T H E B I G E THE HIGHLY COVETED 1958 EDSEL CITATION CONVERTIBLE
Part Two by Phil Skinner
IN THIS ISSUE:
On pages 4 & 5 are the registration form and agenda for the upcoming 2015
Edsel Owners Club Annual Convention in Sacramento, California.
The meet will take place August 5 - 9, 2015, at the Lions Gate Hotel
(Continued from the May 2015 Big E Issue)
The Edsel Division supplied a number of Citation convertibles for everything from the Grand
Marshall's car for the 1958 Rose Parade in Pasadena, California, to reportedly, several Royal Blue
metallic and Frost White units, with gold-white vinyl interiors, for the visit of Queen Elizabeth II.
Citation convertibles could be ordered with tops in four different colors, black, white, turquoise or
copper. Unfortunately on the Somerville cars there was no indication on the data plate, nor any-
where else, as to which color top was installed. But for owners of Wayne built cars, there is often
found a clue on the "buck" tag. This little metal tag has a series of embossed numbers and was
placed on the body before it was painted. It had codes on it for the color, interior trim, and the top
color, on convertibles. There were also codes for other factory-applied accessories that needed a
modification to the body to complete installation such as power steering and rocker panel mold-
ings.
The base price of the Citation convertible was advertised at $3,766. However, by the time the
mandatory options were added in, as well as common options including power steering and brakes,
push button radio, padded sunvisors (padded dashboard was standard as was the electric clock),
back-up lights, bumper guards and maybe a tachometer, the final bill could total well past the
$4,300 mark, a pretty hefty price in the fall of 1957 and equal today to over $50,000!
Little is known about the knock-down exports and to date, only one of the six has ever been found.
Located in Sweden, it was built up at Ford's facility in Antwerp, Belgium, and was last reported to be
in the process of restoration.
Considered the most impressive and expensive Edsel when new, and among the top-dollar cars for
collectors today, the Citation convertible is the epitome of conspicuous consumption during the
second term of President Eisenhower. And yes, according to records and at least one photo, a dark-
colored, probably black, Citation convertible was rumored to have served in the White House Fleet! (Continued on Page 3)

Hello Edsel Folks!
As the 47th EOC convention is upon us, I'd like to urge everyone to check your Edsels
thoroughly before heading out on the road, and always keep a few basic tools and
spare parts with you. It always seems that the more spares you carry, the less likely you
are to need them!
I regret that I won't be able to attend this year, for several reasons, not the least of
which is my recuperation from a herniated disc in my back. I've been back to work for a
few weeks, but don't believe I should take a chance on traveling so extensively just yet.
I certainly will miss seeing my Edsel friends this year, and the chance to see beautiful
California again. I hope 2016 will be better for travelling!
A bit of happier news; on June 12th I became a new grandfather! Cylas Wesley Mudek
was born to Hayley and David, and is just the best baby. I'm truly blessed in so many
ways.
Until next time,
Regards,
George

Shades of Yellow - by Jason Peters
The month of May not only signifies the start of awakening our classic cars from their winter slumber, but for me it was the end of a busy
semester at school. Finding time for getting anything done was becoming increasingly difficult to come by and often meant choosing
between my studies and getting some much needed shop time in. By this point, I had all but decided on having my engine professionally
rebuilt rather than entrusting the task to my still-developing skill set. After teetering for a few weeks on which machine shop would do
their best with my original E400 engine, I finally made up my mind, gathered up a few of the guys, loaded up the old boat anchor and
away we went!
Overall, the E400 was in decent, yet crusty shape. Years of sitting in the outdoors of Utah had not been kind to her, especially once
water found its way inside a few of the valves. In addition, my intake manifold had developed a crack at some point on the underside.
After receiving a replacement, which unfortunately was also cracked, we decided the best option was to have mine repaired. After three
weeks, the shop had my engine finished and ready for pick up. This landed right at finals week and the semester was all but over.
Since I was taking Automotive Paint this semester, I wanted to try and use as many of the skills I was learning as possible. After putting it
out to the knowledge of the Edsel Restoration & Preservation group, I decided against the rattle can method and to instead spray it with
a paint gun. Among the responses, it was recommended that a soft yellow close to what was offered on early 1971 General Motors color
was pretty close to the original Edsel E400 hue. There are literally hundreds of shades of yellow so getting as close to authentically
correct was important to me. My professor had given me the go-ahead to not only custom-mix the paint color, but also allowed me to
paint my block using the school’s paint booth. After getting the block prepped and masked off, we wheeled it into the booth and there
was no turning back. I sprayed it with two coats of red oxide primer for good adhesion followed by three coats of my custom-mixed yellow.
The results were quite pleasing! I will continue to report on the progress of the Pacer restoration in upcoming issues of the Big E.
Edsel Restoration Progress Report
The Highly Coveted Citation Convertible - Part two by Phil Skinner (continued from Page 1)
Below is a chart of all 16 available colors and based on the main body color, how many we have on record of each:
Note: S = Sommerville Plant, W= Wayne Plant
Code/Color S W Total Code/Color S W Total
A Jet Black 12 7 19 J Ice Green 0 1 1
B Silver Gray Met 3 2 5 K Spring Green 0 0 0
C Ember Red 8 10 18 L Spruce Green Met. 0 0 0
D Turquoise 11 14 25 M Charcoal Brown Met. 2 2 4
E Frost White 29 16 45 Q Jonquil Yellow 2 1 3
F Powder Blue 2 2 4 T Chalk Pink 3 10 13
G Horizon Blue 0 0 0 U Copper Met. 8 6 14
H Royal Blue Met. 1 1 2 X Gold Met. 15 13 29
As you can see, blues and green were very rarely seen on the Citation convertibles, the main reason being a lack of color-matching
interiors. Only five different color combinations were offered in interiors on Citation convertibles. They include: Pink & Brown (code AC),
Turquoise & White (code S), Red & White (code AD), Gold & White (code T), and Copper & White (code AE).
