Peace Poster Contest
NOVEMBER 10 is the dead line for all winning entries to reach me.
The 1-J District Cabinet Meeting is on November 16th
and it will be a virtual meeting, so all posters will be
photographed and put on line for the voting.
May I suggest all clubs in the Contest look at the rules
again and confirm with the participants that they are
adhering to them - sizes, materials, paper, etc.
Please remember each child needs to write 1 or 2 lines
describing what they understand as A CELEBRATION OF PEACE on a separate
piece of paper (no letters or writing on posters).
I also need to know how many calendars each club - participant or not - will
take so I can place the calendar order as soon as the posters reach me. Please
email or text me.
Thank you all for your enthusiasm and cooperation.

October 2016 - 3 - 1-J Journal
The Cubs .. Playing In October!?
There is something about to happen on Chicago’s North side that
few thought would ever happen. The Chicago Cubs and October
baseball are not usually synonymous. Until 2016, that is. It must
be really exciting for those Cubs fans that have experienced all of
that heartbreak for 30 years or more.
Something else should be exciting for all Lions in District 1-J:
Candy Day. It’s almost here. Your club’s plans should already be
in place. If you conduct an underwriting campaign, those letters
have already been sent. Are you ready for those in-person follow
-up visits with those local businesses? You should already have
your candy, possibly already distributed to your members.
Hopefully they already know where they will be stationed. Good
luck! Be safe!
Something else happens in October. Remember our Centennial
Motto: “Where there is a need, there is a Lion.” Many clubs will
have already started planning their Thanksgiving and Christmas
Holiday service projects. Throughout our District, Lions will be
giving food baskets to the needy, conducting Shop with a Cop so
needy kids can shop for Christmas presents for family members
and other great activities. Sure, most clubs will have some sort of
Christmas party. My club collects gifts for the DuPage Convales-
cent Center residents and non-perishable food items for our
local food pantry at our party. Have your fun while helping
someone else. Try it.
Whether planning Holiday Service Projects or looking ahead to
springtime fundraisers, I’m sure that many clubs realize that
having a few more members would be helpful.
October has been a traditional Membership Month. Every
month should be a Membership Month. If your club should
successfully induct a few new members during October, you will
have additional hands to help with those Holiday Service
Projects and springtime fundraisers.
I will provide you with some possible sources of new Lions in
next month’s article.

From Our GLT Chair . . .
One of the facets of the job of District Global Coordinator is to
access the health of our clubs and audit our success with District
goals. While we are anticipating adding new clubs to the District,
a very positive trend, the District has not been as successful in
reaching its membership goals. Year to date, we have added 42
new members, but unfortunately, during the same time period
we have lost 84 members. Some losses are to be anticipated, as
people age they become less able to participate in club activities,
members retire and move, financial reasons make membership
impossible, but many losses are preventable. As Lions we need to
realize that retention is as important as bringing in new
members.
Lions Clubs International has resources available to help with
both recruiting new members and retaining current members.
Visit the LCI website, to Members Center, and then to
“resources”, there you will find publications, webinars and other
helpful tools. The “My LCI” page offers short programs on
demand in the Lions Learning Center. Please use these available
tools to strengthen your clubs.
One additional tool that can be of value to your club and to the
District is the Guiding Lions Training Program (see above) There
is no charge for this program.
Lion John Barsanti, District 1-J GLT Chair
Guiding Lion Training Offered
On Saturday, November 5, 2016 a Guiding Lion Training session
will take place at the South Elgin Lions Club, 500 S. Fulton,
South Elgin, Il. The program will begin at 10:00 AM and will end
by 2:00 PM with a break for snacks. We are fortunate to have as
the program presenter the Area (and Multiple District MD-1)
Global Leadership Coordinator, Lion Jama Wahl. Lion Jama has
an extensive background in training and I can promise you an
interesting, informative and exciting program.
Guiding Lions are those who, after completing the training, are
eligible to be assigned to guide new clubs, orient and train new
club officers, motivate and support new club growth and help
rebuild failing, cancelled or weak clubs. This is important work
that requires Lions who are truly dedicated to the ideals of
Lionism and to service. I know that there are many Lions who
are eager to enhance their skills and help our organization
succeed. Please consider signing up for this opportunity to aid
the new Lions of the District or those who need help in revitaliz-
ing their club.
An RSVP is required so that sufficient manuals are available.
Notify your Zone Chair of your intent to attend or contact
District Global Leadership Coordinator Lion John Barsanti at
630-980 7381 or [email protected] with your reservation
or if you have questions regarding this program or any other
matter I can help you with.
VISION SCREENING MACHINE

son of Plusoptic, Inc. will present a training program on the use
of the vision screening devices owned by the regions. Ms. John-
son will explain all of the machine settings and the proper use of
the machine. Training will take place at the MD-1 Forum held at

on training with the device and a chance to have any questions
answered.

