Every St. Patrick’s Day I tell myself I am going to refrain from participating in the celebration. Year after year it’s the same thing, trouble. Well, I have to tell you this year was no different. It all started innocently enough. Get a few beers in me, and it’s not hard to get me to wear a green hat and start smoking a pipe. Those of you who know me know that I’m kind of a smallish guy anyway. (Editor Note: “Smallish?” -- now that’s Balarny -- as the true Irish would say!) Combine the pipe and hat with my full red beard and heavy Irish accent, it’s hard to blame anyone for mistaking me for a leprechaun. Each and every year.

This year was the worst, though. A few people at the bar who had maybe even more to drink than I did decided that they wanted my pot o’ gold. Most years I’m fast enough to outrun them, and keep my gold safe. This year, as I was running away, I tripped on a shamrock and broke my shillelagh, and so they caught me. Even after the fairly severe thrashing I received, I still managed to keep my gold. It took some negotiat-ing. It cost me three boxes of breakfast cereal with marshmallow candies, and my prized autographed Enya CD, but I had to do what I had to do. Never again, I tell you.

But enough about me. Here’s a little something I got through the grapevine: First they water cooled the rear engine cars, then they built an SUV, followed by a four door sedan. What could possibly be next? Re-member, you heard it here first. Are you sitting down? Get this… ....A full size pickup.

I know, it’s crazy, isn’t it? I hear it will have a full steel frame, a 3 liter V6 standard with a turbo diesel V12 optional, and will have a towing capacity of thirty thousand pounds. It is rumored that it will do 0-60 in 5.6 sec at gross weight! I’m told a test mule driven by Sabine Schmitz has already done a low 8 at the ring, with her M5 in tow! It will not have cup holders.

Ok, enough April foolery.

This weekend I attended our annual Zone 4 Presi-dents’ Meeting. As is always the case, the meeting was very informative. PCA Vice President Manny Alban was our guest speaker. His presentation in-cluded some interesting statistics about our members. Results were based on a survey of 5000 randomly chosen members. The survey indicated that the most popular reason to join PCA is for access to technical information. This was followed closely by Panorama and local newsletters such as our own Bahn Stormer. Discounts rank pretty high on the list. (I’ve mentioned before that you should ask your dealer if they have a PCA discount.) One of the best sources of informa-tion, technical and otherwise, is the PCA website, www.pca.org. While a great resource, the sight is admittedly hard to navigate. A new, more navigable website should be rolling out very soon. The update will include user forums for discussions with other members. I am looking forward to the update and will be checking the site frequently for improvements.

As you can see, your club has several Social Events to look forward to this year. In April Matt Huber is host-ing a visit to RM Motorsports in Wixom. Last time we were there they were busy refurbishing cars for the King of Thailand! They had some awesome old Mercs. They also had a drag racer that they fired up for us to hear. Some guys have had a hearing problem ever since!! This time they are working on a new race car. Should be very interesting.RM Motorsports is mostly for the half of the club who eat and sleep cars! For the others there is a Breakfast Run in early May, hosted by Rob and Jan Potts. We are not certain where we are starting out, but we know it will be a great place, and a fun drive afterwards. We’d love to have some of our new members join us. It’s a great chance to get to know others in our club and find out why we are the Fast, Fun, FRIENDLY Region! In June there is another Dam Rally which Mike and Kathy O’Rear are hosting. Look for more details in next month’s Bahn Stormer, but come prepared to count red barns! The members of the Events Committee look forward to seeing you at some of our events, and hearing from you if there is something you would especially like the group to do.

Almost 100 Rally Sport Region (RSR) members and friends met at the Lingenfelter Collection Open House on March 21. Since there were other car clubs in attendance, even the parking lot held many interest-ing cars; there were Corvettes, Ferraris, Lambo-rghinis, Studebakers, and several Porsches. Kenneth Lingenfelter owns Metropolitan Motor Sports and the Lingenfelter Collection that buys and sells collector cars. Last year he acquired Lingenfelter Performance Engineering (LPE) in Indiana. LPE is a performance tuner offering engine building, chassis and engine tun-ing, specialty automotive parts, and prototype prepa-ration/development. The Collection holds about 150 vehicles separated into 3 large rooms: (1) American muscle, (2) Cor-vettes, and (3) European exotics. Every vehicle was spotless, connected to a battery tender, and appeared ready to drive. As a matter of fact, a Ferrari Enzo was fired up just so we could appreciate its thunderous music. (1) The American muscle area contained pristine examples of the Oldsmobile 442, Chevelle, Camaro, Mustang, Saleen S7, Cobra 427 replica, Ford GT,

Prowler, AAR Hemi Cuda, GTO, DeLorean, Firebird, and more.

