It’s Her Trailer And She’ll Burn It If She Wants To

Mistie Rae Love, 38, of 37840 Daughtery Road, was arrested by the Pasco Sheriff’s De-partment on Nov. 12 on a charge of arson dwelling/structure/vehicle, first degree.

Love allegedly set fire to her residence, causing extensive damage to

her home and the property within.Multiple witnesses saw Love enter her

residence and leave it shortly before the blaze started. When a witness told Love that her home was on fire, she allegedly stated that it was her trailer and she does what she wants with it.

A second witness stated that Love had informed them that she was going to start the fire before committing the act.

Post Miranda, Love denied starting the blaze. She was placed taken to the Pasco County jail.

Love

that the city has three options, but the untimely news could be a huge factor in a decision. He told members of council that the city could bring the function back in-house, could contract with another company similar to Fathom or go with VertexOne, who is willing to take on Fathom customers to ensure a seamless transition.

Poe noted that bringing utility billing in-house could take a minimum of six months to happen because of the implementation of billing software, the hiring of additional staff and training. Staff is also investigating the option of other billing companies.

Fathom’s announcement allowed the city just 19 days to determine how they are going to bill 11,000 customers for water and sewer service. Fathom officials reported that their efforts to secure an investment to save the business failed leaving them little choice but to close its doors at the end of the month.

“That is sort of a blessing in disguise,” said councilwoman Jodi Wilkeson. “I think our residents have had a lot of issues in the customer service aspect. I think the software works great and the meters are good.”

Poe said VertexOne, which reportedly bills utility customers in Washington, D.C, Jacksonville, Pinellas County and Lee County to name a few, is willing to purchase the software from Fathom and train their employees in order to take on the Zephyrhills customers.

He added that there would be no change in service. Customers would use the same portals to pay bills.

There is a catch. The city paid Fathom

$600,000 per year and VertexOne could charge up to 20 percent more or $720,000 annually. Poe emphatically announced that the increased would be handled by the city and not passed on to utility customers.

If the city follows the path to VertexOne, the city would have to enter in a multi-year contract. The city could use the time to work on returning the utility billing back to the city, however the city could have to pay a buyout to be released from the contract.

The largest complaint from residents about Fathom since the company took over the utility billing was poor customer service. Poe said the city is currently looking into bringing the customer service back to the Zephyrhills Utility Department, which will require additional staff.

“For me, I’ve never been happy with Fathom,” said councilman Charlie Proctor. “It was a big mistake. I wish we had never done it. It is a perfect opportunity for us to bring everything back in-house. That’s the way I want to see it. This is an opportunity for us to right a wrong.”

City Council will hold a special meeting Monday to make a recommendation on which avenue they will pursue. Fathom has 22 other municipal accounts that are in the same boat.

“It’s hard to get direction because everything is changing so fast,” said Maggard. “VertexOne requires so many customers to come on board to make it profitable for them. While we jockeying around to figure out what we’re doing, we are waiting to see what other cities are doing.”

Honored For Her Service

The First United Methodist Church honored Norma Hall on Sunday. For her decades of service to the church’s thrift shop the church unveiled a sign renaming the shop the Norma Hall Thrift Shop. Having turned 99 recently, Hall simply reacted to the rechristening with, ‘I’m overwhelmed.’ Patricia Nugent presented Hall with a prayer shawl and Pastor Jim Thomas, back, said ‘The growth of the thrift store during her time here has been staggering.’ Nearly 50 folks turned out for the event. Zephyrhills and Pasco County, were displayed. Also, the Zephyrhills Police Department had one of its modern SUVs parked next to an older model Chevrolet Caprice that the department had used in the past.

The driver of a truck from the city’s public works department thrilled onlookers by demonstrating how many

ways a trash dumpster could be twirled. This could almost be mistaken for a carnival ride until viewers got a closer look.

Mr. Tommy held three shows at Time Square during which youngsters of all ages were entertained. They joined him in singing, laughing and dancing while their family members enthusiastically watched.

Vendors offered delicious sandwiches and other food items. Beverages, including beer for adults and soft drinks for others, were also available.

Attendance at the event was good despite cool temperatures and brief rain sprinkles.

Those who wanted to could also have their faces painted during the fun event.

Main Street originally planned to hold Touch-A-Truck in September but it was postponed to November because of inclement weather.

Historic Church Organ To Be RepairedTwo things have remained constant in the last 45 years at the

iconic 130-year-old First Presbyterian Church in Dade City. One is the awe-inspiring presence of an original Karl Wilhelm

tracker-style pipe organ and the other is the parishioner who has played it since it arrived on Sept. 29, 1974. Both are now retired, but only one is retiring for good.

