Page 2 Vision 20/20 V4, Issue iii, Winter 2015

Greetings! At the time of this writing in November, we have just come through a dramatic weather shift. Is it just me or do others feel that we have already been through winter and should be looking forward to spring? The last few weeks in November have been strange at best but isn’t it great that we can count on wacky four seasons weather patterns!

However, what is reassuring and a constant is that each fall, a new District 20 leadership team emerges from the AGM where we can publicly thank those who have voluntarily served with the Board. We also have the opportunity to introduce members who step forward to offer their time and expertise to make retired life all it can be, not only for their colleagues but also for the community at large. Many of these opportunities have been captured within this newsletter and I encourage you to read them.

To our departing executive members from last year, I wish to thank each of them on your behalf. Not only have they represented your views and concerns, with energy, enthusiasm and professionalism, they have also taken on significant leadership roles. A special thank you is extended to: Past President Harry Murphy for leading the District RTO-ERO in his capacity as both President and Past President, Chris Jones who served as our scribe/secretary, and Cathy Henderson who served as one of our four councillors.

Three new members have stepped forward to round out this year’s executive: Shirley Baird has assumed the demanding duties of Secretary; Dennis Quinn has agreed to serve as 2nd Vice-President; and Les Forkes has taken on a councillor position. Thank you to Shirley, Dennis and Les. Their contact information can be found throughout this newsletter.

As you read this edition of Vision 20/20, there are some key issues that need to be highlighted. First and foremost, the executive is a thrifty group and looks at different ways to mitigate rising costs. One key area is the production of our newsletter by editor Pat Bland. As is noted in the newsletter each print copy we send to members costs about $2.00. As members chose to receive their copy only electronically (through email), a couple of things happen. First, our District 20 saves money that can be used to support a wider variety of programs and services. Secondly, the in-home storage issue is resolved as there is a lot less household space used storing an electronic copy on our hard drives than having to buy yet another bookcase!!

We have identified our newest recipients of the 2015 Service To Others awards. By the time you read this, they will have been contacted and their cheques presented. You can look forward to a report from Awards Chair Dennis Quinn in the next edition of Vision20/20 in April 2015.

I look forward to an excellent District 20 RTO-ERO year and look forward to connecting with you, the members, at the variety of opportunities afforded us.

Dorothy Pearson, the Bags Plus Co-ordinator from the Kingston Branch of RWTO/OERO, graciously announced the pleasure her team experienced upon receiving a $500 grant from the RTO/ERO District 20 Service to Others award program. She reported that the funds assisted in providing individual bags and boxes of toiletries, seasonal clothing (mitts, hats and scarfs) and small gifts to the following agencies: Better Beginnings, the Barrie Street Shelter, 2 families in need at Chalmers Church, adults and children at Lily's Place, Dawn House, Ryandale and the Rural Vision Centre, Sydenham for families on their Food Coupons programme. The Kingston members donate fabric to make the bags, helping to save money on this area of the project. The branch also has a team of seamstresses that sew the bags. RETIREMENT and PENSION CONCERNS First Vice-President Report

David Kendall

The RTO-ERO website provides a wide variety of Fact Sheets with extensive, current information for members. They are easily accessible through the Members Centre of the Provincial RTO-ERO website at www.rto-ero.org/fact-sheets. Fact Sheet Headings include: Financial Issues, Government Benefits, Health Issues, Insurance Issues, Legal Issues, Marital Issues, Surviving Spouse Issues, Retirement Issues.

The investment program of the Ontario Teachers' Pension Plan (OTPP) has proven over time to be very positive for its 307,000 active and retired members. Since the plan's inception in 1990, total investment income generated has accounted for 77% of the funding of the pensions of our members with the other 23% coming from member and government contributions.

One of the important aspects of our pension plan is that it includes an annual cost of living increase. This increase helps pensioners to sustain buying power and to maintain financial stability throughout our retirement years. The rate adjustment for 2015 is 1.7% and will take effect in January 2015.

Last year’s OTPP fund ended with $140.8 billion in assets. The rate of return for the fund was 10.9% in 2013. The plan entered into 2014 with an estimated surplus of $5.1 billion which was a first experience in the past decade. The Ontario Teachers' Federation and the Government of Ontario decided to utilize this surplus to address the shortfall experienced by members who retired after 2009. Those members who earned pension credit after 2009 will receive a one-time boost in addition to the cost of living increase in January 2015. This boost will be up to $50 depending on the member's personal circumstances. Members can access additional information on this topic and others by logging on to the OTPP website at www.otpp.com. The website features a video that describes how the pension board determines the rate of inflation. The changes for pension credits earned after 2009 are also found on the OTPP website by accessing “members/pension-news-online”. These videos are informative and easy to follow.