New Friends and Neighbors Group Contributed by SCH Lions Club Secy. Lion Carol Santee
Sun City-Huntley Lions Club invited two members of the New
Friends and Neighbors, Kathy Hoster and Nancy Miles, to share
facts and functions about their non-profit group of 27 women
from Carpentersville, Dundee and Algonquin.
The group raises money for
charities through garage sales,
Bunco, and other events, then
donates 100% of the profits to area
projects.
SCH Lions learned that the club
could help promote their events
through the club’s publicity
sources as well as attend and bring friends to these events.
The New Friends and Neighbors recently raised $700 for the
SCH Lions’ Veterans Program and also donated items left after
garage sales for the living areas to homeless veterans through
some VA agencies. A recent Bunco produced an additional $300
in profit which they also donated to SCH’s Veterans’ Program.
The financial and product donations were split between Jesse
Brown VA Center and Transient Living Servies that supports the
homeless veterans in the attempts to obtain and manage their
living areas. The Lions then assist in providing the necessary
items that make that living area a home, from simple household
items, such as dishes, silverware, pots & pans, microwaves, crock
pots, bedding and curtains to needed cleaning supplies, and even
personal toiletries. Lightly-used clothes and shoes for work inter-
views are also needed.
RV & Trailer Parking Available
During 2017 LCI Convention
The RV & Trailer parking area is a large asphalt parking lot locat-
ed south of Chicago McCormick Place. The lot is the Truck
Marshal Lot “B” and it has security, a vending area and
restrooms available 24 hours.
However, there are NO HOOK-UPs or DUMPING STATION
available. The nearest dump station is approximately 30 miles
away.
Your unit can be parked with daily in-and-out privileges for $35/
per day. There are a limited number of parking spots available
and requests are based on first come, first served. Reserve your
space at McCormick Place — Lot B by going to
www.truticket.com/busparking.
Additional RV & Trailer Campgrounds information can be found
on the MD1 Host Committee website at:
www.lions2017chicago.org
Campgrounds are to be directly contacted to make reservations
with that park. There will be NO Convention Shuttle Service pro-
vided for Lions who are staying at these campgrounds.

DG Lion Maria has asked that we not only concentrate on the
Environmental Photo Contest, but environmental projects as
well, many of which you may already be doing. Think, what can
we do as individual/members of the Lions Club in your commu-
nity, do to improve our environment? Global warming is a fact —
let’s see what we can do to help the world, our little corner by
corner.
I have not found any deadlines on the environmental project side
but the deadline to submit photos to the district is November 1,
2016 — get busy. The rules say photos should be printed for sub-
mission but last year worked well by emailing .jpg file format

match the money raised that night.
Naperville Noon Lions Club approved a donation of $8,000 as a matching grant for DONKA for “Giving Tuesday.” Last year, the
Lions Club supported them with a $5,000 match and they successfully raised, with the Lions Club’s match, over $10,000.
Roselle Lion Maryann Grygiel was honored by the Roselle Village Board recently for her exemplary service to the community. She

Candy Day is just a few days away. On October 14th Lions across
the state of Illinois will solicit donations. This is the major fund-
raiser of your Foundation and the monies raised go toward all of
the projects and assists many thousands of people in need. Does
your club have a Candy Day Chairperson? If not appoint one
immediately.
What streets in your community can you put volunteers?
Candy Day works wherever there are people. So where else can
you put volunteers –
Train Stations
Stores like Walgreens, Jewel, other food stores,
Wal Mart, and many more.
Banks are another great location
It is not too late to contact your local businesses and ask for
volunteers from among their staff to assist in the
solicitation. Also, many of these local businesses will
contribute to Candy Day through a company donation to cover
the cost of underwriting.
We need every Lion in 1-J to come to the front and help. District
1-J has always been the leader in the collection of monies from
Candy Day. Let’s show the rest of Illinois Lions what we can do.
Lions is the most recognized symbol in the world. So if you can
give an hour, or all day, get out and raise the money.
If you need more information or assistance you can call Trustee
Jim Addington 630-215-9527 or Trustee Nancy Rex 815-786-
2332 or call the Foundation office 815-756-5633 and talk to
Diane. We are as close as the phone and will assist in every way
possible.
A couple of weeks ago the Lions of Illinois Eye Research
Institute held a 30th Anniversary Open House. It does not seem
possible that it has been 30 years since the Lions of 1-J, along
with the Lions across this State, raised the monies necessary to
build one of the premier research facilities in the world. I would
invite all Lions to find some time to visit the facility on Taylor St.
in Chicago in the U of I Chicago complex. They would love to
have all Lions stop by and visit. This is a place of miracles and it
is there because of you.
There is a lot to discuss about your Foundation. Both Lions
Nancy Rex and Jim Addington would love to visit your club and
talk about your Foundation.
Have a great Candy Day!!,