She is Katherine “Kitty” Piersall, an elder emeritus at the church, who is also a cancer survivor. Piersall worked for the Pasco County School District for several years. She was an assistant principal at Moore-Mickens Education Center, and principal at San Antonio Elementary and Thomas E. Weightman Middle schools. She has played the Wilhelm pipe organ since it was delivered in 1974.

Piersall has held several positions since joining the church in 1972, including organist and choir director. She is now stepping down to enjoy the organ’s splendor from a church pew rather than the organ’s bench.

“It’s time for me not to play anymore. It’s getting harder for me to be comfortable sitting on the bench,” Piersall said.

But the organ’s temporary impairment is hoped to be just that – temporary. The church has established a Kitty Piersall Organ Repair Fund to help replace the aging bellows that now wheeze through each performance. It will cost $7,000 to repair the organ. This is a small price compared to the organ’s actual value, which is estimated at between $250,000 and $300,000 by today’s standards according to Darwin Klug, an organ restorer with Heissler in America.

“The bellows are made out of rubber cloth. Over the years, they dry out and crack. We’re going to give the pipes a good cleaning, reset the temperament which sets the tuning and modify a couple of stops,” Klug said.

Julia Massey Pittman donated the organ to the church in memory of her father, Herbert S. Massey. Five generations of the Massey-Pittman family have worshipped at the church.

“I’ve been playing the organ since it arrived at the church. I stated playing it fulltime in the early 2000s. It’s a wonderful instrument and I’m excited to hear it play to its full potential again,” Piersall said.

Half of the money needed to repair the organ has already been donated. Repairs are scheduled to begin after this year’s Christmas holiday. The church’s current organist will be off for the first three weeks in January, giving Piersall the opportunity to play the restored organ in its full “voice” once again.

Wilhelm completed 124 pipe organs before retiring in 1990.

Originally from Germany, Wilhelm moved to Canada in 1966, where he ultimately crafted the organ for the First Presbyterian Church of Dade City. It is the only known Wilhelm tracker-style pipe organ ever installed in Florida.

“The organ in Dade City is the same type of organ that Bach would have played on,” Klug said. “It’s built in the classic German sense – a very “bright” organ made of solid oak and handcrafter brass tubing. It’s quite a masterpiece,” Klug said.

The church is now accepting donations for the Kitty Piersall Organ Repair Fund. Please write the fund in the memo line of your checks and mail to the church at 37412 Church Ave., Dade City, FL 33525.

Del Valle Honored For Efforts

Over the course of her career serving Pasco County schools, Samantha Del Valle has created and promoted several opportunities to ensure that every student receives the most from their education and help them get a head start in their college schooling. On Nov. 12 her efforts were recognized when she was named District Administrator of the Year.

Superintendent Kurt Browning surprised Del Valle with the news, along with flowers and a cake, in front of her proud co-workers and her husband, Brian.

“Samantha is an incredible young woman that has made student success her mission,” said Browning.

“Due, in large part, to Samantha’s efforts, more students in Pasco are taking higher level academic courses and becoming better prepared for the real world after graduation.”

Del Valle’s career in education began in 2009 at Land O’Lakes High School where she served as a social studies teacher. It was there that she first became familiar with numerous special programs put in place to help students receive early college credit, such as the International Baccalaureate Program.

After being promoted to assistant principal at Pasco High School in 2013, Del Valle decided to bring similar options to the students of east Pasco and initiated the Cambridge Education Program.

“The Cambridge program was initiated by the administrative staff because we saw the need for such higher learning in the east Pasco area,” Del Valle said. “We were so excited to be able to offer college credit to our students.”

Del Valle now serves as the assistant director for the office of Leading and Learning and oversees the department of enriched programs, continuing to promote equity and easy access to higher education for all students.

“We want to ensure that every student has opportunities to learn and receive the best education we can provide,” said Del Valle.

Del Valle was honored, surprised, and excited to have received her award, but didn’t get into the business to be recognized. According to her, knowing that she is making an impact on the lives of Pasco students is the greatest reward she’ll ever receive.

“I knew from a very young age that I wanted to be a teacher. I have always loved school. If I could have I would have stayed in school forever, but since that wasn’t a possibility I knew that being a teacher was the next best thing,” Del Valle said. “Interacting with the students every day and seeing how much of an impact you have on their lives is such an incredible, rewarding feeling.”

Local CPA Firm Merges With Ohio/Florida CPA

Baggett, Reutimann and Associates are proud to announce that they merged with an Ohio/Florida CPA firm in November 2019.

The Ohio/Florida firm is Bodine Perry, a Certified Public Accounting firm with multiple offices in Ohio and Florida.

The existing Florida firms are in Naples and Jacksonville. This gives Bodine Perry the presence in the Tampa Bay area that they have been seeking according to Dan Perry, Bodine Perry’s managing partner.

Bodine Perry has essentially the same value system as Baggett–Reutimann and expects the merger to help both firms, Perry said.