(2) The Corvette area had models from the earliest to the latest. A C12 Corvette with a blue carbon fiber body was unique. There were also models modified by Lingenfelter, Callaway, Katech, and Pratt and Miller. (3) The European exotics seemed to be the most interesting to our RSR members. This collection included everything from Rolls-Royce, Bentley, Bugatti Veyron W16.4, and Mercedes SLR McLaren to Aston Martin, Audi R8, Vector, Ferrari Enzo, F40, and others. There were 2 Lamborghini Gallardos and a Reventon inside as well as 2 Countachs outside. The Porsches included a Cayman, Slant Nose, Turbo, Carrera GT, and a rare (one of 337) 959. After viewing this Collection several members met at Bakers of Milford for lunch. All the RSR members enjoyed the large display of diverse automobiles. Con-sidering that the Lamborghini Reventon sells for about $1.4 million and the Enzo Ferrari trades for over $1 million, this show was priceless. Thanks to Mary Jo and Chuck Freitas for hosting this outstanding event.

$$$$ I would like to share with you the difference between ATE Super Blue Racing (ATE Blue) and ATE TYP 200 (ATE Clear) and why I prefer ATE Clear.

They both have the same Wet Boiling Point (200°C) and Dry Boiling Point (280°C), which is the important part. The ATE Blue is not DOT approved because it is blue. It also seems to have a long-term affect on the plastic reservoirs, staining them blue from the inside. This makes it become difficult to see the fluid level when it should be easy.

It appears to me that the reason why they make the fluid blue was to separate the clear from the blue during brake fluid changes. If you run enough fluid through the system and do it often, the ATE Clear is what I would recommend.

Try to avoid keeping open cans of brake fluid on the shelf because it has a tendency to collect moisture, which will lower the boiling point of the fluid under extreme conditions. Until next issue- Jeff

The 4M/Munk’sMotors /PUB Racing team headed down to Road Atlanta for the 2008 American Road Race of Champions (ARRC) on November 8th.Driver Vaughan Scott in his #77 Porsche 924 qualified third in ITB despite the cold and the early-morning sun. His time was only .058s off the pole time of

1:47.9 set by Chris Schaafs-ma in his VW Golf, and that afternoon, only one driver, a local in a BMW who didn’t do well in Q1, managed to beat Schaafsma and Scott, taking the pole by a few tenths.

The rain moved in that eve-ning, soaking the track and adding to the expected cold early-morning race-day conditions. Fortunately, most of the track had dried by race time, but the sun was still low, the track was still cold, and there were still damp spots, including some standing water at the bottom of the Esses.

The start went well and everyone was on the ball up front, with the BMW and Golf on the front row, Deuce Keane starting outside Scott, and Peter Keane and

Sam Moore behind. The Keane brothers were both driving Honda Ac-cords, with Moore in a Volvo. This lead group of four, with the Volvo trailing slightly, all got around the BMW and pulled ahead of the rest of the field.

The excitement started on the 4th lap. While Scott was running in 3rd on the way to the back straight, Schaafsma in the VW Golf made a good move to the inside of the Porsche under braking to take the line. However he failed to pull clear through the turn, and tracked out into the front of the 924, pushing Scott wide and into the wet red Georgia clay. This was a mi-nor mistake which was then compounded as the 924 turned hard on re-entering the track for some reason - sending the car hard towards the inside wall.

However, the Volvo behind was too close to avoid, and plowed hard into the right-hand side of the 924, just behind the front right wheel. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise: though the car sustained significant damage, it didn’t make it to the wall, and despite being thrown into a 270-degree spin, was still fairly close to straight. The Volvo didn’t fare so well,

however; he was thrown hard into the wall the 924 was about to hit, and was forced to park the car right then and there.

It’s estimated that the Volvo was going 60-65mph at impact, while the Porsche was doing only about 20mph down the track. Thank goodness for a stout rollcage and an ISAAC head and heck restraint. No whiplash or other injuries sustained, despite a mas-sive wallop.

Rolling now backwards after the second impact, Scott reversed the steering to throw a quick Rockford turn (Hawaii Five-O style!) to point the car the right way, find a gear, and resume forward progress. By the end of the back straight, the 924 was back up to speed, and Scott saw that the car was still tracking fairly straight. Despite the crash and about 12 seconds lost, the lead pack had pulled such a lead on the rest of the field that Scott hadn’t lost a single position: he was still running in 4th.

Chugging on, the car seemed to be only slightly off in handling from the impact, and was still able to turn competitive laps, though a little less consistently than before. Scott appeared to make progress on Peter Keane in 2nd place – the Golf having put himself into the wall two laps after the incident, bending his car, moving back to 5th place (though able to continue), and moving Scott back up to 3rd place.

