CONTACTING BOARD MEMBERS Unfortunately, members of the Board continue to receive phone calls at home or e-mails about common ground property issues. Once again, The Executive Board of the Villas at Five Ponds, like almost all other H.O.A.’s, has chosen to employ a professional prop-erty management company, Continental Property Management, a well respected organization, our Property Manager is Ms. Amy Wert.Note: Amy serves other communities as their Property Manager as well. Thus we are not her only customers. Again, common property issues should be reported to our prop-erty manager, preferably in writing. Thank you. TREE REPLACEMENTThe Board has been compiling a list of trees that are going to be scheduled for replacement this fall. The replacement timing will be most likely in November when the trees that will be installed will be dormant for the winter.

PROPERTY OWNERSHIPThe Board recently searched public records that show ownership of the properties in our community. It appears that several people have made the decision to transfer their property ownership to:• One or more of their children• Different types of trusts. This is perfectly okay, however the Association concern is when you made that change, did you have a discussion, with your Home

Owner Insurance Company or Agent about the change to insure your home is insured properly? If not please do so! Thank you. SPRINKLER SYSTEMSTo those who have put an underground sprinkler system on and around their property if you have not already done so, please have it shut done for the winter. We have reached the point on the calendar when overnight temperatures will be getting to or close to the freezing point, thus wetness could freeze on your driveway or the sidewalk near your home or the street, possibly creating a fall hazard and thus a liability upon yourselves.

CLIMBER NEEDEDThe Board is a looking for a volunteer who would have the ability to climb up a ladder that is fixed to a wall in the maintenance room that goes to the upstairs of the clubhouse. We need someone who could observe if all our heating systems are operating. Note: A blink-ing light indicates there is an issue with a unit. This is especially impor-tant during the winter, so we do not have any pipes freeze because a heater was not operating.

GUESTSAs a reminder, a guest staying in your home is not permitted to use the equipment in our fitness center. The fitness center can only be used by permanent residents of the Villas at Five Ponds. A perma-nent resident is someone whose driver license or state issued ID has a Villas at Five Ponds address. Failure to comply with this require-ment will lead to fine.

A frightening statistic: More people vote in ‘American Idol’ than in any US election.”

VOTE Tuesday, November 6th!

“A STAR IS BORN” n ronda dorFman

IT HAS TAKEN ME a day to reflect on the film Ron and I saw Saturday afternoon. In “A Star Is Born,” two stars are born in the film. I was so overcome and touched in every way. When the film ended I could not speak. I cannot call it a movie, truly it was a work of art and must be addressed as an amazing film. Bradley Cooper is a hometown boy and a die-hard Eagles fan. I have loved his acting and humility for sometime. Lady Gaga—I do not know much about—but she has an exceptional voice and is highly creative in her professional life. Her costuming and vision always amazes me. I was treated to their dream and a wish was answered in watching that film. Because my husband and I are art-ists we look at film in a very different way. When we were in college, we took an in-depth film course (thanks to Professor David Grossman, ”The History of Film” PCA.) We learned to appreciate and visualize the director’s way of expressing his concept and message. Director Bradley Cooper surpassed all that I could ask for. The beauty of his images left me breathless. The employment of older actors in the film also sent a message to this senior that we are still viable in a world where everyone is young and creative. Thank you, Mr. Cooper. I must go see it again this week. Let me tell you, run don’t walk to see this masterpiece of film. At The Regal Theater, Warrington

SLEEPER FOR THE SIXERS n Jake samson, The Villa’S Voice guesT sPorTs rePorTer

JUST FOR REFERENCE, you are listening to a fan who has followed the 76ers since they went 10-72 just three seasons ago. I watched almost every game from my freshman dorm and pain-fully put myself through these brutal games that they had no shot of winning. However, this grueling process has helped me with figuring

out which players will stick on this team, and which will not. There are the obvious stars on this team like Ben Simmons, Joel Embiid and Dario Saric whom I’ve mentioned in past articles. However, the sleeper impact player I have for the 2018–2019 Philadelphia 76ers is rookie guard, Landry Shamet. Shamet is a 21-year-old rookie guard from Kansas City, Missouri who has many tools to be a successful NBA player from the jump. Shamet spent three seasons at Wichita State University in Kansas, but only played two of those years after a foot injury made him redshirt (the season doesn’t count towards his athletic eligibility) his first season. He played two

more healthy years, missing only one game and finished his college career averaging 12.9 points per game, while shooting 44% from three point range and 81% from the foul line. The 76ers took him above where most scouts projected him to land in the NBA draft, and selected him 26th out of 60 draft picks. The 76ers have desperately been searching for a player who can create their own shot on offense, and Shamet has shown his ability to do that in both college and in the preseason for the 76ers. With injuries to veteran guard Jerryd Bayless, wingman Wilson Chandler and other first round rookie Zhaire Smith, Shamet should have minutes right away off the bench to contribute some scoring that

the second unit will need. He will have to improve his defensive skills, but one thing that will translate to the NBA is a beauti-ful jump shot, and that is something the Landry already has. Despite Shamet’s relative streakiness through his time at Wichita State and in preseason, I truly expect him to carve out a role on this team filled with young stars. There have been a ton of brutal players that I have watched rock the red, white and blue at the Wells Fargo Center during my Philadelphia basketball fandom, but Landry

will not be one of those. With that experience, I really think that he will stick with this organization and will not be “just a rookie” that will wear #23 for the 76ers this season.

