“To His Sacred Heart”

Video Series for Advent

Are you ready for Advent? Do you have what you need to grow in faith and love of God more deeply during this

Holy Season of the year? Our parish would like to give you a gift of a video series called “Growing in Holiness.”

The Advent video series was born from the inspiration of a parish rosary group that meets weekly to support

one another in growing in faith. Their desire was to make a video series for Advent to encourage and support

others, including the parishioners of the Sacred Heart community.

Each Friday beginning on November 20th, we will share a video link at www.sacredheartbr.org to a topic on

“Growing in Holiness.” These videos are short inspirations to encourage your growth to a holy life for the

following week. Each video will include (1) supportive spiritual information about a weekly topic, (2) interviews with

Sacred Heart parishioners and (3) a prayer for reflection for the following week to guide you in your quest for holiness

during Advent.

Below is our schedule:

Week of Christ the King – “Growing in Holiness” – to be released on November 20.

First Week in Advent – “Growing in Holiness Through Prayer” – to be released on November 27.

Second Week in Advent – “Growing in Holiness Through Mary” – to be released on December 4.

Third Week in Advent – “Growing in Holiness Through Reconciliation” – to be released on December 11.

Fourth Week in Advent – “Growing in Holiness Through the Eucharist” –to be released on December 18.

We would like to make sure that all of our parishioners receive this gift. There will be two ways to view the

videos.

First, a weekly email can come to your inbox with Father Walsh’s sermon and a link to the weekly video. We

would like to make sure that we have the correct email address for everyone in our parish who wishes to receive these,

so please go to the parish website at sacredheartbr.org and go to the link Join our Email List to make sure your email

is correct or to add your email if you have not already signed up. If you are unable to do this you may also contact

Tiffany Dykes in the parish office at [email protected] and she will assist you with getting your email in the

system.

Second, the videos will be posted on Sacred Heart Church’s website at www.sacredheartbr.org each week for

viewing and will remain on the parish website in “Links & Resources” under the “Get Involved” tab for

future viewing as well. We encourage you to share this series with others, through email, social media, or text links.

The Spiritual Life Commission and the Come to the Water Rosary group wish you a very blessed Advent

season during a year that has been challenging to so many in our community.

Entrance Antiphon: Jer 29:11, 12, 14

The Lord said: I think thoughts of peace and not of affliction.

You will call upon me, and I will answer you,

And I will lead back your captives from every place.

First Reading: Prv 31:10-13, 19-20, 30-31

A reading from the Book of Proverbs

When one finds a worthy wife,

her value is far beyond pearls.

Her husband, entrusting his heart to her,

has an unfailing prize.

She brings him good, and not evil,

all the days of her life.

She obtains wool and flax

and works with loving hands.

She puts her hands to the distaff,

and her fingers ply the spindle.

She reaches out her hands to the poor,

and extends her arms to the needy.

Charm is deceptive and beauty fleeting;

the woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.

Give her a reward for her labors,

and let her works praise her at the city gates.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 128: 1-2, 3, 4-5

R. Blessed are those who fear the Lord.

Blessed are you who fear the LORD,

who walk in his ways!

For you shall eat the fruit of your handiwork;

blessed shall you be, and favored. R.

Your wife shall be like a fruitful vine

in the recesses of your home;

Your children like olive plants

around your table. R.

Behold, thus is the man blessed

who fears the LORD.

The LORD bless you from Zion:

may you see the prosperity of Jerusalem

all the days of your life. R.

Second Reading: 1 Thes 5:1-6

A reading from the first Letter of Saint Paul to the

Thessalonians

Concerning times and seasons, brothers and sisters,

you have no need for anything to be written to you.

For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord

will come

like a thief at night.

When people are saying, “Peace and security,”

then sudden disaster comes upon them,

like labor pains upon a pregnant woman,

and they will not escape.

But you, brothers and sisters, are not in darkness,

for that day to overtake you like a thief.

For all of you are children of the light

and children of the day.

We are not of the night or of darkness.

Therefore, let us not sleep as the rest do,

but let us stay alert and sober.

The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation: Jn 15:4a, 5b

R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Remain in me as I remain in you, says the Lord.

Whoever remains in me bears much fruit.. R.

Gospel: Mt 25:14-15, 19-21

The Lord be with you. R. And with your spirit

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

R. Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus told his disciples this parable:

“A man going on a journey

called in his servants and entrusted his possessions to them.

To one he gave five talents; to another, two; to a third, one—

to each according to his ability.

Then he went away.

After a long time

the master of those servants came back

and settled accounts with them.