REMINDER: The Treasurer’s Report is available to any RSR Club member. E-Mail your request to Burghard Linn ([email protected]). Insurance: The certificate for the Spring Car Tour has been sent in.

Goody Store Report: Jim Christopher absent. No report.

Advertising Report: Owen Balduf reported that funds are being collected. Billings for 2009 are under-way.

Membership: Pat reported for Glenn. We currently have 218 members. No new members this month.

Charity Committee: Arnie Spieker reported for the committee. The committee rejected the raffle idea. They feel that they need to expand the Porsche

Birthday party and increase the attendance. They would like to see another committee formed to acquire items for the silent auction. They are also looking for ideas to improve attendance. The committee has recommendations for local, national and international charities. The charity research will be available on the website. Motion: Establishment of a silent auction committee. Approved.

Track Report: Christian Maloof reported that on-line registration would be available this year. The fee for track events will remain the same as last year but an extra fee will be charged for credit card use. Pat will get the registration form to Valerie. Dan Gaulin will be our track registrar for one more season but we need a new volunteer for next year.Motion to spend up to $1000 for the projector. Ap-proved

Newsletter: The deadline is March 22nd.

Website: Valerie Roedenbeck has updated the web-site with new content. She will enter the website in the National contest.

Events Committee: Sally and Stewart Free, Sue Sarin and Valerie Roedenbeck met on Monday. They would like to increase attendance at events and will add a note to the newsletter and website to ask the membership for event ideas. Valerie is planning an event around the Grand-Am cup race that Christian will be driving in. Another idea would be to invite members to the Novice Day on May 26 for a post DE dinner. The committee is looking for a better name for the Porsche Birthday Party Event.

Another year of toying with the idea of trying your hand at track driving? Make this the year!

Driver’s education events offer the perfect chance for car lovers to learn more about performance driving.

What is Driver’s Education?

Rally Sport Region’s drivers’ education is nothing like the driving classes you had in high school (or perhaps through the Sears Driving School). RSR’s DEs offer you the chance to learn advanced driving techniques on a real race track. DEs take place over the course of a day or weekend, pairing drivers of all levels with certified instructors and allowing them to experience driving at speed. Our sessions are a safe and chal-lenging way for you to experience driving a Porsche the way it was meant to be driven. If you love your car and have always wanted to learn more about driving technique, join us!

When you participate in Rally Sport Region DEs you get...

* An experienced PCA instructor (who in many cases is a current or former race driver) assigned to you for the duraction of the course. You’ll develop a relationship that will allow you to apply and refine what you learn on and off the track. * Two or more classroom sessions covering proper driving technique. The classes offer plenty of time to ask questions. * Four hands-on driving sessions (“runs”) on the track. No need to worry about people being faster/slower than you; you will be assigned to a group ac-cording to your experience and ability. * “Hot Laps”: the option to ride in your instructor’s car or have the instructor drive your car at speed. This is a great way to see firsthand what a car can do. * Breakfast, lunch and beverages are included and supervised by RSR Treasurer/chef extraordinaire Burghard Linn. * If needed, a free loaner helmet. * A guaranteed relaxed, collegial and fun atmo-sphere!

So, if you are ready to explore the capabilities of your car join us for one of our Drivers’ Education events.Complete and submit the form on the facing page or, even more conveniently, check out the Rally Sport Region website (rsp.pca.org), under the Drivers Edu-cation tab.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. (March 17, 2009) - Have a passion for sports cars? Have a desire to support a worthy cause? You can do both this October, and have fun in the process. The inaugural Grand-Am Sports Car Road Rally, a four-day, three-night journey through the mountains of Georgia, North Carolina and Virginia, will take place Oct. 15-18, less than a week following the Grand-Am Rolex Sports Car Series presented by Crown Royal Cask No. 16 season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway. The rally is an all-inclusive package that includes hotel accommodations, meals, fuel, apparel, ride and drive at Virginia International Raceway and more. The event, which will visit some of the most luxurious resorts in the area and provide participants with some of the most beautiful scenery in the U.S., will benefit

and bring awareness to Camp Boggy Creek, the offi-cial charity of Grand-Am. Camp Boggy Creek enriches the lives of children who have life-threatening illness by creating camping experiences that are memorable, exciting, fun, empowering, physically safe and medi-cally sound. Participants will begin Thursday, Oct. 15 at the Cha-teau Élan Winery & Resort in Braselton, Ga., located a few miles north of Atlanta. The resort combines French and Southern hospitality, and is well-known for its scenic vineyards and on-site winery. From there, participants will travel about 100 miles north, just a few miles across the North Carolina border, to the Old Edwards Inn in Highlands. Old Edwards Inn operates as a full-service spa destination resort in the Smokey Mountains. On Saturday, participants will travel due east and ar-rive at Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C. The resort

RSR PCA has been holding a Charity event for many years and the proceeds have been donated to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Discussions after the last Ferry Porsche Birthday Party/Charity Auction questioned whether this was the most effective use of the proceeds. The RSR board established a Charity Committee to investigate other options and present them to the membership for a vote. This year the Rally Sport Region intends to split the funds raised at our events between international (20%), national (30%) and local (50%) chari-ties. The following charities are offered for your consideration in each category. We would like to know your preferences for how the funds are distributed. Please complete the ballot at the end of this article and mail it with your response to the Events Committee Survey on pages 11 and 12.