Baggett-Reutimann, CPAs, PA, has operated in Zephyrhills since 1986. Marci Reutimann, managing partner of Baggett-Reutimann, expects this merger to provide many new opportunities for the local firm, and will add expertise and opportunities for the employees.

Both Reutimann and Judson Baggett, partners in the current firm, will remain as partners in Bodine Perry. All employees of Baggett-Reutimann will continue in their current capacity, and no significant changes are expected in the local firm.

Both Baggett and Reutimann said they are proud to join a firm such as Bodine Perry and are excited about the future opportunities for the firm. The firm will continue in its growing auditing and accounting practice and plans to help Bodine Perry in this area as much as possible.

More information about Bodine Perry can be found by visiting bodineperry.com.

The Queen of Clean

have been organizing similar events for more than 30 years.

Prices for the vehicles that sold ranged from less than $1,000 to more than $45,000, Murphy said. A large variety of vehicles were offered from classic and collectible cars to daily drivers and beaters. One of the more unusual offerings, a 1991 Chevrolet fire truck, sold for $4,800.

The event was a combination swap meet, automotive flea market and car corral. People who had their vehicles in the car corral were responsible for selling them.

Some of the vehicles crossing the auction block that didn’t sell included a 1991 Chrysler TC Maserati with potential buyers bidding up to $3,700 for the car. Also, a 1936 Ford Cabriolet with a rumble seat didn’t sell for $53,000 and a 1967 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport didn’t sell for $24,000.

Some of the cars going to new garages included a 1940 Cadillac four-door sedan that sold for $18,000, a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air that sold for $75,000 and a 1965 Ford Mustang that sold for $12,200.

Other cars that were bought included a VW bus for $18,000, a 1997 Camaro Z-28 for $9,500 and a 1938 Hupmobile for $14,500.

Those attending the Auto Event also had the opportunity to search for treasures among the nearly 1,000 vendor spaces set up throughout the sprawling Festival Park property.

Anything from engines and carburetors and baseball caps to car bumpers could be had for a reasonable price. Some vendors sold colorful vintage signs while others offered items that could be used to dress up someone’s car, truck, SUV or even their motorcycle.

Several food and beverage vendors offered up tasty treats, beer and other beverages for guests.

The popular valve cover race was held again this year. Contestants decorated valve covers and raced them

down an angled ramp. The valve cover that traveled the longest distance was dubbed the winner.

A winter version of the Auto Event will be held in February at Festival Park.

1936 Ford Cabriolet with a rumble seat sold for $53,000. The person who sold it had worked on it for five years to rebuild necessary parts of the car.

This 1938 Hupmobile sold for $14,500. Hupmobiles were manufactured from 1909-1939.

Bidders offered up to $3,700 for this 1991 Chrysler TC Maserati but that wasn’t enough for any of them to take it home. The vehicle was produced from 1989-1991 through a cooperative agreement between Chrysler and Maserati.

The City of Zephyrhills quarterly community cleanup Saturday afforded residents the opportunity to discard all of those unwanted items that may have been cluttering garages, sheds and yards.

Instead of taking a trip and paying a fee at the landfill, the city hosted a free drop off point at the city yard on South Avenue. Appliances, furniture, a hot tub and a tanning bed were just a few items that came in pickup trucks and trailers.

According to Public Works Director Shane LeBlanc, the most intriguing drop off of the day came when a man brought a couch to be discarded. While offloading it, a gold watch fell out. When LeBlanc showed the owner, he said his wife has been looking for the watch for years.

He went home to present his wife with a surprise gift.“The gold watch story is a good one,” LeBlanc said. “It

just fell out when we lifted the cushions. I’m sure there were a couple of missing remotes in there too.”

In the oddity file, LeBlanc said a resident cut up a hot tub and brought it in two loads in his minivan.

“It wouldn’t fit through his screen door, so he cut it up,” LeBlanc added. “He was happy and we took it.”

For some, it is an invaluable service.

“This is awesome,” said Zephyrhills resident Sam Tucker, who brought a washer and dryer as well as other unneeded items. “Every now and then you have a project and stuff piles up.”

City Community Redevelopment Agency Director Gail Hamilton said the cleanup has a trickle-down effect through the city.

“We saw a family that cleaned up their mom’s yard,” Hamilton said. “They live in the CRA. We have a house and yard cleaned up. The next thing they want to is

paint the house. One thing leads to another which leads to another. We’re making progress and we’re changing attitudes.”

It is an event LeBlanc and his staff is proud to be a part of.

“I think it’s a great service to the residents,” LeBlanc said. “They would have to take it to the dump. A lot of people don’t own pickup trucks or trailers, so they bring it to us and we pay to dispose of it. They get rid of it out of their yard. It’s been beneficial for everyone.”
