BARTERIn today’s economy we need to stop and think….if we

choose to only spend our money on the ABSOLUTE Necessi-ties, than the economy will continue to suffer. However if welook wisely, we can still go out to dinner, see a movie or evengo on that vacation. When we stop spending, the smaller businesses we used to

spend with frequently suffer, then they have to stop spendingand so it goes…. But, if we just choose to spend more wiselythan not at all, the economy will recover….Those of us involved in Barter have a great advantage above

the other guys. We have a portion of our income that is avail-able for use without coming out of our pocket. Consider thebusinessman without barter, he goes out to dinner and his wal-let suffers the entire amount, we can use our trade dollars, and only pay the tax, and tip out of pocket. Hair salons areloosing business because the regular businessman can nolonger afford this expense. Already big companies like Star-bucks and Albertson’s are cutting back on the number ofstores they have open. What happens to the small businesseswhen this slowing of the economy affects them… their familysuffers, and the people they do business with suffer and it willonly get worse. Think, and make the changes that need to bemade, but make them small changes.

Adjusting to the Economy…By Susan Hummell

There's a smell in the air this time of year and it's a goodone. It's kind of a combination of pumpkins and spice, pigskins, good food, pine trees and new business. Ahhhhyes, the wonderful fragrance of fresh new business. There'sreally nothing like it or anything that can replace it. It's thelifeblood of every company big or small. It happens everyyear at this time. It kind of coincides with football seasonand Thanksgiving. For some of us it makes our whole yearand makes it possible to rejuvenate us for another fewmonths. But some of us seem to be better at it than othersand I've got a few thoughts on that from talking to some ofthe top businesses in Central Florida.

Here you go (take notes).

1) First always be prepared for a landslide of business. Ifyou know more business is on the horizon don't wait to fillup your shelves. I was in a pizza place at an Art Festivalone time that ran out of cheese. No one stayed for the sauceonly variety.

2) Have plenty of printed material and order forms on handto keep the information flowing. *Remember to put yourweb address and extended business hours on all printedmaterial. Sometimes even if your operation is closed a clientcan pull up your website or make arrangements to be therethe next day at 9:00am or whenever you open.

3) Never turn down business because you're too busy tohandle it. Never ever do this. In the middle of January you'ddo anything to have this person in front of you. He knowsyou're busy and will appreciate you're thoughtfulness byhelping him out. And the next time he needs your widgetshe'll have your card.

4) Advertise everywhere you can. I know you're saying"Great, spend more money than I'm taking in". Wrong, there are tons of places that will allow you to place busi-ness cards and/or brochures at there info center. You canalso have someone go and distribute your sales info to

malls, churches, farmers markets, art festivals or anywherethat large groups of people congregate. Advertise on tradein community papers, magazines, direct mail or even onthe radio. Get your name out there so that when you ap-proach a new client they've at least heard of your companybefore.

This is the season to advertise! It's now or never. He whohesitates is lost. Timing is everything. This is when advertis-ing really pays off. I hope you're getting the message herecause I'm all clichéd out. Stand Up and Shout!

In the past few weeks I have talked to more and more mem-bers that are hurting due to the economy. For some mem-bers it feels like the economy has taken a sharp jaggededged sword and not only stabbed the heart of their busi-ness but has begun to twist. Many businesses will not makeit through this tragic time that is making its own history. Thegood thing for you as a member of The Barter Network isthat you are able to get things that you still need day to dayfor your business operations and not have to spend a dimeout of your pocket. This is why The Barter Network exists…

We have many things for your business, personal life, andgifts for those around you that are all available on trade. The holiday tradeshow is right around the corner. Forget allyour cash flow problems and come out to our tradeshowspecifically dedicated to get all your holiday presents avail-able on trade. Anything from Children’s Toys, Fine Jewelry,Furniture, Electronics, Art, Pottery, Gift Baskets, Cosmetics,Water Purifiers, Footwear, Cell Phone Accessories, Books,Candles, Teeth Whitening, Facials, Essential Oils, Wines,Liquors, as well as Gift Certificates for Massages, Facials,Hair Salons, Teeth Whitening, Carpet Cleaning, ComedyClubs, Theatres, Laser Hair Removal, Restaurants, Graniteand Marble Countertops, etc…

Many businesses this year have had to cut back on em-ployees, salaries, and bonuses… This is why we offer subaccounts, and The Barter Network gift cards that can bespent just like a regular member with no fees. This year foryour staff why not give them all a $250.00 bonus in trade.Your employees can then use it to go out to dinner, see thedoctor, get eyeglasses, buy furniture, get a massage andfacial, etc. Some members of The Barter Network havetaken this technique to a higher level; they issue their em-ployees a monthly and / or weekly bonus in trade. Wesetup our system to automatically deposit the bonus in totheir sub account. This excites their employees and givesthem a sense of stability during these rough economic times.

Imagine the Economy without BARTER

Page 11: VOLUME II, ISSUE WINTER 2008

“Leadership is influence” stated John Maxwell. Through avariety of techniques a leader impacts the lives of others. The rewarding feeling of making a difference sparks theleader to continue this role.

Individuals are recognized as leaders due to their actions.By leading through example, one gains the respect of oth-ers who in return follow the lead. Through motivation andbelieving in others a leader becomes successful. Humilityenables a leader to stay on top.

In order to be a good leader, more is needed than the abil-ity to delegate. Leading through example is, indeed, themost important aspect of leadership. When others noticethat the leader is actively involved they are more likely tobecome involved also. In a voluntary organization like theShriners, leading by example not only promotes goodteamwork, but also creates enthusiasm and excitement aspeople want to join in the fun.

All leaders that rise and stay on the top are respected andhumble. A leader is not better than anybody else. Thereare times when no one wants to do something that mustbe done. It is at those times that a leader must take on thedirty work or perhaps do a little task that no one will evenrecognize. Ralph Waldo Emerson said, “A great man isalways willing to be little.’

Leaders, by believing in themselves and everyone that sur-rounds them have the ability to achieve higher dreams. When believing starts from within one person it begins tospread and grow into others. A leader is able to makeothers believe through inspiration. A leader makes peoplerealize their full potential and push it further. In speakingof the leadership of Vince Lombardi, Jerry Kramer re-marked, “He made us all better than we thought we couldbe.” This is the true sign of a great leader. Leaders areable to bring out another side of an individual. Leadersare always optimistic and never, never lose hope.

Great leaders have an uncanny belief and vision to dotheir best, whatever it takes, to make the project successful.Leaders never stop believing in themselves or their follow-ers. Belief is knowledge that we can do something. It’s theinner feeling that what we undertake, we can accomplish. For the most part, all of us have the ability to look at some-thing and to know whether or not we can do it. So in be-lief, there is power; our eyes are opened; our opportunitiesbecome plain; our visions become realities. Believing is akey to achieving and it is contagious.

Motivation creates a leader. A leader is able to motivateothers because of their own commitment, desire, character, love, sacrifice, and integrity. Through these attributes oth-ers are inspired. Motivation makes an individual want todo their best.

Leadership qualities can become a bigger part of every-one’s life through continued education, growth, and thesetting of goals. Growth is the process of responding tochange for the better. Setting goals will give you the clearobjectives to be a motivator and a true leader. True lead-ers are not born, they are developed by individuals thatposses the wants, and desires to dedicate themselves tobecoming one. The decision is up to you, what kind ofleader do you want to become?