Thank you for your input.

Clear blue skies made the drive into Detroit pleasant. A small group of RSR members met at the Laikon Cafe for a Greek lunch on February 28th. It was a great chance to catch up on everyone’s activities since our Holiday Party. After lunch we rode the People Mover to the Cobo Convention Center to enjoy the 102nd Detroit Kennel Club Dog Show. The Detroit Show is unusual in that is a “benched” format. This arrangement allows visitors to get close to over 150 breeds of registered purebred dogs and to talk with their owners, handlers, and breeders. In addition to the formal judging, there were demonstrations of obedience, field work, agility, Leader Dogs for the Blind, and search and rescue.

Our hosts, Lorraine and Dan Faust, were interested in the Labrador Retrievers. Lori and Scott Shepard gravi-tated to the Chows while Dru, Matt, and Zach Huber sought out the Boxers. Sally and Stewart Free watched the judging of the English Cocker Spaniels and actually selected the Best of Breed before the judge agreed. Thanks to Lorraine and Dan for arranging an enjoyable winter outing.

Goodyear Tires has teamed up with independent tuner and classic Porsche publication 9magazine to search for the best Porsches in America. “We are looking for not only the unrestored, concours cars, but the daily driv-ers and the tweaked Porsches as well,” commented Brian Minson, Editor of 9magazine. Goodyear Tires and 9magazine will be selecting more than a dozen cars to be featured in the magazine during 2009-2010. These selected cars will receive a set of new Goodyear Eagle tires in the size desired by the Porsche owner. The tires will be shipped directly from Goodyear Tires to the car owner prior to a feature photo shoot, the only cost for the car owner will be mounting and balancing.

Featured cars will grace the cover of 9magazine and have their unique story of the Porsche and driver written. “This is a great opportunity for every Porsche owner to not only get hooked up with a great set of new shoes, but show off their pride-n-joy” added Minson.

Deadline for submitting a 100 word description and two or three photos of the Porsche is April 30th. Submis-sions should be send to [email protected] or to 9magazine, Goodyear Tire Promotion, 20 East White Mountain Blvd., #A5-356, Lakeside, AZ 85929.

The 924 hit lapped traffic with about 5 laps to go. The whole time, the chasing VW Golf of Aaron Stehly has been trying to chase down Scott, closing very slowly, a half a second a lap. At this rate, Scott might have been able to hold him off through the last lap, but the lapped traffic failed to yield, held up the Porsche badly, and the Golf was able to close the remaining gap. Five corners later, the Golf was able to motor by and take 3rd.

Just as Scott and the Golf swapped positions, the sec-ond place Accord of Peter Keane spun into the wall, moving Stehly up to 2nd, and Scott to 3rd. However the 924 was able to regain the advantage under brak-ing at the end of the straight and move up into 2nd.The Golf gave chase for a couple of laps, helping push the Porsche down the back straight, but it was clear that the aero advantage of the 924 had been thrown away by the crash damage. Sure enough, on the last lap, the Golf motored by on the straight into turn 6 to take 2nd. Despite hanging on through turn 7, the Golf pulled a significant lead down the back straight, and Scott’s best challenge on the brakes only served to catch right back up to the Golf’s rear bum-per, following down the hill to the checker in third.

Somewhat disappointing for Scott, given that the team went down with a good chance to win, and knowing that the 924 was the car to beat this weekend - but considering the level of damage on the car, it’s still impressive that he was able to make the podium, and the champagne still tasted good. Munk’s Motors is proud of him.

And on Sunday, Oct. 18, par-ticipants will end their journey at Virginia International Raceway in Alton, Va., the site of two Grand-Am race weekends in 2009. The track will host a ride and drive, giving participants the opportunity to tour, at speed, one of the most scenic tracks on the Grand-Am circuit. During the rally, participants will partake in fine dining, wine tastings and silent auctions. Other forms of enter-tainment, including an optional golf outing, are also scheduled. Participants may compete in any sports car they choose, and single (driver only) and double (driver and rider) packages are available. Space is limited, so interested parties are encouraged to register now. Corporate sponsorships are available.
