The players really enjoyed the course and were able to take home some great prizes. The tournament was a two person scramble format and students Michael Jewell and Mike Gilberg (pictured right) teamed up and shot a one under par 71 to take home the victory. When we asked Mike Gilberg what he thought about the tournament, he said, “This was my first year playing and I enjoyed the entire experience, but finding out we won was pretty cool!” Coming down the stretch, neither player was thinking about victory. “We really didn’t think we had a chance to win it when we lipped out our four foot par putt on the last hole. I thought we were fighting for third place,” said teammate Michael Jewell. They fought hard until the end, and with the win they will be representing USD at one of the biggest scramble tournaments in the country, the Collegiate Golf Alliance National Championships in Las Vegas on November 12th and 13th. INTRAMURALS

Intramurals started off this semester with a bang! In dodgeball, “Nunchuck Wild” has continued their dominance from last year with a 29-1 record. They are looking to repeat as champions, but will first have to defeat the “USD” who is right behind them in the standings. These two teams faced off last Tuesday (10/11) in an epic battle that did not disappoint! It was a really close match, with each team winning four games. Then “Nunchuck Wild” won the last two matches to pull out the victory.

WILL “NUNCHUCK WILD” CONTINUE TO DOMINATE?

The 3x3 basketball league also had a huge first two weeks. With defending champion “Naughty Time,” now called “Old Caf Connection,” facing a new foe “Prestige Worldwide.” Each team won one of the first two games to force a third. The third game was a battle (each team fighting for position and points), but in the end “Old Caf Connection” pulled through with a close victory to win the best of three series 2-1. This season promises to be a tough one with “Prestige Worldwide” as the new team to beat.

Over the next two weeks Flag Football and Men’s/Women’s Soccer leagues will be kicking off, each with

teams returning for a chance to win the coveted USD Intramural Champions t-Shirt. There is also going to be a design contest for the Intramural Champions t-shirt (see page 3 for details). The winner will receive a free shirt with their design on it and other prizes!!! Please send any entries to [email protected] by 10/20.

SPORT CLUB HAPPENINGS

USD Club Baseball enters its 4th year of existence and competition in the Southern Pacific Conference of the National Club Baseball Association. There are over 100 teams in the NCBA and this year brings hopes of a regional appearance as well as the NCBA World Series. Baseball has had a tough time finding a home field for the Fall semester, so in the midst of getting declined from various high schools, the team "had" to "downgrade" to USD’s Cunningham Stadium. Come see our new Toreros

in action on Sunday, October 16th against Cal Poly SLO at 10 a.m. In their own words: “We are a group of guys who are still playing baseball for the love of the game. Our club is entirely run by and paid for by students. Therefore, we greatly appreciate all the support we can get, be it monetary and/or by coming out to the games.”

Coached by former all-American and ten-time Masters Nationals Champ Gary Becker, the Men’s Water Polo club team celebrated its first win of the season against cross town rival SDSU (who said Aztecs know how to swim?). Unfortunately, this talented group will not be competing in any home events this month. However, if you’re up in the San Luis Obispo area on the weekend of October 22-23, head over the Cal Poly SLO to watch our boys compete in the Conference Championship. SPORT CLUB HAPPENINGS

Last year, the USD Surf Club was the most successful team the school has seen in over a decade placing 10th in the State and 10th at NSSA Nationals. This year brings a more committed team which will help boost points

and ratings. If you’ve never been to a surf competition, now is the time. Join the team for their first contest at Blacks Beach in La Jolla on Saturday and Sunday, October 22-23.

Come be a part of the action as they host Cal Poly SLO on Saturday, October 22nd and UCSB on Sunday, October 23rd at the Valley Field.

SPORT CLUB HAPPENINGS

Our Women’s Club Soccer team kicked off the fall by winning their first game of the season against UCI by 3-1! These young women are devoted to playing competitive club soccer and appreciate how it brings an opportunity for not only skill development and self-growth but also play a sport they love with a great group of new friends.

In their own words: "Last year we went undefeated in our league and won the San Diego Cup. This new season brings promises of an even more stellar record and more tournament placements. We're off to a great start so far, which is a reflection of our team's dedication and enthusiasm. Our first home games will be on Saturday and Sunday, October 22-23, against CSULB and SDSU. Come out and support!"

CLUB MEN’S RUGBY

CLUB WOMEN’S SOCCER

The Men’s Club Rugby team beat their alumni for the first time in three years over Homecoming weekend 25-5! This group ranks high in the entertainment category and if you can appreciate the brute strength, endurance and drive of these incredible athletes, take a road trip to St. Mary’s in Moraga, CA on Saturday and Sunday, October 29-30.

In their own words: “We have an exceptional defense! Plus we are relentless in the fine art of tackling. State betta look out!”

SPORT CLUB HAPPENINGS

It’s “fall ball” for our Men’s and Women’s Club Lacrosse teams, which allows for fine tuning of systems and organizing new and returning players. Despite the fact the actual season does not begin until the Spring semester, the current teams invited their prestigious alumni back to scrimmage over Homecoming weekend. Both games were entertaining to say the least, with very a fun and hilarious banter between the

players. The best part was the incredible support of the alumni. This is a very special group with a family-like atmosphere. Come and check out our men’s scrimmages on Manchester Field against Cal State Fullerton, Sunday, October 16th and Claremont McKenna on Saturday, October 22nd. Our women will compete on Saturday, October 29th also on Manchester Field.

SPOTLIGHT AWARDS

FITNESS EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH

RECREATION EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTHFor the month of September, Campus Recreation would like to acknowledge Carley Nagel. Carley is a freshman who has just began her journey with Campus Recreation and has already proven to be a valuable asset in the department. “Carley is a rockstar! Not only is she incredibly organized, but her insight and ability to problem solve is outstanding. I do not know how I would have survived the last couple weeks without her help. She's so reliable and genuinely excited to be a part of this department. We are very lucky to have her as a student employee,” said Heather Evans, Carley’s supervisor. Carley is from Rancho Cucamonga, California and is a biology major with a psychology minor. “The best thing about working for Campus Rec is all the wonderful people I am meeting and always being surrounded by sports,” said Carley. You may see Carley working intramural or sport clubs events so if you see her, congratulate her on her award!

Above: Recreation Student Employee of the Month, Carley Nagel.

The Mission Fitness Center’s Employee of the month is Quincy Barnes! Quincy is self-motivated, proactive, efficient and willing to do what is best for her team. Whenever she is asked to consider a new responsibility, she rises to the occasion. Recently she was asked to help market our Rec Gear sale. While admitting that creativity isn’t her greatest strength, she explored this marketing piece and submitted a smart option for our next sale. We greatly appreciate Quincy’s openness to try new tasks, even when they’re outside of her comfort zone, with a positive can-do attitude. She is a very conscientious staff member who strives to make the MFC better. She’s already distinguished herself and we look forward to seeing how she continues to grow with us and at USD.Above: Fitness Student Employee

of the Month, Quincy Barnes.