Hints • Tips • PointersGlancing Subjects HEALTHCARE DOCUMENTS n ronald J. gordon, esq.

MOST PEOPLE have heard of a Living Will but many people are still unclear as to what happens if you have a document of this nature in place. There is a similar document known as Healthcare Power of Attorney which also addresses health care issues. A Living Will is an “end of life” docu-ment. If you are in a terminal condition, unable to communicate your wishes or are comatose with no hope of recovery, this document will tell your doctors and family members what type of treatment you may wish to receive or decline. The treatment it addresses consists of life sustaining care such as cardiac resuscitation, mechanical respiration, etc. The misconception that people have is that this document essen-tially “green lights” your family or doctors to hasten your demise. Also, if you have a Living Will this does not mean that you will be denied treatment that would otherwise help you. It is only to be used when the

treatment that you may receive would only prolong the process of dying. It will not in any way be used to prematurely terminate a person’s life or deny necessary medical care. The document itself is essentially a check-list where (as mentioned previously) you can choose to accept or decline particular treatment. You may choose to direct your doctors and family to use all conceivable methods to keep you alive even if there is no hope of recovery. The choice is yours. Please understand that, even with a Living Will, doctors are going to discuss treat-ment options or any potential outcomes with family members or those who are designated through either the Living Will or Healthcare Power of Attorney. A Healthcare Power of Attorney dif-fers from a Living Will in that this docu-ment designates a person to make medical decisions for you in the event that you are unable to do so. It is not used in situa-tions where death is imminent. It will give someone the ability to make medical deci-sions for you which may include changing doctors or hospitals, approving or disap-proving of a particular aspect of medical

care, etc. if you are unable to communicate your wishes. It will allow someone to access your records and permit them to speak to the medical providers about your medical condition and care. Depending on your relationship, with your doctor, they may not require a Healthcare Power of Attorney to discuss medical issues with another person. However, due to the HIPAA laws, most medical providers will require some sort of document showing you have this authority. You also do not automatically get to access the medical records or make the decisions for your children if they are no longer minors. For those of us with adult children who may not be married, a Healthcare Power of Attorney is recommended so that these adult children can designate their spokesperson or advocate. Similarly, if you have grandchildren over the age of 18, it is probably a good idea for them to have this type of Power of Attorney as well.

ON SUNDAY, October 7th, we held a festive brunch in the Villas at Five Ponds Ballroom honoring our ”newer“ residents to the community. The hosting was expertly coordinated by Casey Bauer and her talented staff of volunteers. Included in the welcome party were numerous VFP “pioneers,” board members, and neighbors who contributed delicious home-made goodies to the event.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU for the many calls, cards and donations acknowledging the loss of my mom, Frieda Rosen. Your kindness and caring will not be forgotten. ~Leenie Rogovitz

THREE YEARS AGO when Sam and I moved into Five Ponds, we had hoped we would be part of a community with people who were friendly and took care of one another. Our community has shown us all that and more. We want to thank everyone for their support and kindness during this difficult time in our lives. ~Barb & Sam Feldman

Community News • Tips • Health IssuesAlertsFRAUD ALERT: SOCIAL SECURITY SCAMYOUR SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER is an important key for an identity thief. We, the Bucks County Department of Consumer Protection and the Crimes Against Older Adults Task Force want you to be aware of the most recent attempt scammers are making at trying to steal your identity. We have received many reports of calls from “Social Security,” as it shows on the caller ID (thanks to spoofing), to residents inform-ing them that their “social security number has been compromised.”These calls are, oftentimes, threatening in nature. If you should hap-pen to miss their call, they will leave a call back number for you that may actually be a legitimate number of the Social Security Administration. DO NOT FALL FOR THIS. The Social Security Administration will never call you to inquire of you sensitive information. If they need to contact you it will always be in written form via U.S. mail. This holds true for all government agencies. Other people have stated that they have come across spoof websites that are set up to look like the place where you would apply for a new Social Security card—but these websites are also a setup to

steal your personal information. How can you protect yourself? The Federal Trade Commission recommends the following when dealing with a government imposter:• Don’t give the caller your information. Never give out or confirm sensitive information—like your bank account, credit card, or Social Security number—unless you know who you’re dealing with. If someone has contacted you, you can’t be sure who they are.

• Don’t trust a name or number. Con artists use official-sounding names to make you trust them. To make their call seem legitimate, scammers use internet technology to spoof their area code—so although it may seem they are calling from Washington, DC, they could be calling from anywhere in the world.

• Check with the Social Security Administration. The SSA has a warn-ing about these scams and suggests you contact them directly at 1-800-772-1213 to verify the reason for the contact and the person’s identity prior to providing any information to the caller.
