How clean do my recyclables need to be?
Cleaner is better. Rinse cans, bottles and jars to remove food residue. Here are some other pointers for preparing recyclables:
Leave plastic caps and lids on, they can also be recycled
Remove lids from glass jars
Metal caps can also be collected and recycled
Flatten boxes
Remove pumps from spray bottles
Do not place recyclables in plastic bags
When kids go back to school, pack them a “No Waste Lunch”. Buy food items in bulk, then put them in reusable containers and lunch boxes. It usually saves you money as well.
Buy items made of recycled content and reuse them as much as you can. For instance, use both sides of every page of a notebook before moving on to a new one. Use the back side of unneeded, “printed on” paper as a scratch pad.
Many people are switching to homemade cleaners to reduce exposure to hazardous chemicals. Inexpensive ingredients like baking soda, vinegar and dish soap often clean just as well as store-bought products. You can find more information about non-toxic cleaners at www.reduce.org.
Blue Bag Organics
Organics-food scraps and food soiled paper products-are a resource, not a waste. They make up approximately 25% of what we throw away. By participating in the organics recycling program, these items are sent to a composting
facility. Instead of taking up space in a landfill or being burned in the incinerator, they are recycled into compost-
a valuable resource used in landscaping and road construction projects. The cost of the program is $79.99 per year and anyone new to the program will receive a $40 discount for the first year. You will also receive the 65 gallon
cart for the 35 gallon price. Contact City Hall to opt-in.

HYDRANT FLUSHING
City water hydrants will be flushed on the second Wednesday of each month, April through October. Flushing will
begin at 8:00 am and finish by 11:30 am. Low water pressure may be experienced during this time. The flushing
process may loosen rust sediments in the water lines, so please clear your pipes prior to doing laundry. The best way
to do this is to run your outside faucet until the water is clear. If you want to be notified of hydrant flushings, contact
the city to be added to the Public Notification System or complete the form on page 6 of this newsletter. The form is
also on the city website.
We all live in a watershed — the area that drains to a common waterway, such as a stream, lake, river, wetland, or
even the ocean — and our individual actions directly affect it. In Loretto, our rain and stormwater runoff flow to
Lake Independence and Lake Sarah. Each newsletter will include guidelines you can follow to help make a difference
in the quality of our local waters.
Best Practices: Rake leaves, seeds and grass clippings out of the street and gutter and especially out of storm drains. These organic materials are all sources of phosphorus which turns
our lakes and rivers green with algae. Phosphorus attaches to soil. Preventing erosion will keep soil from washing into the
street and down the storm drain. Sweep up grass clippings and fertilizer from driveways, sidewalks and streets. Never
blow your clippings into the street. They will wash down the storm drains. Bag your leaves for the Nov. 4 city leaf and grass collection day or take them directly
to the Medina compost and brush site. See below for more information. Replace turf with native plants. Swap your high-maintenance lawn for low-
maintenance native ground cover, plants or grasses. Many native plants develop
deeper root structures than turf grass, which reduces runoff by allowing for better
water infiltration.
Reduce your footprint. Replace some pavement, such as a walk, patio or driveway, with pavers or pervious pavement. The porous surface will allow water to seep
through, reducing the amount of water that runs off into the storm sewer.
