife Helen, myself and our 2 daughters, Sophia (11) and Lexi (14), returned to Michigan in 2004 to be closer to family and raise our kids in an environment where the schools are safer, the air is cleaner and you can see the stars at night.I transferred to the Rally Sport Region and have met many wonderful people who share my passion for Porsche cars.I was privileged to be a board member from 2005 to 2007 and enjoy participating in the discussions about our region’s events and membership. I look forward to serving the club and making even more PCA friends.

Jack DunlapWhen I bought my first 911 about 15 years ago it was a light “fixer-upper”. I soon realized it was more of a challenge than I expected, so I got a part-time job at a Porsche repair shop. Soon I was on the slippery slope of improving the car for D.E. and joined PCA. I’m now thoroughly hooked! I transferred to RSR about 8 years ago because I was so impressed with the quality of our track events AND how truly friendly the people were. I have become more active with our club events the last few years trying to help out wherever I can and would like to continue on this path as a board member.

Ken KnightI’d like to throw my hat in the ring to be considered for the RS Region Board. Although a relatively new member, I’ve found the people of RSR to be serious about the club motto (fast, fun, friendly) and have enjoyed getting to know many. I believe that membership in any organization carries a responsibility to help support through actions and becoming a board member offers a way to do that. Thanks for your consideration.

Rick Mammel I am a current RSR Board Member and also Vice President. My wife Lynda and I are active participants at both track and social events. Through this participation we are fortunate to have made many great friendships. I am running for a second term as Board Member so I can continue to help guide our club to be the successful and fun organization it currently is. I have a perfect record of attendance at board meetings during my first term and that dedication will continue if elected to my second term as Board Member. I will continue to encourage new membership, assist with dynamic event development and promise to serve the club with a commitment to my fiduciary duties and ethical standards. I am proud to give my time and efforts on behalf of the Rally Sport Region.

Please vote for the Board Members of your choice on page 17.

They both have the same Wet Boiling Point (200°C) and Dry Boiling Point (280°C), which is the important part. The ATE Blue is not DOT approved because it is blue. It also seems to have a long-term affect on the plastic reservoirs, staining them blue from the inside. This makes it become difficult to see the fluid level when it should be easy.

It appears to me that the reason why they make the fluid blue was to separate the clear from the blue during brake fluid changes. If you run enough fluid through the system and do it often, the ATE Clear is what I would recommend.

Try to avoid keeping open cans of brake fluid on the shelf because it has a tendency to collect moisture, which will lower the boiling point of the fluid under extreme conditions. Until next issue- Jeff

The Art of Volunteering...or notBy RSR Affiliate Member Dianne Kimber

At last night’s Board meeting there was a discussion about recognizing people who do things on behalf of the club. It was not said aloud, but my guess is there are some underly-ing reasons for raising the subject. Is it because people who volunteer don’t get the words of affirmation they want? Do volunteers feel they do thankless jobs? Is it because some non-members are not given the recognition they deserve for donating time, space or service? Or, is it because the same people volunteer over and over again and we need to have some new blood?

I really don’t know why the issue was brought up, but I would suspect that all of the above are true.

In my former life, I was a fundraiser and event coordinator. I think I have a good idea why people volunteer and/or donate and why they do not. The one thing I am certain of is that personal attention is critical. Whether someone is solicited for money or time, if asked personally, there is a much bet-ter chance of receiving support. Moreover, once support is given, a personal thank you means more than a letter. Of course, if you are giving a million dollars to a cause, chances are that your name on a building is very attractive.

That being said, the Board conversation got me thinking about my own role as a member of the club and as a volun-teer.

I like to volunteer. It makes me feel good. It makes me feel like I have contributed. It gives me the opportunity to meet new people and do something different. It makes me feel like I have done my part in the world. In addition, as a member of RSR, it has added so much to my life.

Last summer Michael and I did our first event for RSR. With the help of Lynda and Rick Mammel, we devised a short summer run and then a picnic at our home. Then Nancy and Karl Schulz offered to do an impromptu concours after the picnic.

About 12 couples showed up. Some I had never met. Had we not volunteered our time or our home, I would have missed the opportunity for the following:

- I met Sebastian Gaeta for the first time. Not only was he a fountain of information about anything Porsche (or any-thing automotive), but when the Schulz’s 914 broke down on the first part of the run, he immediately found a car for them and arranged for their car to be transported home. Wow! Is that a friend?

- Lori Shephard, who I had also never met, (when I looked frazzled and Michael could not cook 20 burgers at a time)

took over the grill and had everything cooking without a hitch. She was a lifesaver in my kitchen when I was trying to juggle 10 things at a time.

- I think this was the first event Ken and Kathy Knight had attended, but we ended up sitting with them and learning they both had Porsches, maize and blue, the colors of some university in Michigan!

- Karl and Nancy Schulz not only put together a great im-promptu concours with professional judging, but they also brought individual awards for every car. Every person that attended felt special.

- Sally and Stewart Free took photos of everything. Had they not been there to do what they do so well, there would be no record of our event!

Earlier this summer we hosted our second event with a trip to the Gilmore Museum. This time we had the help of a great staff at the Gilmore, which made my job very easy. We had fun touring the outstanding museum and then having lunch at an authentic 1950’s diner. This activity was a snap.The point is, volunteering to do an event is fun and reward-ing.

As a club member, I feel an obligation to do my part to make the club better. Sometimes it does not take much effort. Sometimes it does. Nevertheless, it is always worthwhile. I know that I have made friendships in the club that will last a lifetime because I extended myself.

Therefore, as the Rally Sport Region Board debates whether to acknowledge an individual’s contribution with a button or pin or letter, I want to personally acknowledge all the club members who give so unselfishly of their time. Whether it is on a social event, at the track, on the newsletter or serving on the Board, or the vendors who make our club activities possible, I thank you.

I vote for every club member to make a personal investment in the club and offer to do something, anything. Even if you do not get a button or pin, we will all be very grateful you helped to keep this club so great.