The one who had received five talents came forward

bringing the additional five.

He said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents.

See, I have made five more.’

His master said to him, ‘Well done, my good and faithful

servant.

Since you were faithful in small matters,

I will give you great responsibilities.

Come, share your master’s joy.’”

The Gospel of the Lord.

R. Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Sunday: 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

Monday: St. Margaret of Scotland; St. Gertrude, Virgin: St.

Margaret of Scotland was an English princess of the House of

Wessex. She and her family fled to Scotland following the

Norman conquest of England in 1066. By the end of 1070,

Margaret had married King Malcolm III of Scotland, becoming

Queen of Scots. She was a very pious woman, and among many

charitable works she established a ferry across the Firth of Forth

in Scotland for pilgrims travelling to St Andrews in Fife. Margaret

was the mother of three kings of Scotland, and of a queen

consort of England. She died at Edinburgh Castle in 1093. In

1250 Pope Innocent IV canonized her, and her remains were

reinterred in a shrine in Dunfermline Abbey in Fife, Scotland.

Her relics were dispersed after the Scottish Reformation and

subsequently lost.

St. Gertrude, Virgin was born at Eisleben in Saxony. At the age

of five, she was placed in the care of the Benedictine nuns and

later became a nun in the same monastery of which she was

elected abbess. St. Gertrude enjoyed a good education. She loved

the study of philosophy and wrote and composed in Latin, and

was well versed in Sacred Scripture and literature. Her life,

though not replete with stirring events and striking actions, was

one of great mental activity. It was the mystic life of the cloister, a

life hidden with Christ in God. She was characterized by great

devotion to Our Lord in His Passion and in the Blessed

Eucharist, and by a tender love for the Blessed Virgin. She died in

1302. St Gertrude is the patron saint of nuns and of the West

Indies.

Tuesday: St. Elizabeth of Hungary, Religious: St. Elizabeth

of Hungary was born in that country on July 7, 1207 to the

Hungarian King Andrew II . While Elizabeth was a toddler, her

father arranged for her to be married to Ludwig IV of Thuringia.

Because of this, Elizabeth was sent away at the age of four for

education at the court of the Landgrave of Thuringia. In 1221

she married Ludwig, whom she deeply loved. Together the

couple had three beautiful children. Elizabeth lived a life full of

prayer and a service to the poor. She lived an austerely simple

life, practiced penance, and devoted herself to works of charity.

In 1223, Franciscan friars arrived in Thuringia and taught 16-year

-old Elizabeth all about Francis of Assisi's ideals. She thenceforth

decided to live her life mirroring his. Tragedy struck when

Ludwig passed away from illness in 1227. Elizabeth vowed to

never remarry and to live a life similar to a nun, despite pressure

from relatives. In 1228, Elizabeth joined the Third Order of St.

Francis. She founded a hospital in honor of St. Francis, where

she personally attended to the ill. She ministered to the sick and

provided support to the poor. Elizabeth passed away at the age of

24.

Wednesday: The Dedication of the Basilicas of Sts. Peter

and Paul, Apostles; St. Rose Philippine Duchesne, Virgin:

Around 330 Constantine built a basilica over the tomb of St.

Peter. In the 14

th

century construction began on the site of the

original church for the present basilica of St. Peter which was

consecrated on November 18, 1626 by Pope Urban VIII. The

construction of St. Paul’s on the Via Ostiense was begun by

Valentinian II in 386, taking the place of a earlier church built by

Constantine. Destroyed by fire in 1823, a new basilica was

consecrated on December 10, 1854 by Pope Pius IX who joined

in one solemn celebration the dedication of these two great

churches.

St. Rose Philippine Duchesne was born in Grenoble, France.

She is the founder of the first house in the United states of the

Religious of the Sacred Heart. As a religious of the Sacred Heart

she opened the first free school west of the Mississippi. She was

known for her great courage in the face of adversity and danger.

St. Rose was also known for her great loved and desire to serve

the Native American peoples, especially the Potawatomi who

called her the woman who prays always.”

Thursday: Weekday

Friday: Weekday

Saturday: The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

This Marian feast finds its origin in a 2

nd

century apocryphal

source, the Protoevangelium (or Book of James). It commemorates the

tradition of some Jewish parents who offered their children to

God in infancy, by the hands of the priests in the temple, to be

lodged in apartments belonging to the temple, and brought up in

attending the priests and Levites in the sacred ministry. Ancient

tradition tells us that the Blessed Virgin Mary was thus solemnly

offered to God in the temple in her infancy. This feast celebrates

that dedication.
